This study was designed to determine if oyster spat fouling upon adult oysters, Crassostrea virginica, cultured in coastal Georgia could be controlled by stocking density, bag mesh size, substrate type, and tidal level (intertidally or subtidally). Oyster gowth and survival was also monitored for each treatment. Sediment type had no effect on the number of spat per oyster either in intertidal or subtidal areas. Greater growth occurred in subtidal bags placed on sandmud and sandclay substrates. Intertidal mud and sandhnud bottom treatments showed the least growth. Survival of oysters grown intertidally (64%) was better the those cultured subtidally (27%). Mesh size of the oyster growing bags -had no effect upon oysler fouling or growth (shell length) and survival of the oysters they contained. Stocking density did affect oyster fouling, with lower fouling per oyster in higher density treatments. Density had no effect on oyster growth (shell length) or survival at the levels tested. Heavy fouling occurred on all oysters in the mesh and stocking density experiments while they were suspended off-bottom, but an I l -fold decrease in fouling occurred after bags were placed on the sublidal river bottom.  相似文献

We evaluated growth and survival rates of Pinctadaimbricata in relation to environmental changes during nine months insuspended and bottom culture in the Golfo de Cariaco, Venezuela. Juveniles, measuring 13 mm in length, were cultured using two methods, (1) inSpanish-type baskets suspended at 3–4 m in depth from a longline and (2) in baskets embedded on the seabed (7–8 m indepth). At monthly intervals, we quantified mortality and took a sample ofoysters to determine shell length (dorsal-ventral axis) and the dry mass of theshell, muscle and remaining tissues. We also quantified the dry mass of foulingon the shells (a potentially important environmental factor). Survival rateswere slightly higher in suspended culture (98–100%), although notsignificantly higher than on the bottom. The growth rate was higher in suspendedculture than on the bottom culture, and the difference between culture methodswas greater for tissue and shell biomass than for shell dimensions. At the endof the study, oysters measured 55 mm in shell length for oysters insuspension and 45 mm for those on the bottom. Although growth wasnot significantly correlated with any environmental factor, it tended toincrease with increases in chlorophyll a during periods ofupwelling, thus suggesting that phytoplankton abundance enhanced the growth ofPinctada imbricata. The pearl oyster Pinctadaimbricata should be an excellent species for aquaculture activities, given its high rates of growth and survival in suspended culture and itseconomic importance in the Caribbean region.  相似文献

The growth, survival and influence of environmental factors were analysed in two cohorts of cultured Pteria sterna in Ayangue Bay, Province of Santa Elena, Ecuador (tropical Eastern Pacific). Juveniles representing cohorts I and II (8.4 ± 0.54 and 5.0 ± 0.17 mm in dorso‐ventral axis) were deployed in November 2015 and February 2016, and grown in pearl nets suspended in a long line for 12 and 10 months respectively. The stocking density was monthly and bi‐monthly reduced during sampling of individuals to determine growth in dorso‐ventral shell axis, dry mass of shell, soft tissues and dry mass of fouling on shell. Water temperature, salinity, total seston and phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) were determined at the culture site. Results showed that P. sterna reached ~100 mm in length during the first year of culture. Although little negative influence of environmental factors was detected, high temperatures during the reproduction period can be the most negative influential trait. The highest tissue mass (6 g), which occurred at the 10th month of cultivation, as well as a high availability of spat by artificial collectors in the coastal waters, showed that the species can be considered a good candidate for aquaculture in the tropical eastern Pacific.  相似文献

Oysters Crassostrea virginica in Georgia are naturally small and grow in clusters; however, it is more profitable to harvest large, single oysters. This study attempts to identify favorable tidal and bottom placements for the grow-out of large, single oysters in Georgia. Three bags, each containing 50 single oysters, were placed in four different tidal positions (subtidal on-bottom, subtidal off-bottom, intertidal on-bottom and intertidal off-bottom) at five sites in House Creek, Georgia. Measurements of oyster growth, survival and degree of oyster spat fouling were taken seasonally (every 3 mo). Oysters from on-bottom treatments exhibited significantly lower growth ( P = 0.0364 intertidal only), survival ( P = 0.0044) and degree of fouling ( P = 0.0154) than oysters from the intertidal off-bottom treatment. However, the oysters placed intertidally off-bottom were heavily fouled during the recruitment period. It may be necessary to sacrifice some growth and survival by culturing oysters intertidally on-bottom during the recruitment period in order to reduce the degree of fouling. During the non-recruitment period, placing oyster culture bags intertidally off-bottom maximizes growth and survival.  相似文献

