Purpose

Water shortage in most countries of the southern Mediterranean basin has led to the reuse of municipal wastewater for irrigation. Despite numerous advantages for soil fertility and crop productivity, recycling wastewater in the soil also has several ecotoxicological and sanitary problems. To evaluate the chronic soil contamination and the cumulative impact of wastewater, we compared seven plot sites irrigated with treated wastewater 1, 2, 7, 9, 13, and 15 years and one nonirrigated taken as control, and these were sampled for soil analysis.

Materials and methods

Soil samples were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), total organic matter, and total concentrations of Cu, Zn, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Cd. Microbial biomass and enteric bacteria (fecal coliforms and fecal streptococci) were determined in all soil samples.

Results and discussion

The soil pH values were not consistently affected. Soil salinity, measured as EC, appeared significantly high and proportional to the duration of wastewater irrigation. Also, concentrations of total Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd increased significantly (P?≤?0.05) according to the number of irrigation years but are usually under Tunisian standards. The concentration of heavy metals (Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd) showed a significant decrease in the soil profile. The microbial biomass carbon (MBC) is 1.5 times larger in the soil irrigated for 15 years with treated wastewater as compared to the one taken as control. The growth of microorganisms might be explained by the ready source of easily degradable compounds in the oligotrophic soil environment brought about by wastewater irrigation. Soil bacteriological analysis showed that the number of fecal coliforms (FC) and that of fecal streptococci (FS) were affected appreciably (P?≤?0.05) by the duration of wastewater application (number of years) and by the soil depth (0–20, 20–40, and 40–60 cm).

Conclusions

Treated wastewater irrigation led to changes in physicochemical and microbiological soil properties. The magnitude and specificity of these changes significantly correlated with the duration of such practice. It can be concluded, based on these results, that the proper management of wastewater irrigation and periodic monitoring of soil fertility and quality parameters are required to ensure successful, safe, and long-term reuse of wastewater irrigation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The exploitation of phosphate mines generates an important quantity of phosphate sludge that remains accumulated and not valorized. In this context, composting with organic matter and rhizospheric microorganisms offers an interesting alternative and that is more sustainable for agriculture. This work aims to investigate the synergetic effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) and phospho-compost (PC), produced from phosphate-laundered sludge and organic wastes, and their combination on plant growth, phosphorus solubilization and phosphatase activities (alkaline and acid). Inoculated mycorrhizae and bacteria strains used in this study were selected from plant rhizosphere grown on phosphate-laundered sludge. Significant (p < .05) increases in plant growth was observed when inoculated with both consortia and PC (PC+ PSB+ AMF) similar to those recorded in plants amended with chemical fertilizer. Tripartite inoculated tomato had a significantly (p < .05) higher shoot height; shoot and root dry weight, root colonization and available P content, than the control. Co-inoculation with PC and AMF greatly increased alkaline phosphatase activity and the rate of mycorrhizal intensity. We conclude that PC and endophytic AMF and PSB consortia contribute to a tripartite inoculation in tomato seedlings and are coordinately involved in plant growth and phosphorus solubilization. These results open up promising prospects for using formulate phospho-compost enriched with phosphorus-solubilizing microorganisms (PSM) in crop cultivation as biofertilizers to solve problems of phosphate-laundered sludge accumulation.  相似文献

The diversity of 51 representative populations of the 5 Aegilops species from Moroccan collection was analyzed using 22 RAPD primers. We investigated the associations among these 5 Aegilops species (A. geniculata Roth (UUMM), A. triuncialis L. (UUCC), A. ventricosa Tausch (DDNN), A. peregrina (Hackel) Maire et Weiller (UUMM) and A. neglecta Req. ex Bert. subsp. recta (Zhuk.) K. Hammer (UUMMNN)); some diploid species considered as their ancestors; accessions of some neighboring countries and also accessions of Triticums. A total of 650 polymorphic RAPD fragments were amplified. A dendrogram was constructed using the un-weighed pair group method arithmetic average (UPGMA) and Jaccard`s similarity coefficient. The UPGMA clustering showed a regrouping to the level species with high level of the structuration of the diversity at A. geniculata. We confirm as reported by other authors, the proximity of N genome to U genome and C genome to M genome and also the difference between the genomes M and N. Thus, the phylogeny between the species and the different genomes were retracted.  相似文献

The probiotic properties of Bacillus strains isolated from Artemia culture and the effect of marine stress on viability and survival were investigated, as well as the changes occurring in their properties. Analyses showed that these bacteria corresponded to the genus Bacillus sp. Antagonism and adherence assays revealed that Bacillus strains have an inhibitory effect against tested pathogenic bacteria and are fairly adherent. Normal and starved cells showed different enzymatic profiles. Challenge tests performed with Artemia larvae provided evidence that the tested Bacillus strains were neither pathogenic nor toxic to the host and conferred protection for Artemia culture against pathogens. The tested strains maintained their viability and their probiotic properties during the period of study. The results suggest that the tested strains have suffered changes allowing them to survive in seawater in the absence of nutrients and outside their natural host, identifying them as potential probiotic candidates for Artemia culture.  相似文献

Using a local Algerian cultivar of chickpea, from 9 sites in Eastern Algeria, along a sub-humid to arid gradient, we isolated 60 nodulating isolates, among which 19 were assigned to Mesorhizobium species and 41 to Ensifer meliloti. Trapping revealed great differences among sites for their ability to induce nodules on plant, but no correlation with chemical and physical characterizations of soil samples could be found. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, 16S-23S IGS, recA, nodC and nifH sequences, Mesorhizobium isolates were assigned to at least 5 different species, among which one had never been described as nodulating chickpea before. The symbiotic diversity is conversely low, and shared by several species, reflecting horizontal gene transfer. The ability of Mesorhizobium genus to recombine and exchange symbiotic clusters among different species must play a great role in this ability to be associated with chickpea. The question to what extent the symbiotic species would end in this genus is discussed.  相似文献

Electrochemical polymerization of two different kinds of thiophene monomers on an iodine-covered gold surface created highly assembled conjugated copolymers with different electronic structures. A scanning tunneling microscope revealed images of several linkage types: diblock, triblock, and multiblock. The single strand of conjugated copolymers exhibited an anomalous swinging motion on the surface. This technique presents the possibility of understanding the copolymerization process from the different monomers on the single-molecular scale and of building single-molecule superlattices on a surface through controlled electropolymerization.  相似文献
