Changes in fish year‐class strength have been attributed to year‐to‐year variability in environmental conditions and spawning stock biomass (SSB). In particular, sea temperature has been shown to be linked to fish recruitment. In the present study, I examined the relationship between sea surface temperature (SST), SSB and recruitment for two stocks of walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) around northern Japan [Japanese Pacific stock (JPS) and northern Japan Sea stock (JSS)] using a temperature‐dependent stock‐recruitment model (TDSRM). The recruitment fluctuation of JPS was successfully reproduced by the TDSRM with February and April SSTs, and February SST was a better environmental predictor than April SST. In addition, the JPS recruitment was positively related to February SST and negatively to April SST. The JSS recruitment modeled by the TDSRM incorporating February SST was also consistent with the observation, whereas the relationship between recruitment and February SST was negative, that is the opposite trend to JPS. These findings suggest that SST in February is important as a predictor of recruitment for both stocks, and that higher and lower SSTs in February act favorably on the recruitment of JPS and JSS respectively. Furthermore, Ricker‐type TDSRM was not selected for either of the stocks, suggesting that the strong density‐dependent effect as in the Ricker model does not exist for JPS and JSS. I formulate hypotheses to explain the links between SST and recruitment, and note that these relationships should be considered in any future attempts to understand the recruitment dynamics of JPS and JSS.  相似文献

A study of common minke and Bryde's whales was conducted in the western North Pacific in the 2000 and 2001 summer seasons to estimate prey selection of cetaceans as this is an important parameter in ecosystem models. Whale sighting and sampling surveys and prey surveys using quantitative echosounder and mid‐water trawl were carried out concurrently in the study. Biomasses of Japanese anchovy, walleye pollock and krill, which were major prey species of common minke and Bryde's whales, were estimated using an echosounder. The results suggested that common minke whale showed prey selection for Japanese anchovy while they seemed to avoid krill in both the offshore and coastal regions and walleye pollock in the continental shelf region. Selection for shoaling pelagic fish was similar to that in the eastern North Atlantic. Bryde's whale showed selection for Japanese anchovy in August 2000 and July 2001, while it showed prey selection for krill in May and June in 2001.  相似文献

Walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma (pollock hereafter) is a key ecological and economic species in the eastern Bering Sea, yet detailed synthesis of the spatial and temporal patterns of pollock ichthyoplankton in this important region is lacking. This knowledge gap is particularly severe considering that egg and larval distribution are essential to reconstructing spawning locations and early life stages drift pathways. We used 19 yr of ichthyoplankton collections to determine the spatial and temporal patterns of egg and larval distribution. Generalized additive models (GAMs) identified two primary temporal pulses of pollock eggs, the first occurring from 20 February to 31 March and the second from 20 April to 20 May; larvae showed similar, but slightly lagged, pulses. Based on generalized cross‐validation and information theory, a GAM model that allowed for different seasonal patterns in egg density within three unique areas outperformed a GAM that assumed a single fixed seasonal pattern across the entire eastern Bering Sea. This ‘area‐dependent’ GAM predicted the highest densities of eggs (i.e., potential spawning locations) in three major areas of the eastern Bering Sea: near Bogoslof Island (February–April), north of Unimak Island and the Alaska Peninsula (March–April), and around the Pribilof Islands (April–August). Unique temporal patterns of egg density were observed for each area, suggesting that pollock spawning may be more spatially and temporally complex than previously assumed. Moreover, this work provides a valuable baseline of pollock spawning to which future changes, such as those resulting from climate variability, may be compared.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Purified trimethylamine- N -oxide demethylase (TMAOase)from walleye pollack muscle is a thermostable protein that was notinactivated after heating at 80°C for 30 min.The heated enzyme was electrophoresed in the same manner as fornative enzyme. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra for purified enzymechanged reversibly in the temperature range of 10–80°C.As the enzyme was still active at 80°C, the CD spectralchange did not directly relate to enzyme activity. TMAOase activity inthe myofibrillar fraction decreased sharply above 30°C,but was extracted and recovered from the heated myofibrillar fraction,suggesting that the activity seemed to be interrupted and apparently inactivateddue to the thermal alteration of myofibrillar proteins or some unknownfactors. The complicated profile found in dimethylamine (DMA) formationfrom trimethylamine- N -oxide (TMAO) in walleye pollack muscleduring heating consisted of both enzymic and non-enzymic processes.Most DMA was produced enzymatically below 40°C and interruptedabove 40°C. Therefore, DMA and trimethylamine was formednon-enzymatically at high temperatures regardless of the presenceof native enzyme. A new, simple and easy purification method wasproposed based on the thermostable nature of the enzyme.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of four biofilter volume (BFV)/culture tank volume ratios (0.67/1, 1.00/1, 1.50/1, and 2.25/1) on biofilter function were examined in a recirculating fish/vegetable production system in a greenhouse. Sand beds served as biofilters, as substrate for vegetable growth, and as location for decomposition of waste solids. No fertilizer was used. Three experiments were conducted over the course of one year. In Experiment 1, as the BF V/tank volume ratio increased, total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN) and nitrite concentrations decreased (9.0 to 3.6 mg/L and 0.39 to 0.20 mg/L, respectively), and biomass increase over the culture period and oxygen levels increased significantly (13.34 to 16.03 kg/m3 and 6.03 to 6.47 mg/L, respectively). pH was maintained at 5.8-6.2 without the addition of lime. Yield per plant of the tomato variety ‘Laura’ tended to decrease (3.4 to 2.3 kg/plant), and yield per plot increased (13.6 to 31.6 kg/plant) with increasing BFV/tank ratio. In Experiment 2, the system was operated for 42 days without plants. pH dropped rapidly to near 4.0. Cucumbers were then planted, and weekly additions of lime and CaO were made. Significantly less CaO was required to achieve target pH in systems with the largest BFV/tank ratios. pH levels conducive to good plant growth were only slowly stabilized, and cucumber yields were erratic. TAN and nitrite levels were not measured, but fish grew well (5.2 to 7.2 kg/m3 with increasing BFV/tank ratio). By Experiment 3, with the tomato variety ‘Kewalo,’ TAN and nitrite concentrations decreased from 0.96 to 0.48 mg/L and from 0.06 to 0.02 mg/L, respectively, with increasing BFV/tank ratio, and in the latter part of the experiment, pH was stabilized at 6.3-6.5 without lime. Yield/plant decreased from 5.0 to 2.4 kg/plant and yield per plot increased from 19.9 to 33.1 kg/plot with increasing BFV/tank ratio. Daily water exchanges averaged 2.8%. Nutrient concentrations of the irrigation water after a year's operation were low overall. Although plants showed no deficiency or toxicity symptoms, K+ was found to be low and Zn++ high relative to other ions. No clogging was observed in the sand beds. Carbon measurements ± SEM of the sand medium at the wastewater inlet of the smallest and largest BFV/tank ratio systems were 0.23 ±0.03%, and 0.15 ±0.01%, respectively. Nitrogen was below detectable levels (<0.04%). The enhanced biofil-ter/culture tank ratios used here resulted in a functionally well balanced fish/vegetable co-culture system. While needing refinement, this design represents a step towards a highly productive, low-tech system with efficient use of water, chemical, and labor resources.  相似文献

