The present review presents data on fish requirement for B vitamins and describes their mechanism of action. Both general deficiency symptoms such as reduced growth and appetite, and more specific deficiency signs, for example abnormal swimming activity due to thiamine deficiency, are included. The rationale is to elucidate the need to establish B vitamin recommendations for fish fed practical diets where the major part consists of plant ingredients. Most requirement studies referred to were performed with semi‐purified diets with relatively low growth rate compared to the growth potential of the fish obtained with practical diets. Further, when giving salmon a plant‐based diet (70% plant ingredients), substantial lowered growth was obtained even when the diet was added vitamins according to the newest established requirements. New recommendations for B vitamin addition in plant‐based diets are therefore urgent. Few requirement studies exist and often with lack of dose–response data. For riboflavin and biotin, this review includes a meta‐analysis to support earlier requirement estimates. Too few data existed on the others to perform any meta‐analyses that made sense. Based on literature data, meta‐analyses, new experiments utilizing dose–response designs and identification of metabolic biomarkers, this review suggests new B vitamin recommendations for fish fed plant‐based diets. 相似文献

The present study describes signature lipid biomarkers in reclaimed mine soils (RMSs), an unreclaimed spoil and a natural soil (Vertisol) for a major coal mine basin in Eastern Europe. Alkanes, fatty acids and fatty alcohols, as well as coal biomarkers were abundant in the mine soils and the unreclaimed spoil. The alkanes distribution in the RMSs was bimodal with maxima at C18 and C29/C31 and points at two origins for the alkanes, terrigenous plants, including soil borne and from the coal source. Fatty acid carbon preference indices (CPIeven/odd = 10.4 and 8.1 for the mine soils under pine and grass vegetation) reflect the increasing role of terrestrial vegetation in the formation of organic matter. The higher concentrations of the long-chain alkanes, fatty acids and alcohols are speculated as the reason for the severe and extreme water repellency observed with the Vertisol and the unreclaimed spoil. The presence of terrigenous steroid and triterpenoid markers in the RMSs is an indication of the ongoing soil formation processes. The analysis of lipid extracts allowed for the assessment of sensitive molecular indicators of biogenic terrigenous and coal origin and the degree of soil recovery following >20 years of spoils reclamation. 相似文献

Background
Different cardiac troponin I (cTnI) assays give different results. Only 1 manufacturer has marketed troponin T (cTnT) assays. Therefore, cTnT often is preferred for detection of myocardial infarction in human patients. Studies of cTnT in horses are limited. Objectives
To compare a cTnI and a high‐sensitive cTnT assay (hs‐cTnT) in horses.Animals
Cardiac troponin I and cTnT were determined in 35 healthy horses (group 1), 23 horses suspected to have primary myocardial damage (group 2a), and 41 horses with secondary myocardial damage caused by structural heart disease (group 2b).Methods
All cTnI samples were analyzed at laboratory A (limit of detection [LOD]: 0.03 ng/mL), whereas cTnT samples were analyzed at 2 laboratories with the same hs‐cTnT assay (laboratory B, LOD: 10.0 pg/mL; laboratory C, LOD: 4.0 pg/mL).Results
The median cTnI concentration in group 2a (0.90 ng/mL; range, 0.03–58.27 ng/mL) was significantly higher (P < .001) than in group 1 (0.03 ng/mL; range, 0.03–0.09 ng/mL) or group 2b (0.05 ng/mL; range, 0.03–30.92 ng/mL), and the optimal cut‐off for detection of primary myocardial damage was 0.095 ng/mL (sensitivity: 90.5%, specificity: 100%). Using an LOD of 10.0 pg/mL for all cTnT samples, a cut‐off value of 10.5 pg/mL was found, but sensitivity was low (42.9%). When only samples analyzed at laboratory C (n = 58) were included, a cut‐off of 6.6 pg/mL was found (sensitivity: 81%, specificity: 100%).Conclusions and Clinical Importance
Despite large quantitative differences, cTnI and cTnT are both useful for detection of myocardial damage in horses. 相似文献76.
Presence of coastal aquaculture activities in marine landscapes is growing with impacts on the wild fish that share these habitats. However, it is difficult to disentangle subsequent ecological interactions between these activities and marine fish communities. We evaluated the impact of both salmon and halibut farms on mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and whiting (Merlangius merlangus) sampled near sea cages using condition indices and fatty acid (FA) biomarkers. Results of the stomach content analysis indicated that mackerel and whiting consumed waste feed which was also reflected in their modified FA profiles. Both mackerel and whiting had elevated levels of FAs that are of vegetable oils origin. The use of vegetable oils as replacement for marine oils is a lot more common in salmon farming than halibut farming. Additionally, the overall effects of the two fish farms were more pronounced in whiting than in mackerel sampled near the sea cages. By allowing discrimination between sources of trophic interactions, this method could lead to more informed decisions in managing different farming activities. 相似文献

ObjectiveAtrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) serve as biomarkers for increased cardiac pressure/volume loading and for myocardial stress or damage. The objective was to describe the time course of plasma ANP concentrations (CpANP) and plasma cTnI concentrations (CpcTnI) in horses with mitral regurgitation (MR) compared to healthy horses at rest and after exercise, and to describe the relationship of CpANP with cardiac dimensions and intracardiac pressures.Animals15 healthy Warmblood horses and 7 Warmblood horses with MR.MethodsCardiac dimensions at rest were measured using echocardiography. All horses underwent standardized treadmill exercise. Biomarker concentrations and intracardiac pressures were measured at rest and after exercise. Hypotheses were tested using statistical methods. The level of significance was P < 0.05.ResultsHorses with MR showed increased left atrial (LA) and left ventricular (LV) dimensions but similar exercise capacity compared to healthy horses. Pulmonary capillary wedge pressures (PCWP) and CpANP increased with exercise. Horses with MR had higher PCWP and higher CpANP at rest and after exercise compared to healthy horses, with the maximum difference in CpANP reached 10 min after exercise. CpANP was significantly related to PCWP and – although inconsistently and only in healthy horses – to echocardiographic indices of LA and LV size and function. CpcTnI was low throughout the study in both groups.ConclusionsCpANP is increased in horses with MR and is related to LA pressures and to left heart dimensions. MR is not necessarily associated with exercise intolerance and exercise-induced myocardial stress or damage. 相似文献

Objective – To evaluate the effects of noncardiac disease on c‐terminal brain natriuretic peptide (cBNP) concentrations in dogs. Design – Prospective observational study. Setting – Urban university veterinary hospital. Animals – Thirty‐eight apparently healthy dogs, 28 dogs with cardiac disease (14 CHF, 14 non‐CHF), and 81 dogs with primary noncardiac diseases. Interventions – none. Materials and Methods – Plasma was collected from each dog and analyzed for active (cBNP) B‐type natriuretic peptide using an assay that is being investigated for commercial use (Biosite). Measurements and Main Results – Dogs with CHF had significantly higher plasma cBNP concentrations than dogs with subclinical cardiac disease, apparently healthy dogs, or dogs with primary noncardiac disease. However, 21% (28/133) of dogs without CHF (including healthy dogs, dogs with primary noncardiac disease, and dogs with subclinical cardiac disease) had cBNP concentrations above previously identified diagnostic thresholds for CHF, reiterating the importance of reestablishing new diagnostic cutoffs when considering comorbidities affecting B‐type natriuretic peptide levels. Conclusions – A clinically relevant proportion of nondyspneic dogs with primary noncardiac diseases have increased cBNP concentrations that exceed previously identified diagnostic thresholds, potentially limiting the ability of this test to identify CHF when noncardiac comorbidities exist. Interpretation of increased cBNP concentrations in such cases must be appropriately interpreted with further diagnostic investigation. 相似文献

In 2000, troponin assays were adopted as the test of choice for detection of myocardial injury in man. This decision was made after extensive testing and followed a 60 year search for a biomarker of myocardial damage with sufficient analytical sensitivity and specificity. This has led to proliferation of assays for use in human medicine, each requiring extensive testing and validation before it could be made available on the open market for human use. The search for ever‐more analytically sensitive assays and for a standard reference material continues. The adoption of troponin testing in veterinary medicine followed shortly after its development for use in man, providing a much‐needed means of detecting and monitoring myocardial damage in horses. However, application of these tests in veterinary medicine has exclusively involved use of assays designed for and clinically validated in human patients. There is no mandated requirement for test validation in veterinary medicine and, while many of these assays have been shown to be capable of detecting equine troponin, the wide diversity of available tests, lack of validation, absence of protocols for their use and lack of standardisation make their application problematic. The objective of this review article is to address this issue, offering guidance where data are available and encouraging caution where there are none. Ultimately, the overall goal of this review is to examine critically the use of troponin assays in the horse and to promote the accurate and appropriate interpretation of valid results. 相似文献

ObjectivesTo document changes in urinary biomarker concentration and conventional diagnostic tests of acute kidney injury (AKI) following hypotension and fluid resuscitation in anaesthetized dogs.Study designExperimental, repeated measures, prospective study.AnimalsA group of six male adult Greyhound dogs.MethodsFollowing general anaesthesia, severe hypotension was induced by phlebotomy, maintaining mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) < 40 mmHg for 60 minutes, followed by resuscitation with intravenous gelatine solution to maintain MAP > 60 mmHg for 3 hours. Following euthanasia, renal tissue was examined by light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Urinary and serum concentrations of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), cystatin C (CysC), and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), serum creatinine and urine output were measured at baseline and hourly until euthanasia. Data are presented as mean and 95% confidence interval and analysed using repeated measures analysis of variance with Dunnett’s adjustment, p < 0.05.ResultsStructural damage to proximal renal tubular cells was evident on LM and TEM. Urinary biomarker concentrations were significantly elevated from baseline, peaking 2 hours after haemorrhage at 19.8 (15.1–25.9) ng mL–1 NGAL (p = 0.002), 2.54 (1.64–3.43) mg mL–1 CysC (p = 0.009) and 2043 (790–5458) U L–1 GGT (p < 0.001). Serum creatinine remained within a breed-specific reference interval in all dogs. Urinary protein–creatinine ratio (UPC) was significantly elevated in all dogs from 1 hour following haemorrhage. Conclusions and clinical relevanceUrinary NGAL, CysC and GGT concentrations, and UPC were consistently elevated within 1 hour of severe hypotension, suggesting that proximal renal tubules are damaged in the earliest stage of ischaemia-reperfusion AKI. Measurement of urinary biomarkers may allow early diagnosis of AKI in anaesthetized dogs. Urinary GGT concentration and UPC are particularly useful as they can be measured on standard biochemistry analysers. 相似文献
