Members of the bacterial genus Azospirillum are root-associated bacteria that increase yield in cereals by promoting growth and alleviating drought stress. How plants integrate the many bacterium-derived growth-promoting stimuli with other environmental factors to generate a coordinated response remains unresolved. Using a commercial Azospirillum strain, A. lipoferum CRT1 and two host maize cultivars, it was observed that bacterization reduced the drought-induced increase in lateral root growth and enhanced the flood-induced increase in lateral root growth in the more drought- and flood-sensitive cultivar. In the other one, A. lipoferum CRT1 only elicited a moderate root growth response under low soil water potential. The photosynthetic potential and activity were increased in the earlier cultivar and decreased in the later one, irrespective of the soil water content. No impact of the bacterium was seen on the growth of the leaves of both cultivars under both stresses until the third leaf stage, therefore suggesting that it is a consequence of multiple primary adaptations to biotic and abiotic stresses. It is suggested that host–bacteria recognition leads to a stress-specific modulation of the root response and a differential stress-independent effect on photosynthesis. European gorse (Ulex europaeus L.) N2 fixation rate (%Ndfa) was studied in a maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aït.) oligotrophic forest. Fertilization field trials were carried out on 5 sites with various inputs of phosphorus (0–240 kg P2O5·ha?1). Seven to ten years after pine planting, gorse were sampled to evaluate the effect of P fertilization on gorse %Ndfa, determined using the 15N natural abundance method. One of the prerequisites of this method is the existence of a significant difference between the 15N/14N ratios in the atmospheric N reference and in the stand soil N references. This prerequisite was satisfied for 80 of 120 cases. The average %Ndfa was high (70 ± 3%) but with high local variability. No significant difference in %Ndfa was detected among P treatments. Nitrogen concentration of gorse was significantly higher in the highest dose treatments compared to the control. 相似文献

A sensitivity study was performed with a nonlinear elastic finite element model for monotonie analyses of wood-framed shear walls. The objective was to provide information about simplifying a model of wood-framed shear walls with no significant loss in accuracy. The simplifications concern features such as slips in joints between frame members, slips in hold-down connections, and bearing between adjacent sheathing panels. The results from analyses of a shear wall with an opening of window shape show that the effect of constraint by the bearing between sheathing panels and slips in frame joints on the overall stiffness of the wall is limited. Thus, there are great possibilities for reducing the calculation time by not taking these phenomena into account, avoiding an excessive number of degrees of freedom and iterations. The influence of the simplifications on the distribution of vertical reaction forces along the wall is more significant. Furthermore, if each simplification is introduced separately, the effect on the overall stiffness is greater. The difference, however, is less than 10%. The failing pattern of the nail connections is also clearly influenced by the simplifications when they are introduced separately. The results from the analyses show that slips in frame joints can be sufficiently represented by those in connection with the opening. 相似文献

We hypothesized that raw near- and mid-infrared spectra can be used as an integrated proxy of a large set of soil properties. The use of this method, in combination with dendrometric data, should provide a quick and cost-effective tool for optimizing the design of experimental forest sites.Methods
We assessed the local soil heterogeneity at 11 experimental sites in oak and beech stands, which belong to a new forest long-term ecological research (LTER) network. We used near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy in soil and litter samples. The spectra were subjected to principal components analyses (PCA) to determine the intra-site variability of the soil and litter layers.Results
Based on mapped PCA coordinates and basic dendrometric data, it was possible to design the experiment and minimize the interactions between the treatment layout and the tested variables. The method was validated with chemical analyses of the soil. No interaction was detected at the set-up of the experiment between the treatment layout and chemical soil properties (C, N, C/N ratio, pH, CEC, Al, Mg, P2O5, Fe, Mn, Na, and K).Conclusion
Near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy is a useful tool for characterizing the overall heterogeneity of soil chemical properties. It can be used without any preliminary calibration. In combination with dendrometric data, it provides a reliable method for optimizing LTER plots in different types of ecosystems.6.

Pseudodynamic (PSD) tests were conducted on two-level timber structures with plywood-sheathed shear walls, which each had
an opening of different configuration, to study the effects of the mechanical properties of the first and second levels on
the earthquake response of the structure. The specimens had two-level conventional post and beam frames that were 3 m wide,
3 m deep, and 6 m high with plywood sheathings nailed on one face of the structure. The first and second levels had different
opening configurations of window, door, or slit. Lateral forces were applied at the top of the first and second levels, calculating
step by step the next displacement based on the North-South (NS) components of the 1940 El Centro earthquake. The test results
were compared with those of the time-history earthquake response analysis using the lumped mass model and hysteresis model
presented in the companion article (part I). The experimental and simulated results showed that the simulation by means of
the lumped mass time-history earthquake response analysis predicted quite well the response of the first level, but tended

Bixa orellana fruit extracts were studied by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The intensity of the peak at m/z 396, assigned to the bixin molecular ion plus two hydrogen atoms (C25H(32)O(4+), decreased as the extract was heated and nearly disappeared with heating above 150 degrees C. Simultaneously, the formation of dimers at m/z 790, 804, and 818 was observed. The ToF-SIMS spectrum is characterized by a large amount of peaks generated by the principal ions and their multiple fragmentation patterns. To extract maximum information from the data set, multivariate statistical analysis was applied. Principal component analysis revealed important structural changes of the bixin molecule upon heating at different temperatures. Three different experiments were performed in order to obtain the major carotenoid composition of the natural colorant annatto (E160b) through ToF-SIMS (time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) analyses. In the first experiment, Bixa orellana seeds aril as well as its interior part were analyzed. The analysis of the seeds aril by ToF-SIMS gives the colorant fingerprint without any sample treatment, showing the presence of bixin and its characteristic fragments. The analysis performed in the interior part of the seeds indicates the presence of Fe. The second set of measurements was conducted on the seeds organic extract right after extraction revealing the same components observed by in situ measurement. A third set of measurements was performed aiming to determine the reason for the organic extract color shift observed after 3 months of exposure to ambient light at room temperature. In this case, it was possible to evidence the degradation of bixin by the loss of xylene molecules through ToF-SIMS and the probable carotenoid oxidation based on the C1s XPS spectrum of the degraded extract. 相似文献
