The perennial cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum L.) is considered as an alternative feedstock to maize for biogas plants. Due to its ecological advantages of an extensive management and function as food resource for pollinators, it can be grown in Ecological Focus Areas (EFAs) since 2018. However, studies at the Julius Kühn-Institute in Braunschweig (Germany) showed that the assumed advantage of the cup plant of a high drought tolerance could not be confirmed regarding aspects of crop production and yield. We complemented this experiment by assessing how different soil moisture conditions affect the production of floral resources and insect visitation. In 2014, we sampled three irrigated and three rainfed plots of the cup plant. We quantified the nectar volume and sugar mass per inflorescence, the number of inflorescences per plant and calculated the total nectar sugar production. We further counted insect visitation on the inflorescences. Due to reduced numbers of inflorescences per plant and an earlier harvest, the estimated nectar sugar production was 58 kg/ha regarding irrigated and 20 kg/ha regarding rainfed plots. Honeybee visitation per inflorescence was about twice as high in the irrigated plots. Furthermore, the early harvest is a disadvantage for wild pollinators with a late activity period.  相似文献

Land use change due to the development of agriculture and community-based tourism has resulted in an increase in natural hazards (e.g. erosion and landslides) that affect sustainability in the Sapa mountainous area in northern Vietnam. Natural hazard regulating ecosystem services have protected the local people from the destruction of their villages, goods and natural resources, especially in the rainy season. However, it is difficult to identify which kinds of anthropogenic constructions support a co-production of regulating services in human-influenced social–ecological systems and in which specific types of land use and land cover the supply of such services takes place, especially in heterogeneous mountainous areas. Therefore, this research attempts to (1) distinguish between the potential and actual use (flow) of natural hazard regulating ecosystem services and (2) understand how soil erosion and landslide regulating ecosystem services can contribute to a sustainable management of different ecosystems, especially in rice fields and forest areas. Two models (InVEST for soil erosion, Analytic Hierarchy Process for landslide analysis) were used to analyze and map the contributions of natural versus anthropogenic components for regulating natural hazards in Sapa. The results show the incoherent distribution of erosion regulating services and low capacities of landslide regulating services in areas that have seriously been affected by human activities, especially forestry and agricultural development. The contribution of rice ecosystems to soil erosion mitigation is higher than in the case of landslides. Nevertheless, one-third of the area of paddy fields in the case study area have “no” capacity to supply natural hazard regulating ecosystem services and should therefore be re-forested.  相似文献

In water culture the effect of a locally restricted NO3 supply to the seminal root system of maize seedlings was studied. For this purpose plants were cultivated in containers with a wide-bore polyethylene tube positioned horizontally. Roots were suited through small holes in this tube and after sealing the holes with a non-toxic silicon putty, root segments in the tube could be exposed to a different nutrient solution from the rest of the root system in the outer compartment. In case of a locally restricted NO3 supply (NO3 was just supplied to the root segment within the tube), we observed an increase in root growth beginning at the fifth day after onset of the treatment. NO3 uptake rate (15N) within the tube was significantly higher than in control plants (receiving NO3 to the entire root system) as early as two days after onset of the treatment. One day later respiration (O2 consumption) of the root segment exposed to NO3 increased and at the same day we observed an accumulation of 14C activity (after pulse labelling of the shoots with 14CO2) suggesting an increased phloem unloading. It is argued that this leads to the measured increase in IAA activity (Radio Immuno Assay) in the zone of NO3 supply. Beginning at the fifth day we observed a stimulation of cell division rate (incorporation of 3H-methylthymidine), accompanied by an increase in length of first order lateral roots.  相似文献

Soil inoculation with cyanobacteria (cyanobacterization) is a biotechnological method widely studied to improve soil quality and productivity. During their growth on soil, cyanobacteria excrete exopolysaccharides (EPSs) which glue trichomes to soil particles, in a three-dimensional extracellular polymeric matrix. EPS productivity is an important screening parameter to select proficient inoculants and is affected by growth conditions and abiotic stresses. In this study, we evaluated the capability of the cyanobacterium Schizothrix cf. delicatissima AMPL0116 to form biocrusts when inoculated in sand microcosms under stressing conditions, and the characteristics of the synthesized polymeric matrix. In parallel, we evaluated the characteristics of exopolysaccharidic exudates of the strain when grown in liquid culture, under optimal growth setting. Our results pointed out at significant differences of the exopolymers produced in the two conditions in terms of monosaccharidic composition and molecular weight distribution, and proved the capability of S. cf. delicatissima AMPL0116 to form stable bioaggregates on sandy soils.  相似文献

The effects of supraoptimal root-zone temperature (30 °C) on growth and development of roots were investigated in water and soil culture with cuttings of two potato clones DTO-2 (heat tolerant) and LT-1 (heat sensitive) at different plant ages, with different compositions of the nutrient solution, and different light intensities. It is suggested that the negative relation between cutting age and heat susceptibility observed in our experiments, is a reflection of the decreasing shoot/root dry weight ratio rather than of age. Heat damage of root systems increased with the concentration of the nutrient solution, nitrate being the main factor responsible. The influence of light intensity on temperature mediated restriction of root growth was relatively small. However the roots of plants grown under low light intensity (60 W m−2 PAR) appeared to be less stressed by supraoptimal temperature, i.e. roots appeared brighter, thinner and more ramified than plants growing at high light intensity (190 W m−2).  相似文献

