Emission of N2O from rye grass (Lolium perenne L.)
The possibility of an additional N2O emission pathway via plants was investigated in a soil-rye-grass (Lolium perenne L.) system. The N2O emission rate of the system varied between 0.8 and 13.3 mg N2O-N m–2 day–1. Comparing the N2O emission rate of the system before and immediately after cutting the rye grass allowed us to calculate the contribution of the rye grass to the N2O emission from the soil-plant system. It was found that, depending on the type of fertilization and the growing period of the plants, the N2O released from the rye grass varied between 0 and 2.8 mg N2O-N m–2 day–1. N 2 O emission mediated by the rye grass increased towards the end of the growing period. An exponential correlation [R2=0.93, y=(8×10–6x 2 )–(2×10–5x)+0.21] was observed between the N2O emission (y) from the rye grass and its NO3 –N content (x). However, it was not clear whether N2O was produced by the plants themselves or whether the rye grass served as a conduit for N2O produced in the soil.

The effect of reduced tillage (RT) on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions of soils from fields with root crops under a temperate climate was studied. Three silt loam fields under RT agriculture were compared with their respective conventional tillage (CT) field with comparable crop rotation and manure application. Undisturbed soil samples taken in September 2005 and February 2006 were incubated under laboratory conditions for 10 days. The N2O emission of soils taken in September 2005 varied from 50 to 1,095 μg N kg−1 dry soil. The N2O emissions of soils from the RT fields taken in September 2005 were statistically (P < 0.05) higher or comparable than the N2O emissions from their respective CT soil. The N2O emission of soils taken in February 2006 varied from 0 to 233 μg N kg−1 dry soil. The N2O emissions of soils from the RT fields taken in February 2006 tended to be higher than the N2O emissions from their respective CT soil. A positive and significant Pearson correlation of the N2O–N emissions with nitrate nitrogen (NO3 –N) content in the soil was found (P < 0.01). Leaving the straw on the field, a typical feature of RT, decreased NO3 –N content of the soil and reduced N2O emissions from RT soils.

N2O emissions were periodically measured using the static chamber method over a 1-year period in a cultivated field subjected to different agricultural practices including the type of N fertilizer (NH4NO3, (NH4)2SO4, CO(NH2)2 or KNO3 and the type of crop (rapeseed and winter wheat). N2O emissions exhibited the same seasonal pattern whatever the treatment, with emissions between 1.5 and 15 g N ha–1 day–1 during the autumn, 16–56 g N ha–1 day–1 in winter after a lengthy period of freezing, 0.5–70 g N ha–1 day–1 during the spring and lower emissions during the summer. The type of crop had little impact on the level of N2O emission. These emissions were a little higher under wheat during the autumn in relation to an higher soil NO3 content, but the level of emissions was similar over a 7-month period (2163 and 2093 g N ha–1 for rape and wheat, respectively). The form of N fertilizer affected N2O emissions during the month following fertilizer application, with higher emissions in the case of NH4NO3 and (NH4)2SO4, and a different temporal pattern of emissions after CO(NH2)2 application. The proportion of applied N lost as N2O varied from 0.42% to 0.55% with the form of N applied, suggesting that controlling this agricultural factor would not be an efficient way of limiting N2O emissions under certain climatic and pedological situations.  In order to determine the effects of increased soil temperature resulting from global warming on microbiological reactions, a 21-month field experiment was carried out in the Bavarian tertiary hills. The major objective was to focus on N2O releases as either a positive or negative feedback in response to global warming. The soils of a fallow field and a wheat field were heated 3  °C above ambient temperature and N2O fluxes were measured weekly from June 1994 to March 1996. During the experimental period, measured temperature differences between the control plots and the heated plots were 2.9±0.3  °C at a depth of 0.01 m and 1.0–1.8  °C at a depth of 1 m. Soil moisture decreased with the elevated soil temperatures of the heated plots. The mean differences in soil moisture between the treatments were 6.4% (fallow field) and 5.2%DW (wheat field dry weight, DW), respectively. Overall N2O releases during the experimental period from the fallow field were 4.8 kg N2O–N ha–1 in the control plot against 5.0 kg N2O–N ha–1 in the heated plot, and releases from the wheat field were 8.0 N2O–N ha–1 in the control plot and 7.6 N2O–N kg ha–1 in the heated plot. However, on a seasonal basis, cumulated N2O emissions differed between the plots. During the summer months (May–October), releases from the heated fallow plot were 3 times the rates from the control plot. In the winter months, N2O releases increased in both the fallow and wheat fields and were related to the number of freezing and thawing cycles.

