This is the third survey of control practices for ectoparasites on sheep farms in Northern Ireland, providing data comparative to those recorded in previous surveys in 1981 and 1988. Data relating to all aspects of ectoparasite control were collected from 210 farms representing 4% of the total sheep population. Quantitative data have been adjusted to provide accurate estimates of total pesticide usage. Since the previous survey in 1988, the number of sheep farms in Northern Ireland has increased by 10% to 11 692 with a consequent 39% increase in sheep population to 2.9 million. Despite this level of expansion, the total quantity of organophosphorus compounds used for ectoparasite control has remained approximately constant at 7–8 tonnes. The report considers that compulsory sheep‐dipping, prescribed since 1970 and revoked in 1993, impacted significantly on subsequent ectoparasite control practices and consequent pesticide usage. During 1997, approximately 20% of sheep farmers relied on alternative methods to control ectoparasites, including injectable formulations of avermectins and pour‐on formulations of insect growth regulators and pyrethroids. Dipping formulations containing pyrethroid compounds, which accounted for <1% of treatments in 1988, increased to 9% in 1997. Previously, regulatory sheep‐dipping periods were specified during the autumn months, which tended to increase dipping frequency. The majority of farmers dipping sheep during the summer strictly for blowfly maggot (Diptera: Calliphoridae) control were required to perform additional compulsory sheep‐dipping during the autumn. Withdrawal of compulsory sheep‐dipping has allowed farmers to synchronise dipping practices to control the major ectoparasites of sheep at a single dipping occasion. An estimated 7.5 × 106 litres of surplus dipwash required disposal and there were approximately equal numbers of farmers disposing dipwash immediately after sheep‐dipping or on occasions up to and including subsequent dipping. The decline in the number of farmers who allowed dipwash to run‐off into soakaways or surrounding soil observed in 1988 continued in 1997. The majority of farmers used tractor‐operated pumps to dispose of dipwash into slurry tanks for subsequent disposal onto permanent pasture. © Crown copyright 2000. The molecular weight pattern and the stage-specific activities of chitinases from the blowfly Lucilia cuprina, the tick Boophilus microplus and the intestinal nematode Haemonchus contortus were examined. Chitinolytic enzymes could be detected in all parasite species tested, but the activity was different between the stages. Highest chitinolytic titers were found in blowfly pupae (83 kDa, 118 kDa), hatching larvae of ticks (58 kDa, 94 kDa) and nematode eggs (43 kDa). Leaves from ethylene-treated bean plants Phaseolus vulgaris expressed two basic Class I chitinases (Ia, Ib) of 34 kDa, differing in their amino acid sequences at residue 33 and 34 (Ia: glycine, proline; Ib: lysine, aspartic acid). Inhibitor studies with blowfly pupae revealed that allosamidin (IC50=0·32 (±0·02) μM ) was by far the best inhibitor when compared with various amino sugar derivatives. This compound also inhibited chitinases from tick larvae (IC50=0·69(±0·10) μM ) and nematode eggs (IC50=0·048(±0·0045) μM ) specifically. Whereas Class Ia chitinase from bean leaves was inhibited only up to 18% by 10 μM allosamidin, it had an IC50 of 1(±0·14) μM for the Ib type, which is the first plant chitinase described to be highly sensitive to allosamidin.  相似文献

Objective To determine whether there is any need for woolgrowers to add diazinon to cyromazine jetting fluid to control active flystrike on sheep.
Method Larval implants were placed on 143 sheep and allowed to develop for 2 days. Groups of 47 or 48 of these struck sheep were jetted with cyromazine at 1000 mg/L, diazinon at 400 mg/L, or a mixture of the two. After treatment, the implants were assessed daily for 3 days for the presence of feeding larvae.
Results When checked 1 day after treatment, there was a 62% reduction in flystrike in the diazinon treated sheep compared to only 12% reduction on the cyromazine treated sheep. Flystrike reduction on the sheep jetted with the mixture of cyromazine and diazinon was 69%. Three days after treatment flystrike control was 97 to 99% in the latter two groups.
Conclusion Diazinon provided a faster resolution of strikes but by 3 days after treatment there was no significant difference in the number of implants remaining active on the sheep treated with cyromazine or with the mixture of cyro-mazine and diazinon.  相似文献

东方实蝇蛹俑小蜂在山西可从4种蝇蛹内羽化出,每只蝇蛹羽化出一头蜂。成蜂6月出现,11月底消失,7~9月较多。主要活动于畜禽养殖场等堆粪场所。适宜宿主为家蝇、厩腐蝇与丝光绿蝇的1~2日龄蛹。该蜂以触角寻找宿主、辨别日龄。在20~25℃、RH80~90%、10小时光照条件下,完成一代需18~20天。雄蜂寿命4~15天;雌蜂10~20天。雌雄比为1.3~2:1。防治蝇蛹试验表阴:蜂蛹比例为1:5时,家蝇的死亡率为71%、厩腐蝇为94.4%、丝光绿蝇为99.9%、大头金蝇为53.3%。每头雌蜂可灭蝇蛹10~30头。  相似文献

The potential of known and new insecticides to interfere with cuticle sclerotization was investigated using assays for key enzymes such as phenoloxidase, quinone methide isomerase and DOPA decarboxylase. Homogenates from the blowfly Lucilia cuprina and from the epithelial cell line from Chironomus tentans were used to examine the compounds under investigation. Phenoloxidases are known to oxidize DOPA, the substrate for DOPA decarboxylase. Since phenoloxidases were not detectable in C. tentans cell homogenates, inhibitor and kinetic studies were done for comparison with DOPA decarboxylase of this insect cell line. DOPA decarboxylase and phenoloxidase of L. cuprina exerted highest specific activities at early pupal stages (day 7). The apparent Km values for the two enzymes were 0·47(±0·21) mM and 0·71(±0·16) mM , respectively, using L -DOPA as substrate. DOPA decarboxylase from C. tentans had a Km value of 0·42(±0·18) mM . Quinone methide isomerase was most active in young pupae. In terms of substrate specificity for enzymic (mushroom-tyrosinase) production of different quinones from their corresponding catechols, that with dopamine quinone proved to be the most efficient. Synthesis of derivatives of L -DOPA and L -tyrosine led to a compound which inhibited both phenoloxidase and quinone methide isomerase. DOPA decarboxylase from L. cuprina and from cells of C. tentans was inhibited by carbidopa (IC50 values of 0·021(±0·011) μM and 0·031(±0·019) μM , respectively) and indomethacine (IC50 values of 22·6(±7·1) μM and 18·8(±9·7) μM ). Both compounds exerted a competitive type of inhibition and were able to interfere with development of L. cuprina.  相似文献

The use of fly-traps for the control of sheep blowfly strike was examined on 12 commercial sheep farms in south west England in 2003. Two flocks acted as controls, with no prophylactic blowfly strike control. Four flocks of lambs and three flocks of ewes were protected only by blowfly traps, seven of the flocks of ewes and six flocks of lambs were protected by blowfly traps but also had proprietary insecticides applied to them at some stage. There was no difference in the abundance of L. sericata at the various sites. The highest incidence of strike was seen in the two control flocks where 10.9 and 5.8% of the ewes and 10.1 and 9.2% of the lambs were struck. Strike incidence in the flocks that used trapping only and flocks that used trapping plus a chemical preventive was on average five times lower than in the control flocks, but the percentages struck on the sites in the trapping only and trapping plus insecticide groups were not significantly different from each other. The results of this study show that traps can make an effective contribution to blowfly strike control on individual farms.  相似文献
