Early-maturing maize (Zea Mays L.) germplasm developed from diverse sources has the potential for use in developing maize hybrids suitable for increasing maize production in the dry ecologies of eastern Africa. A diallel study was conducted to estimate general combining ability (GCA) of 12 early-maturing maize inbred lines, identify potential single-cross hybrids for use as parents, assess genetic diversity among the inbred lines, and relate genetic distance to specific combining ability (SCA) and hybrid performance. Sixty-six F1 diallel hybrids were evaluated under optimal and drought stress conditions at four locations in Kenya and Uganda. The parental inbred lines were genotyped using 94 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Additive gene action was more important than nonadditive gene action for inheritance of grain yield (GY) under optimal conditions. However, nonadditive gene effects were more important in the inheritance of GY under drought and across all environments. Inbred lines CKL0722, VL058014, and CZL0724 were among the best with positive GCA effects for GY across both optimal and drought stress conditions. The correlation between SCA and both genetic distance and F1 GY was significant under both drought stress and across all environments. Inbred lines with desirable GCA effects for GY and other agronomic traits and hybrids with good performance under both optimal and drought stress conditions are potential parents for development of various types of high-yielding, stress-tolerant, and early-maturing hybrids.  相似文献

Gaining a detailed knowledge on the impact of a feedstuff on pig growth and physiological responses is critical for its effective utilization. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of distillers dried grains with solubles derived from co‐fermentation of wheat and corn (wcDDGS) on performance, carcass and visceral organ weights, whole‐body O2 consumption and heat production (HP) in growing barrows. The experimental diets were as follows: corn–soybean meal diet (Control), Control + 15% wcDDGS and Control + 30% wcDDGS. In Exp. 1, 48 pair‐housed pigs of average BW 18.6 ± 1.5 kg (mean ± SD) were allotted to the 3 diets (n = 8). Pigs had free access to water and feed for a 28‐day period during which ADG and ADFI were calculated weekly. Thereafter, 1 pig/pen was killed to measure carcass and visceral organ weights. Overall, wcDDGS linearly decreased (p < 0.05) ADFI and ADG but had no effect on G:F (p > 0.10). The ADFI was 1.55, 1.45 and 1.36 kg/day for diets containing 0, 15 and 30% wcDDGS respectively; corresponding values for ADG were 0.79, 0.75 and 0.67 kg/day respectively. A linear decline (p = 0.01) in eviscerated hot carcass weight was observed as dietary wcDDGS increased. In Exp. 2, 18 pigs of average BW 20.4 ± 2.4 kg (mean ± SD) were individually housed in metabolism crates and fed the 3 diets (n = 6) at 550 kcal ME kg BW?0.60day for a 16‐day period followed by measurement of O2 consumption using an indirect calorimeter. Diet had no effect (p > 0.10) on whole‐body O2 consumption and HP. In conclusion, increasing wcDDGS content in growing pig diets linearly reduced ADFI, ADG and eviscerated hot carcass weight but had no effect on G:F, visceral organ weights or HP.  相似文献

The development of colonies of Cowdria ruminantium was studied in midgut epithelial cells of adult Amblyomma variegatum that had become infected by feeding as nymphs on cattle with experimentally induced heart-water disease. Colonies were not observed in gut tissues obtained from nymphs during the feeding period, but were present in midgut epithelial cells of ticks obtained at 15 days after they were replete through molting to the adult stage. Colonies were small (1 to 10 micron) initially, but as tick development progressed, their diameter increased to as much as 60 micron. With electron microscopy, colonies were observed to be membrane bound and contained pleomorphic organisms that were reticulated. The organisms seemed to be dividing by binary fission. Many colonies contained a large, electron-dense inclusion that was morphologically similar to hemoglobin deposits found in the cytoplasm of midgut epithelial cells of recently fed ticks. Cowdria ruminantium was often observed adhered to these inclusions.  相似文献