N2 fixation by leguminous crops is a relatively low-cost alternative to N fertilizer for small-holder farmers in developing countries. N2 fixation in faba bean (Vicia faba L.) as affected by P fertilization (0 and 20 kg P ha–1) and inoculation (uninoculated and inoculated) with Rhizobium leguminosarium biovar viciae (strain S-18) was studied using the 15N isotope dilution method in the southeastern Ethiopian highlands at three sites differing in soil conditions and length of growing period. Nodulation at the late flowering stage was significantly influenced by P and inoculation only at the location exhibiting the lowest soil P and pH levels. The percentage of N derived from the atmosphere ranged from 66 to 74%, 58 to 74% and 62 to 73% with a corresponding total amount of N2 fixed ranging from 169 to 210 kg N ha–1, 139 to 184 kg N ha–1 and 147 to 174 kg N ha–1 at Bekoji, Kulumsa and Asasa, respectively. The total N2 fixed was not significantly affected by P fertilizer or inoculation across all locations, and there was no interaction between the factors. However, at all three locations, N2 fixation was highly positively correlated with the dry matter production and total N yield of faba bean. Soil N balances after faba bean were positive (12–58 kg N ha–1) relative to the highly negative N balances (–9–44 kg N ha–1) following wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), highlighting the importance of rotation with faba bean in the cereal-based cropping systems of Ethiopia. Denitrification plays an important role in N-cycling. However, information on the rates of denitrification from horticultural growing media is rare in literature. In this study, the effects of pH, N, C, and moisture contents on denitrification were investigated using four moderately decomposed peat types (oligotrophic, mesotrophic, eutrophic, and transitional). Basal and potential denitrification rates (20°C, 18 h) from the unlimed peat samples varied widely from 2.0 to 21.8 and from 118.9 to 306.6 μg (N2O + N2)–N L−1 dry peat h−1, respectively, with the highest rates from the eutrophic peat and the lowest from the transitional one. Both basal and potential denitrification rates were substantially increased by 3.6–14- and 1.4–2.3-fold, respectively, when the initial pH (4.3–4.8) was raised to 5.9–6.5 units. Emissions of (N2O + N2)–N from oligotrophic, mesotrophic, and transitional peats were markedly increased by the addition of 0.15 g NO3–N L−1 dry peat but further additions had no effect. Denitrification rates were increased by increasing glucose concentration suggesting that the activity of denitrifiers in all peat types was limited by the low availability of easily decomposable C source. Increasing moisture contents of all peats from 40 to 50% water-filled pore space (WFPS) did not significantly (p > 0.05) increase (N2O + N2)–N emissions. However, a positive effect was observed when the moisture contents were increased from 60% to 70% WFPS in the eutrophic peat, from 70% to 80% in the transitional, from 80% to 90% in the oligotrophic and from 70% to 90% in the mesotrophic peat. It can be concluded that liming, N-fertilization, availability of easily decomposable C, and moist condition above 60% WFPS could encourage denitrification from peats although the rates are greatly influenced by the peat-forming environments (eutrophic > mesotrophic > oligotrophic > transitional types).

