Toxic effects of aluminium (Al) on root tips are considered to decrease export of cytokinins to shoots, and deficiency of cytokinins has been made responsible for Al‐induced inhibition of shoot growth. But no experimental data on the influence of Al on endogenous cytokinin levels in higher plants have been reported. In this study, the endogenous levels of zeatin riboside (ZR) and dihydrozeatin riboside (DHZR) of roots, stems, and leaves of two bean cultivars (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv Contender and cv Strike) exposed to Al in continuously flowing nutrient solution (pH 4.5) was analysed. The supply of a high Al concentration (sum of monomeric Al species, 127 μM) caused severe inhibition of root elongation in both cultivars. The cv Strike was more affected by both Al‐induced mineral nutrient disorders and Al‐induced alteration of leaf water relationships. In both cultivars Al‐supply significantly increased ZR and DHZR. Leaves of Al‐treated plants exhibited a more than three times higher concentration of ribosylated cytokinins than controls. Nevertheless, stomatal resistance was significantly increased by Al in both cultivars. Our results support the hypothesis that Al affects plants not by inducing deficiency of cytokinins but of some other factor necessary for the manifestation of cytokinin action.  相似文献

Glutathione (GSH) and phenolics play an important role in plant defense against metal‐ion toxicity. The antioxidant activity and metal‐binding capacity of these compounds can account for the protective effects. In contrast to animal‐cell models, however, the possible interplay among these substances in stress defense of plants is poorly investigated. This study compares the influence of cadmium (Cd) on the profiles of both soluble phenolics and GSH in shoots of different Thlaspi and Noccaea species: two ecotypes of the nonhyperaccumulator T. arvense differing in Cd resistance (ecotype Aigues Vives, Cd‐sensitive, and ecotype Jena, Cd‐resistant) and two Cd‐tolerant Cd‐Zn hyperaccumulators N. praecox and N. caerulescens (formerly Thlaspi praecox and T. caerulescens). To reveal the possible influence of Cd‐induced sulfur (S) shortage on the stress response, plants receiving normal S concentrations (500 μM MgSO4) and plants treated with surplus S (500 μM MgSO4 + 500 μM K2SO4) were analyzed. Our working hypothesis was that species differences in tolerance to high tissue Cd concentrations should be reflected by differences in endogenous levels of GSH and phenolic compounds. The results reveal clear species‐dependent differences in both the constitutive patterns and the Cd‐ and S‐induced changes in shoot concentrations of GSH and phenolics. However, no simple relationship between these shoot concentrations and Cd accumulation and tolerance can be established.  相似文献

The influence of light intensity on the effects of 10–6 mol L–1 99Tc on growth, chlorophyll and carotenoid contents of bush bean plants was investigated. After germination and cotyledon excision, the plants were grown in a growth chamber either under low light (photosynthetic active radiation, PAR 144 E m–2 s–1) or higher light (PAR 307 E M–2 s–1) conditions. In plants grown under the higher light conditions, 99Tc hardly affected CO2-assimilation, dark respiration, pigment contents and growth. No toxicity symptoms were observed in these plants. Under low light conditions, 99T c significantly decreased growth and the concentration of chlorophylls. Toxicity symptoms in the form of chlorosis and necrosis developed. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations revealed alterations of chloroplast ultrastructure comparable to those described for plants slightly affected by paraquat toxicity or by Mo-deficiency. Our results indicate that in the low light plants 99Tc induces damage in chloroplasts by peroxidation of membrane lipids.  相似文献

The influence of different zinc (Zn) concentrations (1.5 to 1500 μM) on organic acid levels in roots and shoots of the Zn‐hyperaccumulator plant Thlaspi caerulescens was investigated. In shoots, malate was the most abundant organic acid (164 to 248 μmol/g f.w.), followed by citrate, succinate, and oxalate. A significant correlation between soluble Zn and both malate and oxalate was observed in shoots, but not in roots. In shoots, a significant correlation between inorganic cation equivalents and organic acid anion equivalents was found. These observations and the finding, that organic acid concentrations were high even under suboptimal Zn supply (1.5 μM) suggest that in T. caerulescens the high organic acid concentration in shoots is a constitutive property. The variation of the organic acid concentrations seem to be a consequence of the cation‐anion balance rather than a specific Zn tolerance mechanism. The constitutively high organic acid concentration may be responsible for the high Zn and iron (Fe) tissue concentrations required for optimum growth in T. caerulescens.  相似文献

? Context

Mechanical wood properties are increasingly relevant for structural applications and are influenced by growing space availability. Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) has an increasing market share in Europe and is mainly processed to sawn timber.