Biofouling on the periostracum of pearl oysters and on the cages has been considered as a stress factor causing mortality of the farmed stock, reducing growth rates and also affecting pearl quality. In farming experiments using the pearl oyster, Pinctada fucata, at Kollam Bay (India), biofouling was found to be a problem. This study was conducted to understand the effect of fouling on the mortality of pearl oysters kept in suspended culture, to identify the main foulers, the seasonal variation in biofouling and species successions in the community with reference to abiotic factors. The average monthly mortality rate (MR) was estimated as 0.117 ± 0.002 and the monthly variations were significantly different (P < 0.01). The total fouling (0.163 ± 0.002 g/g oyster) and biofouling weights (0.166 ± 0.007 g/g oyster) were high in December when the fouling community was composed of several species and dominated by the ascidian, Didemnum sp. December was also the period when the MRs peaked indicating that this organism was the main cause of mortality in pearl farms in Kollam Bay. A clear seasonality in the fouling community (25 species belonging to nine phyla) has been observed in the present study. On the basis of this study, monthly cleaning of oysters is advocated except during December, January, and March when the cleaning should be fortnightly.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of culture mode (intertidal and off‐bottom suspended culture) and initial stocking density (5%, 10%, 35% and 70% bottom cover) on survival, growth and condition indices of three size cohorts (16, 22 and 32 mm initial shell length) of the basket cockle, Clinocardium nuttallii, during a second year of grow‐out. In addition, we evaluated the effects of depth (2, 4 and 6 m) in suspended culture. All size cohorts demonstrated significantly higher growth rates, soft‐tissue biomass and condition indices in the off‐bottom suspended system compared to the intertidal one. In suspended culture, however, C. nuttallii exhibited sub‐optimal survival, shell deformities and heavy fouling. For all size cohorts, stocking density had a significant effect on most growth and condition parameters, except meat yield indices, in both culture modes. An initial maximum stocking density of 10% cover is recommended for all size cohorts. Culture depth did not have a consistent statistically significant effect on any of the growth or condition parameters. Depending on the grow‐out scenario, stocking density and harvestable size chosen, the cumulative harvestable proportion after the second year of grow‐out constituted 15.5–63.1% of the seed planted. Our results could be used to develop and improve culture techniques for C. nuttallii and other cockle species.  相似文献

To examine the impact of fouling organisms on the growth and survival of the scallop Euvola ziczac L., we maintained 31-34-mm juveniles in pearl nets at 8 m in depth at Turpialito, Golfo de Cariaco, Venezuela. The experiment ran for a 67-d period under four conditions: (1) shells and nets cleaned; (2) shells not cleaned and nets cleaned; (3) shells cleaned and nets not cleaned; and (4) shells and nets not cleaned. The growth of the scallop was least when fouling developed on both the pearl nets and scallop shells. The rate of growth of the shell (height and mass) was strongly affected by organisms colonizing the pearl nets and only weakly affected by organisms colonizing the shells. Fouling organisms on the shells only slightly affected rates of increase of tissue mass, but probably accounted for increased mortality. In developing commercial culture of E. ziczac, strategies need to be developed to limit the adverse effects of fouling on yield.  相似文献

The objective was to design and evaluate a suspension oyster tray unit to optimize conditions necessary for the successful commercial culture of Pacific oysters for the half-shell trade. Units were located at two sites in Trevenen Bay. One location was sheltered and calm; the other was a natural tidal raceway with intense current flow. The purpose was to test the ability of the design to provide uniform growth, retard fouling, be handled efficiently and be economically feasible to construct. Assessing performance was based on monitoring shell growth, condition index, fouling occurrence, materials handling and the capital costs of the system. Field experimentation began in June and terminated in October 1979. Suspension tray units performed similarly at both sites, exhibited little variation in shell growth in the series of five trays in an assembly, retarded fouling and proved economically feasible for commercial use.  相似文献

