This experiment was carried out in a mature (>100-year-old) eastern beech forest in the Eastern Black Sea Region (BSR) of Turkey. The effects of experimental practices to control the woody plant Rhododendron flavum Don., including grubbing, manual cutting, and foliar and cut-stump spraying with imazapyr and triclopyr, were assessed on understory and forest floor biomass and nutrients, as well as soil bulk density and nutrient content. The cut plots had 5, 15, and 38 times greater competing vegetation biomass than did the plots treated with triclopyr, grubbing, and imazapyr, respectively. Because of the increased biomass, the amount of understory N, P, Ca, K, S, and Mg content on the cut plots was also substantially higher when compared to the grubbed, imazapyr-treated, and triclopyr-treated plots. Triclopyr and imazapyr applications brought about two- and threefold greater dead organic matter on the forest floor than did cutting and grubbing, respectively. As a result, forest floor macronutrient contents on the imazapyr- and triclopyr-treated plots were significantly greater than on the cut plots. Five years after treatments, soil bulk density at the 10–20 cm depth on the imazapyr-sprayed plots was about 14% higher than that on other treatments. Herbicides, especially imazapyr and grubbing were effective in controlling rhododendron. Macronutrients stored in the rhododendron were released to the forest floor after vegetation was controlled with herbicides.  相似文献

The importance of understanding effects of stand dynamics on growth as they relate to identifying and evaluating forest declines is discussed. Decline diseases and some of their characteristics are reviewed, as are general patterns of normal growth and development of forest trees and stands. The need to develop an expectation of normal growth is discussed and a minimally sufficient set of growth stratifying factors; namely, site quality, stand density and age, is proposed.  相似文献

Patterns of fine root biomass, production, and distribution were estimated for pure stands and mixtures of three-year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) with red maple (Acer rubrum L.) or black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) on the Virginia Piedmont to determine the role of fine roots in interference between pine and hardwood tree species. Estimates were based on amounts of live and dead fine roots separated from monthly core samples during the third growing season after planting. Live and dead fine root biomass and production varied by species, but mixtures of loblolly pine and black locust generally had greater fine root biomass and fine root production than pure stands or loblolly pine-red maple mixtures. Hardwood species had greater live fine root biomass per tree in mixtures with pine compared to pure stands. Greater live fine root biomass in pine-locust stands may be attributed to differential utilization of the soil volume by fine roots of these species. For all stands, approximately 50% of live five root biomass was located in the upper 10 cm of soil.  相似文献

Herbaceous weeds present amajor obstacle to foresters in the earlyestablishment and growth of Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.), an important coniferof the semi-arid Mediterranean region. Greatgenetic variability of this pine species indrought resistance has already beenwell-studied. The existence of such variationwithin this species in relation to herbaceousweed competition is unknown. This studyinvestigated the effect of herbaceous weedcompetition on the growth of the seedlings ofTurkish red pine seed sources with differentmoisture regimes in their native sites, usingthe rapid screening technique. Two-month-oldTurkish red pine seedlings were grown inindividual pots in a glasshouse either with orwithout joint goose goat grass (Aegilopscylindrica L.). After two simulatedgrowing seasons, grass competitionsignificantly and progressively reduced pinegrowth. Although mean total pine biomass wasreduced by 71% due to weed competition,seedlings of different pine seed sourcesdisplayed significant differences in growthresponses to the weed treatments: dry site seedsource seedlings generally exhibitedsignificantly greater growth than moist siteseed source seedlings under weed competition. These results suggest that competition fromherbaceous weeds is an important factor inreducing the early growth of Turkish red pineseedlings, and that selection ofcompetition-tolerant seed sources can result insubstantial enhancement of the competitivestatus of this pine species against itsherbaceous competitors in early years.  相似文献

The effect of sulfometuron (Oust) on the root growth of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings was studied in the field and in two soil types in the greenhouse. In the greenhouse study sulfometuron was applied to the foliage only, the soil only, and to both foliage and soil at the rates of 0.10, 0.21, and 0.42 kg ai/ha. Twenty-eight days after application root growth significantly decreased for all methods of application and with increasing rates e.g., 0.10, 0.21, and 0.42 kg ai/ha sulfometuron reduced new root length by 42%, 53%, and 64%, respectively. Application in the field at the rate of 0.30 kg ai/ha resulted in a 68% reduction in root growth. However, by the end of the growing season treated seedling root and shoot biomass were 115% and 64% greater, respectively. To ensure earlier season survival the rate of sulfometuron applied should be kept at a minimum level that will allow both weed control and adequate root growth. Low rates would be particularly important during a dry planting season.  相似文献

Because purple-flowered rhododendron (Rhododendron ponticum L.) and yellow-flowered rhododendron (R. flavum Don.) significantly reduce seedling growth and regeneration of eastern beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) as well as local floristic diversity in northern Turkey, effective and cost-efficient woody control is needed. Various manual (cut and grub) and herbicide (foliar and cut-stump spray) woody control techniques were used in two different beech-rhododendron sites in the Black Sea Region (BSR) of Turkey. Two years later, biological and economic effectiveness were substantially greater with foliar-applied herbicide and grubbing treatments than with the cutting, cut-stump, and check treatments. Yet, grubbing showed a great potential for sprout crown reduction. Cut-stump spray was intermediate in effectiveness. Cutting had the least woody control and economic effectiveness among all of the treatments. Foliar-applied Arsenal SL (imazapyr) had significantly greater rhododendron control than foliar-appliied Garlon 4 (triclopyr ester). Increasing rates did not enhance herbicide efficacy. Reducing rates further may provide the same level of control at less cost.  相似文献

Plant interactions can be defined as the ways plants act uponthe growth, fitness, survival and reproduction of other plants,largely by modifying their environment. These interactions canbe positive (facilitation) or negative (competition or exploitation).During plantation establishment or natural forest regenerationafter a disturbance, high light levels and, sometimes, increasedavailability of water and nutrients favour the development ofopportunistic, fast-growing herbaceous and woody species whichcapture resources at the expense of crop trees. As a consequence,the growth and survival of crop trees can be dramatically reduced.Although the effects of this competition are well documented,the physical and physiological mechanisms of competition arenot. Moreover, the competition process is never constant intime or space. We present a conceptual competition model basedon plant growth forms common in global forests, i.e. graminoids,forbs, small shrubs, large shrubs and mid-storey trees, andmain-storey trees. Their competitive attributes and successionaldynamics are examined. An overview is presented on the way forestvegetation management (FVM) treatments influence these componentsand outcomes regarding crop tree performance and diversity conservation.Finally, a synthesis of literature yields FVM guidelines forefficiently optimizing crop tree performance and safeguardingdiversity.