The effects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation products (YFP) on growth performance and gastrointestinal (GIT) microbial ecology in 90 weanling pigs orally challenged with Escherichia coli K88(+) (ETEC) were investigated. The YFP were an original YFP product (XPC) and a water-suspendable yeast fermentation prototype (WSYFP) from a commercial company. Treatments consisted of a negative control (NC, no in-feed or in-water additive), carbadox (AB, 55 mg of carbadox/kg of feed), XPC (in feed, 0.2%), and WSYFP (in water, 0.5, 1, or 2 g/pig per day), and each was allotted to 5 pens (3 pigs/pen). The diets met the 1998 NRC specifications. Pigs were acclimated to treatments for a 7-d period before an ETEC challenge. On d 8, blood was collected from pigs to determine the baseline packed cell volume (PCV) measurement, and pigs were orally challenged with ETEC. At various time points postchallenge, blood samples were taken, performance measures and fecal consistency scores were recorded, and gut digesta and tissue samples were taken to evaluate GIT morphology, microbial ecology, and metabolites. Preplanned contrasts were used for comparison. Pigs receiving YFP had greater ADFI than NC pigs on d 3 (424 vs. 378 g/d; P = 0.01) and d 7 (506 vs. 458 g/d; P = 0.03) postchallenge. This effect of YFP on ADFI was similar to that of AB on d 3, but pigs receiving AB ate more (576 vs. 506 g/d; P = 0.03) at d 7 than pigs receiving YFP. Pigs exhibited reduced (P < 0.001) PCV upon ETEC challenge; however, pigs receiving additives sustained a greater (P < 0.05) PCV at 72 h compared with the NC group. Compared with the NC pigs, pigs receiving YFP showed a smaller (P < 0.05) number of ileal mucosa adherent ETEC and prevalence of the order Enterobacteriales in the ileal digesta, which corresponded to less (5.09 vs. 6.97 mg/dL; P = 0.03) colonic ammonia on d 7 postchallenge. Most of the indices for ileal digesta bacterial richness and diversity were greater (P < 0.01) for YFP pigs compared with NC pigs. However, results also indicated that the influence of YFP on the piglet intestinal microenvironment might differ when given in feed or water during ETEC challenge. In conclusion, pigs receiving YFP showed a better appetite in the presence of ETEC, which, together with the greater ileal digesta bacteria richness and diversity and decreased ETEC adhering to the mucosa and reduced colonic ammonia, indicates a healthier GIT environment.  相似文献

Susceptibility to IVM (IVM) of “strain A” Haemonchus contortus which had been exposed to IVM four times over a 2-year period was compared to IVM susceptibility of “strain C” H. contortus which had no prior field exposure to IVM, by in vivo and in vitro methods. In vivo, the percentage reduction in faecal egg counts (FEC) and the total worm counts (TWC) were compared between control animals (lambs and kids) and animals treated with low dose IVM (20 μg/kg). In vitro susceptibility to IVM was evaluated by larval migration inhibition (LMI) after the two strains of H. contortus were exposed to different concentrations of IVM. The dose response, measured as the proportion of larvae inhibited from migrating, was used to estimate LD50. Although differences in response to IVM in the in vivo determinations were not significant, “strain A” H. contortus had a significantly higher LD50 than “strain C” in the LMI assay. Coincident with the conduct of the in vivo experiment, it was observed that “strain A” H. contortus established and survived better than “strain C” in the control lambs.  相似文献

Forty-two pigs in a herd of 117 displayed various clinical signs of progressive atrophic rhinitis. The main signs included sneezing, coughing, lachrymation, serous to mucopurulent nasal discharge, and nasal bleeding in 1 pig. Three pigs had lateral deviation of the snout, while 4 had brachygnathia superior with obvious deformation of the face. Four acutely affected weaner pigs appeared weak, while the 7 chronically-affected pigs appeared smaller than their apparently unaffected penmates of the same age. Treatment of the acutely affected pigs with long-acting oxytetracycline at 20 mg/kg body weight intramuscularly, repeated once after 7 days, reduced the severity but did not clear the sneezing from all the pigs. Fifteen pigs were slaughtered 2 months after the clinical diagnosis was made. The carcasses of the chronically affected pigs were about 15% lighter than those of the apparently normal pigs of the same age and from the same pen, which translated to a loss of 921.00 Kenya shillings per pig (US$13.7). Diagnosis of progressive atrophic rhinitis was confirmed by sectioning the snouts of randomly selected slaughtered pigs with obvious deformation of the snout. Sections were made at the level of the 1st/2nd upper premolar tooth. Varying degrees of turbinate atrophy, from mild to complete, were noted. Histopathology of the turbinates revealed metaplasia of nasal epithelium and fibrosis in the lamina propria.  相似文献

Vulture population declines have been noted in West and Southern Africa, but have not been assessed in East Africa. Roadside transects conducted in 1976 and 1988 were compared with surveys done from 2003–2005 in and around Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. Staggering declines in abundance were found for seven of eight scavenging raptors surveyed. No Egyptian vultures were seen during recent transects. We compared trends between the ungulate migration and non-migration season among three land use types (reserve, buffer, and grazed) and among the species surveyed to establish the causes of declines in scavenging raptors. Large declines during the ungulate migratory period suggest that most scavenging raptor species are declining well beyond the area of study. For all species, except Hooded vultures, substantial declines outside of the reserve indicate an important role of land use change in causing observed declines. In addition, significant declines of populations of Gyps species in the reserve itself, especially during the migration season, provide evidence that human activities occurring in other parts of the species’ range such as poisoning of carcasses may be causing their decline. Declines found in this study suggest that at a minimum African white-backed, Rüppell’s, and Hooded vultures should be relisted as Vulnerable. Management actions that limit land use change around the reserve combined with a countrywide ban on carbamate pesticides will be important for conserving keystone members of the scavenging guild. Future research should further examine possible causes of these declines and quantify the effect of reduced scavenging raptor abundance on scavenging efficiency.  相似文献

