Student Perceptions of an Online Model for Library Orientation in Agriculture and Related Disciplines

Orienting students to the library, its resources, and its services is a core function of many academic librarians working in public services roles. Librarians often spend considerable time and effort developing face-to-face or online library orientation activities. Many studies have addressed the effectiveness of library orientations on student learning, yet less is known about students' attitudes toward and opinions of these orientations. This study investigated student perceptions and opinions of an online library orientation for agriculture and related disciplines. Our results indicate that students recognize the value of the online library orientation as an important part of their student experience.     

Exploring Librarian Roles in Support of One Health

The growing One Health movement recognizes connections among human, animal, and ecosystem health and encourages collaboration among these disciplines. Fostering a One Health perspective in students and faculty is a strategic initiative of the Medical Sciences Library at Texas A&M University, which provides human and animal medicine, public health, agriculture, and life sciences programs. Librarians implemented a four-pronged approach to pilot One Health strategies among user communities—including developing curriculum modules, redesigning library learning spaces, and developing new research services. Aggregate data and participant comments from these activities support the value and feasibility of librarian engagement in One Health initiatives.

Research Support Services for the Field of Agriculture: Ithaka S+R Interviews and Themes for Libraries

ABSTRACT

As part of a larger, national survey, we performed an in-depth qualitative analysis using semistructured interviews and a standard set of questions. We wished to examine the research practices of faculty in agriculture, to understand what they need to be successful in their teaching and research. We plan to use this information to make improvements to research support services. The national survey results should help pinpoint opportunities for developing new research support services for agriculture. This study adds to library and information sciences by examining the specific needs of faculty members in agriculture and agricultural extension, groups that have been previously underrepresented in the library literature.

为学校教学科研提供高效的信息服务是高校图书馆工作的核心。信息环境下如何提高信息服务能力和服务质量是值得高校图书馆深思和探索的一个问题。从信息资源配置与开发、多元化服务方式、馆员素质等方面提出了图书馆应采取积极有效措施拓展服务领域,深化信息服务,提高服务质量。     

甘肃发展数字农业的几点思考

为了优化甘肃省农业产业链组织结构,提升产业链生产效率,根据《甘肃省“十四五”数字经济创新发展规划》统计数据,用数字农业理论分析了甘肃省数字农业发展现状与存在的问题。从平台建设、基地建设、技术创新、社会服务、人才培养等方面提出了甘肃省发展数字农业的建议:加强数字农业平台建设,打造基于产业链的综合性信息服务平台;强化数字农业技术研发,在遥感和气象领域进行技术突破;以数字技术创新推动农业社会化服务发展;重点建设一批具有引领带动作用的数字农业示范基地;重视数字农业学科发展,培养数字农业细分专项人才。     

Reaching Out: Land Grant Library Services to Cooperative Extension Offices,Experiment Stations,and Agriculture Science Centers

ABSTRACT

This paper discusses the need for agriculture librarians to more actively promote their services and library information resources to off campus extension and experiment station personnel. Services to off campus personnel include: conducting training sessions for them, providing e-mail reference, providing interlibrary loan and/or document delivery, providing access to periodical databases using a proxy server, and making visits to their off campus offices or research centers.     

中国设施农业气象业务服务现状与对策

设施农业的迅速发展和气象科技的不断进步催生了设施农业气象服务这一农业气象服务的新领域。设施农业由于自身反季节模式生产、可控的环境条件和高效的资源利用特点,因而对农业气象服务的要求具有特殊性。本文总结了不利气象条件对设施农业的影响,分析了设施农业气象发展现状,结果表明,现有的设施农业气象服务不能满足其在工程设计、区划布局、环境控制、资源利用等气象服务上的需求。针对现有问题从设施农业工程评估、气候资源区划、设施农业气象监测预警和服务网络体系、资源利用和节能以及适应、应对气候变化策略等方面提出相应的对策,以期为提高设施农业气象服务水平、增强设施农业防灾减灾能力、保障设施农业可持续发展提供思路。     

Research Practices and Support Needs of Scholars in the Field of Agriculture at Cornell University

ABSTRACT

This article presents the results of one of numerous and coordinated qualitative studies carried out at land-grant universities across the United States, to improve our understanding of agricultural research practices and identify new avenues for library services to meet the changing needs of agricultural faculty and research staff. We interviewed agricultural researchers across several departments at Cornell University about their research practices including research dissemination methods, data sharing, their use of primary and secondary resources, and current challenges in conducting agricultural research. Emerging themes included stakeholder engagement, collaboration and interdisciplinarity, the impact of technology, and research inputs and outputs.     

