Tea (Camellia sinensis) is a globally important crop and is unusual because it both requires an acid soil and acidifies soil. Tea stands tend to be extremely heavily fertilized in order to improve yield and quality, resulting in a great potential for diffuse pollution. The microbial ecology of tea soils remains poorly understood; an improved understanding is necessary as processes affecting nutrient availability and loss pathways are microbially mediated. We therefore examined the relationships between soil characteristics (pH, organic C, total N, total P, available P, exchangeable Al), the soil microbial biomass (biomass C, biomass ninhydrin-N, ATP, phospholipid fatty acids—PLFAs) and its activities (respiration, net mineralization and nitrification). At the Tea Research Institute, Hangzhou (TRI), we compared fields of different productivity levels (low, medium and high) and at Hongjiashan village (HJS) we compared fields of different stand age (9, 50 and 90 years). At both sites tea soils were compared with adjacent forest soils. At both sites, soil pH was highest in the forest soil and decreased with increasing productivity and age of the tea stand. Soil microbial biomass C and biomass ninhydrin-N were significantly affected by tea production. At TRI, microbial biomass C declined in the order forest>low>high>middle production and at HJS in the order stand age 50>age 9>forest>age 90. Soil pH had a strong influence on the microbial biomass, demonstrated by positive linear correlations with: microbial biomass C, microbial biomass ninhydrin-N, the microbial biomass C:organic C ratio, the microbial biomass ninhydrin-N:total N ratio, the respiration rate and specific respiration rate. Above pH(KCl) 3.5 there was net N mineralization and nitrification, and below this threshold some samples showed net immobilization of N. A principal component (PC) analysis of PLFA data showed a consistent shift in the community composition with productivity level and stand age. The ratio of fungal:bacterial PLFA biomarkers was negatively and linearly correlated with specific respiration in the soils from HJS (r2=0.93, p=0.03). Our results demonstrate that tea cultivation intensity and duration have a strong impact on the microbial community structure, biomass and its functioning, likely through soil acidification and fertilizer addition.  相似文献

Most investigations into the effects of changing soil pH on microbial activity use, from necessity, soils taken from different sites so that soil physical and chemical properties are confounded. Studies along continuous gradients of soil pH within a single soil type are rare, simply because so few exist, in UK or even worldwide. Here we report measurements of mineralisation of native organic matter and added arginine along a continuous soil pH gradient (range about pH 3.7–8.3) of a UK silty clay loam soil (Chromic Luvisol or Typic Paleudalf). The soil has been maintained under constant management for more than 100 years, with winter wheat sown annually. The soil NH4+-N concentration was maximal at the lowest pH (pH 3.7), declining exponentially until pH 5.5 and remaining negligible thereafter. However, unexpectedly, soil NO3?-N concentration was also maximal at pH 3.7 and was significantly negatively correlated with increasing pH thereafter. To investigate these unexpected NO3?-N results, arginine was added as a labile source of organic N and its extent of ammonification and nitrification measured at soil pHs 3.79, 4.42, 6.08 and 7.82. While arginine ammonification was apparently greatest at pHs 3.79 and 4.42, similar to mineralisation of soil organic N, nitrification of this added N was greatest at soil pH 7.82 and least at pH 3.79, the reverse of the situation with soil organic N, but much more in line with what was expected. It was concluded that the decline in soil NO3?-N with increasing pH in the unamended soils was an artefact, caused by increasing plant uptake of NO3?-N as yield increased, rather than a true effect of low pH increasing nitrification of soil organic N. Our results differ from most previous studies, which showed poor correlations between soil pH and arginine mineralisation. This was attributed to our use of much longer incubation times (up to 50 days) than usually employed. Under our conditions, arginine was therefore shown to be a useful model for mineralisation of labile soil organic N.  相似文献

