Purpose

The objectives of this study were to explore the influences of pH on the release of Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, and Cr in sediments derived from the upstream, middle, and downstream reaches of Dongdagou stream in Gansu Province, Northwest China, and to examine the fractionation changes of heavy metals in the sediments after reaching their release equilibrium under different pH conditions.

Materials and methods

Sediment samples were obtained using a stainless steel grab sampler to collect the uppermost 10 cm of sediment from the channel bed. The pH-dependent release experiment was conducted in the solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:20 at different pH values (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12) at room temperature. The total Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, and Cr concentrations in the sediments were digested using an acid digestion mixture (HNO3 + HF + HClO4) in an open system. Metal fractionation of selected sediments was obtained using the Tessier sequential extraction procedure. Heavy metal concentrations in the samples were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

Results and discussion

The mean concentrations of heavy metals in sediments decreased in the following order: Zn (1676.67 mg kg?1) > Pb (528.65 mg kg?1) > Cu (391.34 mg kg?1) > Cr (53.48 mg kg?1) > Ni (34.27 mg kg?1) > Cd (11.53 mg kg?1). Overall, the solubility of Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Ni decreased with increasing pH, and they were strongly released at pH 2. Moreover, the solubility of Cr increased with increasing pH, and its release was highest at pH 12. After reaching the release equilibrium of heavy metals under different pH conditions, the percentages of organic Cu, Zn, Cd, and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide Pb decreased, compared to their initial fractions. The residual fractions of Ni and Cr were dominant, regardless of pH.

Conclusions

The average concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in sediments were highly elevated compared with the soil background values in Gansu Province, China. The results of this pH-dependent release experiment showed that the release behaviors of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cr followed an asymmetric V-shaped pattern, whereas Cd and Ni followed an irregular L-shaped pattern. The changes in the release of heavy metals in sediments were related to their redistribution between chemical fractionations.

The bioavailability and plant uptake of heavy metals (HM), as well as finding the most reliable methods for the prediction of availability, continues to be one of the most crucial problems in agricultural and environmental studies. In agricultural soils from two regions in Kosovo, known for its metal pollution, we collected 60 soil and plant samples (wheat, corn, potatoes, and grass). Heavy metals were extracted from soil with aqua regia (pseudototal concentration), NH4OAc‐EDTA (potential bioavailable), and NH4NO3 (mobile fraction), plant samples were digested with HNO3/H2O2 (microwave assisted extraction). The pseudo total content of Cd, Pb, and Zn showed high value in Mitrovice (mean: Cd–2.92, Pb–570.15, and Zn–522.86 mg kg?1), whereas in Drenas region Ni and Cr showed high value with a mean 258.54 and 203.22 mg kg?1. Also, the potential bioavailability and mobile form of these metals were increased in Mitrovice (mean: Cd–1.59, Pb–217.05, Zn–522.86 mg kg?1, respectively Cd–0.17, Pb–0.64, and Zn–15.45 mg kg?1), compared to Drenas. Cd and Pb were elevated in potato tubers (mean Cd–0.48 and Pb–0.85 mg kg?1). The TF was higher for micronutrients (Zn and Cu) than for non‐essential metals (Cd and Pb). Multiple regression analysis showed a good model for prediction of Cd, Pb and Zn content in plant with significance 99.9%, whereas this model was not significant for Cu, Cr, and Ni. Soil pH played a significant role in the content of Cd and Zn in wheat and potato plants. Clay content also showed significance in Cd concentration in wheat and potato plants, while carbon content was significant for Cd in grass plants, as well as for Zn in wheat and grass plants.  相似文献

Purpose

Arid and hyper-arid zones worldwide are reservoirs of chemical compounds, among them are various trace elements. With climate change, abnormal precipitation is occurring in arid and hyper-arid mountainous zones, which in turn is increasing the displacement of trace elements from mountainous to populated areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate trace element displacement of a sediment-laden flood in the Copiapó River Basin on March 24–25, 2015.