Phytophthora infestans, the pathogen responsible for causing late blight in potato and tomato, is a rapidly evolving and highly adaptable pathogen. Following the appearance of a new clonal genotype in Kenya (KE‐1 lineage) in 2007, there was a need to document possible displacement of the US‐1 genotype by the newer lineage. Samples from Kenya (260) collected on potato and from Uganda collected on potato (134) and tomato (32) were genotyped with simple sequence repeat (SSR) and mitochondrial DNA haplotype (mtDNA) markers. Results show that, four years after its discovery, the KE‐1 lineage has completely displaced the US‐1 lineage on potato in Kenya. The KE‐1 lineage has also migrated into Uganda through the eastern part of the country that borders western Kenya. All potato samples from eastern Uganda were of the KE‐1 lineage. Moreover, samples from eight fields in western Uganda were also of the KE‐1 lineage, which is in agreement with an ongoing westward displacement. However, the new lineage has not displaced the old lineage on tomato, as all samples from tomato were US‐1. Principal coordinate analysis (PCA) scatter plots revealed clustering that indicated separation between the lineages and also between the subpopulations of the US‐1 lineage on potato and tomato.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Studies were undertaken to establish the performance of a genetic algorithm-optimized solar tunnel dryer in drying of fish by comparing quality attributes of fish dried in the optimized solar tunnel dryer with that dried in a nonoptimized solar tunnel dryer and in open sun. A two-way analysis of variance revealed a highly significant difference between moisture ratios for the fish dried under the optimized solar tunnel dryer and the other methods (F = 53.59, Fcrit,1% = 4.09). In addition, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances showed that fish dried in the optimized dryer did not develop rancidity (2.30 µg MA/kg), that dried in nonoptimized dryer approached rancid values (5.3 µg MA/kg), while open sun dried fish was slightly rancid (7.95–8.45 µg MA/kg). Further, based on total volatile base nitrogen, fish under the three drying treatments did not develop significant putrefaction. Furthermore, it took 15, 22, and 28 h to dry fish to equilibrium moisture content of 0.12 kg/kg (dry basis), for the optimized and nonoptimized solar tunnel dryers and for the open sun drying, respectively. Thus, the optimized solar tunnel dryer is superior to both nonoptimized solar tunnel dryer and open sun drying in the drying of fish.  相似文献

传染性腹泻是儿童和仔猪中的主要难题。肠毒性大肠杆菌(ETEC)感染导致小肠中液体和电解质流失。试验旨在研究肠毒性大肠杆菌感染时,豆粕饲粮(SBM)和芸薹饲粮(CM)中非淀粉多糖(NSP)水解产物对液体和溶质净吸收的影响。通过混合糖酶培养豆粕饲粮和芸薹饲粮,产生非淀粉多糖水解产物。两饲粮培育后,离心浆体,在上清中添加无水乙醇可产生两种产品类型:80%乙醇可溶性豆粕产物(ES)和80%乙醇不溶性芸薹产物(EI)。在两个独立试验中研究豆粕饲粮产物(ES)和芸薹饲粮产物(EI),试验设两因素:产品类型(EI,ES)和肠毒性大肠杆菌感染时间(灌注前、后)。取成对的小肠段,一段为非感染,另一段被肠毒性大肠杆菌感染;用两种产品同时灌注小肠肠段7.5h。测定液体和溶质的净吸收。在两个试验中,与SBM和CM产物相比,灌注对照物(盐)的ETEC感染肠段对液体和溶质的净吸收更低(P≤0.05)。对SBM产物而言,产品类型和感染时间对液体吸收的交互作用显著(P≤0.05);与灌注前ETEC感染相比,感染前灌注ES产品液体吸收更高,灌注前感染和感染前灌注对液体的吸收分别为(428±34),(735±22)μL·cm^-2结论:豆粕饲粮和芸薹饲粮非淀粉多糖水解产物,尤其是来源于豆粕饲粮的ES,对维持ETEC感染期液体平衡有益,可见其具有控制ETEC诱导仔猪腹泻的潜能。  相似文献