Effect of increasing nitrogen fertilization on copper demand in cereals Pot experiments were conducted with wheat (2 experiments) and spring barley (1 experiment) in a peat soil. Four N and four Cu fertilizer levels were chosen in such a way that, based on grain yield, within each N level there was a Cu deficient and a Cu sufficient treatment. For sufficient Cu supply, Cu level in soil and plant increased with increasing N level. Critical Cu concentrations in aboveground biomass at shooting [μg (g dw)?1] were 3.5 (lowest N level = N1) to 7.5 (highest N level = N4) for grain production of wheat and barley, but for aboveground biomass of wheat at shooting they were only 2.6 (N1) to 5.8 (N4). Based on critical Cu concentration at different N levels, critical Cu/N ratios were determined. These were independent from N level, indicating that Cu remobilization in the older leaves is unlikely even at N deficiency. The high critical Cu concentrations at high N levels may be explained by an increased immobilization of Cu. Under Cu deficient conditions, Cu concentration did not increase with increasing N level. However, under Cu sufficient conditions, N concentration and Cu concentration of the plant increased with increasing N level. The increasing Cu uptake with increasing N level may be explained by the release of amines into the root apoplast and the rhizosphere. Particularly under Cu sufficient conditions, these may mobilize Cu by formation of soluble Cu-amine complexes.  相似文献

We studied the influence of an immobilized laccase from Trametes versicolor on non-extractable residue (NER) formation of the systemic fungicide 14C-metalaxyl in soil. We added the enzyme (130 mU/g DW) to soil sterilized by gamma irradiation and observed that the amount of NER (6.3 % of applied radioactivity) after 10 days of incubation was enhanced about twofold compared to the sterile soil without laccase addition. Residues formed within samples without enhanced enzyme activity were mainly bound via ester linkages to all fractions of humic matter, i.e., fulvic acids, humic acids, non-humines, and humines, respectively. In contrast, residues formed in presence of immobilized laccase were more strongly bound by covalent linkages such as ether and C-C bonds, especially to humic acids. After chemical degradation of the humic matter, it could be observed that all NER contained the first major transformation product, i.e., metalaxyl acid. The findings underline that the residue formation of metalaxyl in soil may be partly catalyzed by immobilized extracellular oxidative enzymes through oxidative coupling reactions within the humic matter.  相似文献

Suitable predictors of degradability are sought to support the identification of biochars with large potential to increase C sequestration in soils. We determined the biodegradation of 9 chars from hydrothermal carbonization and pyrolysis in two agricultural soils. The 200‐ and 115‐day degradation correlated strongly with the O:C‐ and slightly with the H:C‐atomic ratio of 9 and 14 biochars, respectively. Highest temperature treatment and ash content did not show similar correlations.  相似文献

Summary Ware potatoes were produced from true potato seed by transplanting seedlings to the field in different growing periods to evaluate environmental constraints of this production method in the Nile delta. In the autumn season, with high temperatures and long-day conditions during seedling culture in the nursery and transplant establishment in the field, seedling development was fast, and transplants resumed growth within 5 days of transplanting in the field. Tuber yields ranged between 120 and 160 dt ha−1. In the spring season, with low temperatures and short-day conditions during the initial growing phase, seedling development in the nursery was slow and biomass partitioning between above ground organs (stems, leaves) and tubers was shifted towards the tubers. This partitioning was further enhanced by transplanting the seedlings in the field. Seedlings recovered only slowly from transplanting or died. It is concluded that potato production via transplants is poor in the spring season when premature tuberization of seedlings in the nursery leads to slow field establishment and low tuber yield.  相似文献

Abstract: An 11‐year‐old female spayed domestic shorthair cat was referred to The Ohio State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (OSU‐VTH) for evaluation of a 6 × 4 × 3.5 cm mass in the left midcervical region causing increased respiratory sounds and lateral deviation of the trachea. A fine needle aspirate of the mass was obtained before referral and the cytology results were compatible with a reactive lymph node. Immunocytochemistry showed increased numbers of CD3+ T lymphocytes and small numbers of CD20+ and CD79a+ medium to large lymphocytes. Differential diagnoses from the referral pathologist were T‐cell‐rich B‐cell lymphoma and feline Hodgkin's‐like lymphoma. A subsequent fine needle aspirate performed at the OSU‐VTH showed similar results. On flow cytometry the majority of cells were CD3+ T lymphocytes that were double positive for CD4 and CD8 (73%), compatible with either a double‐positive (CD4+CD8+) T‐cell lymphoma or lymphocytes from ectopic thymic tissue. The mass was surgically removed. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry of the mass revealed a predominant population of CD3+ small lymphocytes and small numbers of medium to large lymphocytes with moderate anisocytosis and anysokaryosis. A population of cytokeratin‐positive epithelial cells surrounded small microcystic structures filled with eosinophilic material and structures interpreted as Hassall's corpuscles. These findings were consistent with thymic tissue and a diagnosis of ectopic thymoma was made. PCR results for lymphocyte antigen receptor rearrangement (PARR) were negative. The cat had no evidence of disease 16 months after removal of the mass. To our knowledge this is the first report of an ectopic cervical thymoma in a cat. The clinical and diagnostic features of this unusual case will be useful in helping veterinarians and pathologists obtain a presurgical diagnosis and establish a prognosis for similar lesions.  相似文献