Materials and methods

Sixty topsoil samples were taken from 20 agricultural fields. Soil organic matter content, pH, electrical conductivity, and particle size were determined according to accepted procedures in Chile. Samples were acid-digested to determine total Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn content by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Hydride generation AAS was used for As and Se determination, and Hg was quantified by cold vapor AAS. Detection limits were 0.2, 0.05, 0.1, and 5.0 mg kg?1 for Cd, Hg, Se, and Mo, respectively. Correlation and principal component analyses were made, and theoretical distribution functions were fitted to each element.

Results and discussion

Metal concentration showed a strong correlation between SOM and particle size, explaining the first component from the principal component analysis. All trace elements correlated well between each other except for Mo and Se. Mo values were consistently below detection levels (<5.0 mg kg?1). Expected values for the elements were (95% of probability): 13–37 g Al kg?1, 10–50 mg As kg?1, <0.2–0.6 mg Cd kg?1, 13–25 mg Cr kg?1, 27–281 mg Cu kg?1, 27–40 g Fe kg?1, <0.05–6.5 mg Hg kg?1, 516–1.080 mg Mn kg?1, 7–24 mg Ni kg?1, 13–50 mg Pb kg?1, 0.2–0.6 mg Se kg?1, and 61–172 mg Zn kg?1. Concentrations of As, Cu, and Hg were consistently above national standards.

Conclusions

The authors conclude that the trace element contents in sediments deposited by the event are within expected values based on soil data in Chile.

Soil and plant samples (Lolio-Cynosuretum) were taken from four different locations in Hesse, Germany. Different doses of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers were applied to verify metal input due to fertilization. Metal concentrations in plants increased due to mineral fertilization. Detected plant cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) concentrations in non-fertilized plots were 0.04, 4.13, 106.5, 0.57, and 23.0 mg kg?1 and in long-term NPK-amended plots they were 0.31, 15.3, 524.9, 3.49, and 60.0 mg kg?1, respectively. Transfer factor (TF) was observed to decrease in the order of Cd>Cu>Zn>Mn>Pb. The results of regression analysis showed that organic carbon (Corg) content, effective-cation exchange capacity (CECeff), and bioavailable metal content are the most important predictors for plant metal uptake. This study confirmed that plant metal uptake was not only highly affected by the soil metal content but also influenced by soil properties.  相似文献

The To Lich and Kim Nguu Rivers, laden with untreated waste from industrial sources, serve as sources of water for irrigating vegetable farms. The purposes of this study were to identify the impact of wastewater irrigation on the level of heavy metals in the soils and vegetables and to predict their potential mobility and bioavailability. Soil samples were collected from different distances from the canal. The average concentrations of the heavy metals in the soil were in the order zinc (Zn; 204 mg kg?1) > copper (Cu; 196 mg kg?1) > chromium (Cr; 175 mg kg?1) > lead (Pb; 131 mg kg?1) > nickel (Ni; 60 mg kg?1) > cadmium (Cd; 4 mg kg?1). The concentrations of all heavy metals in the study site were much greater than the background level in that area and exceeded the permissible levels of the Vietnamese standards for Cd, Cu, and Pb. The concentrations of Zn, Ni, and Pb in the surface soil decreased with distance from the canal. The results of selective sequential extraction indicated that dominant fractions were oxide, organic, and residual for Ni, Pb, and Zn; organic and oxide for Cr; oxide for Cd; and organic for Cu. Leaching tests for water and acid indicated that the ratio of leached metal concentration to total metal concentration in the soil decreased in the order of Cd > Ni > Cr > Pb > Cu > Zn and in the order of Cd > Ni > Cr > Zn > Cu > Pb for the ethylenediaminetetraaceitc acid (EDTA) treatment. The EDTA treatment gave greater leachability than other treatments for most metal types. By leaching with water and acid, all heavy metals were fully released from the exchangeable fraction, and some heavy metals were fully released from carbonate and oxide fractions. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the vegetables exceeded the Vietnamese standards. The transfer coefficients for the metals were in the order of Zn > Ni > Cu > Cd = Cr > Pb.  相似文献

Purpose

The metal concentrations and Pb isotopic composition in sediments and plants from the Xiangjiang River, China, were investigated to understand the contamination and potential toxicity of metals in sediments; to determine the accumulation and distribution of metals in plant tissues; and to trace the possible pollution source of Pb in sediments and plants.