Understanding the environmental factors that regulate fish recruitment is essential for effective management of fisheries. Generally, first‐year survival, and therefore recruitment, is inherently less consistent in systems with high intra‐ and interannual variability. Irrigation reservoirs display sporadic patterns of annual drawdown, which can pose a substantial challenge to recruitment of fishes. We developed species‐specific models using an 18‐year data set compiled from state and federal agencies to investigate variables that regulate the recruitment of walleye Sander vitreus and white bass Morone chrysops in irrigation reservoirs in south‐west Nebraska, USA. The candidate model set for walleye included only abiotic variables (water‐level elevation, minimum daily air temperature during winter prior to hatching, annual precipitation, spring warming rate and May reservoir discharge), and the candidate model set for white bass included primarily biotic variables (catch per unit effort (CPUE) of black crappie Pomoxis nigromaculatus, CPUE of age‐0 walleye, CPUE of bluegill Lepomis macrochirus and CPUE of age‐3 and older white bass), each of which had a greater relative importance than the single abiotic variable (minimum daily air temperature during winter after hatching). Our findings improve the understanding of the recruitment of fishes in irrigation reservoirs and the relative roles of abiotic and biotic factors.  相似文献

对鲤鱼 (Cyprinuscarpio)、黄 鱼桑鱼 (Pseudobaqrusfulvidraco)、大眼 鱼师鲈 (Stizostedionvitreum)各消化器官消化酶进行了测定分析。结果表明 :鲤鱼肝胰脏蛋白酶活性最强 ,黄鱼桑鱼和大眼鱼师鲈胃中蛋白酶活性最强 ,3种鱼蛋白酶活性顺序为 :大眼鱼师鲈 >黄鱼桑鱼 >鲤鱼 ,表明食性不同 ,摄食能力不同 ,蛋白酶活性也不同 ;3种鱼淀粉酶的活性顺序为 :鲤鱼 >黄鱼桑鱼 >大眼鱼师鲈 ,其酶活性与鱼类的食性有关 ;消化酶在肠道分布 ,无固定规律 ,而是因鱼而异  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   In order to elucidate the mechanism of the changes in gel forming characteristics of fish meat by pH-lowering, the gelation-temperature curve and the gelation-moisture content curve were examined using the acidified walleye pollack surimi or neutralized one after acidification. In the gelation-temperature curve, the gel strength was highest at 30°C and lowest at approximately 50–60°C, irrespective of pH shifting. The gel strength at 30°C and 80°C decreased with the decrease in pH value. The neutralization of acidified surimi improved the gel strength, but it was considerably lower than the original gel strength. The gel strength at 50–60°C was not affected by pH lowering. The gel strength at 80°C could not be revived to the original by pH readjustment, either in the presence or in the absence of EDTA. These results suggest that irreversible changes of meat protein take place under the low pH, and the oxidation ability of sulfhydryl (SH) groups of protein molecule is not affected by pH-shifting.  相似文献
