Acid, sandy soils selected for blueberry production are usually deficient in plant available phosphorus. Fertilizer addition at planting has not been a recommended practice. This research was designed to evaluate potted blueberry (Vaccinium ashei Reade) plant growth response to P applied at establishment and interacted with N applied during the growing season. Four liter containerized ‘Tifblue’ rabbiteye blueberry plants were transplanted into 4.4 kg of 1:1 v/v loamy sand:peat mixture in an 8‐liter container. Preplant P was incorporated into the mixture at 0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 kg/ha rates. Nitrogen was split‐applied post‐plant four times at 60‐day intervals beginning 30 days after blueberry bushes were transplanted. Total N rates were equivalent to 0, 112, 224, or 336 kg/ha. Plants were harvested 270 days after transplanting. Phosphorus at the 60 and 80 kg/ha rates increased plant growth 40 and 31%, respectively. Plant growth responded linearly to increasing N rate. Leaf and stem weight increases contributed to this linear response while root weight was not affected by fertilizer N. Total plant dry weight was increased by N rates at the 60 and 80 kg/ha P levels. Phosphorus applications increased leaf P levels, but did not increase soil test P. Leaf redness, caused by cool temperatures, was reduced by high N rates. The optimum P rate for fertilization of the soilrpeat mixture in the planting hole under conditions of this experiment was the equivalent of 60 kg/ha.  相似文献

To address tree–soil–crop interactions in the Sahel, we examined the growth-limiting factors (water, light and mineral nutrients) of Sorghum bicolor growing under trees in agroforestry parklands of Burkina Faso. Growth and yields of sorghum were measured after (1) pruning crowns of Vitellaria paradoxa and Parkia biglobosa trees, and (2) applying mineral fertilizers (nitrogen and/or phosphorus) and supplemental irrigation during normal wet cropping seasons in 2007 and 2008. Irrigation treatments led to non-significant 29% and 23% gains in grain and dry matter yields (from control values of 455 and 1,140 kg ha−1), respectively. The fertilizer showed variable but in general significant increases in grain and straw yields and more consistently in the height of sorghum plants. The crown pruning increased the values of these variables much more strongly, by 520% and 348% (from control, no-pruning values of 282 and 612 kg ha−1), respectively. The growth and production of S. bicolor were also >56% higher under V. paradoxa than under P. biglobosa. The same trends were observed in both cropping seasons, although rainfall was much heavier in 2008 than in 2007, and the mean sorghum grain yield was approximately twice as high in 2008. The results clearly indicate that competition for light limits sorghum growth more than competition for other resources in the studied system, suggesting that parkland management should aim at either increasing light availability (by reducing tree density or pruning) or growing shade-tolerant crops under the trees. However, use of a poorly soluble phosphorus source during the first year, modest amount of water applied through the supplemental irrigation (48 mm) and the wetness of the rainy season in 2008 (which led to abandonment of the irrigation treatments and floods in the experimental plots) may have masked possible effects of the applied fertilizers and irrigation. Therefore, more prolonged analyses of the effects of fertilizers and deficit irrigation are required before robust recommendations can be made to farmers.  相似文献

Vitellaria paradoxa C.F.Gaertn. is one of the most economically and socially important tree species in the Sudano-Sahelian region. Little is known of the pattern of variation within its natural range. Eight populations covering most of the natural range from Senegal to Uganda were sampled and leaves of 118 individual trees were collected. An analysis of molecular diversity was carried out using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Fifteen random primers generated 67 polymorphic and 15 monomorphic RAPD loci ranging from size 1670 bp to 280 bp. Shannon's diversity index varied from Central Africa/Ndele (0.374) to Uganda/Amoya (0.350) but the differences between populations were smaller than the population standard errors. Correspondence analysis of unrooted neighbour-joining trees suggested that genetic distances between populations were correlated with geographic distances. This trend was confirmed by a Mantel test giving a coefficient of correlation between genetic and geographic distances of R = 0.88 (P = 0.0001). Result of AMOVA (analyses of molecular variance) showed that 14.8% (P = 0.002) of the RAPD variation was distributed among populations. Nested analysis of variance indicated that variance between the western and eastern groups of population represented 8.7% (P = 0.001) of the total variation and the variation amongst populations within group was 9.5% (P = 0.001). Eighty two percent of the variation was explained by variation amongst individuals within populations. The origin of genetic structure and level of diversity may be explained by the glacial refugia, the biological traits of Vitellaria paradoxa and by the impact of semi-domestication. Based on these results, sampling options of the natural populations are suggested for in or ex situ conservation. For the development of Vitellaria paradoxa breeding population, the sampling should consist of many individual trees selected within a few populations to capture a large proportion of variation. This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Pot experiments were conducted in a nursery in 2008 in Mali to study the effect of mycorrhizal symbionts on the growth and root infection of Ziziphus mauritiana and Tamarindus indica seedlings in unsterile soils. Three treatments were used and consisted of two types of inoculum (Glomus aggregatum, G. fasciculatum) and an uninoculated control. The seedlings were non-destructively assessed each month, and an additional, destructive harvest was made, after 6 and 10?months for Z. mauritiana and T. indica respectively. Mycorrhizal inoculation had a more positive impact on the growth of Z. mauritiana than on T. indica. G. aggregatum significantly (P?<?0.01) improved the growth of Z. mauritiana seedlings. However, the growth of T. indica seedlings was significantly better in the control compared to the two types of inoculum used. This indicates that unsterile nursery soil may contain effective mycorrhizal propagules. The mean percentage of infection of Z. mauritiana seedlings (74%) was significantly higher than that of T. indica (57%). We conclude that mycorrhizal inoculation can improve both mycorrhizal infection and growth of Z. mauritiana seedlings in unsterile nursery soils.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to evaluate variability in fruit characteristics and nutritional quality of Baobab fruits with the aim of providing the background to select trees bearing fruit with desirable characteristics for further utilisation. Vitamin C, total sugar and ash contents were assessed in 178 Baobab fruit samples from 11 sites in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. Furthermore the following tree and fruit physical characteristics were recorded: tree height, bark colour, fruit size, pulp weight, seed weight, seed size and pulp colour. The content (mean?±?SD) of vitamin C was 4.78?±?1.02?g?kg?1, sugar 514?±?72?g?kg?1 and fruit weight 293?±?96?g. There was a significant correlation between annual precipitation of the tree population site and vitamin C content but not with sugar content. For sugar, there were significant positive correlations with latitude and longitude. Negative correlations were found between fruit size and both longitude and latitude with smaller fruits generally being found to the north/east. No relation was found between pulp or bark colour and the sugar or vitamin C content. The contents of protein, lipid, carbohydrates, ash and moisture in the seeds ranged from 156 to 159, 143 to 150, 641 to 652, 44 to 49 and 50 to 55.7?g?kg?1 respectively. The variation for vitamin C and sugar found within populations is a first indication that valuable gains could be made by selection of superior trees.  相似文献

