Pike (Esox lucius) occupy coastal streams and rivers of the Baltic Sea, where they attain large sizes (>5 kg). These large sizes are perhaps due to the fact that they can tolerate relatively high salinities and can thus forage in the nearby more productive brackish environments. In an attempt to quantify the extent to which pike utilise brackish environments, and to provide some insight into the underlying causes for brackish water migrations, we tagged 30 pike from a western Baltic river with acoustic transmitters and were able to track 21 individuals for 1 year. Based on experienced from local anglers, this population was assumed to be brackish in nature, where individuals underwent freshwater migrations to spawn. Our findings however suggest that the smallest and most active individuals make short exits into brackish waters and do so on rare occasions. Our results further indicate that neither sex nor size is related to activity level. We suggest that these patterns reflect two distinct behaviours—active and passive—and that large pike can be supported by the food availability in the river, without the need to venture into coastal zones, thus defying the conventional view that Baltic pike are all brackish in nature.  相似文献

This paper offers a socio‐historical study of the Prud'homie de pêche (the “Prud'homie”), a common‐pool institution (“CPI”) that has managed the fishery commons at Marseille since the Middle Ages. The evidence presented here sheds light on specific challenges faced by the Prud'homie during the early stages of globalization: one challenge is the import of a new fishing technique (the madrague) in the early 17th century, and another challenge is the arrival of migrant fishermen from Catalonia throughout the 18th century. On this basis, this paper explores the ways in which globalization has impacted the Prud'homie and identifies the mechanisms through which these challenges might threaten the functioning of CPIs.  相似文献

Abstract –  The present review focuses on the reproduction biology of pikeperch ( Sander lucioperca (L.)). Aspects like maturity, fecundity, spawning migrations, spawning habitats, onset of spawning, and development time of eggs were reviewed. The onset of maturity is reached at younger age in southern than northern populations due to higher growth rate in the south. Males mature at smaller size and are on average younger than females. Absolute fecundity is closely related to the length and weight, but no clear relationship could be found between relative fecundity and length. Statistically significant relationships were found between the onset of spawning and latitude, and between the duration of the development time of eggs and stable water temperature. Near the southern limits of distribution, the onset of spawning is in February while near the northern limits it is in June. The interannual variability in fecundity and in the onset of maturity and further the factors affecting them have not been studied much. Furthermore, it is not known whether these variations could affect the population dynamics of pikeperch. Little is also known about the actual spawning behaviour of pikeperch in natural habitats. This is probably due to the typical spawning habitats located at 1–3 m depth in waters with high turbidity and low visibility. Even though the homing behaviour to the same spawning areas is well developed in adults, it is not known whether the adults were actually born in the same area.  相似文献

To estimate the potential loss of fish larvae to downstream stretches, the downstream drift behaviour of fish eggs and larvae, in particular barbel, Barbus barbus (L.), was examined in the River Lee, a small, nutrient-rich chalk stream in England, using drift nets over nine consecutive 24-h periods in June 1993 at one location and over ten 24-h periods, once a week for 10 weeks from May to July 1995 at a location slightly more upstream. The density of drifting fish larvae was not correlated with river discharge in 1993 or 1995. A clear diel pattern was found in the drift of fish eggs and larvae, with barbel being a predominant species. Almost all fish larvae drifted at night both in 1993 and 1995, but the drift of eggs in 1995 occurred regardless of luminosity, although most eggs drifted during the day and at dawn. The highest densities of drifting fish larvae (in particular barbel) were found in the nets set in the highest water velocities, with the opposite pattern observed for fish eggs, suggesting either active response to the water current or shape-related differences in the drift behaviour of passive particles.  相似文献

Dynamics of coastal fish assemblages in the Baltic Sea are still rather poorly understood. In particular, little information is available on migrations and movements of the small‐bodied littoral fish species like Eurasian minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus L.). Minnow is considered typically as a river and lake species, but it also inhabits brackish coastal waters of the Baltic Sea. In this study, we investigated movement patterns of brackish water inhabiting minnows using otolith microchemistry. Fish were collected from four different sites (from two bays and two stream mouths) around Saaremaa Island. The results indicated that at least three distinct migration patterns exist: (i) seawater residency, (ii) fast springtime migrations to fresh water or to bays with lower salinities (areas near stream mouths) and (iii) prolonged migrations to fresh water (some cases overwintering in streams). Migration patterns listed above were not evenly distributed among sites, and some individuals did not migrate to fresh water in every year. None of the analysed fish were freshwater residents. Additionally, potentially ontogenetic effects on Mn and Sr concentrations were observed in the otolith core regions, which may have important implications for the interpretation of otolith chemistry data. The overall findings of this study demonstrate that much more complex migration patterns exists in brackish water inhabiting minnow populations than previously thought and at least some individuals do enter freshwater to reproduce.  相似文献