Impacts of biochar addition on nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from paddy soils are not well documented. Here, we have hypothesized that N2O emissions from paddy soils could be depressed by biochar incorporation during the upland crop season without any effect on CO2 emissions. Therefore, we have carried out the 60-day aerobic incubation experiment to investigate the influences of rice husk biochar incorporation (50 t ha−1) into two typical paddy soils with or without nitrogen (N) fertilizer on N2O and CO2 evolution from soil. Biochar addition significantly decreased N2O emissions during the 60-day period by 73.1% as an average value while the inhibition ranged from 51.4% to 93.5% (P < 0.05–0.01) in terms of cumulative emissions. Significant interactions were observed between biochar, N fertilizer, and soil type indicating that the effect of biochar addition on N2O emissions was influenced by soil type. Moreover, biochar addition did not increase CO2 emissions from both paddy soils (P > 0.05) in terms of cumulative emissions. Therefore, biochar can be added to paddy fields during the upland crop growing season to mitigate N2O evolution and thus global warming.

The impacts of fallow on soil fertility, crop production and climate-forcing gas emissions were determined in two contrasting legumes, Gliricidia sepium and Acacia colei, in comparison with traditional unamended fallow and continuous cultivation systems. After 2 years, the amount of foliar material produced did not differ between the two improved fallow species; however, grain yield was significantly elevated by 55% in the first and second cropping season after G. sepium compared with traditional fallow. By contrast, relative to the unamended fallow, a drop in grain yield was observed in the first cropping season after A. colei, followed by no improvement in the second. G. sepium had higher foliar N, K and Mg, while A. colei had lower foliar N but higher lignin and polyphenols. In the third year after fallow improvement, a simulated rainfall experiment was performed on soils to compare efflux of N2O and CO2. Improved fallow effects on soil nutrient composition and microbial activity were demonstrated through elevated N2O and CO2 efflux from soils in G. sepium fallows compared with other treatments. N2O emissions were around six times higher from this nitrogen-fixing soil treatment, evolving 69.9 ngN2O–N g−1soil h−1 after a simulated rainfall event, compared with only 8.5 and 4.8 ngN2O–N g−1soil h−1 from soil under traditional fallow and continuous cultivation, respectively. The findings indicate that selection of improved fallows for short-term fertility enhancement has implications for regional N2O emissions for dry land regions.

Pot and field experiments were conducted to determine microbial immobilization of N fertilizer during growth periods of winter wheat and winter barley. In a pot experiment with winter wheat, Ca(15NO3)2 was applied at tillering [Zadok's growth stage (GS) 25)], stem elongation (GS 31) and ear emergence (GS 49). Rates of 100 mg N pot–1, 200 mg N pot–1 or 300 mg N pot–1 were applied at each N application date. At crop maturity, 15N-labelled fertilizer N immobilization was highest at the highest N rate (3×300 mg N pot–1). For each N-rate treatment about 50% of the total immobilized fertilizer N was immobilized from the first N dressing, and 30% and 20% of the total 15N immobilized was derived from the second and third applications, respectively. In field trials with winter wheat (three sites) and winter barley (one site) N was applied at the same growth stages as for the pot trial. N was also applied to fallow plots, but only at GS 25. N which was not recovered (neither in crops nor in soil mineral N pools) was considered to represent net immobilized N. A clear effect of N rate (51–255 kg N ha–1) on net N immobilization was not found. The highest net N immobilization was found for the period between GS 25 (March) and GS 31 (late April) which amounted to 54–97% of the total net N immobilized at harvest (July/August). At GS 31, non-recovered N was found to be of similar magnitude for cropped and fallow plots, indicating that C from roots did not affect net N immobilization. Microbial biomass N (Nmic) was determined for cropped plots at GS 31. Although Nmic tended to be higher in fertilized than in unfertilized plots, fertilizer-induced increases in Nmic and net N immobilization were poorly correlated. It can be concluded that microbial immobilization of fertilizer N is particularly high after the first N application when crop growth and N uptake are low.

