A 60‐day study was conducted to determine the response of juvenile bluegill Lepomis macrochirus to seven experimental diets, formulated using a blend of alternative protein sources as a replacement for fish meal. Adequate levels (digestible basis) of energy, protein and amino acids were maintained in diets 1–6, whereas slightly lower protein and energy levels were provided in diet 7. Feed cost per tonne ranged from $ 798.9 (diet 1, 550 g Kg?1 fish meal) to $ 515.8 (diet 6, 0 g kg?1 fish meal), or to $ 507.2 (diet 7, 0 g Kg?1 fish meal). Three commercial diets were included in the study as reference diets: a high‐energy and a low‐energy trout diet, as well as a catfish diet. Quintuplicate bluegill groups (~22 g, n = 10 fish group?1) were fed the experimental diets twice daily to apparent satiation. No major differences in feed consumption, feed efficiency and growth rates were detected among the bluegill groups fed the experimental diets. Trout diets generally produced higher fish fat deposition, whereas the catfish diet produced a poorer fish growth rate relative to the experimental diets. Under the reported conditions, results indicate diet 6, comprising predominantly soybean meal and porcine meat and bone meal, to be the most economical diet for juvenile bluegill.

A 6‐week feeding trial was carried out in glass tanks to determine the effects of partial replacement of fish meal (FM) with a combination of meat and bone meal (MBM), poultry by‐product meal (PBM), blood meal (BM) and corn gluten meal (CGM) in practical diets on the growth, nutrient digestibility and body composition of Pacific white shrimp. Six practical diets were formulated, containing two levels of crude protein (CP) (330 and 380 g kg?1) and similar crude lipid (CL) levels. For the 330 g kg?1 dietary protein level, 0, 357 and 714 g kg?1 FM were replaced by the mixture in Diets 1–3, respectively; while 0, 514 and 784 g kg?1 FM were replaced in Diets 4–6, respectively, for 380 g kg?1 dietary protein level. White shrimp‐fed diets containing 330 g kg?1 CP had significantly lower weight gain compared with white shrimp fed diets containing 380 g kg?1 CP. Increasing the mixture and dietary protein level significantly raised the body ash content of white shrimp. White shrimp fed a low‐protein diet obtained better nutrient digestibility compared with those fed a high‐protein diet.

This study was conducted to compare the effects of fish meal (FM) replacement by two types of soybean meals (SBMs) on activities of digestive enzyme, intestinal brush border enzyme and aminotransferases of juvenile Japanese seabass (initial weight 8.3 ± 0.2 g). Nine isonitrogenous (crude protein 44%) and isoenergetic (20 kJ g?1) experimental diets replacing 0 (the control), 15%, 30%, 45% and 60% FM protein by high‐protein SBM (HSB) or commercial SBM (CSB) were formulated. The concentrations of anti‐nutritional factors (ANFs) in HSB were relatively lower compared with CSB (< 0.05). After 10‐week feeding experiment, activities of digestive enzymes, intestinal brush border enzymes and aminotransferases in liver decreased with increasing dietary SBM. When the substitution level was above 30% with CSB and 60% with HSB, activities of pepsin, disaccharidase in the intestinal brush border membrane and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in liver were significantly lower than the control. However, activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and AST in serum were significantly higher than the control when the substitution level was above 30% with CSB and 60% with HSB. Regression analysis showed that effects of FM substitution by HSB on digestion and metabolism of juvenile seabass were relatively smaller compared with CSB.

A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing soybean meal (SBM) with rubber seed meal (RSM) on digestive enzyme activity, nutrient digestibility and retention in juvenile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus × Oreochromis aureus). Five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were formulated with 0 (control), 100, 200, 300 and 400 g kg−1 RSM replacing graded levels of SBM respectively. Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate groups of 30 fish (initial average weight 5.2 g) per aquarium in a rearing system maintained at 29 ± 1°C for 8 weeks. The hepatic protease and lipase activities gradually decreased with increasing dietary RSM level, but no significant differences were observed among the low inclusion level (0–200 g kg−1) groups. The apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter, crude protein, crude lipid and ash showed a similar trend as the hepatic protease and lipase activities. The retentions of protein and individual essential amino acid (except lysine, threonine and leucine) in fish fed diet with 200 g kg−1 RSM were similar to those in fish fed the control diet. These results indicate that dietary RSM inclusion level up to 200 g kg−1 did not markedly affect the digestive enzyme activity, nutrient digestibility and retention in tilapia, whereas these were depressed by the inclusion of 400 g kg−1 RSM.