? Aim

A sample of 164 thinning trees was taken from two Douglas-fir long-term forestry research plots in Germany. The end-use quality of about 2,000 side and center boards was analyzed as a function of initial plant density (1,000, 2,000, and 4,000 trees per hectare) and log position within the stem.

? Methods

Sawn timber quality was described by knottiness, density, modulus of elasticity, and strength. Explanatory parameters were radial position, longitudinal position, and initial plant density. All boards were strength graded visually and by the grading machine GoldenEye-706 using both X-rays for detecting densities and size as well as position of knots and laser interferometry for detecting eigenfrequency (DIN 4074, DIN 2012; EN 14081-2, CEN 2010).

? Results

High plant density led to better mechanical sawn timber quality. Significant differences were especially observed between 1,000 and 2,000 trees per hectare. The yield of machine strength-graded center boards of strength class C24 increased from 50 to 89 % at low and high initial plant density, respectively.

? Conclusion

Foresters are able to improve end-product quality by controlling planting density in particular. The roundwood price that foresters get should be based on the proportion of higher strength classes within logs to give incentives for a more quality-oriented forest management.  相似文献

In short‐term (24 h) nutrient solution experiments, the influence of different proton (pH 6.0 and pH 4.3) and aluminium (Al) (0, 20, and 50 μM) concentrations on root and coleoptile elongation, dry weight, and the uptake of selected mineral nutrients was studied in maize (Zea mays L.) varieties that differ in acid soil tolerance under field conditions. The acid‐soil‐tolerant maize varieties, Adour 250 and C525M, proved to be hydrogen (H+) ion sensitive, but Al tolerant, while the acid soil tolerant variety BR201F was H+ tolerant but Al sensitive. The acid soil sensitive variety HS 7777 was affected by both H+ and Al toxicity. The proton‐induced inhibition of root elongation was closely related to the proton‐induced decrease of the specific absorption rates (SAR) of boron (B), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), and phosphorus (P). In contrast, only the specific absorption rate of B (SARB) was significantly correlated to the Al‐induced inhibition of root elongation. It is concluded, that alterations of nutrient uptake may play an important role in H+ toxicity, while at least after short‐term exposure to Al, alterations of Ca, Fe, Mg, or P uptake do not seem to be responsible for Al‐induced inhibition of root elongation. Further attention deserves the Al‐B interaction, moreover taking into account that a highly significant correlation between Al‐induced increase of callose concentration in root tips and Al‐induced decrease of SARB could be established.  相似文献

One of the pivotal objectives in forestry research is to estimate the response of silvicultural target variables to climate change scenarios at high temporal resolution in order to consider within-year feedbacks between growth and environmental conditions. To meet this challenge, models are needed which support and complement the widely used observation-based decision systems in forest management and consulting. Physiological models in particular provide the fundamental prerequisites to reflect the impact of various simultaneously changing environmental conditions. However, a physiological representation at the individual tree level is computationally very expensive and sensitive to uncertain initializations. We thus propose an approach that combines a modern representative of the physiological cohort model type, MoBiLE-PSIM, with the individual tree competition concept of a distance-dependent empirical growth simulator (SILVA). The resulting hybrid provides a key feature for the consideration of forest management in long-term simulations at high computational efficiency. The extended model was evaluated with growth-diameter distributions obtained from core-boring at two beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forest sites in south-west Germany that differ in exposure and soil conditions. The mean bias of annual stand-scale growth from 2001 to 2007 decreased from ?0.59 to ?0.41 mm at one evaluation plot and from ?0.55 to ?0.24 mm at the other when the competition module was coupled in. Inclusion of the SILVA-based individual tree module into MoBiLE-PSIM improved the size-dependent representation of competition and growth on five-year and even annual timescale. This was particularly the case where the spatial distribution of dominant trees was clustered.  相似文献
