In northern Fennoscandian lakes, monophylogenetic lineages of postglacial fishes are radiating into several adaptive forms, but the speciation process is still at an incipient stage. The speciation process has received increased attention over the years, but the underlying mechanisms and drivers are still debated and poorly understood. European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus [L.]) is the most abundant fish species in these lakes and has evolved into several ecomorphs adapted to different trophic niches and habitats. Genetic divergence has been observed among these ecomorphs, but the mechanism(s) responsible for the ongoing build-up of reproductive isolation has still to be revealed. As these systems are young in evolutionary time (<10 kyr), prezygotic and postzygotic extrinsic isolation mechanisms are thought to be more likely to contribute to the reproductive isolation than intrinsic isolation mechanisms. We determined the gonadosomatic index (GSI) of three ecomorphs in two replicated lake systems and used GSI as a proxy to investigate the prezygotic isolation mechanism, allochrony, as a driving factor of divergence in this adaptive radiation of whitefish. We found that the three ecomorphs differed in GSI values within and between lakes, suggesting different spawning times of the ecomorphs. We also show that males of one ecomorph had equal onset of maturity as another ecomorph, giving novel insights into the ongoing gene flow observed between ecomorphs. The result supports allochrony as a driver for the divergence process of whitefish ecomorphs, but more evidence is still needed to rule out that the three ecomorphs make use of different spawning grounds. 相似文献
The utilization of dredged material in dike construction as a substitute for traditionally used materials is considered as an option to preserve natural resources such as marsh sediments. As a prerequisite for this application, the equivalency with respect to soil physical and mechanical properties of the materials must be assessed. Previous investigations have shown pronounced differences in shrinkage behavior and desiccation cracking between sediments and dredged material. The key objective of the study was to assess whether shrinkage of processed dredged material can be reduced by further processing, i.e., dewatering, which can be referred to as ripening.
Materials and methods
To compare the shrinkage behavior of the materials, three different methods of different scales were applied. Small-scale methods conducted were the standard procedure for the determination of the shrinkage limit and the determination of the coefficient of linear extensibility (COLErod). Large-scale shrink-swell experiments were carried out in a specially constructed test system with 90 l capacity for a period of up to 385 days. Here the materials were ripened, i.e., air-dried, until shrinkage almost ceased, and a rewetting-air-drying cycle was conducted. Shrinkage and swelling were determined during the processes by measuring the changes in volume. On the ripened materials, COLErod was determined.
Results and discussion
The experiments show that the shrinkage behavior of processed dredged material can be ameliorated by ripening. COLErod of the ripened materials were about 20–80% lower than COLErod of the un-ripened materials. The large-scale shrink-swell experiments showed that shrinkage in the second drying cycle amounted to less volume than in the first drying cycle and that shrinkage behavior in contrast to the first drying cycle, where pronounced proportional shrinkage was observed, was dominated by structural and residual shrinkage in this cycle.
Conclusions
Ripening of processed dredged material is considered a useful pre-treatment option to ameliorate the shrink-swell behavior of processed dredged material and to obtain a better functional equivalency with traditionally used dike construction materials such as fine-grained marsh sediments.
