Age negatively affects reproductive success of broiler breeder flocks. One of the main hormones involved in the change of fertility with the age is testosterone (TT). The introduction of young males at later production stages of broiler flocks is known as spiking and is expected to reduce the fertility decline with age. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of injection of different levels of TT and the effect of spiking on reproductive fitness of broiler breeder flocks. Two experiments were conducted on Ross 308 breeder flocks for 10 weeks (41–50 weeks of age). The experiment 1 included a control and three treatments corresponding to three doses of TT (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 cc), while the experiment 2 included a control and one treatment corresponding to spiking. The lower dose of TT (0.1 cc) and the spiking clearly slowed down the decline in hatchability. Therefore, either the external administration of TT to the males when the natural concentration of TT starts to decline or spiking the breeder flock with young roosters could contribute to improve reproductive success in later stages of the production cycle in broiler breeder flocks.

In several reciprocal recurrent selection (RRS) programs heterosis and favorable characteristics are achieved by means of one adapted and one non adapted population. We evaluated with molecular markers, an intrapopulation selection followed by RRS of one Spanish population adapted to Mediterranean Spain and one US Corn Belt population non adapted to Spanish conditions. Results from other authors suggest that during recurrent selection, non adapted populations have higher loss of variability, genetic differentiation and lower effective population size than expected according to the number of families selected each generation. This could be due to natural selection which is not under the breeder’s control and is expected to mainly act on non adapted populations. The number of markers with convergent allelic change was similar to the number of markers with divergent allelic change which explains the lack of genetic differentiation and the failure to increase heterosis during RRS because the effects of both types of changes compensate. It seems that the predominant mode of gene action depends on the particular germplasm involved in the RRS. By evaluating the allelic changes during selection, we identified four regions (2.04, 4.06, 6.03, 9.02) that significantly changed during selection in our selection experiment and that have been associated to selection in other selection experiments and to multiple traits in QTL experiments.

Sugary (Se1Se1) sweet corn hybrids do not have a high quality for human consumption according to the preferences of today's consumers, although they have a good stand establishment in cool environments. On the contrary, sugary enhancer (se1se1) hybrids have a high table quality, but a poor stand establishment in areas with a cool growing season. Sugary × sugary enhancer (Se1se1) sweet corn genotypes could be a valuable alternative for cool environments, but no information is available about the performance of sugary × sugary enhancer hybrids under such conditions. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the potential of sugary × sugary enhancer sweet corn genotypes in cool environments in comparison with sugary and sugary enhancer genotypes. Eight sugary lines and eight sugary enhancer lines were used as the parental lines of 15 sugary, 12 sugary enhancer, and 57 sugary × sugary enhancer hybrids that were evaluated in three different cool environments. The results of this work show that sweet corn cultivars with the Se1se1 genotype are an appropriate alternative for cool areas because they have better plant and ear types and a better eating quality than the Se1Se1 genotypes, and better emergence, early vigor, and shorter flowering time than se1se1 genotypes.

Kales (Brassica oleracea acephala group) are important vegetable crops in traditional farming systems in the Iberian Peninsula. They are grown throughout the year to harvest their leaves and flower buds. The glucosinolate content of kales is dependent upon the environmental factors, plant part examined, phenological stage of plant growth, and level of insect damage. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the changes in the total and individual glucosinolate concentrations during plant development and to determine if significant variation of glucosinolate levels can be explained by insect pests attack and other environmental factors in four locations in northwestern Spain. The total glucosinolate concentration in leaves of B. oleracea increased with plant age from seedling to early flowering stages. At that stage, the aliphatic glucosinolate content in leaves of B. oleracea declined drastically over time as the content in the flower buds increased. The highest contents of indolyl glucosinolate (glucobrassicin) and of the aromatic glucosinolate occurred in leaves harvested at the optimum consumption stage while flower buds contained the highest concentration of aliphatic glucosinolates, especially sinigrin. Sinigrin is reported to have anticarcinogenic properties. There appears to be a loss of total and individual glucosinolate concentrations related to pest attack. Leaves damaged by lepidopterous pests contained a lower total glucosinolate content (25.8 micromol g-1 dw) than undamaged leaves (41 micromol g-1 dw). The amounts of sinigrin, glucoiberin, and glucobrassicin were also lowest in insect-damaged leaves. Environmental factors such as soil properties and temperature appear to influence the glucosinolate content in leaves although more research on this subject is needed.

SUMMARY: The spatial distribution of six blood-protein polymorphisms in European and south-west Asian ovine breeds was analysed. Latitudinal clines were found for haemoglobin and transferrin loci. The respective F(ST) values are not significantly greater than those for protein-X, esterase, carbonic anhydrase, and albumin, where gene frequencies are not associated with latitude. The results suggest that historical processes of gene flow, rather than adaptation to different environments, have played a major role in determining the observed lives of gene frequencies.

Fusarium moniliforme and Fusarium proliferatum are the most frequently isolated fungi from maize (Zea mays L.) in Spain. Both Fusarium species produce toxins potentially dangerous for animals and humans, the fumonisins being the most significant of those toxins. White maize is preferred for human consumption, and extra care should be taken to avoid kernel mycotoxin contamination. The objectives of this study were to identify and quantify kernel infection by Fusarium spp. and contamination by fumonisin on white maize hybrids, to search for white maize sources of resistance to infection by Fusarium spp. and mycotoxin contamination, and to preliminarily study the genetics involved in such resistances. Ten F(1) single crosses derived from a diallel mating design among five white maize inbreds were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replications in 2002 at two locations. Fusarium verticilloides and F. proliferatum were detected on kernels of white maize hybrids cultivated in northwestern Spain. No differences in fungal infection were found among maize genotypes, but differences in fumonisin contamination were significant and could be related, in part, to differences in husk tightness. Among the genotypes studied, general combining ability (GCA) effects were the most important for resistance to fumonisin contamination. Inbreds EP10 and EC22 showed the most favorable GCA effects for husk tightness and fumonisin content, and the cross between them, EP10 x EC22, had the most favorable specific combining ability (SCA) effect for husk tightness. Inbreds EP10 and EC22 showed favorable GCA effects for fumonisin contamination and husk tightness, and the cross EP10 x EC22 was the only one with an average fumonisin level below 1 mug/g. Although this should be confirmed with more extensive studies, white maize inbreds developed from white maize landraces could be sources of resistance to fumonisin contamination.
