This study examined how leaf and stem functional traits related to gas exchange and water balance scale with two potential proxies for tree hydraulic architecture: the leaf area:sapwood area ratio (A(L):A(S)) and wood density (rho(w)). We studied the upper crowns of individuals of 15 tropical forest tree species at two sites in Panama with contrasting moisture regimes and forest types. Transpiration and maximum photosynthetic electron transport rate (ETR(max)) per unit leaf area declined sharply with increasing A(L):A(S), as did the ratio of ETR(max) to leaf N content, an index of photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency. Midday leaf water potential, bulk leaf osmotic potential at zero turgor, branch xylem specific conductivity, leaf-specific conductivity and stem and leaf capacitance all declined with increasing rho(w). At the branch scale, A(L):A(S) and total leaf N content per unit sapwood area increased with rho(w), resulting in a 30% increase in ETR(max) per unit sapwood area with a doubling of rho(w). These compensatory adjustments in A(L):A(S), N allocation and potential photosynthetic capacity at the branch level were insufficient to completely offset the increased carbon costs of producing denser wood, and exacerbated the negative impact of increasing rho(w) on branch hydraulics and leaf water status. OBJECTIVE: To assess the iodine status of long-term refugees dependent on international food aid and humanitarian assistance. DESIGN: A series of cross-sectional two-stage cluster or systematic random sample surveys which assessed urinary iodine excretion and the prevalence of visible goitre. Salt samples were also collected and tested for iodine content by titration. SETTING: Six refugee camps in East, North and Southern Africa. SUBJECTS: Male and female adolescents aged 10-19 years. MAIN RESULTS: The median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) ranged from 254 to 1200 microg l(-1) and in five of the camps exceeded the recommended maximum limit of 300 microg l(-1), indicating excessive iodine intake. Visible goitre was assessed in four surveys where it ranged from 0.0 to 7.1%. The camp with the highest UIC also had the highest prevalence of visible goitre. The iodine concentrations in 11 salt samples from three camps were measured by titration and six of these exceeded the production-level concentration of 20 to 40 ppm recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), but were all less than 100 ppm. CONCLUSIONS: Excessive consumption of iodine is occurring in most of the surveyed populations. Urgent revision of the level of salt iodisation is required to meet current WHO recommendations. However, the full cause of excessive iodine excretion remains unknown and further investigation is required urgently to identify the cause, assess any health impact and identify remedial action. 相似文献

African breadfruit seeds were cleaned, parboiled (98 °C) for 15min, drained and dehulled. The kernels were sun-dried, then milled andsieved into flour. Nitrogen solubility (NS), water absorption capacity(WAC), emulsion activity (EA), viscosity, foaming and emulsifyingproperties of the flour were determined as functions of pH and NaClconcentration. The NS was pH dependent with a minimum at pH 4 andmaximum at pH 10. The flour also exhibited minimum and maximum foamcapacity at pH 4 and 10, respectively. The minimum emulsion activity wasat pH 4, a value which increased from 7–16% at pH 12. The addition ofNaCl at concentrations of 0.2 to 0.4 M improved WAC, NS, foamingand emulsion properties of the flour. Sodium chloride enhanced NS of theflour at pH 4–6 and EA at pH 2–8.The EA at pH 2, 10 and 12 correlated negatively (r = –0.30) with NaClconcentration levels; however, the correlation was not significant (p>

Past efforts to achieve selective bond scission by vibrational excitation have been thwarted by energy thermalization. Here we report resonant photodesorption of hydrogen from a Si(111) surface using tunable infrared radiation. The wavelength dependence of the desorption yield peaks at 0.26 electron volt: the energy of the Si-H vibrational stretch mode. The desorption yield is quadratic in the infrared intensity. A strong H/D isotope effect rules out thermal desorption mechanisms, and electronic effects are not applicable in this low-energy regime. A molecular mechanism accounting for the desorption event remains elusive. 相似文献

A chemical approach to atomic layer deposition (ALD) of oxide thin films is reported here. Instead of using water or other compounds for an oxygen source, oxygen is obtained from a metal alkoxide, which serves as both an oxygen and a metal source when it reacts with another metal compound such as a metal chloride or a metal alkyl. These reactions generally enable deposition of oxides of many metals. With this approach, an alumina film has been deposited on silicon without creating an interfacial silicon oxide layer that otherwise forms easily. This finding adds to the other benefits of the ALD method, especially the atomic-level thickness control and excellent uniformity, and takes a major step toward the scientifically challenging and technologically important task of replacing silica as the gate dielectric in the future generations of metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors. 相似文献
