CASE HISTORY A 3-year-old male Labrador retriever was presented with a history of dietary indiscretion followed by vomiting and abdominal pain.

CLINICAL FINDINGS AND TREATMENT: Abdominal ultrasonography revealed the presence of a fluid-filled cystic structure in the region of the pancreas. Flocculent, dark fluid was drained from the cystic structure during exploratory celiotomy prior to resection of the lateral cystic wall. Omentum was sutured into the cystic cavity to provide drainage and enhance immune response. A jejunostomy feeding tube was placed. Post-surgical care consisted of antibiotic therapy. The dog was clinically normal at 1 and 7 months post-operatively and the pancreas appeared normal on final ultrasonographic examination.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This case describes the use of omentum to provide physiological drainage of a pancreatic pseudocyst. This surgical technique may help clinicians manage patients with this condition in the future.  相似文献

The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is essential for follicular development by promoting follicular angiogenesis, as well as for the proliferation and survival of granulosa cells. The biological effects of VEGF are regulated by two membrane receptors, VEGFR1 and VEGFR2, and two soluble receptors, sVEGFR1 and sVEGFR2, which play an antagonistic role. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify the mRNA expression pattern of total VEGF, VEGFR1, VEGFR2, sVEGFR1 and sVEGFR2 in bovine preselected follicles (PRF) and post‐selected follicles (POF). The mRNA expression of these five genes in both granulosa cells (GC) and theca cells (TC) was compared between follicles classified as PRF and POF based on their diameter and on their ratio of estradiol/progesterone (E2/P4). Results showed a lower expression of mRNA of sVEGFR1 and sVEGFR2 in POF than in PRF (p < .05). Regarding the mRNA expression of total VEGF, VEGFR1 and VEGFR2, there was no difference between POF and PRF follicles (p > .05). Our results showed that the mRNA expression of VEGFR2 and sVEGFR1 was more abundant than the expression of VEGFR1 and sVEGFR2, while GC was the main source of mRNA for total VEGF. On the other hand, TC was the follicular compartment where the receptors were most expressed. Our results suggest that non‐dominant follicles maintain a greater concentration of the mRNA expression of both membrane and soluble VEGF receptors. On the other hand, follicular dominance is related to a reduction in the mRNA expression of sVEGFR1 and sVEGFR2, which may favour VEGF binding with VEGFR2 and, hence, improve the follicular health and development.  相似文献

Each of two dogs presented for multiple skin biopsies were sedated with intravenous medetomidine and lignocaine was injected subcutaneously to provide local anaesthesia for skin biopsy. One dog had a seizure during skin biopsy and again immediately following reversal of medetomidine with atipamezole. The other dog developed seizures 2 h following skin biopsy at which time the medetomidine was reversed with atipamezole. Both dogs were neurologically normal with no history of seizures prior to the procedure and remained neurologically normal for 14 weeks and 9 months, respectively, following the procedure. A drug interaction between the α2-adrenergic agonist medetomidine and lignocaine is suspected and highlights the potential for seizures following the subcutaneous administration of relatively large doses of lignocaine under medetomidine sedation.  相似文献

Cereals β-glucans are linear homopolysaccharides of consecutively linked (1→4)-β-d-glucosyl residues (i.e. oligomeric cellulose segments) that are separated by single (1→3)-linkages. β-Glucans display all the functional properties of viscous and gel forming food hydrocolloids combined with all the physiological properties of dietary fibres. This review focuses on the relationships between the molecular–structural characteristics of β-glucans and their physicochemical properties in aqueous dispersions and in food systems as well as their physiological functions in the gastro-intestinal tract. The physical properties of β-glucans, such as solubility and rheological behaviour in the solution and gel states, are controlled by their molecular features, such as their distribution of cellulosic oligomers, their linkage pattern and their molecular weight as well as by temperature and concentration. The technological and nutritional functionality of β-glucans is often related to their rheological behaviour. Incorporation of β-glucans into various products (bread, muffins, pasta, noodles, salad dressings, beverages, soups, reduced-fat dairy and meat products) showed that attributes, such as breadmaking performance, water binding and emulsion stabilising capacity, thickening ability, texture, and appearance appear to be related to the concentration, molecular weight and structure of the polysaccharide. The health benefits of β-glucans, such as reducing blood serum cholesterol and regulating blood glucose levels, are also correlated with the amount and molecular weight of the solubilised β-glucans in the gastro-intestinal tract.  相似文献

