Arid areas are highly sensitive to climate change and are ideal model systems to study the potential impact of climate change on species' community structure. Biological soil crust (BSC) formation plays an ecological role in a number of key processes in the development of dry ecosystems. It was hypothesized that BSC succession and function are affected by aridity level and limited by rainfall. Furthermore, it is possible to infer the direction of the BSC succession based on aridity level, and the latter can imitate future climate change scenarios. The objectives of this study were to investigate the microbial biomass and diversity of the BSC structure in three sites differing in aridity level (semiarid, arid and hyper-arid), by combining physical and biophysiological measurements with 16S rRNA gene fragment and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analyses. Physical and biophysiological parameters of the BSC were significantly influenced by aridity level. Total protein and polysaccharide contents were strongly correlated with total PLFA-based microbial biomass. Gram-positive biomarkers and microbial biomass were significantly higher in the wettest (semiarid) site than in the driest (hyper-arid) one. Multivariate-analysis based ordination of the PLFA data segregated the cluster of semiarid data from that of the hyper-arid site, while data from the arid site were dispersed between the two. The phylogenetic distribution of prominent 16S rRNA bacterial gene sequences along the aridity levels was in agreement with the PLFA analysis: the hyper-arid site was dominated by the cyanobacterium Microcoleus vaginatus, while diverse populations of cyanobacteria and soil bacteria were found in the other sites. These complementary tools allowed a simple and sensitive measurement of the influence of aridity levels on BSC successional stage. The results demonstrate that different aridity levels correspond to different BSC successional stages and those differences can be used as parameters for global change scenarios.  相似文献

1. Saline (10 microliters), norepinephrine (NE) and Serotonin (5-HT), 500 nmol each, were injected into the anterior third ventricle (A3V; n = 7) or the posterior third ventricle (P3V; n = 11) of ananesthetised, unrestrained White Leghorn cockerels. Plasma arginine vasotocin (AVT) and mesotocin (MT) were measured 20, 60 and 120 min after injection. 2. Injection of NE into both the A3V and P3V had no significant effect on either plasma AVT or plasma MT at any of the sampling times. 3. Administration of 5-HT into the A3V significantly increased plasma MT about two-fold 20 min following injection. At 120 min time, plasma MT returned to normal. 4. In P3V birds, 5-HT had no effect on plasma MT in the first 20 min, but a significant increase in plasma MT occurred 60 to 120 min after injection. The magnitude of the response was lower than in the A3V cockerels. 5. Plasma AVT was not affected by 5-HT administration into the A3V at any of the sampling times, but 5-HT administration into the P3V caused significant rises in plasma AVT at 120 min. 6. Serotonergic, but not noradrenergic, induction of neurohypophysial peptide secretion was demonstrated.  相似文献

Harvesting plays a major role in the virgin olive oil production line, being the most expensive single component, but also due to its significant effect on the whole year's produce. Previous studies have focused on the effects of harvest timing on either oil yield or quality. Here we determined the separate and combined effects of harvesting date, fruit maturation, cultivar and fruit load on olive oil quality and quantity. Cultivars typical to the Middle East region were selected: the traditional cv. Souri and the newer cv. Barnea, grown under intensive conditions. The results demonstrate fundamental differences between the two cultivars with respect to harvest strategy. In high-yielding ‘Barnea’, oil accumulation continued throughout the ripening season resulting in increasing yield of oil with time while maintaining high quality. Hence, exploiting the production potential in ‘Barnea’ requires late harvest and advanced fruit maturity. However, in heavily loaded ‘Souri’, oil accumulation was accompanied by early massive shedding of fruits. Furthermore, late harvest and advanced maturation in ‘Souri’ were associated with a sharp increase in free fatty acids combined with a rapid decline in polyphenol content, and in MUFA to PUFA and saturated to unsaturated fatty acid ratios, all resulting in loss of oil quality. Rapid decline in oil yield coupled with deterioration of oil quality call for early harvesting at low maturity index in ‘Souri’. In medium-yielding trees of both cultivars, maturation progressed more rapidly, resulting in earlier harvest to utilize optimal oil potential.  相似文献