A 12‐week experiment was conducted to evaluate the suitability of gambusia (Gambusia affinis) fish meal (GFM) as a partial and complete substitute for the protein supplied by herring fish meal (HFM) in diets for red tilapia fingerlings (mean weight 0.42 g). Seven isonitrogenous (35% crude protein), isolipidic (9% fat) and isoenergetic (15.9 kJ DE‐g?1 diets were formulated in which GFM replaced 0.0, 10, 25, 50, 75, 90 and 100% of the protein supplied by HFM. In general, GFM exhibited good potential as a substitute for HFM in red tilapia diets with no adverse effects on growth, feed efficiency, body composition, blood parameters or apparent digestibility of dry matter, protein and gross energy compared with the HFM‐based control diet. Growth performance (in terms of final weight, weight gain, per cent increase in weight and growth rate) of fish fed diets containing GFM at 25 or 50% level of replacement for HFM‐protein (diets 3 and 4) was statistically higher than for fish fed diets containing GFM at replacement levels >50%. Diet 4 had the best economic efficiency of fish weight gain. Partial or complete substitution of GFM for HFM did not affect feed utilization efficiency (in terms of FCR, FER, PER and APU) or digestibility coefficients of dry matter, protein and gross energy compared with those of the HFM‐based diet. Apparent protein digestibility varied little between diets, ranging from 84.2 to 87.3% with no significant differences. Survival of fish fed all the experimental diets (except for fish fed GFM at 90 or 100% level of replacement for HFM‐protein) was comparable with that of fish fed the control diet and ranged from 91.7 to 98.3%.

An 8‐week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the potential of replacing fish meal with poultry by‐product meal (PBM) and feather meal (FEM) in giant croaker (Nibea japonica) diet. The control diet (C) contained 400 g/kg fish meal, and 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% of the fish meal in diet C was replaced by a blend of PBM and FEM (PBM: FEM = 7:3) in diets B20, B40, B60 and B80, respectively. The weight gain and feed intake of fish fed diet C did not differ from those of fish fed diets B20 and B40 (> .05), but were higher than those of fish fed diets B60 and B80 (< .05). Phosphorus retention efficiency was lower in fish fed diets C, B20 and B40 than in fish fed diets R60 and R80 (< .05). No significant differences were found in feed conversion ratio, nitrogen retention efficiency, condition factor, hepatosomatic index, body composition and nitrogen waste among the treatments (> .05). Ratio of fish meal consumption to fish production linearly declined with the decrease in dietary fish meal level. This study indicates that dietary fish meal for giant croaker could be reduced to 240 g/kg by inclusion of the blend of PBM and FEM.

An 8‐week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing soybean meal (SBM) with canola meal (CM) on growth, feed utilization, body composition and haematological indices of juvenile hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus×Oreochromis aureus). Six isonitrogenous diets containing graded levels of CM (0, 95, 190, 285, 380 and 634 g kg?1 of diet corresponding to 0%, 15%, 30%, 45%, 60% and 100%, respectively, of protein from SBM) to replace SBM on an equal protein basis were fed to triplicate groups of juvenile fish (initial weight=6.3 g). The results indicated that up to 30% of SBM could be replaced by CM without causing a significant reduction in growth performance. Fish fed with diets in which CM replaced over 45% of SBM had a significantly lower protein efficiency ratio and a significantly higher feed conversion ratio than fish fed with other diets. The apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of dry matter, protein and phosphorus were lowest for fish fed the CM100 diet. Significant differences in haemoglobin, haematocrit and white blood cell concentration were found in fish fed diets with different CM levels. It is concluded that up to 19.02% CM can be used to replace 30% of SBM in diets for juvenile hybrid tilapia without compromising growth, feed conversion and protein utilization.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate hydrolyzed feather meal (HFM) as a substitute for fish meal (FM) or soybean meal (SBM) in Nile tilapia fry diets. Triplicate groups of fish (initial body weight 2.30 g ± 0.01) were fed seven isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets formulated to contain 30 % crude protein and 19.70 kJ g?1 gross energy for 8 weeks. The control diet (CD) contained 22 % local FM and 30 % SBM, whereas in the other six diets, HFM replaced 33, 66 or 100 % of FM or SBM. The best weight gain (11.46), specific growth rate (3.14) and feed conversion ratio (1.24) of tilapia fry fed SBM33%, CD, FM33% and SBM66% diets were exhibited. Final body weight and protein retention increased in a linear pattern with increasing amino acids in the experimental diets with the exception of leucine and valine. The results indicated that good-quality HFM can successfully replace FM or SBM by up to 33 and 66 %, respectively, in Nile tilapia fry diets without compromising growth and protein utilization. The results also support the benefits of combining different sources of plant and animal proteins in Nile tilapia diets.

