Objective evaluation of the global impact of fisheries on ocean ecosystems may be hampered by various biases suggesting natural variability of exploited species to be stronger and more widespread than is really the case. One of these is reporting biases: papers are usually not published which show that nothing has changed. Another such bias is that much variability is fishery-induced, i.e. due to the truncation by fishing of the age composition of exploited populations. A third source of bias, emphasized here, is that resulting from sampling a migrating population with a fixed device. This bias is illustrated by contrasting the relatively stable echo-acoustic estimates of biomass of Sardinella spp. along the north-west African coast, i.e. from Morocco and Mauritania to Senegal (data from 1992–98), with the more variable estimates of biomass in the waters of each of these countries. We conclude that published reports of 'variability' in exploited species should explicitly account for the effect of migrations and other movements, especially when such reports are to be used for contrasting fisheries-induced with environmental impacts on biomass.  相似文献

The availability of food for larvae of the Japanese sardine, Sardinops melanostictus , was investigated in the Kuroshio frontal region and the waters on the offshore side of the Kuroshio, the Pacific coast of central Japan, in March 1990 and 1991, respectively. Food availability was assessed by changes in biomass and production of nauplii and small copepods, and RNA/DNA ratios of the larvae during about 2.5 days (the frontal region) or 3 days (the offshore waters) of tracking a drifter released in a pitch of the larvae. The biomas of the nauplii tended to increase with time in the frontal region and to decrease in the waters on the offshore side of the Kuroshio during the drifter tracking periods. The production of small copepods including nauplii in the waters on the offshore de of the kuroshio was 14% of that in the frontal region. The sum of the mean food requirements of the carnivorous macrozooplankters and sardine larvae was 11% of the production of small copepods including nauplii in the frontal region, compared with 136% in the waters offshore of the Kuroshio. The RNA/DNA ratios of postlarvae smaller than 8 mm in the frontal reqion were significantly higher than those in the waters on the offshore side of the Kuroshio ( P < 0.001) It is considered that the food availability for sardine larvae was relatively high in the frontal region and low in the waters on the offshore side of the Kuroshio. The food availability for the larvae probably deteriorated with the offshore shift of the main spawning ground from the frontal region to the waters on the offshore side of the Kuroshio in the latter half of the 1980s.  相似文献

Modelling the vertical distribution of fish eggs is important when assessing fish stocks with egg production methods and for monitoring the reproductive potential of fish populations. Fish eggs are passive particles and their vertical distribution is determined by a few parameters such as egg density, egg diameter, wind‐ and tide‐induced turbulence, and vertical hydrographic structure. A one‐dimensional vertical biophysical, numerical model was developed which was adapted to the hydrography of shelf seas under the influence of tidal currents, wind‐induced circulation, and river discharges. The biological part of the model parameterized the ascent velocity of the egg as a function of egg properties (diameter, density) and water properties (density, viscosity, turbulence). The model contains a turbulence closure which makes the model dynamic. The model parameters were surface wind, tidal currents, T‐S profile, and egg diameter and density, which were kept constant in time. The model has the capacity to generate sub‐surface egg maxima in different hydrographic conditions, e.g. in areas under the influence of river plumes, and can also homogenize the egg distribution under wind and tide forcing. Sensitivity tests were carried out to study the response of the model to variations in the model parameters for a variety of hydrographic conditions. The modelled egg vertical distributions were validated by comparison of the model results with egg distributions sampled in the field. The analysis highlighted variability in fish egg density of anchovy, sardine, and sprat across years and areas, with a potential link between egg density and surface sea water density. The validated model is a tool for the analysis of shelf seas fish egg vertical distributions.  相似文献

In the present study, a modelling experiment is conducted to simulate the transport of sardine (Sardinops sagax) eggs and larvae in the Northern Benguela. Based on historical and newly obtained data, different scenarios of vertical and horizontal distribution are applied and the effects on retention are discussed. The simulations showed that vertical and horizontal distribution were important for retention of sardine larvae in the Northern Benguela. By using age‐dependent data on vertical distribution, it was shown that retention of particles in the simulation was substantially enhanced compared with a scenario where particles were distributed in the offshore moving Ekman layer. Retention was lowest during October–December (when upwelling intensity is high) and highest during February–April (when upwelling intensity is somewhat lower). When different spawning areas were considered, highest retention was observed in an area near Walvis Bay. It is concluded that the behaviour of sardine larvae is adapted to the circulation system in the Northern Benguela in a way that promotes retention of the larvae in inshore nursery areas.  相似文献