Crop residues with high C/N ratio immobilize N released during decomposition in soil, thus reducing N losses through leaching, denitrification, and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission. A laboratory incubation experiment was conducted for 84 days under controlled conditions (24°C and moisture content 55% of water-holding capacity) to study the influence of sugarcane, maize, sorghum, cotton and lucerne residues, and mineral N addition, on N mineralization–immobilization and N2O emission. Residues were added at the rate of 3 t C ha−1 to soil with, and without, 150 kg urea N ha−1. The addition of sugarcane, maize, and sorghum residues without N fertilizer resulted in a significant immobilization of soil N. Amended soil had significantly (P < 0.05) lower NO3–N, which reached minimum values of 2.8 mg N kg−1 for sugarcane (at day 28), 10.3 mg N kg−1 for maize (day 7), and 5.9 mg N kg−1 for sorghum (day 7), compared to 22.7 mg N kg−1 for the unamended soil (day 7). During 84 days of incubation, the total mineral N in the residues + N treatments were decreased by 45 mg N kg−1 in sugarcane, 34 mg kg−1 in maize, 29 mg kg−1 in sorghum, and 16 mg kg−1 in cotton amended soil compared to soil + N fertilizer, although soil NO3–N increased by 7 mg kg−1 in lucerne amended soil. The addition of residues also significantly increased amended soil microbial biomass C and N. Maximum emissions of N2O from crop residue amended soils occurred in the first 4–5 days of incubation. Overall, after 84 days of incubation, the cumulative N2O emission was 25% lower with cotton + N fertilizer, compared to soil + N fertilizer. The cumulative N2O emission was significantly and positively correlated with NO3–N (r = 0.92, P < 0.01) and total mineral N (r = 0.93, P < 0.01) after 84 days of incubation, and had a weak but significant positive correlation with cumulative CO2 in the first 3 and 5 days of incubation (r = 0.59, P < 0.05).

Soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen as affected by cropping systems
The impacts of crop rotations and N fertilization on microbial biomass C (Cmic) and N (Nmic) were studied in soils of two long-term field experiments initiated in 1978 at the Northeast Research Center (NERC) and in 1954 at the Clarion-Webster Research Center (CWRC), both in Iowa. Surface soil samples were taken in 1996 and 1997 from plots of corn (Zea mays L.), soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), oats (Avena sativa L.), or meadow (alfalfa) (Medicago sativa L.) that had received 0 or 180 kg N ha–1 before corn and an annual application of 20 kg P and 56 kg K ha–1. The Cmic and Nmic values were determined by the chloroform-fumigation-extraction method and the chloroform-fumigation-incubation method, respectively. The Cmic and Nmic values were significantly affected (P<0.05) by crop rotation and plant cover at time of sampling, but not by N fertilization. In general, the highest Cmic and Nmic contents were found in the multicropping systems (4-year rotations) taken in oats or meadow plots, and the lowest values were found in continuous corn and soybean systems. On average, Cmic made up about 1.0% of the organic C (Corg), and Nmic contributed about 2.4% of the total N (Ntot) in soils at both sites and years of sampling. The Cmic values were significantly correlated with Corg contents (r≥0.41**), whereas the relationship between Cmic and Ntot was significant (r≤0.53***) only for the samples taken in 1996 at the NERC site. The Cmic : Nmic ratios were, on average, 4.3 and 6.4 in 1996, and 7.6 and 11.4 in 1997 at the NERC and CWRC sites, respectively. Crop rotation significantly (P<0.05) affected this ratio only at the NERC site, and N fertilization showed no effect at either site. In general, multicropping systems resulted in greater Cmic : Corg (1.1%) and Nmic : Ntot (2.6%) ratios than monocropping systems (0.8% and 2.1%, respectively).

