This study investigates the climate impact on the radial increment of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) in Estonia at the species’ northern distribution limit. Tree-ring width series of 162 living oaks were compiled into three regional chronologies—western (1646–2008), northeastern (1736–2011), and southeastern Estonia (1912–2011). Although these regional growth patterns are similar to each other and even to the growth patterns in adjacent regions, spatial differences in growth responses to climate were established. Thus, oaks growing on shallow soil in western Estonia are positively influenced by summer (June–August) precipitation, and oaks on the deeper soil in northeastern Estonia are favoured by June temperature, while oaks in the southeastern part of the country depend on both July precipitation and temperature. These relationships are pronounced especially in pointer years. However, due to the impact of regional weather fluctuations on tree growth, there is a lack of correspondence between the local and the pan-European pointer years. In addition, our research presents the first tree-ring-based palaeoclimatic reconstruction for the country. Although the created model has relatively low predictive skill describing less than a quarter of the variance in actual summer precipitation in western Estonia, it has passable capacity of detecting past rainfall extremes.  相似文献

Disease control with compost often is attributed to four factors including competition, antibiosis, parasitism and induced systemic resistance (ISR). Induction of systemic resistance by source separated household waste and yard trimmings compost against Pythium root rot of cucumber caused by Pythium ultimum was studied in a split-root bioassay. Split-root pairings were tested in root rot potting soil paired with potting soil, compost-amended potting soil suppressive to root rot paired with the potting soil, and compost-amended potting soil paired with the compost-amended potting soil. Only one side of the split roots was infested with P. ultimum. Root rot, based on dry and fresh root weights, was significantly reduced in split roots of plants produced in the conducive infested potting soil paired with the suppressive yard trimmings compost-amended mix. This suggested that systemic effects were induced in the roots by the suppressive compost against Pythium root rot. Growth of transplants germinated in the source separated household waste compost mix was significantly better than those germinated in the potting soil. Finally, root rot of plants germinated in the suppressive mix and then transplanted into the conducive mix was also significantly less severe than that of plants germinated in the conducive mix.  相似文献

Contamination of ground and surface water puts pressure on the use of pesticides. Pesticide contamination of water can often be linked to point sources rather than to diffuse sources. Examples of such point sources are areas on farms where pesticides are handled and filled into sprayers, and where sprayers are cleaned. To reduce contamination from these point sources, different kinds of bioremediation system are being researched in various member states of the EU. Bioremediation is the use of living organisms, primarily microorganisms, to degrade the environmental contaminants into less toxic forms. The systems available for biocleaning of pesticides vary according to their shape and design. Up till now, three systems have been extensively described and reported: the biobed, the Phytobac and the biofilter. Most of these constructions are excavations or different sizes of container filled with biological material. Typical overall clean-up efficiency exceeds 95%, realising even more than 99% in many cases. This paper provides an overview of the state of the art of these bioremediation systems and discusses their construction, efficiency and drawbacks.  相似文献

Air moisture is one of the main factors causing the greenhouse effect, but humidity has not been thoroughly studied at the ecosystem level. In 2006 a free-air humidity manipulation (FAHM) facility was established in Estonia to investigate the effect of humidity on the performance of two tree species—silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) and hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L. × P. tremuloides Michx.). The trial is located on an Endogleyic Planosol of former arable land and offers the opportunity to change relative air humidity through controlled artificial misting and drying. We measured the CO2, CH4 and N2O emission from the FAHM system using closed chamber and gas-chromatograph techniques from July 2009 to October 2010. Measurements were carried out once a month in three humidification (h) plots and in three control (c) plots. The vegetation period was rainy in 2009, but the next summer was relatively dry. The dry summer interacted better with the humidification. The CO2 flux decreased when the air moisture was higher than in the control plots. The soil acted as a sink for methane. Less CH4 was oxidized in the soil with increased humidity. Emission of N2O did not correlate with air humidity, although one could observe a clear tendency that there was a smaller N2O flux during the period with increased humidity. Expectedly, CO2 emission and CH4 consumption demonstrated strong positive correlations with soil temperature.  相似文献

Background

Insulin secretion and tissue sensitivity to insulin is considered to be one of the factors controlling lipid metabolism post partum. The objective of this study was to compare glucose-induced blood insulin and metabolite responses in Estonian Holstein (EH, n = 14) and Estonian Red (ER, n = 14) cows.

Methods

The study was carried out using the glucose tolerance test (GTT) performed at 31 ± 1.9 days post partum during negative energy balance. Blood samples were obtained at -15, -5, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 min relative to infusion of 0.15 g/kg BW glucose and analysed for glucose, insulin, triglycerides (TG), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), cholesterol and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). Applying the MIXED Procedure with the SAS System the basal concentration of cholesterol, and basal concentration and concentrations at post-infusion time points for other metabolites, area under the curve (AUC) for glucose and insulin, clearance rate (CR) for glucose, and maximum increase from basal concentration for glucose and insulin were compared between breeds.

Results

There was a breed effect on blood NEFA (P < 0.05) and a time effect on all metabolites concentration (P < 0.01). The following differences were observed in EH compared to ER: lower blood insulin concentration 5 min after glucose infusion (P < 0.05), higher glucose concentration 20 (P < 0.01) and 30 min (P < 0.05) after infusion, and higher NEFA concentration before (P < 0.01) and 5 min after infusion (P < 0.05). Blood TG concentration in ER remained stable, while in EH there was a decrease from the basal level to the 40th min nadir (P < 0.01), followed by an increase to the 60th min postinfusion (P < 0.01).

Conclusion

Our results imply that glucose-induced changes in insulin concentration and metabolite responses to insulin differ between EH and ER dairy cows.  相似文献

Variability in short root morphology of the three main tree species of Europe's boreal forest (Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth)) was investigated in four stands along a latitudinal gradient from northern Finland to southern Estonia. Silver birch and Scots pine were present in three stands and Norway spruce was present in all stands. For three fertile Norway spruce stands, fine root biomass and number of root tips per stand area or unit basal area were assessed from north to south. Principal component analysis indicated that short root morphology was significantly affected by tree species and site, which together explained 34.7% of the total variability. The range of variation in mean specific root area (SRA) was 51-74, 60-70 and 84-124 m(2) kg(-1) for Norway spruce, Scots pine and silver birch, respectively, and the corresponding ranges for specific root length were 37-47, 40-48 and 87-97 m g(-1). The range of variation in root tissue density of Norway spruce, Scots pine and silver birch was 113-182, 127-158 and 81-156 kg m(-3), respectively. Sensitivity of short root morphology to site conditions decreased in the order: Norway spruce > silver birch > Scots pine. Short root SRA increased with site fertility in all species. In Norway spruce, fine root biomass and number of root tips per m(2) decreased from north to south. The differences in morphological parameters among sites were significant but smaller than the site differences in fine root biomass and number of root tips.  相似文献