We have numerically modeled the advection and diffusion of sardine eggs and larvae to investigate the larval transport processes of Japanese sardine from the spawning grounds by the Kuroshio.
The results indicated that the offshore drift current induced by the winter monsoon and the location of the spawning ground have significant effects on the survival of the Japanese sardine. The contribution of the drift current, the distance of the spawning ground from the Kuroshio axis, and the eddy diffusivity to the larval retention in the coastal area is approximately expressed by the following equation: where R is the retention rate in the coastal area, a the variance of initial distribution of eggs, T the time after the eggs were spawned, – V0 the velocity of the wind-induced offshore current, y0 the distance of the center of the spawning area from the Kuroshio axis, and K the coefficient of horizontal eddy diffusivity.
The year-to-year variation in larval survival rates stimulated by the two-dimensional model are consistent with those estimated previously by using field data of egg and larval abundance during 1978–1988.  相似文献

The effectiveness of milk protein concentrate (MPC) and caffeic acid in controlling lipid oxidation and texture changes in 6-month frozen stored sardine mince was investigated using two different concentrations of caffeic acid (200 and 400 ppm) with and without MPC (4%). The extent of lipid oxidation was monitored by measuring thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) while changes in the texture of mince due to frozen storage were assessed using Texture Analyzer (TA.XT Plus) and sensory analysis. Cooking loss upon frozen storage was also determined. The addition of MPC and/or caffeic acid significantly reduced lipid oxidation throughout the storage period. However, neither added benefit nor synergistic effect in retarding lipid oxidation was shown by caffeic acid. MPC not only retarded lipid oxidation but also moderated texture hardening, cooking loss, and moistness during frozen storage. No improvement by caffeic acid alone and no significant differences in sensory firmness and moistness between MPC-added mince with and without caffeic acid indicate that caffeic acid did not play any role in texture and moisture control. This study suggests that lipid oxidation and texture of frozen sardine mince can be better controlled by using MPC alone.  相似文献

A six‐week growth trial was performed to estimate the dietary protein requirements for maximum growth of juvenile Brazilian sardine (Sardinella brasiliensis) based on growth performance, feed utilization, body composition and digestive enzyme activity. Six isoenergetic diets were formulated to contain protein levels that increased from 250 to 500 g/kg. Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate groups of 160 fish with mean initial body weight of 0.93 ± 0.13 g, which were fed four times a day to apparent satiation. Growth tended to increase with the increase in the dietary protein level up to 400 g/kg. Total protein intake was indirectly correlated to apparent protein utilization. No significant differences in whole‐body composition were found between fish fed the different protein levels. Acid protease and neutral lipase activities did not show significant differences among the different protein dietary groups. Alkaline protease activity increased in fish fed up to 350 g/kg of protein and amylase activity in fish fed up to 400 g/kg. Using polynomial regression, 367 g/kg was estimated to be the optimum dietary protein requirement for maximum weight gain of juvenile Brazilian sardines.  相似文献

Fish express two different chitinases, acidic fish chitinase-1 (AFCase-1) and acidic fish chitinase-2 (AFCase-2), in the stomach. AFCase-1 and AFCase-2 have different degradation patterns, as fish efficiently degrade chitin ingested as food. For a comparison with the enzymatic properties and the primary structures of chitinase isozymes obtained previously from the stomach of demersal fish, in this study, we purified chitinase isozymes from the stomach of Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus, a surface fish that feeds on plankton, characterized the properties of these isozymes, and cloned the cDNAs encoding chitinases. We also predicted 3D structure models using the primary structures of S. melanostictus stomach chitinases. Two chitinase isozymes, SmeChiA (45 kDa) and SmeChiB (56 kDa), were purified from the stomach of S. melanostictus. Moreover, two cDNAs, SmeChi-1 encoding SmeChiA, and SmeChi-2 encoding SmeChiB were cloned. The linker regions of the deduced amino acid sequences of SmeChi-1 and SmeChi-2 (SmeChi-1 and SmeChi-2) are the longest among the fish stomach chitinases. In the cleavage pattern groups toward short substrates and the phylogenetic tree analysis, SmeChi-1 and SmeChi-2 were classified into AFCase-1 and AFCase-2, respectively. SmeChi-1 and SmeChi-2 had catalytic domains that consisted of a TIM-barrel (β/α)8–fold structure and a deep substrate-binding cleft. This is the first study showing the 3D structure models of fish stomach chitinases.  相似文献