We implemented a regression-based method between pairwise relatedness estimated from markers and phenotypic similarity to estimate heritability of traits related to leaf size and morphology in a wild tree population (Vitellaria paradoxa C.F. Gaertn.: shea tree). We then compared the results with heritability estimated with a classical pedigree-based method. We tested both approaches in an agroforestry population of this tree species, a very important one and abundant in the Sudano-Sahelian zone of Africa. Twelve microsatellite loci were used to estimate pairwise relatedness after selection of estimator coefficients based on Monte Carlo simulation. The regression-based method applied to 200 individuals did not display a significant trend with physical distance between trees for relatedness as well as for actual variance of relatedness. In consequence, estimates of narrow-sense heritability of traits related to leaf size were not significant. The pedigree-based method using a progeny test with 39 families and 15 individuals per family from the same population showed high and significant estimates of narrow-sense heritability for the same traits (h2 = 0.36–0.95), demonstrating a marked genetic variation within the population. This discrepancy between methods stresses the poor performance of the molecular marker-based method. This can be explained by the absence of fine-scale structure within the agroforestry population of shea trees, other parameters being consistent with recommended values. The regression-based method does not seem well adapted to the agroforestry tree population. New experiments in tree populations and theoretical approaches are needed to evaluate the real potential of the marker-based methods.  相似文献

The morphological responses of seedlings of eight African provenances of Vitellaria paradoxa (Shea tree or Karité) to imposed draught stress were compared under nursery experimental conditions. The potted seedlings were subjected to three different watering regimes (87 days after sowing): no water stress (100% of the field capacity, C), moderate water stress (75% of C) and severe water stress (50% of C). Before the application of the stress, we observed genotypical differences in the morphological variables at the scale of leaves and of above-ground parts. The six-month water stress affected aerial growth: all provenances responded to drought by down-regulating growth (in height and in diameter), leaf number and area. Katawki provenance of Uganda performed relatively poorly, possibly of it being a nilotica subspecies, contrary to the others (paradoxa subspecies). There was a lack of correlation between climate of seeds origin, seed characteristics, seeds germination and survival rate of seedlings. The study confirmed the importance of leaf area in the vigor of the initial growth in this species. Thus, Tamale and Karaba provenances performed better than other West African provenances due to their larger leaf area, which was found to be a determining factor of relative growth in height at the seedling stage.  相似文献

Lack of data on water use of key species of drylands constitutes an obstacle to understanding their role in hydrological processes in this environment. To elucidate seasonal variation in water consumption by Vitellaria paradoxa, the dominant species of parklands of the semi-arid areas of West Africa, we’ve measured its transpiration using heat ratio method (HRM) and seven potential explanatory variables. Sap flux was found to be significantly different among years with 0.64, 0.59 and 0.67 L h?1 dm?2 in 2008, 2009 and 2010, respectively. Sap flux was significantly higher in the dry (0.73 L h?1 dm?2) than in the wet season (0.53 L h?1 dm?2). Nighttime sap flux during dry season (0.48 L h?1 dm?2) was significantly higher than that of the wet season (0.20 L h?1 dm?2) and it contributes on average to 26% of daily sap flow with a maximum reaching 49%. The mean transpiration rate per tree was 151 L day?1 and all measured variables except rainfall and soil water content were significantly correlated with sap flux. These correlations were stronger (higher R value) during the rainy than in the dry season. Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) explained the highest proportion of sap flux variation and their curve was of parabolic type (R2 = 0.54) indicating that V. paradoxa can probably down-regulate its canopy conductance beyond a certain threshold of VPD, which is about 3 kPa in the present study. Future studies should investigate such hypothesis as well as the impacts of the variation of V. paradoxa transpiration due to climatic variables on hydrological cycles.  相似文献

This review will discuss the current state of the human HIV-1 vaccine trials including the safety consideration of vaccine composition and difficulties in determining and defining protective immunity and epitopes to HIV-1. Vaccines in animal models of lentivirus infection are compared. In particular, the findings from the prototype FIV vaccine and the HIV-1 protein immunizations studies in cats are discussed, as well as the resulting research regarding a potential HIV-1 vaccine design based on evolutionarily conserved T-cell epitopes.  相似文献