The effects of poultry by‐product meal (PBM) and selenium yeast (Se‐yeast) supplementations on fish meal replacement by soybean meal (SBM) in the diet of golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus) were examined. In trial I, a 2 × 3 layout including two PBM levels (100 and 170 g kg?1) and three levels of fish meal replacement (0, 40 or 60%) was used. At 100 g kg?1 PBM, fish fed the basal diet exhibited the highest weight gain (WG) and nitrogen retention efficiency (NRE) and the lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR). At 170 g kg?1 PBM, no significant differences were found in WG and NRE between fish fed the basal diet and diet with 40% of fish meal replaced by SBM. In trial II, the basal diet containing 170 g kg?1 PBM (trial I) served as a reference. A 2 × 2 layout included two levels of fish meal replacement (40 or 60%) and two levels of Se‐yeast addition (0 and 1 g kg?1). No significant differences were found in WG, feed intake, FCR and NRE between fish fed the reference diet and diet with 40 or 60% fish meal replacement plus 1 g kg?1 Se‐yeast addition. This study indicates that supplementations of PBM and Se‐yeast can enhance the level of fish meal replacement by SBM in golden pompano diet. Dietary fish meal level can be reduced to 140 g kg?1 by optimizing inclusion of SBM, PBM and Se‐yeast.

Two experiments were done to evaluate the effects of poultry meal (PM), meat meal (MM) or solvent-extracted soybean meal (SBM) inclusion on the performance of Australian snapper Pagrus auratus. In each experiment, test feeds were formulated with similar contents of digestible protein (DP) and digestible energy (DE) using previously determined digestibility coefficients for this species. In experiment 1, groups of snapper (initial weight 14 g) were fed 4 feeds containing 360, 480, 610 or 730 g kg−1 PM; 3 feeds containing 345, 320 or 500 g kg−1 MM; 3 feeds containing 420, 600 or 780 g kg−1 SBM. In experiment 2, groups of snapper (initial weight 87 g) were fed 3 extruded test feeds that contained combinations of PM, MM, SBM or blood meal (BM) which replaced all but 600, 250 or 160 g kg−1 of fishmeal in respective diet formulations. Both experiments included a proprietary extruded aquafeed (COM) to benchmark fish performance. In experiment 1, weight gain was highest in snapper fed feeds containing 360, 345 or 420 g kg−1 of PM, MM or SBM, respectively, and was similar (P > 0.05) to snapper fed the COM feed. Nonetheless, weight gain and protein retention efficiency tended to decrease as the amount of each test ingredient was increased. Relative feed intake was not affected by the inclusion level of PM, MM or BM, but declined significantly in snapper fed diets containing 600 or 780 g kg−1 SBM. Feeding behaviour indicated fish found these feeds unpalatable. In experiment 2, the harvest weight of snapper fed the 3 extruded test feeds was similar (P > 0.05), but lower than snapper fed the COM feed (i.e. 234 vs. 256 g). Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was best in snapper fed the COM feed (FCR = 1.53); however, the FCR of snapper fed feeds containing 160 (FCR = 1.66), 250 (FCR = 1.70) or 600 g kg−1 fishmeal (FCR = 1.60) was not different (P > 0.05). Australian snapper will readily accept feeds containing high levels of PM, MM or SBM and feeds containing these ingredients will support rapid weight and protein gain with little affect on whole body composition. In combination, these feed ingredients were able to replace all but 160 g kg−1 of fishmeal in an extruded test feed. As such, they serve as valuable alternatives to fishmeal and extend the manufacturing options available to aquafeed producers.

An 8‐week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing fish meal (FM) with soybean meal (SBM) and peanut meal (PM) on growth, feed utilization, body composition and haemolymph indexes of juvenile white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei, Boone. Five diets were formulated: a control diet (FM30) containing 30% fish meal and four other diets (FM20, FM15, FM10 and FM5) in which protein from fish meal was substituted by protein from SBM and PM. The dietary amino acids of diets FM20, FM15, FM10 and FM5 were equal to those of the diet FM30 by adding crystalline amino acids (lysine and methionine). Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate groups of 30 shrimps (initial weight = 0.48 g), each three times daily. The results indicated that shrimp fed the diets FM15, FM10 and FM5 had poor growth performance and feed utilization compared with shrimp fed the control diet. No difference was observed in feed intake, survival and body composition among dietary treatments. The plasma total cholesterol level of shrimp and the digestibility of dry matter, protein and energy contained in the diets decreased significantly with increasing PM and SBM inclusion levels. Results of this study suggested that fish meal can be reduced from 300 to 200 g kg?1 when replaced by a mixture of SBM and PM.