Electronic tagging provides unprecedented information on the habitat use and behaviour of highly migratory marine predators, but few analyses have developed quantitative links between animal behaviour and their oceanographic context. In this paper we use archival tag data from juvenile southern bluefin tuna ( Thunnus maccoyii , SBT) to (i) develop a novel approach characterising the oceanographic habitats used throughout an annual migration cycle on the basis of water column structure (i.e., temperature-at-depth data from tags), and (ii) model how the vertical behaviour of SBT altered in relation to habitat type and other factors. Using this approach, we identified eight habitat types occupied by juvenile SBT between the southern margin of the subtropical gyre and the northern edge of the Subantarctic Front in the south Indian Ocean. Although a high degree of variability was evident both within and between fish, mixed-effect models identified consistent behavioural responses to habitat, lunar phase, migration status and diel period. Our results indicate SBT do not act to maintain preferred depth or temperature ranges, but rather show highly plastic behaviours in response to changes in their environment. This plasticity is discussed in terms of the potential proximate causes (physiological, ecological) and with reference to the challenges posed for habitat-based standardisation of fishery data used in stock assessments.  相似文献

Beatty SJ, Morgan DL, McAleer FJ, Ramsay AR. Groundwater contribution to baseflow maintains habitat connectivity for Tandanus bostocki (Teleostei: Plotosidae) in a south‐western Australian river.
Ecology of Freshwater Fish 2010: 19: 595–608. © 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S Abstract – A global biodiversity hotspot, south‐western Australia is characterised by a highly endemic freshwater fish fauna that is severely impacted by habitat alterations. As is the case with many rivers in this region, the Blackwood River is secondarily salinised as a consequence of agricultural practices and this has caused population depletions of halo‐intolerant fishes. This study is the first to examine the role that groundwater intrusion has in maintaining habitat connectivity for an obligate freshwater fish in a secondarily salinised river. We determined the significance of nonsaline groundwater intrusion in maintaining habitat and migratory routes of the freshwater cobbler, Tandanus bostocki during prolonged annual dry periods; characteristic of Mediterranean climatic zones. Tandanus bostocki undertook large, yet spatially and temporally variable, localised movements through riffles. During baseflow, the period of major groundwater influence, movements were significantly associated with discharge. Analysis of gonadal development suggested that such movements were not strictly related to reproduction and were probably for foraging purposes. The study reveals groundwater is crucial in maintaining migratory routes through riffles and suggests T. bostocki may be reliably used as an indicator of aquatic habitat connectivity in light of groundwater extractions and also continued rainfall reductions in this region due to climate change.  相似文献

Abstract  The Argentine sandperch, Pseudopercis semifasciata (Cuvier), is the target of unregulated recreational and artisanal fisheries within the northern Patagonian gulfs of Argentina. Being a reef species, the applicability of conventional large-scale assessment and management approaches appear limited. A more suitable alternative might be offered by spatial approaches, but their effectiveness would depend on the species' degree of mobility. Underwater visual censuses were used to study the annual occupation pattern of shallow rocky reefs by P. semifasciata to evaluate the possible occurrence of spawning migrations and the potential of reserves to protect the stocks. The abundance of P. semifasciata was greatest in winter, intermediate in autumn and lowest in spring and summer, but densities were relatively stable and oscillated ±17–31% around the overall mean for each reef. There was no evidence of spawning migrations as no demographic changes were observed throughout the year. Young sandperches (<1 year old) were never observed on the reefs. Implications of the results for the management of this species are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract – Structural complexity offered by submerged macrophytes was shown to have fundamental effects on interactions between fish and their prey. However, less information is available for littoral reed (Phragmites spp.) stands. A previous field study found juvenile roach and perch to coexist within the reed stands. It was suggested that reed serves mainly as refuge against littoral piscivores, such that coexistence of perch and roach in the reed was externally forced. Several hypotheses were raised to explain why roach nevertheless showed good growth performance. Three of the hypotheses were tested experimentally. In particular, we were interested in how the confinement of fish to one of the reed or open water habitats alters feeding and growth patterns of juvenile age‐1 perch and roach. Fish were stocked separately into littoral enclosures for a 3‐week period in densities which had been found in the surrounding lake. Development of zooplankton and macroinvertebrate biomasses was observed by sampling the enclosures three times over the experimental period. Individual consumption of prey groups by the fish was calculated with a bioenergetics model, and was compared with prey group biomass in the enclosure treatments. The confinement of fish to one littoral habitat had clear effects on diet composition and growth rates. Roach fed less zooplankton and partially switched to macroinvertebrates in the reed enclosures when compared with the open water treatments, and consequently their growth rates were lower in the reed. Perch preferred macroinvertebrates in both habitats, without any difference in growth rates between the habitats. Effects of fish predation on both zooplankton and macroinvertebrate biomass were low in open water and reed enclosures. Daily consumption rates were only in a few cases higher than 40% of the available biomass of the respective prey group, but mainly were below 10% of available biomass. Therefore, we argue that both the diel horizontal migrations of roach and the relatively low consumption rate of fish when compared with the available resource biomass allow the coexistence of juvenile roach and perch in littoral reed stands.  相似文献