The influence of crop residues with different C: N ratios on the N2O emission from differently managed loamy sand soddy-podzolic soils was studied in a 50-day laboratory experiment. The application of crop residues into the soil increased the N2O emission from the soil. The N2O emission was lower from the poorly managed soil as compared to the soil with the high degree of cultivation. The crop residues form the following decreasing sequence in terms of their effect on the cumulative N2O flow: cabbage > red clover > perennial grasses > straw of spring wheat. The composting of crop residues with a wide C: N ratio for 50 days did not exceed the critical value of the emission factor (1.25%), whereas, in the composting of crop residues with a narrow C: N ratio, the critical value of the emission factor was 1.3–2.0 times higher.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate, during the phenological stages of inoculated soybean crop [Glycine max (L.) Merrill], the effect of different N fertilization levels and inoculation with Bradyrhizobium japonicum on N2O emissions from the soil. Gas emissions were evaluated at field conditions by the static-chamber method. Nitrogen fertilization increased N2O emissions significantly (P < 0.05). The variable that best explained cumulative N2O emissions during the whole soybean growing season was the soil nitrate level (r 2 = 0.1899; P = 0.0231). Soil moisture presented a greater control on N2O emissions between the grain-filling period and the crop commercial maturity (r 2 = 0.5361; P < 0.0001), which coincided with a positive balance of the available soil N, as a consequence of the decrease in crop requirements and root and nodular decomposition. Only soil soluble carbon (r 2 = 0.29; P = 0.019) and moisture (r 2 = 0.24; P = 0.039) were correlated with N2O emissions during the residue decomposition period. The relationship between soil variables and N2O emissions depended on crop phenological or stubbles decomposition stages.

The effect of soil freeze–thaw cycles on the denitrification potential was examined based on the C2H2 inhibition method. The gross N2O production curve of the soil sample (incubation with C2H2) showed minor changes between the freeze–thaw treatment and the unfrozen control. However, kinetics analysis revealed that the initial production rate, an indicator of the population density of denitrifying communities, decreased (P = 0.043) and the specific growth rate constant, an indicator of the activity of denitrifying communities, increased (P = 0.039) as a result of the freeze–thaw cycles in five of six soil samples examined. The increase in the specific growth rate constant suggested the stimulation of the activity of denitrifying communities that survived after the freeze–thaw cycles and may explain the minor suppression on the gross N2O production in spite of decreasing the population density of denitrifying communities that was suggested by the initial production rate. The net N2O production curve of the soil sample (incubation without C2H2) showed a remarkable change in one out of six soil samples, and in that one soil sample, N2O release to the atmosphere was largely stimulated (7.6 times) by the freeze–thaw cycles. However, the stimulation of the N2O release by the freeze–thaw cycles was even observed in two other selected soil samples (4.6 and 1.8 times), suggesting that an imbalance in the N2O-producing and N2O-reducing activities of denitrifying communities might complementally explain the N2O release stimulated by the freeze–thaw cycles.

Efforts to restore productivity of pastures often employ agricultural management regimes involving either tillage or no-tillage options combined with various combinations of fertilizer application, herbicide use and the planting of a cash crop prior to the planting of forage grasses. Here we report on the emissions of CO2, N2O and NO from the initial phases (first 6 months) of three treatments in central Rondônia. The treatments were (1) control; (2) conventional tillage followed by planting of forage grass (Brachiaria brizantha) and fertilizer additions; (3) no-tillage/herbicide treatment followed by two plantings, the first being a cash crop of rice followed by forage grass. In treatment 3, the rice was fertilized. Relative to the control, tillage increased CO2 emission by 37% over the first 2 months, while the no-tillage/herbicide regime decreased CO2 emissions by 7% over the same period. The cumulative N2O emissions over the first 2 months from the tillage regime (0.94 kg N ha–1) were much higher than the N2O releases from either the no-tillage/herbicide regime (0.64 kg N ha–1) or the control treatment (0.04 kg N ha–1). The highest levels of N2O fluxes from both management regimes were observed following N fertilizations. The cumulative NO releases over the first 2 months were largest in the tillage treatment (0.98 kg N ha–1), intermediate in the no-tillage treatment (0.72 kg N ha–1), and smallest in the control treatment (0.12 kg N ha–1). For the first week following fertilization the percentage of fertilizer N lost as N2O plus NO was 1.0% for the tillage treatment and 3.0% for the no-tillage treatment.