Current shrimp pond management practices generally result in elevated concentrations of nutrients, suspended solids, bacteria and phytoplankton compared with the influent water. Concerns about adverse environmental impacts caused by discharging pond effluent directly into adjacent waterways have prompted the search for cost‐effective methods of effluent treatment. One potential method of effluent treatment is the use of ponds or raceways stocked with plants or animals that act as natural biofilters by removing waste nutrients. In addition to improving effluent water quality prior to discharge, the use of natural biofilters provides a method for capturing otherwise wasted nutrients. This study examined the potential of the native oyster, Saccostrea commercialis (Iredale and Roughley) and macroalgae, Gracilaria edulis (Gmelin) Silva to improve effluent water quality from a commercial Penaeus japonicus (Bate) shrimp farm. A system of raceways was constructed to permit recirculation of the effluent through the oysters to maximize the filtration of bacteria, phytoplankton and total suspended solids. A series of experiments was conducted to test the ability of oysters and macroalgae to improve effluent water quality in a flow‐through system compared with a recirculating system. In the flow‐through system, oysters reduced the concentration of bacteria to 35% of the initial concentration, chlorophyll a to 39%, total particulates (2.28–35.2 µm) to 29%, total nitrogen to 66% and total phosphorus to 56%. Under the recirculating flow regime, the ability of the oysters to improve water quality was significantly enhanced. After four circuits, total bacterial numbers were reduced to 12%, chlorophyll a to 4%, and total suspended solids to 16%. Efforts to increase biofiltration by adding additional layers of oyster trays and macroalgae‐filled mesh bags resulted in fouling of the lower layers causing the death of oysters and senescence of macroalgae. Supplementary laboratory experiments were designed to examine the effects of high effluent concentrations of suspended particulates on the growth and condition of oysters and macroalgae. The results demonstrated that high concentrations of particulates inhibited growth and reduced the condition of oysters and macroalgae. Allowing the effluent to settle before biofiltration improved growth and reduced signs of stress in the oysters and macroalgae. A settling time of 6 h reduced particulates to a level that prevented fouling of the oysters and macroalgae.  相似文献

To investigate the possibility of establishing oyster culture in Malta, growth trials with C. gigas and O. edulis were undertaken. The oysters were placed in floating cages at depths of 3 and 8 m at Marsaxlokk bay, Mistra bay and Rinella creek. These oysters were sampled at two-month intervals for their growth, meat-shell index and survival. The temperature, salinity, oxygen tension, chlorophyll-a levels and the levels of particulate matter in suspension in the water at the test sites were monitored concurrently. A programme of qualitative and quantitative analyses of the natural phytoplankton population was also carried out.O. edulis suffered catastrophic summer mortalities at all locations when the ambient temperature of the water reached about 25°C; this virtually rules out any possibility of starting any flat oyster industry using this system. As for C. gigas, Marsaxlokk bay 3 m appears to hold some promise for its culture. At this location, this species showed reasonable growth, relatively low mortality and normal shell growth. Although at Rinella overall growth of C. gigas was comparable to that at Marsaxlokk at 3 m, the Rinella oysters accumulated copper and exhibited abnormal and thickened shell growth with the result that the oysters were of a much inferior condition. Growth at Mistra (both depths) and Marsaxlokk 8 m was stunted. No clear correlation could be established between the performance of the oysters and the environmental parameters monitored. Several factors that may have been responsible for the observed differences in oyster performance are discussed. In particular, the nature of the water movements is thought to have played a key role in dictating the growth of the oysters.  相似文献