Materials and methods

Sediments and plants were collected from 43 sampling sites in the study region. After sediments were air-dried and passed through a 63-??m sieve, they were acid-digested and DTPA-extracted for determination of total and bioavailable metals. The plants were separated into roots, leaves, and stems; dried; cut into pieces; and digested with HNO3?CH2O2. Metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and Pb isotopic composition were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry.

Results and discussion

Maximum As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentrations in sediments were 47.18, 55.81, 129.5, 161.6, 160.4, 430.7, and 1,098.8?mg?kg?1, respectively. The bioavailable fractions of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn had significant linear relationship with their corresponding total contents in sediments while no significant relationship was observed between bioavailable and total contents of Cr and Ni. In general, plant tissues showed higher As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations and lower Cr and Ni concentrations compared with sediments. The 206Pb/207Pb ratios decreased in the order of total > bioavailable > stems ?? leaves > roots. A strong linear correlation was observed between the 208Pb/206Pb and 206Pb/207Pb ratios of the plant tissues, sediments, and the possible pollution sources of Pb in the Xiangjiang River.

Conclusions

As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn demonstrated higher contamination levels in sediments and plants compared with Cr and Ni. Cd had highest potential ecological risk. The Pb from anthropogenic sources with low 206Pb/207Pb ratios was preferentially associated with the bioavailable fractions in sediments and accumulated in roots. The Pb in plant tissues is mainly derived from the Pb in sediment and is taken up through the sediment-to-root pathway.  相似文献

Lygeum spartum, Zygophyllum fabago and Piptatherum miliaceum are typical plant species that grow in mine tailings in semiarid Mediterranean areas. The aim of this work was to investigate metal uptake of these species growing on neutral mine tailings under controlled conditions and their response to fertilizer additions. A neutral mine tailing (pH of soil solution of 7.1–7.2) with high total metal concentrations (9,100 and 5,200 mg kg?1 Zn and Pb, respectively) from Southern Spain was used. Soluble Zn and Pb were low (0.5 and <0.1 mg l?1, respectively) but the major cations and anions reached relatively high levels (e.g. 2,600 and 1,400 mg l?1 Cl and Na). Fertilization caused a significant increase of the plant weight for the three species and decreased metal accumulation with the exception of Cd. Roots accumulated much higher metal concentrations for the three plants than shoots, except Cd in L. spartum. Shoot concentrations for the three plants were 3–14 mg kg?1 Cd, 150–300 mg kg?1 Zn, 4–11 mg kg?1 Cu, and 1–10 mg kg?1 As, and 6–110 mg kg?1 Pb. The results indicate that neutral pH mine tailings present a suitable substrate for establishment of these native plants species and fertilizer favors this establishment. Metal accumulation in plants is relatively low despite high total soil concentrations.  相似文献

Purpose

The aim of this study was to obtain a complete picture of the geochemical character of the sediment in the eastern Posavina region, Serbia, an area which has thus far not been systematically investigated. Geological mapping and impact assessment were thus carried out for this area.

Materials and methods

Sediments were sampled (from 0 to 0.5 m depth) in four locations in eastern Posavina between 2002 and 2014. Eight heavy metals (Ni, Zn, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, As and Hg) and a wide variety of organic parameters (16 EPA polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), mineral oils, selected pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)) were monitored. Metals were analysed by flame and graphite atomic absorption spectrometry, and gas chromatography with mass detection was used for the PAH analyses. The origins of the monitored substances were classified using geoaccumulation index (I geo), ecological risk index (RI) and principal component analysis (PCA/FA).

Results and discussion

The sediments all contained higher heavy metals concentrations than the upper continental crust (UCC), suggesting dynamic natural and anthropogenic processes in this unique region. Significant variations (RSD values from 13 to 190) were observed for Cd (0.001–80.00 mg kg?1), Hg (0.01–5.40 mg kg?1), mineral oil (2.00–1851 mg kg?1) and the sum of 16 EPA PAHs (0.003–5.57 mg kg?1). The I geo index classified the pollution risk due to Cr as strong, Cd, Zn and Hg as moderate to strong and Ni as moderate. Based on PCA/FA analysis, the parameters were grouped somewhat differently, with anthropogenic activity found to be responsible for much of the Hg, Cd and Cr pollution present in the sediments.