The effects of salt type and its concentration on nitrification, N mineralization and N2O emission were examined under two levels of moisture content in Yellow soil and Andosol samples as simulated to agriculture under arid/semi-arid conditions and under heavy application of fertilizer in a glass-house, respectively. The salt mixtures were composed of chlorides (NaCl and NH4Cl) or sulphates [Na2SO4 and (NH4)2SO4] and were added at various concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 M as in the soil solution). These salts were added to non-saline Yellow soil at different moisture contents (45 or 40 and 65% of maximum water-holding capacity; WHC) and their effects on the changes in mineral N (NH4 +-N and NO3 -N) concentration as well as N2O emission were examined periodically during laboratory incubation. We also measured urease activities to know the effect of salts on N mineralization. Furthermore, Ca(NO3)2 solution was added at various concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.8 M as in the soil solution) to a non-saline Andosol taken from the subsurface layer in a glass-house and incubated at different moisture contents (50% and 70% of WHC) to examine their effects on changes in mineral N. Nitrification was inhibited by high, but remained unaffected by low, salt concentrations. These phenomena were shown in both the model experiments. It was considered that the salinity level for inhibition of nitrification was an electric conductivity (1 : 5) of 1 dS m–1. This level was independent of the type of salts or soil, and was not affected by soil moisture content. The critical level of salts for urease activities was about 2 dS m–1. The emission rate of N2O was maximum at the beginning of the incubation period and stabilized at a low level after an initial peak. There was no significant difference in N2O emission among the treatments at different salt concentrations, while higher moisture level enhanced N2O emission remarkably. In this study, we investigated N2O emissions from two fields under minimum tillage, cropped with maize (MT maize) and summer oats (MT oats), and a conventionally tilled field cropped with maize (CT maize). Nitrous oxide losses from the MT maize and MT oats fields (5.27 and 3.64 kg N2O-N ha−1, respectively) were significantly higher than those from the CT maize field (0.27 kg N2O-N ha−1) over a period of 1 year. The lower moisture content in CT maize (43% water-filled pore space [WFPS] compared to 60–65%) probably caused the difference in total N2O emissions. Denitrification was found to be the major source of N2O loss. Emission factors calculated from the MT field data were high (0.04) compared to the CT field (0.001). All data were simulated with the denitrification decomposition model (DNDC). For the CT field, N2O and N2O + N2 emissions were largely overestimated. For the MT fields, there was a better agreement with the total N2O and N2O + N2 emissions, although the N2O emissions from the MT maize field were underestimated. The simulated N2O emissions were particularly influenced by fertilization, but several other measured N2O emission peaks associated with other management practices at higher WFPS were not captured by the model. Several mismatches between simulated and measured \textNH4+ {\text{NH}}_4^ + , \textNO3- {\text{NO}}_3^ - and WFPS for all fields were observed. These mismatches together with the insensitivity of the DNDC model for increased N2O emissions at the management practices different from fertilizer application explain the limited similarity between the simulated and measured N2O emissions pattern from the MT fields.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions were measured from an irrigated sandy-clay loam cropped to maize and wheat, each receiving urea at 100 kg N ha–1. During the maize season (24 August–26 October), N2O emissions ranged between –0.94 and 1.53 g N ha–1 h–1 with peaks during different irrigation cycles (four) ranging between 0.08 and 1.53 g N ha–1 h–1. N2O sink activity during the maize season was recorded on 10 of the 29 sampling occasions and ranged between 0.18 and 0.94 g N ha–1 h–1. N2O emissions during the wheat season (22 November–20 April) varied between –0.85 and 3.27 g N ha–1 h–1, whereas peaks during different irrigation cycles (six) were in the range of 0.05–3.27 g N ha–1 h–1. N2O sink activity was recorded on 14 of the 41 samplings during the wheat season and ranged between 0.01 and 0.87 g N ha–1 h–1. Total N2O emissions were 0.16 and 0.49 kg N ha–1, whereas the total N2O sink activity was 0.04 and 0.06 kg N ha–1 during the maize and wheat seasons, respectively. N2O emissions under maize were significantly correlated with denitrification rate and soil NO3 -N but not with soil NH4 +-N or soil temperature. Under wheat, however, N2O emissions showed a strong correlation with soil NH4 +-N, soil NO3 -N and soil temperature but not with the denitrification rate. Under either crop, N2O emissions did not show a significant relationship with water-filled pore space or soil respiration.
