Digestibility of fiber components namely neutral detergent fiber (total content of cellwall) cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin are estimated in 14 healthy vegetarian men during adlibitum feeding and at 3 energy levels namely 2526, 2868 and 3290 kcals/day. Values of digestibility for adlibitum experiments were 34.17±2.3 for neutral detergent fiber (NDF), 30.1±3.9 for cellulose and 53.4±3.0 for hemicellulose and 8.1±2.6 for lignin. There was a considerable variability in digestibility of fiber components between individuals.  相似文献

Meats need to be heated to inactivate foodborne pathogens such as Escherichia coli O157:H7. High-temperature treatment used to prepare well-done meats increases the formation of carcinogenic heterocyclic amines (HCAs). We evaluated the ability of plant extracts, spices, and essential oils to simultaneously inactivate E. coli O157:H7 and suppress HCA formation in heated hamburger patties. Ground beef with added antimicrobials was inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 (10(7) CFU/g). Patties were cooked to reach 45 °C at the geometric center, flipped, and cooked for 5 min. Samples were then taken for microbiological and mass spectrometry analysis of HCAs. Some compounds were inhibitory only against E. coli or HCA formation, while some others inhibited both. Addition of 5% olive or apple skin extracts reduced E. coli O157:H7 populations to below the detection limit and by 1.6 log CFU/g, respectively. Similarly, 1% lemongrass oil reduced E. coli O157:H7 to below detection limits, while clove bud oil reduced the pathogen by 1.6 log CFU/g. The major heterocyclic amines 2-amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoxaline (MeIQx) and 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) were concurrently reduced with the addition of olive extract by 79.5% and 84.3% and with apple extract by 76.1% and 82.1%, respectively. Similar results were observed with clove bud oil: MeIQx and PhIP were reduced by 35% and 52.1%, respectively. Addition of onion powder decreased formation of PhIP by 94.3%. These results suggest that edible natural plant compounds have the potential to prevent foodborne infections as well as carcinogenesis in humans consuming heat-processed meat products.  相似文献

Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) is a devastating condition impacting marine shrimp production worldwide. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of four probiotic formulations on Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) infected with pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus causing AHPND. In addition, bacterial community composition analyses of shrimp gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and aquaculture water before and after infection were conducted by sequencing variable region 4 of the 16S rRNA gene on the Illumina MiSeq platform. Treatments included: (1) Lactobacillus casei (P1), (2) L. casei and Rhodopseudomonas palustris (P2), (3) L. casei, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and R. palustris (P3), and (4) a commercial probiotic EM® (EM), which showed shrimp survival of 11.7%, 26.7%, 36.7% and 73.3% respectively. Treatments causing lower survival showed greater relative abundance (>60%) of family Vibrionaceae in the GIT compared to treatments with higher survival. Diversity indices from GIT samples revealed that treatments showing higher survival had higher Shannon index values (4.69 ± 0.133), compared with those of treatments with lower survival (0.17 ± 0.004). Diversity indices from water samples did not show significant differences after infection (Shannon index 4.64 ± 0.53). The results showed that probiotics could effectively mitigate AHPND while maintaining diverse microbial composition in shrimp GIT, thus maintaining sustainability in the shrimp aquaculture industry.  相似文献

Exposure to mercuric chloride (HgCl2; 5 mg kg?1 body weight; i.p.) induced oxidative stress in mice and substantially increased lipid peroxidation (LPO) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) levels, decreased the level of reduced glutathione (GSH) and various antioxidant enzymes in liver and also increased the activities of liver marker enzymes in serum. Therapy with propolis extract, a resinous wax‐like beehive product (200 mg kg?1 orally, after mercury administration), for 3 days inhibited LPO and the formation of GSSG and increased the level of GSH in the liver. Release of serum transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase and γ‐glutamyl transpeptidase were significantly restored after propolis treatment. The activities of antioxidant enzymes, that is, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione‐S‐transferase and glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase, were also concomitantly restored towards normal levels after propolis administration. These observations clearly demonstrate that propolis treatment augments antioxidant defense against mercury‐induced toxicity and provide evidence that propolis has therapeutic potential as a hepatoprotective agent.  相似文献

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) has been immobilized on chitosan stabilized iron nanoparticles (CSIN) for the biomimetic carbonation reaction. CSIN was characterized using scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared analysis. The effect of various parameters such as pH, temperature and storage stability, on immobilized CA was investigated using a p-NPA assay. Kinetic parameters of immobilized and free CA (K m and V max values) were also evaluated. The K m and V max for immobilized CA was 1.727?mM and 1.189???mol?min?1?ml?1, respectively, whereas for free enzyme the K m and V max was 1.594?mM and 1.307???mol?min?1?ml?1, respectively. It was observed that the immobilized enzyme had longer storage stability and retained 50?% of its initial activity upto 30?days at room temperature. CA immobilized on CSIN has been used for hydration of CO2, and the results were validated by using a gas chromatographic method. Proof of concept has been established for the biomimetic carbonation reaction. Immobilized CA show reasonably good CO2 sequestration capacity of 21.55?mg of CaCO3/mg of CA as compared to CO2 sequestration capacity of 34.92?mg of CaCO3/mg of CA for free CA respectively, under a limiting concentration of CO2 (14.5?mg of CO2/10?ml).  相似文献