Laser labeling techniques have been developed for breeding programs in aquatic organisms through this study. This study assessed their use in Hyriopsis cumingii, an important Chinese freshwater pearl mussel. In preliminary studies, H. cumingii juveniles between 55 and 95?days old were labeled by a laser engraving machine. The mortality rate decreased in an age-dependent manner, no differences in growth between treated and unlabeled juveniles at 85 and 95?days of age. Hundred-day-old juveniles were labeled with four different sized labels. The mortality rate and growth inhibition were significantly higher with the largest label size (2.55?cm) compared to the smaller size and control. Four different types of laser intensity were applied to 100-day-old juveniles, but mortality rates and growth inhibition after high current treatments were significantly higher than the lower currents and control. The wing part, center, lower edge, left edge and right edge were labeled in different 100-day-old juveniles. Labeling of the left edge caused higher mortality and growth inhibition than the other sites. No significant differences were found after either side of the shell was labeled compared to the control. All labels remained clear without any deformation after several months. In summary, the optimal strategy for the laser labeling of H. cumingii would be in juveniles >85?days. The label size, laser intensity and positions could affect their growth and survival. There was no difference labeling either side of the shell. This study showed laser labeling is a relatively simple and practical marking method for mussels such as H. cumingii.  相似文献

The seasonal growth and survival of experimental batches of hatchery-reared spat of the European oyster (Ostrea edulis) and the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) was followed in North Wales during the period 1972 to 1975. Three methods of tray cultivation were compared. These were: (a) trays suspended from a raft in the Menai Straits, (b) trays supported on trestles on the foreshore of the Menai Straits, and (c) trays in a laboratory nursery system which were supplied with sea water from Conwy estuary via a pumped storage system.Growth of oysters in the nursery system was consistently inferior to that of oysters kept at either site in the sea. Although in several years there were significant differences between the growth of oysters on the raft and in trays supported by trestles, on average neither site consistently produced larger oysters.Survival was significantly better in the nursery system for both species of oyster, but no consistent differences in survival were observed between either site in the sea.Seasonal growth of both species of oyster as well as the mortality of O. edulis were positively related to temperature. It was concluded on the basis of cost that (i) cultivation in systems employing pumped sea water would not be viable in the long term, and (ii) raft cultivation would only be suitable for post-hatchery sized oysters up to about 5 g live weight.  相似文献

Pontoons made from plastic pipe were tested as an alternative to racks for deepwater culture of the Sydney rock oyster. The growth and mortality of oysters permanently suspended in water on trays beneath floating pontoons were compared with oysters on trays in an intertidal zone. For both culled spat (30–31 g whole oyster weight) and seconds oysters (37–39 g) beneath pontoons the growth rate, measured by weight increases, was three times that of oysters on intertidal racks over a 5-month period. Mortality (from unknown causes) was higher beneath the pontoons. The mean mortality of spat oysters was 40% compared with 24% on the intertidal trays, and for seconds oysters was 51% compared with 34%.  相似文献

This study compares the effect of two anti‐fouling treatments, hot water immersion (15 s at 60°C) and air drying (72 h) on the physiological status of the Eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica. The negative impact of hot water immersion was greater than that of air drying, but varied depending on the initial size of the oysters (40 vs. 60 mm shell height) and the time of the year (June vs. August). Groups treated with hot water exhibited a higher proportion of haemocytes with destabilized lysosomal membranes (HDLM; 47.5 ± 3.1%) than those exposed to air drying (37.5 ± 2.9%). This suggests that the oyster immunocompetency may be lowered by hot water immersion. Overall, the large oysters had lower HDLM values (32.9 ± 3.5%) than the small individuals in June (45.7 ± 2.8%) but similar values in August (46.6 ± 3.5%). Small oysters subjected to hot water immersion in June exhibited a 50% reduction in shell growth and a 50% mortality rate after one month. Our results indicate that air drying is more suitable than hot water immersion as an anti‐fouling treatment for <45 mm oysters.  相似文献

We evaluated the growth of mussels Perna perna and Perna viridis in suspended culture in the Golfo de Cariaco in Venezuela. Juveniles were cultured for up to 13 mo on cultch strings suspended from longline, with monthly sampling for determination of shell length and dry weights of shell and soft tissues. Water temperature, oxygen, salinity, chlorophyll a, seston, and shell fouling were also monitored. In both species, growth during the first 5 mo (the stratification period in the region) was slow. Subsequently, the onset of the coastal upwelling period (November/December) generated lower temperatures and higher plankton levels, correlated with higher growth rates, particularly in P. perna, which by the end of the experiment had reached a mean length 1.3‐fold greater than that of P. viridis (95.3 ± 7.91 vs. 73.3 ± 6.99 mm) together with a 1.9‐fold greater somatic tissue. Likewise, reproductive activity differed between the two species, P. perna showing a higher gonad development and its reproductive activity starting earlier than that of P. viridis. Our results show that P. perna presents higher growth and survival than P. viridis in suspension culture, a fact related to a greater tolerance to the environmental characteristics of the Golfo de Cariaco.  相似文献

