The effect of D‐mannitol as an indigestible sugar on apparent digestibility of nutrients, nitrogen (N) utilization and growth performance, have been investigated in growing rabbits fed a urea‐containing diet. In experiment 1, 40‐day‐old male rabbits were fed a commercial diet with urea 10 g/kg with added glucose or D‐mannitol 60 g/kg each. Thereafter, in experiment 2 the rabbits aged 55 days were fed a commercial diet with or without urea 10 g/kg. Feed restriction at 55 g/kg0.75/day was carried out in both experiments. Addition of D‐mannitol to the urea‐containing diet decreased urinary N excretion, which consequently increased N retention and ratios of retained N to consumed N or apparently absorbed N. Addition of urea alone to the diet increased daily N intake and urinary N excretion but did not affect N retention. Weight gain and feed efficiency were improved by D‐mannitol feeding, whereas feeding with urea alone did not affect these parameters. Utilization of dietary urea was enhanced in growing rabbits fed the urea‐containing diet with D‐mannitol, resulting in improvement of N retention and growth performance.  相似文献

Four experiments were conducted to estimate dietary lysine (Lys) requirements using plasma amino acid concentrations as a criterion in mature thoroughbreds. In each experiment four adult thoroughbreds were used. The changes in plasma Lys concentration after feeding were observed in Experiment 1. Blood samples were taken from the cervix vein 0.5 h before, and 1, 3, 5.5, and 10 h after feeding. The plasma Lys concentration increased and remained constant until 3 h after feeding, decreased until 5.5 h and remained constant after then. Therefore, the bleed was done at 3 h after feeding in all later experiments. To make sure of the response speed of the plasma Lys to changes of dietary Lys levels, dietary Lys levels were changed from high to low, and low to high levels in Experiment 2. Blood samples were taken just on the changing day and 1, 2 and 3 days after changing diets. The plasma Lys concentration decreased until 2 days after changing the diet, and then remained constant with advancing days after changing the diet from high Lys to low Lys. On the other hand, the plasma Lys increased until one day after changing the diet, and then remained constant with advancing days after changing dietary Lys levels. Thus, blood samples were taken 3 days after feeding in the next experiments. The possibility of estimating the Lys requirement for maintenance using plasma Lys concentration was elucidated by two methods in Experiments 3 and 4. In Experiment 3, the horses were fed a diet containing 0.33 percent Lys for 3 days. After this the diet was changed to diets containing higher levels of Lys to 0.40, 0.47, 0.54, and 0.61 percent every third day. The Lys requirement was estimated to be 0.46 percent of diet from the response of plasma Lys concentration of five Lys levels. In Experiment 4, a 4 × 4 Latin square design was used for four dietary Lys levels. The Lys requirement was estimated to be 0.47 percent of the diet with a plasma Lys concentration of four Lys levels.  相似文献

The antibody response in horses inoculated with 2 doses of a live equine herpesvirus type 1 vaccine with different vaccination intervals (1 to 3 months) was evaluated with regard to the persistence of virus-neutralizing (VN) antibodies. The durations for which the geometric mean VN titers were maintained significantly higher than those before the first vaccination (P<0.05) were up to 5 months in horses that received the vaccination with a 1-month interval (n=17) and 7 months for those that received it with a 2-month (n=17) or 3-month interval (n=14 or 17). The vaccination program with the 2-month interval was the most effective in maintaining VN antibodies for a long duration with the smallest gap of antibody decline between the first and second vaccinations.  相似文献

In Japan, care for the elderly has been a serious social issue. The relationship between dog ownership and health of the elderly has attracted considerable attention, but it is still unclear whether dog ownership affects the health of owners. In this study, we focused on the experiences of dog ownership in the past. The questionnaire survey was conducted targeting elderly Japanese men and asking them to clarify whether the experience of dog ownership in the past influences their current mental and physical health. To examine the characteristics of the experience of dog ownership, we divided past dog owners by a hierarchical cluster analysis using the variables related to the experiences of dog ownership. We added the ‘never owned a dog’ group to the three groups that were provided by the cluster analysis, and conducted analysis of variance and multiple linear regression analysis using the variables of physical and mental health. The results showed that the group that owned their first dog at an early age and owned more dogs later scored higher in the companionship and social support scales. These results suggested that the experiences of dog ownership in childhood were related to the sociality of older men, such as the enhancement of their companionship with others.  相似文献