The wild lettuce, Lactuca aculeata Boiss. et Ky., is closely related and fully interfertile with cultivated lettuce, Lactuca sativa L. Altogether, 155 accessions of this wild species, which is rare conserved within the world’s germplasm collections, were collected from 12 localities throughout northeastern Israel. Ten of these localities represent different sites across the Golan Heights, while two, high-density populations were suprisingly found at the Hula Plain (first report of this species in this region). Lactuca aculeata was recorded at various elevations (222–968 m a.s.l.) and habitats. The taxonomic status of 30 L. aculeata accessions was morphologically validated during ex situ seed regeneration of 31 random accessions representing all 12 localities. Characterization of 12 traits showed that the Israeli populations of L. aculeata do not exhibit broad morphological variability, but more great levels of variation were obtained for developmental traits. Relatively little variability was observed in the morphology of cauline leaves or in the distribution of anthocyanin pigmentation in bracteae. In two cases, L. aculeata plants lacked trichomes in the inflorescence, a typical feature in the majority of plants. These unique collections of wild lettuce may carry novel sources of genetic variation for a wide range of traits and, thus, should be of interest for careful evaluation and exploitation in lettuce breeding.  相似文献

The way in which a frictional interface fails is critical to our fundamental understanding of failure processes in fields ranging from engineering to the study of earthquakes. Frictional motion is initiated by rupture fronts that propagate within the thin interface that separates two sheared bodies. By measuring the shear and normal stresses along the interface, together with the subsequent rapid real-contact-area dynamics, we find that the ratio of shear stress to normal stress can locally far exceed the static-friction coefficient without precipitating slip. Moreover, different modes of rupture selected by the system correspond to distinct regimes of the local stress ratio. These results indicate the key role of nonuniformity to frictional stability and dynamics with implications for the prediction, selection, and arrest of different modes of earthquakes.  相似文献

The investigation of plant adaptive strategies has been enhanced by the advent of high resolution climate models facilitating greatly improved fine-scale habitat characterization. We have used this approach in the evaluation of C. judaicum Boiss., an annual wild relative of chickpea. 54 accessions from 12 Israeli populations representing three separate habitats differing in temperature and terminal drought stress intensity were evaluated in a common garden experiment, measuring phenology and growth. The results indicate that C. judaicum formed distinct ecotypes along environmental stress gradients, with stress avoidance as a key adaptive strategy: (1) germination is delayed with increasing collection site altitude and associated decreasing temperatures; (2) flowering date and productivity (as estimated by mainstem length) are inversely related to habitat stress, as defined by site climate or soil type. Populations from stressful sites escape drought stress through early flowering at the likely cost of biomass production. We conclude that precise habitat characterization facilitates the study of specific adaptation over relatively short geographic distances. This is particularly pertinent today because many of the key crop production system stresses (i.e., terminal drought, the impact of climate change) can be modelled climatically to identify potentially-adapted germplasm from ex situ and in situ collections.  相似文献

During a long evolutionary history across a range of environmental conditions in the Near East Fertile Crescent, wild emmer wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. dicoccoides) has accumulated a wealth of genetic diversity and adaptations to multiple biotic and abiotic stress conditions. The joint effects of the domestication and subsequent selection in man-made agro-ecosystems have considerably reduced the genetic variation in cultivated crop species as compared to their wild progenitors. The wild emmer gene pool harbors a rich allelic repertoire for improving numerous agronomically important traits. A set of advanced wild emmer wheat introgression lines (ILs) was previously established on a bread wheat genetic background. It combines genetic diversity from the wild progenitor as well as the genetic background of the cultigen. Based on field evaluations, the set of ILs (divided hierarchically into different families based on the genetic background) has exhibited high phenotypic variance in agronomically important traits. Analyses of variance ?(ANOVA) have shown that the effect of the hierarchical genetic factors was significant in the vast majority of the traits. Similarly, characterizations by molecular markers of known traits have shown that the genetic profile differs between ILs from different genetic backgrounds. Multivariate principal component analysis has revealed interesting associations between vegetative and reproductive traits and illustrated the impact of some of these traits on ILs distribution in the PC1 and PC2. The exploitation of the wild emmer wheat ILs as a tool for reintroduction of alleles that were lost during domestication and possible implications for wheat breeding are discussed.  相似文献