The influence of patent, middle-cut and clear flour grades as native or reconstituted flour blends on both the rheological properties of the dough and the quality of semi-sweet biscuit (flour/sugar/fat/water ratio of 100/30/8/36) was studied. Moving from the central portion (patent) to the peripheral portion (clear) of the grain endosperm increased the dough hardness from 3.77 to 4.84 N, consistency from 19.3 to 25.5 N s, elongational viscosity from 4.13×10−5 to 5.54×10−5 Pa s, half-relaxation time from 0.45 to 0.59 s, but decreased the rate of relaxation from 4.51 to 3.09 s−1 of the biscuit's dough produced with the native flours due to the wide variation in the physico-chemical properties of these fractions. Quantitatively, the fractionation/reconstitution procedure reduced moderately these rheological parameters, and the flour functionality could not be restored completely. Biscuits produced with the patent flour showed the largest length and lowest thickness, whilst the clear fraction led to production of denser biscuits with greater cohesion (mean tearing force) of the biscuit inner structure and also contain more grains or group of grains per unit of penetration (number of spatial ruptures). The biscuits made with the reconstituted flour fractions had almost equivalent dimensional characteristics, and excellent surface appearance, but were also darker in colour than their native flour counterparts.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to identify the biochemical parameters that alter the soft wheat flour functionality for biscuit-making quality. A 9-point simplex centroid was used to investigate the effect of varying the ratios of gluten, water-solubles and starch-fractions isolated from three different flour grades (patent, middle-cut and clear flours) which exhibited a wide range of compositional and functionality characteristics on the dough rheological behaviour and the semi-sweet biscuit quality parameters. The amounts of soluble and insoluble proteins and pentosans as well as the endogenous lipids in each flour fraction were quantified. Dough consistency, elongational viscosity, hardness, half-relaxation time, relaxation rate constant, cohesiveness and springiness as well as biscuit density, firmness, tearing force and spatial frequency for the different flour fraction combinations were also assessed. Regression models have been developed to predict the responses of the rheological attributes of the dough as well as the biscuit quality characteristics to the compositional changes of the flour blends; in addition to the main linear terms (concentration of starch, gluten and water-solubles isolated from the different flour grades), significant interaction terms were identified which cannot be neglected in any prediction scheme for the dough and biscuit properties. Contour plots were drawn in an effort to better understand the overall property responses of the dough and biscuits. Significant relationships among certain dough rheological parameters and biscuit characteristics were found, implying a functional role for the total, soluble and insoluble proteins, pentosans and lipids in biscuit making.  相似文献

The breeding of South American camelids is the main economic activity of the high Andean region of South America and it, is potentially, the most profitable resource in of the Puna environmental conditions of the Puna. The duration of the gestation in alpaca is 339.7 ± 12 days. The objective of the present work was to macroscopically and microscopically describe the ontogenic development of the splanchnic cavities of the alpaca and to determine the gestational time in which the post‐cranial ossification centers are observed in the embryos/fetuses of this species, from day 21 to 107 of gestation. The documentation of normal ontogenic development, which is vacant for this period, is of the utmost importance to understand the consequences of the alterations at the different gestational times, as well as for the estimation of the gestational age in the case of abortions. Forty‐seven alpaca specimens of both sexes, at different times of their gestational development, collected during slaughter at local slaughterhouses of the Department of Huancavelica, Peru, were evaluated. Specimens were assigned to seven groups according to their morphological characteristics. The embryogenesis in the alpaca was characterized by a series of changes comparable to those occurring in other mammals with similar gestational periods. Despite these similarities, species differences were found in some organs as stomach, which are observed too in adult individuals.  相似文献

A commercial sample of oat β-glucan was fractionated through stepwise precipitation with ammonium sulphate to yield four fractions. These were analysed for apparent viscosity values, relative molecular weights using high-performance size-exclusion chromatography, and chemical structure by methylation analysis and analysis of water-soluble fragments released from the fractions by lichenase. Fractions exhibiting lower molecular size and decreased limiting viscosity values were precipitated at higher concentrations of ammonium sulphate. Methylation analysis indicated that in all fractions β-(1→3) and β-(1→4) linkages represented more than 90% of all linkages present. The β-(1→3) to β-(1→4) ratio in the fractions decreased with molecular size. β-glucan fractions with distinct physical and structural characteristics were obtained with the ammonium sulphate fractional precipitation technique.  相似文献

Cadmium (Cd) is a well‐known toxicant targeting many organs, among them placenta. This heavy metal also has embryonary and foetal toxicity. This study was undertaken to analyse the effect of a single Cd dose administered at 4, 7, 10 or 15 days of gestation on the offspring of pregnant rats sacrificed at 20 days of gestation. Cadmium chloride was administered subcutaneously at 10 mg/kg body weight to Wistar pregnant dams; control animals received a proportionate volume of sterile normal saline by the same route. Maternal uteri, livers, kidneys and lungs, and foetuses were examined at necropsy. Samples of maternal organs and whole foetuses were collected for histopathologic examination, determination of Cd levels and staining by the Alizarin red S technique. Results revealed a clear embryotoxic and a teratogenic effect of this heavy metal, the former as a significant increase in the number of resorptions, and the latter as significant decrease of the gestational sac weight, and the size and weight of foetuses of Cd‐treated dams as well as induced malformations in skull bones, vertebrae and thoracic, and pelvian limbs. The deleterious effects found were similar to those previously reported for other animal models suggesting a high conservation of the pathogenic mechanisms of Cd. Additionally, many of the addressed aspects showed a slight dependence on the time of administration of the toxic that might be due to the accumulation of the metal in different organs, as we were able to demonstrate by the analysis of its concentration.  相似文献