Education for Agriculture and Allied Subjects in India

India, predominantly an agricultural country, has significantly improved the well-being of its people in recent decades. However, poverty remains India's most compelling challenge. With over half a century of development, agricultural education and research have been instrumental in ushering in a Green Revolution in the country. The United States land-grant colleges’ model of teaching, research, and extension began in India in 1962 with the establishment of the first university specializing in agriculture. During the past 60 years, agricultural education has expanded rapidly in India to meet the nation's demand for human resources and agricultural technology. Currently, India has a total of 41 agricultural universities with a mandate for teaching, research, and extension in each of the states or regions. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), an apex body established by the government of India, oversees the working and accreditation aspects of the State Agricultural Universities. This article gives an overview of the past and reviews the present structure of education in agriculture and allied subjects at various levels.

Organization of the Delivery of Scientific,Technical, and Economic Information to the Sector of Agriculture in the Slovak Republic

The hub of agricultural production and education, and the center of scientific and technological information dissemination relevant to Slovak agriculture is Nitra, located in the southwestern part of Slovakia. Preeminent among the libraries of the agricultural sector is the Slovak Agricultural Library in Nitra, which serves as the branch library of Ùvtiz in Prague and as the library for the University of Agriculture. In addition to providing traditional library and information services, library staff also provide analystical reports used for forecasting and policy development by the Ministry of Agriculture and Nutrition.

武威地区开展中药生态农业研究具有非常重要的生态效益、经济价值和社会效益，为促进武威地区中药材产业的高质量发展和开展中药生态农业研究提供理论依据。对武威市现有中药材种质资源、生态栽培技术以及中药生态农业的发展现状进行了分析，提出了把中药生态产业作为武威市乡村振兴的主导产业、聚焦产业开展多学科联合攻关、开启“中药景观生态农业”发展模式、推进中药材种子种苗生态栽培基地建设、强化GAP规范化生产管理和中药材种植生态化等适宜武威市中药生态农业发展的建议。     

高职高专院校图书馆学科馆员职能探析

学科馆员制度是高校图书馆以学科专业为服务对象而开展的主动的、个性化的、深层次的服务措施,是现代社会中高职院校图书馆实现传统型服务服务向知识型服务转变的一种服务方式。高等职业教育的培养目标是实用性的高技能人才。结合高等职业教育的特点,探讨了高职高专院校图书馆作为校园的三大支柱产业之一,实行学科馆员制度的重要性,以及从哪些方面开展工作和如何开展工作。     

Mapping Land Suitability for Agriculture in Malawi

Population growth, climate sensitivity, and edaphic properties are important factors that influence decision‐making and risk mitigation for agricultural production. Within the agricultural sector in Malawi, continuous cropping without the use of long‐term sustainable strategies and frequent cultivation on marginal lands have resulted in continually declining soil fertility. Improving soil quality of marginal lands using innovative technologies is imperative for increasing agricultural productivity and improving food security. Here, we propose an ensemble approach to map agricultural land suitability and identify the distribution of marginal land in Malawi. Quantitative data available for eight soil and terrain factors were rated individually, and five distinct models were applied to generate a spatial distribution map of land suitability. The results indicate that highly suitable, moderately suitable, marginally suitable, and unsuitable agricultural areas account for 8·2%, 24·1%, 28·0%, and 39·7% of the total land area, respectively. The majority of suitable lands are currently used for agriculture, but more than half (57·4%) of Malawi's total cropland exists on marginally suitable or unsuitable land categories and is likely a candidate for rehabilitation through sustainable agricultural practices. The methods and products herein will be valuable resources for effectively managing and improving Malawi's agricultural lands for increasing food security. An Assessment of the Contribution of Urban Crop Agriculture in Nigerian Cities: A Case Study of Enugu Metropolis,Enugu State,Nigeria

This study examined the contribution of urban crop agriculture in Enugu metropolis, Enugu State. A questionnaire/interview schedule was used to collect information from 60 urban agriculture (UA) farmers. Respondents were engaged in UA to provide food for family members (97%), for extra income (91.67%), and to pay children's school fees (85.45%). The average amount realized from sales of UA produce was US$11 per week. The destruction of crops by stray animals, theft, and lack of information were identified as the major barriers to UA in the study area. Only 20% of the respondents were aware of extension services. Urban agriculture as practiced today in Enugu is of limited scale. To reach its full potential, government intervention is needed.

Comparing AGRICOLA by Vendor

ABSTRACT

AGRICOLA is a widely used bibliographic database of over 4,000,000 records covering all aspects of agriculture and related sciences. In addition to free access via the National Agricultural Library's web site, AGRICOLA is available through a variety of vendors. To help librarians understand the different versions of AGRICOLA, this article compares access through CSA, Community of Science, FirstSearch, Ovid and SilverPlatter. Evaluation criteria include: search modes and limits allowed; display options; capacity to link to library catalog and document delivery services; ability to save, print, and/or e-mail search results; ability to save searches, or to search multiple databases; and availability of alert services.