This paper reports on 5 experiments conducted to assess the effect of cleaning regime and predation on growth and survival of blacklip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) juveniles in north Queensland, Australia. P. margaritifera juveniles with a mean (±SE) dorso-ventral shell height (DVH) of 4.5 ± 0.1 mm were placed into plastic mesh trays and cleaned either every 4 or 8 weeks or left uncleaned for 16 weeks. Cleaning regime had a significant effect on growth and survival (P < 0.005). Lowest DVH (16.2 ± 1.0) was shown by oysters in uncleaned trays during 16 weeks compared to oysters in cleaned trays; however, there was no significant difference in DVH between oysters held in trays cleaned every 4 (19.4 ± 1.2) or 8 weeks (21.2 ± 0.8). In contrast lowest survival was shown by oysters held in trays that were cleaned every 4 weeks (30 ± 5%), but no differences were noted between oysters cleaned every 8 weeks (63 ± 4%) and oysters that were left uncleaned for 16 weeks (75 ± 8%). Predators of P. margaritifera in northern Australia included crabs, stomatopods, flatworms, gastropods and fish. The stomatopod, Gonodactylus falcatus, was the most destructive predator with individuals consuming in excess of 20 juvenile pearl oysters per week. The leather jacket, Paramonocanthus japonicus, did not kill pearl oysters, but trimmed the margin of oysters shells significantly reducing DVH when compared to control groups cultured without fish. Removing predators monthly had a significant effect on growth of pearl oysters compared to oysters in non-inspected trays; however monthly inspection of culture trays did not significantly improve oyster survival. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We investigated the early growth and reproduction of hatchery-produced Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas raised in a suspended long-line facility in Gamakman Bay, off the south coast of Korea. In October 2009, 4?months after transplanting, shell length had increased from 27.4 (July) to 82.5?mm (October), and tissue weight had increased from 0.2 to 5.2?g, indicating that the oyster had reached a marketable size in this month. Histological studies indicated rapid gonad maturation, and the oysters spawned during August and October, with a peak in September. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay used to quantify egg biomass revealed that the oysters produced a relatively small quantity of eggs, ranging from 5.1?% (August) to 8.8?% (September) of their body weight. The low total carbohydrate reserve in the tissue recorded in August and September coincided with intense energy utilization due to spawning, while the protein maximum in September matched peak egg mass. Our results suggest that hatchery-produced seed could supply a portion of the spat required in Gamakman Bay as well as in other oyster culture grounds of Korea, where the oyster industry is facing a shortage in the supply of natural spat.  相似文献

We examined the growth, survival and immune response of the scallop, Chlamys farreri, during a 1‐year period in deep water of Haizhou Bay. Scallops were cultured using two methods: (1) in lantern nets at a 5 m depth and (2) in a bottom culture system (sleeves) on the seabed at about a 25 m depth. Shell heights, meat dry weight and immune activities in the haemolymph (superoxide dismutase and myeloperoxidase) were measured bimonthly or quarterly from July 2007 to June 2008. Survival was measured at the end of the study and environmental parameters in the experimental layers were monitored during the experiment. The growth and immune activities of scallops were lower when the water temperature was high, which was consistent with the main mortality occurring in summer. The growth and immunity of scallops were higher in the suspended culture than in the bottom culture during the experiment, with the exception of shell growth during the last study period. Survival of scallops in the suspended culture (54.6±12.3%) was significantly lower than that in the bottom culture (86.8±3.5%) at the end of this study. We conclude from our results that the high mortality of C. farreri can be prevented by culturing them in a bottom culture system before November of the first year, and then transferring them to a suspended culture to improve scallop production.  相似文献
