Seed of the Swedish lucerne variety U 0615 harvested in a seed field in Israel for four consecutive seasons was tested in field trials in Sweden. Differences in seed yield between plants were demonstrated in Israel — less winter-dormant plants gave more than four times as much seed as winter-dormant plants. On the average Israel-grown seed yielded less in the first cut than Swedish-grown seed, which indicates a decrease in winter-hardiness. The yield was especially reduced in 1962 when winter damage was severe. It is pointed out that varieties may react differently when seed is produced outside the area of adaptation. In a variety with a high degree of heterogeneity, e.g. U 0615, the mode of increase and the stage to be multiplied at southern latitudes should be tested carefully before it is undertaken commercially.Swedish Seed Association, Uppsala 1, Sweden.The Hebrew University, Faculty of Agriculture, Rehovot, Israel.  相似文献

Effects of zinc sulfate (0 vs 1,142 ppm supplemental zinc from zinc sulfate) and feeding frequency (1 x vs 12x daily) on ruminal protozoa numbers, fermentation patterns and amino acid passage were investigated using four ruminally and abomasally cannulated mature Jersey steers in a 4 x 4 Latin square experiment. Steers (530 kg) were fed a 50:50 roughage:concentrate diet at 1.5 times their NEm requirement. Experimental periods were 14 d in duration; ruminal, abomasal and fecal samples were collected at 6-h intervals during the last 3 d of each period. Protozoa numbers tended to be lowest (1.82 x 10(6)/ml) in steers fed zinc 1 x and tended to be highest (3.83 x 10(6)/ml) in steers fed zinc 12 x daily (P less than .10). Frequent feeding decreased ruminal pH .24 units and increased total VFA 20.7%, ammonia 22.7% and ruminal digestion of dietary amino acids (AA) 61.6% (P less than .05). Zinc supplementation decreased ruminal digestion of dietary AA 35.8% (P less than .05) and the abomasal passage of bacterial OM and AA 21.2% (P less than .05) and increased ruminal output of amino acids as a percentage of intake 15.1% (P less than .05). Although it increased escape of dietary AA, zinc sulfate decreased postruminal passage of bacterial AA and resulted in a net negative effect on total postruminal AA passage as a percentage of intake. The effects of zinc on ruminal AA digestion may be more closely related to an interaction of zinc with dietary CP rather than to an effect of Zn on ruminal microbial populations.  相似文献

The aqueous extract of Crinum giganteum given intraperitoneally at doses of 6.25, 12.5 and 25 mg/kg in rats prolonged the duration of pentobarbital sleeping time and in mice reduced spontaneous motor activity, decreased the exploratory activity and attenuated amphetamine-induced stereotype behavior. The intraperitoneal and oral preliminary LD(50) in mice were found to be 627 and 1468 mg/kg, respectively. The data obtained suggest that the aqueous extract of C. giganteum contains some biologically active principles with sedative activity.  相似文献

Ozone (O3) dissolved in seawater (ODS) was evaluated, as an egg disinfectant, on the spawn of captive gilthead sea bream, Sparus aurata, brood stock. Four contact times (CT) were tested (0.6, 1.2, 2.4 and 4.8 mg min L−1) where CT was calculated by multiplying the dissolved O3 concentration (0.3 mg L−1) by different exposure periods (2, 4, 8, 16 min). There was also a disinfected seawater treatment that contained no O3 or derived compounds (CT 0) and an untreated seawater control. All ODS treatments reduced egg surface bacterial counts to zero, which was significantly (P<0.05) lower than the CT 0 and the control groups (194 and 1320 plate−1 respectively). Nevertheless, the hatching rate was high in the control and the CT treatments 0, 0.6 and 1.2 (88.7%, 87.3%, 89.5% and 83.7% respectively) while eggs exposed to a CT 2.4 and 4.8 hatched poorly (36.5% and 20.4% respectively), which was likely due, at least in part, to larvae unable to break the egg chorion successfully. Swim‐bladder inflation was significantly higher in the ODS groups (>97%) compared with the control and CT 0 treatments (ca. 70%). The results suggest that a 2‐min exposure of eggs to 0.3 mg O3 L−1 of ODS (CT 0.6) would improve current protocols in marine larviculture.  相似文献

Fifty-four crossbred steers (275 kg) were assigned randomly to one of three isoenergetic but not isonitrogenous ruminal escape protein (EP) supplements: high ruminal escape protein (HEP), low ruminal escape protein (LEP), or corn. The supplements contained corn, distillers' dried grains with solubles (DDGS), and fish meal. Supplements were fed at approximately 1.5 kg/d; the HEP and LEP supplements provided .25 and .12 kg more EP per day than corn, respectively. These supplements also supplied .20 and .10 kg more CP per day than corn. Fish meal and DDGS provided 66.7 and 33.3% of the supplemental EP, respectively. One-half of the steers in each supplement treatment were implanted once with 36 mg of zeranol. Steers grazed wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)-annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) pastures for 73 d (March 1 to May 12). Daily gains (kg/d) increased linearly (P less than .07) as EP increased (HEP, 1.61; LEP, 1.54; corn, 1.47); responses were apparent only during the later periods as forage quality declined. Zeranol implants increased (P less than .02) ADG (kg/d) by 9.7% (1.58 vs 1.44). After grazing, all cattle were fed a finishing ration for 76 d. Pre-feedlot EP level produced a negative linear (P less than .04) response on feedlot ADG (kg/d) (HEP, 1.44; LEP, 1.50; corn, 1.59). Zeranol implantation during the grazing phase did not affect (P greater than .2) performance during the feedlot phase or carcass characteristics other than increased ribeye area (P less than .08). Human lymphocytes treated with neuraminidase (from Vibrio cholera) are more susceptible to lysis with antiserums directed against HL-A antigens in the cytotoxicity test than are the corresponding cells incubated in buffer. Enzymetreated cells are also lysed by antibodies other than those directed against HL-A, but control cells are not. The extra sensitivity to antibody disappears after 2 to 6 days in tissue culture.  相似文献