Conclusions

The analysis revealed eight heavy metals (Ni, Zn, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, As and Hg), the sum of 16 EPA PAHs and mineral oil as parameters of great interest for this unique region. These parameters must be the focus of future monitoring programs, in support of appropriate remediation techniques and/or dredging activities, which are required in order to comply with the new Serbian regulations and the relevant EU recommendations.

Purpose

Inorganic contaminants present a major challenge for the restoration of aquatic ecosystems. The objectives of this study were to determine the extent of trace metal contamination and investigate the influence of different plant communities on trace metal accumulation in the soils of the Florida Everglades.

Materials and methods

Soil samples (n?=?117) were collected from 0 to 10-cm depth using a stainless steel coring device from sites with three dominant plant communities—cattail, sawgrass, and slough—of Water Conservation Area-2A (43,281 ha) of Florida Everglades.

Results and discussion

The mean pH in soils collected from three plant communities was 6.75–6.82, whereas electrical conductivity was slightly greater in the sawgrass (0.69 dS m?1) than cattail (0.58 dS m?1) and slough (0.40 dS m?1). Mean reduction–oxidation potential was greatest in cattail (?113 mV) than sawgrass (?85.3 mV) and slough (?48.3 mV) soils. Among 11 trace metals (As, B, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Zn) found in soil samples, Na had the greatest contents and was greater in cattail (2070 mg kg?1) and sawgrass (1735 mg kg?1) than slough (1297 mg kg?1). Four trace metals (B, Cu, Mo, Ni) were significantly greater in cattail than sawgrass and slough. Whereas, Mn was significantly lower in cattail (31 mg kg?1) than both sawgrass (84 mg kg?1) and slough (51 mg kg?1). Cattail also had significantly lower Cr (1.97 mg kg?1) and Pb (10 mg kg?1) than sawgrass (Cr 2.5 mg kg?1; Pb 20.8 mg kg?1). As (<6.9 mg kg?1), Co (<1.3 mg kg?1), and Zn (<17.2 mg kg?1) were not significantly different among soils collected from three plant community-dominant sites. Contents of Cd and Se were below the method detection limits (Cd 0.01 mg L?1; Se 0.2 mg L?1) and are not reported.

Conclusions

None of the trace metals in the soils exceeded the US Environmental Protection Agency sediment toxicity thresholds. Results from this study provided baseline concentrations of trace metals, which can be used to measure the success of restoration efforts in Florida Everglades.

Freshly deposited stream sediments from six urban centres of the Ganga Plain were collected and analysed for heavy metals to obtain a general scenery of sediment quality. The concentrations of heavy metals varied within a wide range for Cr (115–817), Mn (440–1 750), Fe (28 700–61 100), Co (11.7–29.0), Ni (35–538), Cu (33–1 204), Zn (90–1 974), Pb (14–856) and Cd (0.14–114.8) in mg kg-1. Metal enrichment factors for the stream sediments were <1.5 for Mn, Fe and Co; 1.5–4.1 for Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb; and 34 for Cd. The anthropogenic source in metals concentrations contributes to 59% Cr, 49% Cu, 52% Zn, 51% Pb and 77% Cd. High positive correlation between concentrations of Cr/Ni, Cr/Cu, Cr/Zn, Ni/Zn, Ni/Cu, Cu/Zn, Cu/Cd, Cu/Pb, Fe/Co, Mn/Co, Zn/Cd, Zn/Pb and Cd/Pb indicate either their common urban origin or their common sink in the stream sediments. The binding capacity of selected metals to sediment carbon and sulphur decreases in order of Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni and Cu > Zn > Cr > Ni, respectively. Stream sediments from Lucknow, Kanpur, Delhi and Agra urban centres have been classified by the proposed Sediment Pollution Index as highly polluted to dangerous sediments. Heavy metal analysis in the <20-μm-fraction of stream sediments appears to be an adequate method for the environmental assessment of urbanisation activities on alluvial rivers. The present study reveals that urban centres act as sources of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd and cause metallic sediment pollution in rivers of the Ganga Plain.  相似文献