A study was conducted to investigate red crab Pleuroncodes planipes (Stimpson) as a protein source in experimental diets for postlarvae and juvenile brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus californiensis (Holmes). Four experimental diets were prepared. The base diet contained 10% shrimp meal, 25% fish meal and 27% soy meal plus other ingredients. Complete substitution of shrimp meal with red crab meal (RCM) was done on the remaining diets. Additionally, 5% of the soy meal was replaced with RCM in one diet, and 4% of the fish meal was replaced with RCM in the last diet. A commercial diet (36% crude protein) was used as an external comparison diet to provide a basis to evaluate the growth of shrimp on the test diets. The trial with shrimp postlarvae showed that diets containing RCM produced better results in terms of final weight (3.24–3.55 g), growth rate (0.044–0.046 g d?1) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (3.7–3.8) than the base or the commercial comparison diets. The FCR was significantly different between the base diet (4.5) and the commercial diet (5.5). Final weight (3.83 g) and growth rate (0.044 g d?1) were higher when the diet replacing 4% fish meal was used to feed juveniles. The commercial diet produced the lowest values of final weight (2.57 g) and growth rate (0.025 g d?1) and the highest FCR (5.6) (P<0.05). These results indicate that the use of P. planipes as a replacement for traditional ingredients in shrimp rations is desirable.

Soybean meal (SBM) is widely used in aqua feed products. In the European Union, only non‐genetically modified (non‐GM) SBM is accepted. However, global production of non‐GM soybeans is declining and is limiting its utilization in aqua feeds. Therefore, non‐GM SBM alternatives are required. In this study, guar meal was evaluated as a substitute for non‐GM SBM in test feeds for rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Fish (initial weight of 57 ± 10.1 g) were stocked to 12 experimental tanks of a freshwater recirculation system with a stocking density of 6 kg/tank (500 L). Fish were organized in triplicate groups and received isonitrogenous and isocaloric experimental feeds designated as control and test feeds 1–3, where 0, 50, 100 and 150 g/kg feed of non‐GM SBM was replaced by guar meal. During the experimental test period of 56 days, fish were fed twice a day until apparent satiation. Compared to the control group, daily feed intake of test feeds 1–3 was significantly increased by guar meal inclusion. No significant differences in feed conversion ratio and specific growth rate were detected among all the treatments. Furthermore, guar meal inclusion did not affect protein efficiency ratio. However, protein productive value was significantly impaired when guar meal incorporation was above 100 g/kg feed. In accordance with the affected protein productive value, the crude protein content of the proximate whole fish body declined significantly. In contrast, condition factor, hepatosomatic index, slaughter yield and fillet yield provided no significant differences between the experimental groups. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that non‐GM SBM could be entirely replaced by guar meal without affecting the general performance of fish and suggests guar meal as an appropriate alternative for non‐GM SBM in the nutrition of rainbow trout.

The effects of two plant ingredients (solvent‐extracted soybean meal [SBM] and high‐protein sunflower meal [HPSFM]) and three inclusion levels (0 percent, practical diet containing 25 percent fish meal; 12.5 percent; and 25 percent) of these ingredients were investigated on the growth, feed utilization, gut histology and gene expression in the distal intestine of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus (average initial weight, 330.1 ± 8.9 g per fish). Feeding experimental diets for 12 weeks resulted in no difference between HPSFM diets in body weight gain (BWG), thermal‐unit growth coefficient (TGC), feed efficiency (FE), feed intake (FI) or pro‐inflammatory mRNA expression (PIE) with increasing dietary inclusion and between SBM FE, FI and PIE. Differences in quadratic contrasts were observed for nitrogen deposition rate (NDR) and nitrogen retention efficiency (NRE) (p < .05), whereby HPSFM diets elicited the strongest positive response. SBM resulted in linear reduction in BWG, TGC and distal intestine simple fold length and width measurements (p < .05) with stepwise increases in dietary inclusion, whereas dietary HPSFM had no effect. Histological observations of individual villi indicated several symptoms of non‐infectious subacute gastrointestinal enteritis in tanks fed SBM, many of which were not present in tanks fed HPSFM. The dietary HPSFM seems to be more adequate to replace fishmeal in Arctic charr diet than SBM, when fed at a level of up to 25 percent at the grow‐out stage.

The present work was performed to assess whether soybean meal (SBM) could replace fish meal (FM) as a source of dietary protein in diets of the marine herbivore Siganus rivulatus. Five iso-nitrogenous (40% protein) and iso-energetic (14 MJ/Kg) diets were prepared with SBM replacing fish meal at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% dietary protein. A 60-day feeding trial was conducted with 240 juvenile S. rivulatus (initial body mass 1.74 ± 0.03 g). Survival, growth, feed, and protein efficiency and hematological parameters were assessed. Growth correlated negatively with increase in dietary SBM. All production parameters measured were negatively affected at all levels of SBM inclusion. There were no effects on total or differential blood counts, hemoglobin, or plasma protein, but hematocrit values were negatively correlated with SBM addition. Results suggest that total replacement of FM by SBM without adding other supplements is not recommended, even for an herbivorous marine fish such as S. rivulatus.
