Summary Significant genetic variation in CO2 assimilation rate (A), stomatal conductance (g), and A: g ratio, which are indicators of intrinsic differences in productivity and water use efficiency (WUE), has been demonstrated in grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] hybrids. The primary objective was to determine the possible parental influence on the components of the A: g relationship in sorghum hybrids across a range of water supplies. Thirty F1 hybrids resulting from a 6 × 6 diallel crossing pattern constituted the genetic material. Field experiments were conducted using four water supply treatments established through differential irrigation. Carbon assimilation rate (A), g, and leaf water potential (w) of individual leaves were monitored every 15 to 20 days. Genetic analyses revealed that general- and specific-combining ability effects were evident for A. However, reciprocal and maternal effects were more important in governing the A-g and A-w relationships. Since the maternal effects were the major determinants in causing reciprocal differences, A can be improved by selecting specific female parents to exploit cytoplasmic factors or physiological characteristics of this parent. Substantial genetic variation in the A-g relationship resulting from significant genetic control of A offers the opportunity to impose selection for high A and stability of A, which might directly contribute to whole plant WUE and productivity in grain sorghum.Abbreviations A carbon assimilation rate - g stomatal conductance to water vapor - GCA General Combining Ability - SCA Specific Combining Ability - WUE Water Use Efficiency  相似文献

Nineteen wild emmer wheat [Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides (Körn.) Thell.] genotypes were evaluated for the grain concentrations of phosphorous (P), potassium (K), sulfur (S), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe) and cooper (Cu) under five different environments in Turkey and Israel. Each mineral nutrient has been investigated for the (1) genotype by environment (G × E) interactions, (2) genotype stability, (3) correlation among minerals and (4) mineral stability. Among the macronutrients analyzed, grain concentrations of Ca (range 338–2,034 mg kg?1) and S (range 0.18–0.43%) showed the largest variation. In the case of micronutrients, the largest variation was observed in the grain Mn concentration (range 13–87 mg kg?1). Grain concentrations of Fe and Zn also showed important variation (range 27–86 and 39–115 mg kg?1, respectively). Accessions with higher nutrient concentrations (especially Zn and Fe) had also greater grain weight, suggesting that higher grain Zn and Fe concentrations are not necessarily related to small grain size or weight. Analysis of variance showed that environment was the most important source of variation for K, S, Ca, Fe, Mn and Zn, explaining between 44 and 78% of the total variation and G × E explained between 20 and 40% of the total variation in all the minerals, except for S and Zn where its effect accounted for less than 16%. Genotype was the most important source of variation for Cu (explaining 38% of the total variation). However, genotype effect was also important for Mg, Mn, Zn and S. Sulfur and Zn showed the largest heritability values (77 and 72%, respectively). Iron exhibited low heritability and high ratio value between the G × E and genotype variance components \( \left( {\sigma_{\text{GE}}^{2} /\sigma_{G}^{2} } \right) \), suggesting that specific adaptation for this mineral could be positively exploited. The wild emmer germplasm tested in the current study revealed some outstanding accessions (such as MM 5/4 and 24-39) in terms of grain Zn and Fe concentrations and environmental stability that can be used as potential donors to enhance grain micronutrient concentrations in wheats.  相似文献

Modifying plant architecture is considered a promising breeding option to enhance crop productivity. Modern chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) cultivars with either compound (wild‐type) or simple leaf shapes are commercially grown but the relationships between leaf shape and yield are not well understood. In this study, a random sample of ‘Kabuli’ type progeny lines of both leaf types, derived from two crosses between modern American simple leaf cultivars and early‐flowering wild‐type breeding lines, were planted at different sowing densities. Leaf area development and final grain yield in genotypes of the two leaf types responded differently to changes in sowing densities. Compound leaf lines attained higher leaf area indices and higher grain yields at both low and high sowing densities. Yield responses of the simple leaf lines to increasing sowing density were significantly higher compared to compound leaf genotypes in two of three field experiments. The prospects for utilizing the simple leaf trait as a breeding target for short‐season growing areas are discussed.  相似文献

Canopy temperature has long been recognized as an indicator of plant water status, therefore, a high-resolution thermal imaging system was used to map crop water status. Potential approaches for estimating crop water status from digital infrared images of the canopy were evaluated. The effect of time of day on leaf temperature measurements was studied: midday was found to be the optimal time for thermal image acquisition. Comparison between theoretical and empirical approaches for estimating leaf water potential showed that empirical temperature baselines were better than those obtained from energy balance equations. Finally, the effects of angle of view and spatial resolution of the thermal images were evaluated: water status was mapped by using angular thermal images. In spite of the different viewing angles and spatial resolution, the map provided a good representation of the measured leaf water potential.  相似文献

Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) grown under winter conditions in unheated polyethylene covered greenhouse displays unmarketable red color fruit skin. The purpose of this work was to study the effect of potassium (K), phosphate and total salinity levels in the irrigation solution on the quality of eggplant fruit grown at winter and spring seasons. Eggplant was grown in containers filled with basalt erupted tuff scoria. The fertigation solutions were composed of three levels of P: 18, 36, and 54 g P m‐3, using mono K phosphate (MKP). Each level of P was applied on two levels of total K concentrations, 475 and 920 g K m‐3 composed of K nitrate, MKP, and K chloride (KCl). The KNO3 fertilizer was used in all treatments at 150 g N m‐3. Increasing the KCl concentration increased the average electrical conductivity (EC) in the irrigation solution from 2.3 to 3.9 dS m‐1, reduced class A fruit number and weight, but had no effect on the skin color. During the cold winter period the intensity of the skin color was weaker than in the normal hot growing period. Increasing the average phosphorus (P) concentration in the irrigation solution throughout the growing season from 36 to 54 g m‐3 increased the number of fruit per plant, the number of class A fruits but has no significant effect on total fruit yield. Increasing the total electrical conductivity of the nutrient solutions by K fertilizers above 3.8 dS m‐1 decreased fruit yield and total dry matter in the spring growth period.  相似文献

Despite advances in tissue culture techniques, propagation by leafy, softwood cuttings is the preferred, practical system for vegetative reproduction of many tree and shrub species. Species are frequently defined as ‘difficult’- or ‘easy-to-root’ when propagated by conventional cuttings. Speed of rooting is often linked with ease of propagation, and slow-to-root species may be ‘difficult’ precisely because tissues deteriorate prior to the formation of adventitious roots. Even when roots form, limited development of these may impair the establishment of a cutting.  相似文献

Summary A more thorough understanding of the biochemical basis of superior performance of one alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) genotype compared to another would expedite improvement in agronomically useful genotypes. Information on thermal dependence of glutathione reductase (GR, E.C. 1.6.4.2) in different ploidy levels of alfalfa is lacking. Our objective was to investigate the thermal dependency of GR in two genetically comparable populations of alfalfa at diploid and tetraploid levels. Thermal stability was similar for the enzyme from both populations, whereas variation was found for: i) the minimum apparent Km (0.53 and 4.14 M NADPH), ii) the temperature at which the minimum apparent Km was observed (15 and 25° C), and iii) the thermal kinetic windows (TKW) (the temperature range over which the apparent Km is within 200% of the observed minimum Km, 5 and 20° C width) in diploid and tetraploid alfalfa, respectively. The TKW data suggest that the diploid can perform optimally under a narrower (i.e. smaller TKW) and lower range (i.e. the temperature at which the lowest Km was observed) of temperatures, whereas the tetraploid can perform optimally under a wider range (i.e. larger TKW) of temperatures. ABSTRACT A leaf rust attacking Aegilops speltoides in its natural habitat is reported for the first time. It was found in two locations in northern and central Israel. The two collections from A. speltoides resemble wheat leaf rust, Puccinia triticina, in most spore dimensions, in the morphology of the substomatal vesicle of the urediniospore, and in DNA content in pycniospore nuclei. Similarly to P. triticina isolates from wheat, isolates taken from A. speltoides are compatible with Thalictrum speciosissimum as an aecial host and they are crossed easily with wheat leaf rust isolates. However, isolates from A. speltoides differ from wheat leaf rust in their telial host range. They are avirulent to cultivated wheat cultivars, but attack hundreds of A. speltoides accessions that were immune to wheat leaf rust. This distinct host preference justifies delineation of the newly found leaf rust as a forma specialis (f. sp. speltoides) within P. triticina.  相似文献

One of the major problems of confection sunflowers is low seed set. We studied the relationship between seed set and the origin of pollen, either self or cross, and the effects of stigmatic sprays of calcium nitrate, boric acid and polyphenols on seed set. In a screen-house experiment, seed set was analyzed for three predetermined regions in the sunflower capitulum: distal, median and proximal. Cross-pollination combined with calcium nitrate or boric acid spray significantly improved seed set in the distal region compared with cross-pollination alone or with cross-pollination combined with self-pollination. Neither spray had a significant effect on seed set in the median or proximal regions. Cross-pollination of the proximal region only, with either fresh pollen or 24-h-old pollen, did not improve seed set compared with cross-pollination of the whole capitulum. We found no direct link between pollen germination on the stigma and seed set. However, each region of the capitulum responded differently to self- or cross-pollination. In two open-field experiments, stigmatic applications of calcium nitrate significantly increased seed set by approximately 9% compared with open pollination alone, while stigmatic applications of polyphenols significantly increased seed set by approximately 9% only once, suggesting that commercial yields may be increased by using similar applications.  相似文献