Abstract

Heavy‐metal inhibition of nitrification in soils treated with reformulated nitrapyrin was investigated. Clarion and Okoboji soils were treated with ammonium sulfate [(NH4)2SO4] and a nitrification inhibitor. Copper(II) (Cu), Zinc(II) (Zn), Cadmium(II) (Cd), or Lead(II) (Pb) were added to each soil. A first‐order equation was used to calculate the maximum nitrification rate (K max), duration of lag period (t′), period of maximum nitrification (Δt), and the termination period of nitrification (t s). In the Clarion soil, the K max decreased from 12 mg kg?1 d?1 without the nitrification inhibitor to 4, 0.25, 0.86, and 0.27 mg kg?1 d?1, respectively, when the inhibitor and Cu, Zn, Pb, or Cd were applied. In the Okoboji soil, K max decreased from 22 mg kg?1 d?1 with no inhibitor to 6, 3, 4, and 2 mg kg?1 d?1, respectively, when an inhibitor and Cu, Zn, Pb, or Cd were added. The t′ varied from 8 to 25 d in the Clarion soil and from 5 to 25 d in the Okoboji soil, due to addition of Cu, Zn, Pb, or Cd and the inhibitor.  相似文献

Soil, aquatic biota (moss: Brachythecium rivulare; aquatic macrophytes: Juncus effusus, Potamogeton crispus; fish: Salmo trutta fario, Anguilla anguilla, Phoxinus phoxinus, Chelon labrosus) and sediment samples from the Urumea river valley were analysed for metals by acid digestion and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The sediments show the presence of metal pollution (Cd: 2.5–24 mg kg-1; Pb: 125–1,150 mg kg-1; Zn: 125–2,500 mg kg-1) because mining and industrial wastes. A selective retention of dense minerals in dam sediments contributes to the load of metal, but interstitial water analysis (Cd: <0.02–0.1 mg L-1; Pb: 0.3–1.0 mg L-1; Zn: <0.05–0.6 mg L-1) shows that precipitation equilibrium controls their mobilisation. Biota samples show evidence of metal accumulation, moss reaching 1,100 mg kg-1 in lead and 6,800 mg kg-1 in zinc. Soil from the valley is polluted by both, river carried material and industrial sources (Cd: 1.0–4.0 mg kg-1; Pb: 26–1,120 mg kg-1; Zn: 105–1,390 mg kg-1/math>), but they are used, indistinctly, for farming and pasture.  相似文献

Purpose

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of a counter-current leaching process (CCLP) on 14 cycles with leachate treatment at the pilot scale for Pb, Cu, Sb, and Zn removal from the soil of a Canadian small-arms shooting range.

Materials and methods

The metal concentrations in the contaminated soil were 904?±?112 mg Cu kg–1, 8,550?±?940 mg Pb kg–1, 370?±?26 mg Sb kg–1, and 169?±?14 mg Zn kg–1. The CCLP includes three acid leaching steps (0.125 M H2SO4?+?4 M NaCl, pulp density (PD)?=?10 %, t?=?1 h, T?=?20 °C, total volume?=?20 L). The leachate treatment was performed using metal precipitation with a 5-M NaOH solution. The treated effluent was reused for the next metal leaching steps.

Results and discussion

The average metal removal yields were 80.9?±?2.3 % of Cu, 94.5?±?0.7 % of Pb, 51.1?±?4.8 % of Sb, and 43.9?±?3.9 % of Zn. Compared to a conventional leaching process, the CCLP allows a significant economy of water (24,500 L water per ton of soil), sulfuric acid (133 L H2SO4 t–1), NaCl (6,310 kg NaCl t–1), and NaOH (225 kg NaOH t–1). This corresponds to 82 %, 65 %, 90 %, and 75 % of reduction, respectively. The Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure test, which was applied on the remediated soil, demonstrated a large decrease of the lead availability (0.8 mg Pb L–1) in comparison to the untreated soil (142 mg Pb L–1). The estimated total cost of this soil remediation process is 267 US$ t–1.