Even in the temperate climates of Europe, increasing early season drought and rising air temperature are presenting new challenges to farmers and wheat breeders. Sixteen winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes consisting of three hybrids, six line cultivars and two breeding lines from Germany as well as five line cultivars from France, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and the Ukraine (referred to as “exotic” lines) have been included in this study. The genetic materials were evaluated over three growing seasons under a range of soil moisture regimes at the three North German sites Braunschweig (irrigated and drought‐stressed), Warmse (rainfed) and Söllingen (rainfed). The average grain yields in the twelve growth environments (water regime × season combinations) ranged from 6.1 to 13.5 t ha?1. The exotic lines showed little evidence of specific phenological adaptation to drought although they are frequently faced with water scarcity in their countries of origin. The hybrids and German lines exhibited higher regression coefficients (bi) to environmental means than the exotic lines, indicating particular adaptation to favourable growing conditions. The phenotypical correlations of grain yield between the various environments were high, ranging for instance from 0.6 to 0.8 for the irrigated and drought‐stressed environments at Braunschweig. Rust fungi like Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici are known to change their cell wall properties upon entering the plant tissue. Immunohistochemistry revealed the cellular localization of two class III chitin synthase isoforms in rust mycelia developing on and in the host plant. Isoform IIIa is restricted to fungal infection structures growing on the surface of the plant, such as germ tubes and, predominantly, appressoria. Isoform IIIb is found exclusively in haustoria developed inside the plant. Agroforestry systems are potentially suitable for conservation of tree genetic resources. Farmers around Mt. Kenya usually
integrate trees into their farm. Large parts of these trees seem to be of exotic origin, whereas indigenous species have priority
for conservation. This study aimed at determining on-farm richness, composition and frequency of indigenous and exotic woody
species around Mount Kenya to assess the suitability of farms for the conservation of indigenous tree species. 265 on-farm
plots of 0.5 ha size each were selected in 18 different agro-ecological zones by using a stratified sampling scheme. All woody
species within the plot were recorded with their local and scientific names. Total species richness was 424 (including 306
indigenous ones), mean richness per plot 16.5 species (including 8.8 indigenous ones). Eight out of the 10 most frequent species
were exotic ones with Grevillea robusta from Australia ranking first (found on almost 76% of the surveyed farms). The proportion of indigenous species increased
with increasing aridity and temperature. Dominance of exotic species was found at farms of humid mid- and highlands. Ordination
analysis revealed that mostly exotic species contributed to separation of farms in the highlands and upper midlands, whereas
indigenous species in the lower midlands and lowlands. As the frequencies of most indigenous trees were low, only parts of
the surveyed farms can contribute to conservation of tree genetic resources, particularly the less intensively managed farms
of the more arid lands. Farmers’ access to knowledge on valuable indigenous tree species and to quality seedlings of these
trees need to be improved to increase indigenous species’ frequencies on farms and possibly to replace some of the exotic

In this paper the determination of the physical/rheological characteristics is described for a series of commercial galactomannans of which the structural details have been reported previously. Both solubility of the galactomannans and rheological properties of galactomannan solutions and galactomannan/xanthan mixtures were determined. Using a statistical analysis approach an attempt was undertaken to recognize correlations between structural and rheological data. The best correlation found was between the abundance of galactose substituents at a regular distance (type of galactomannan) and the storage modulus (G') of mixed galactomannan/xanthan gels, underscoring the hypothesis that branching hinders the formation of a network with xanthan gum. Also, the G' for the group of locust bean gums correlated with the degree of blockiness, that is, the size and occurrence of nonsubstituted regions on the mannose backbone. In addition, galactomannans displayed an apparent decrease in gelling ability with increasing average molecular weight. That G' also relates to the type of galactomannan can therefore partly be attributed to differences in average molecular weight for the various galactomannan types. However, within the series of locust bean gums tested, also an increase of G' with molecular weight was observed. This can be explained by the decreasing number of loose ends of the polymers and the concomitant increasing efficiency in network participation with increasing molecular weight. 相似文献
The present study investigates the combined effects of feed-induced increase in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content and/or alpha-tocopherol content in pig muscles and preslaughter stress on cell integrity. Cell integrity was determined by plasma lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, and antioxidative status of muscle was measured by activities of the antioxidative enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase. Preslaughter stress increased LDH activity, reflecting loss in cell membrane integrity independent of increased content of PUFA and/or alpha-tocopherol. However, feed-induced increase of PUFA decreased the LDH activity in plasma immediately after slaughter. Catalase activity in the muscle tissue increased as a consequence of the high-PUFA diet, which may indicate an increased demand caused by introduction of oxidative labile PUFA. 相似文献