In the present investigation, we report the immobilization of the enzyme tyrosinase on mesoporous silica material, i.e. MCM-41 to serve as a tool for the detection of phenol. The enzyme immobilized onto the MCM-41 matrix has shown to retain its activity and is quite stable. The immobilization of enzyme has been discussed, and the various factors that affect the loading of enzyme onto MCM-41 were studied and optimized. The applicability of tyrosinase-immobilized MCM-41 was then demonstrated for the detection of phenol. The lowest detectable concentration of phenol by tyrosinase-immobilized MCM-41 was observed to be 1 mg l−1. The factors influencing the detection of phenol were then studied in detail.  相似文献

Between 2016 and 2020, seven new whitefly species were uncovered in the tropical Southern region of India, wrecking chaos among producers in certain invasive whitefly instances. The repercussions of climate change, improved free trade practices between countries, increased intercontinental migration, enhanced exim operations for planting supplies, etc., may have led to insect invasions. A limited number of invasive insect species only swelled to unmanageable proportions when entered into new geographic locations. Bondar’s Nesting Whitefly (BNW), Paraleyrodes bondari Peracchi (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), a native of Brazil to Honduras, was one such species. In May 2017, BNW noticed from the Indian Andaman and Nicobar islands, by December 2018 reached Indian mainland Kerala. Because of its co-existence with other whiteflies and cryptic appearance, BNW identification at immature stages can be challenging and may call for specific instruments and methods. Global analysis of BNW mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase (COI) indicated the presence of highly homogenous population. BNW is polyphagous, co-lives with other whiteflies and feeds by desapping from adaxial leaf surfaces of perennial and seasonal plants, crops, weeds etc., thus promoting sickliness. The land areas invaded and host plants exploited have increased within a short span from its introduction. BNW has no known parasitoids, and only non-specific predators utilize them. The presence of an intensive BNW population warrants frequent adoption of pest control practices. Even though insecticides bring down whiteflies, it is not the sole panacea. The information pertinent to BNW and its sustainable control is limited and scattered. These details mandate reviewing them concerning poly-crop systems practised in tropical ecosystems. This review discusses the possibilities of BNW becoming a significant pest of crops in tropical Indian mainlands and its management prospects.

Changes in Polyamine Titer in Rice Seedlings Following NaCl Salinity Stress   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Seedlings of four rice cultivars differing in salt tolerance were raised in sand cultures under increasing levels of NaCl salinity and metabolic levels of total polyamines, spermidine, spermine, agmatine and the diamine putrescine were determined in roots and shoots during 5-20 days growth period. Salinity caused a remarkable increase in total polyamines level in rice seedlings. At similar level of salinity roots as well as shoots of salt sensitive cvs. Ratna and Jaya showed higher level of total polyamines than tolerants. Salinity of 14 dSm−1 NaCl caused more than 2 times polyamine level in shoots of sensitive cultivars compared to tolerants. Accumulation of polyamines was greater in salt stressed shoots than roots. In nonsalinized seedlings there appeared a gradual increase in putrescine level during 5 to 20 days growth period. Salt treatment caused sharp increase in putrescine level in all cultivars, however under similar level of salinization salt stressed seedlings of sensitive cultivars had higher putrescine level than tolerants. In nonsalinized seedlings of sensitive cultivars spermidine level increased gradually during 5 to 20 days growth period whereas a decline in the level was observed in seedlings of tolerant cultivars during this period. Higher level of salinity caused marked increase in spermidine level in sensitive cultivars. Specially during 5 to 10 days of growth salinity caused increase in spermine level in seedlings of sensitive cultivars. In all cultivars salt stressed seedlings had higher agmatine level compared to non-stressed. Salinity led to greater accumulation of certain unidentified polyamines in seedlings of sensitive cultivars. Increased levels of total polyamines, putrescine, spermidine and unknown polyamines in rice seedlings under salinization suggest their possible role in combating the adverse effects of salinity stress.  相似文献

The feasibility of using surfactant-modified zeolite (SMZ) as a carrier for fertilizer and for slow release of phosphorus (P) was investigated. Zeolite-A was modified by using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, a cationic surfactant, to modify its surface to increase its capacity to retain anion, namely, phosphate (PO4(3-)). SMZ was thoroughly characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, and scanning electron microscopy to study the effect of surfactant modification. Zeolite-A and SMZ were then subjected to P loading by treating them with fertilizer (KH2PO4). It was observed that the P loading on SMZ increased by a factor of 4.9 as compared to the unmodified zeolite-A. A comparative study of the release of P from fertilizer-loaded unmodified zeolite-A and SMZ and from solid KH2PO4 was performed using the constant flow percolation reactor. The results show that the P supply from fertilizer-loaded SMZ was available even after 1080 h of continuous percolation, whereas P from KH2PO4 was exhausted within 264 h. The results indicate that SMZ is a good sorbent for PO4(3-), and a slow release of P was achievable. These properties suggest that SMZ has a great potential as the fertilizer carrier for slow release of P.  相似文献