Conclusions

The CCLP process allows high removal yields for Pb and Cu and a significant reduction in water and chemical consumption. Further work should examine the extraction of Sb from small-arms shooting range.  相似文献

Natural surface soils in Southern Norway are strongly contaminated by metals from atmospheric deposition. Except from local pollution with Cu, Ni and to a limited extent Pb around the town of Kristiansand, this large-scale contamination can be ascribed to long-range atmospheric transport from other parts of Europe. Zinc, As, Cu, and Pb are all found in excessive concentrations in the surface layer of natural soils throughout the region, and in particular within a zone of about 20 to 40 km from the coast. In this zone the elements appear at the following concentrations or higher in the A0 layer (typical levels in other parts of Norway little affected by air pollution in parantheses): Zn, 120(30) mg kg?1; As, 4(0.5) mg kg?1; Cd, 2(0.2) mg kg?1; Pb, 160(15) mg kg?1. Possible harmful effects to soil biological processes of this contamination cannot be excluded.  相似文献

A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of chromium compost (0, 10, 30, and 50%) on the growth and the concentrations of some trace elements in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and in the amended soils. Compost addition to the soil (up to 30%) increased dry matter yield (DMY); more than 30% decreased DMY slightly. The application of compost increased soil pH; nitric acid (HNO3)–extractable copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn); and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)–, Mehlich 3 (M3)–, and ammonium acetate (AAc)–extractable soil Cr and Zn. The addition of Cr compost to the soil increased tissue Cr and Zn but did not alter tissue cadmium (Cd), Cu, iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), and Pb. The Cr content in the lettuce tissue reached 5.6 mg kg?1 in the 50% compost (326 mg kg?1) treatment, which is less than the toxic level in plants. Our results imply that compost with high Cr could be used safely as a soil conditioner to agricultural crops.  相似文献

Concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Cr and Ni in soybean (Glycine max L.) grown near the Dabaoshan Mine were investigated, and their potential risk to the health of inhabitants was estimated. In the Fandong (FD) and Zhongxin (ZX) villages, which are near the Dabaoshan mineral deposit, concentrations of Pb (0.34 mg kg-1 for FD), Cd (0.23 mg kg-1 for ZX) and Cr (1.14 and 1.75 mg kg-1 for FD and ZX, respectively) in the seeds of soybean exceeded the tolerance limit set by Chinese standards. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) from consumption of soybean seeds for FD inhabitants were 0.570, 0.170, 38.550, 142.400, 1.910 and 14.530 μg d-1 kg-1 boby weight for Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Cr and Ni, respectively. Our results indicate that soybeans grown in the vicinity of the Dabaoshan Mine accumulate some metals, and the seeds pose a potential health risk to the local inhabitants.  相似文献

The relationships between heavy metal concentrations and physico-chemical properties of natural lake waters and also with chemical fractions of these metals in lake sediments were investigated in seven natural lakes of Kumaun region of Uttarakhand Province of India during 2003–2004 and 2004–2005. The concentrations of Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in waters of different lakes ranged from 0.29–2.39, 10.3–38.3, 431–1407, 1.0–6.6, 5.3–12.1, 12.6–166.3, 0.7–2.7 and 3.9–27.1 μg l?1 and in sediments 14.3–21.5, 90.1–197.5, 5,265–6,428, 17.7–45.9, 13.4–32.0, 40.0–149.2, 11.1–14.6 and 88.9–167.4 μg g?1, respectively. The concentrations of all metals except Fe in waters were found well below the notified toxic limits. The concentrations of Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb were positively correlated with pH, electrical conductivity, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand and alkalinity of waters, but negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen. The concentrations of Cr, Ni, Zn, Cd and Pb in waters were positively correlated with water soluble + exchangeable fraction of these metals in lake sediments. The concentrations of Zn, Cd and Pb in waters were positively correlated with carbonate bound fraction of these metals in lake sediments. Except for Ni, Zn and Cd, the concentrations of rest of the heavy metals in waters were positively correlated with organically bound fraction of these metals in lake sediments. The concentrations of Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu and Zn in waters were positively correlated with reducible fraction of these metals in lake sediments. Except for Cd, the concentrations of rest of the metals in waters were positively correlated with residual fraction and total content of these heavy metals in lake sediments.  相似文献

This paper investigates the pollution load of selected trace elements in 32 soil samples collected around 21 different mining areas of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (Southwest Spain), integrating chemical data with soil parameters to help understand the partitioning and mobility of pollutants. The minesoils are depleted in acid neutralising minerals and show limiting physicochemical properties, including low pH values and very high anomalies of potentially hazardous metals. The total concentrations of As (up to 1,560 mg kg?1) and certain heavy metals (up to 2,874 mg kg?1 Cu, 6,500 mg kg?1 Pb, 6,890 mg kg?1 Zn, 62 mg kg?1 Hg and 22 mg kg?1 Cd) are two orders of magnitude above the soil background values. The close association of Cd and Zn with the carbonate content in lime-amended minesoils suggests metal immobilisation through adsorption and/or co-precipitation mechanisms, after acid neutralisation, whereas As and Pb are similarly partitioned into the soil and mostly associated with iron oxy-hydroxides.  相似文献

This study assessed the accumulation of Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in the sediment and biomass of P. australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. in a combined constructed wetland (CW) designed for the treatment of domestic wastewater of 750 population equivalents. The CW consists of two vertical subsurface flow (VSSF) reed beds followed by two horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) reed beds. The sediment in the VSSF reed bed was contaminated with Cu (201 ?±? 27 mg kg?1 DM) and Zn (662 ?±? 94 mg kg?1 DM) after 4 years of operation. Concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in the sediment generally decreased along the treatment path of the CW. On the contrary, higher Al, Cr, Fe, Mn and Ni concentrations were observed in the sediment of the inlet area of the HSSF reed bed. Redox conditions were presumably responsible for this observed trend. Metal concentrations in the reed biomass did not show excessive values. Accumulation in the aboveground reed biomass accounted for only 0.5 and 1.4% of, respectively, the Cu and Zn mass load in the influent. The sediment was the main pool for metal accumulation in the CW.  相似文献

Purpose

This study investigated the concentrations of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments collected from gully pots for road drainage in Hong Kong. The presence and intensity of anthropogenic contamination of road gully sediments were assessed. Identifications of potential sources of trace elements and PAHs were performed to help understand the situation for future control of pollution to the land and aquatic environments.

Materials and methods

Gully sediment samples were collected from gully pots of 18 roads that are potentially exposed to different pollution sources in Hong Kong. The selection of roads considered different road features, adjacent land uses, and traffic volumes. Composite samples were collected for the analysis of trace elements (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, and Zn) and PAHs by an accredited environmental testing laboratory. Geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (Cf), modified degree of contamination (mCd), ecological risk factor (Er), and pollution load index (PLI) were used to assess the level of ecological risk of trace element contamination. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) and PAH diagnostic ratios were applied to identify the sources of trace elements and PAHs.

Results and discussion

Elevated trace element concentrations were commonly found in gully sediments. The concentrations of Zn (267–3700 mg kg?1) were the highest compared to the other trace elements. Noticeable high concentrations of Cu (27–1020 mg kg?1), Pb (21–332 mg kg?1), and Cr (14–439 mg kg?1) were found in all samples. The PAH contents were moderate to high (0.6 to 24.7 mg kg?1). Commercial/industrial emissions and road features that cause frequent acceleration-deceleration and turning events showed important influences on the contaminant levels. Strong correlations between the concentrations of Cd, Cr, Pb, and Zn were identified, implying that these trace elements are likely from common sources. The contamination assessment indices reflect significant sediment pollution. The ecological risk ranges from the considerable/moderate-risk class to over the high-risk class.

Conclusions

The collected gully sediments are identified as highly contaminated and need to be isolated from the environment upon final disposal. Through the comprehensive analysis of the collected data, this study provides a detailed insight into the contaminant levels of road gully sediments and potential sources of contamination. Disposal of gully sediments and potential impacts due to release of contaminants into the downstream aquatic environment during rainstorm events should receive attention and need further investigation.