In pasture‐based dairy farming, new sustainable systems that involve the annual dry matter (DM) production of grazed and conserved forage beyond the potential of grazed pasture alone are being sought. The objective of this experiment conducted in Australia was to compare a complementary forage rotation (CFR) for conservation and grazing, comprising an annual sequence of three crops, namely maize (Zea mays L), forage rape (Brassica napus L) and a legume (Persian clover, Trifolium repesinatum L or maple pea, Pisum sativum L), with a pasture [kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) over‐sown with short‐rotation ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L)] as a pasture control treatment. The experiment was a complete randomized block design with four replicates (~0·7 ha each). Annual dry‐matter (DM) yield over the 3 years averaged >42 t ha?1 year?1 for the CFR treatment and >17 t ha?1 year?1 for the pasture treatment. The high DM yield of the CFR treatment resulted from >27 t ha?1 year?1 from maize harvested for silage and >15 t DM ha?1 year?1 utilized by grazing the forage rape and legumes. Total input of nitrogen (N) and water were similar for both treatments, resulting in higher N‐ and water‐use efficiency for the CFR treatment, which was more than twice that for the pasture treatment. Overall, the nutritive value of the pasture treatment was slightly higher than the mean for that of the CFR treatment. The implications of these results are that a highly productive system based on the CFR treatment in conjunction with the use of pasture is achievable. Such a dairy production system in Australia could increase the total supply of feed resources grown on‐farm and the efficiency of use of key resources such as N and water.  相似文献

Blood samples were taken from 428 young British Friesian bulls, the sons of 72 sires, between 3 and 15 months of age. The concentrations of blood glucose and haemoglobin and serum cholesterol, urea, albumin, globulin, inorganic phosphate, Ca, Mg, Na, K and Cu were measured and correlated with age and growth rate.Most of the constituents showed highly significant but small changes in concentration with age. The largest changes occurred in the concentrations of urea, albumin and haemoglobin which increased as bulls reached maturity. The concentrations of urea, albumin and globulin were also lower and concentrations of glucose, inorganic phosphate, Ca and K higher than usually occur in older cattle.Highest estimates of heritability, based on the mean of 3 samples, were for K and globulin (> 0.6) and for haemoglobin, cholesterol, inorganic phosphate, Cu and glucose (0.4–0.6). Phenotypic correlations between 0.2 and 0.4 occurred with growth rate for albumin and glucose between 24 and 35 weeks and with body weight for albumin between 27 and 50 weeks of age; however, the phenotypic correlations with average growth rate up to 53 weeks were only 0.15 and 0.07 for albumin and glucose, respectively. Genetic correlations with growth rate were also determined, but standard errors were large.  相似文献

A brief account is given of the work leading up to the synthesis of epronaz (BTS 30 843), 1-(N-ethyl-N-propylcarbamoyl)-3-propylsulphonyl-1,2,4-triazole, a new pre- and early post-emergence herbicide for annual grasses. The synthesis is described, together with the occurrence and isolation of all three possible positional isomers in the final (carbamoylation) stage. The evidence for the structure assigned to epronaz is presented together with that for the other two isomers, and their interconversion is described. Some chemical properties of epronaz are described, with particular reference to its hydrolysis and its ability to function as a carbamoylating agent, in relation to persistence in the environment and to mode of action respectively. Some physical properties are also reported, including vapour pressure, solubility, and spectra. The mass spectral fragmentation pattern is also discussed.  相似文献

Highly pathogenic porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) has spread through parts of south-east Asia, posing a risk to Australia. The objective of this study was to assess the probability of infection of a feral or domestic pig in Australia with highly pathogenic PRRS following ingestion of illegally imported raw pork. A conservative scenario was considered in which 500 g of raw pork was imported from the Philippines into Australia without being detected by border security, then discarded from a household and potentially accessed by a pig. Monte Carlo simulation of a two-dimensional, stochastic model was used to estimate the probability of entry and exposure, and the probability of infection was assessed by incorporating a virus-decay and mechanistic dose–response model. Results indicated that the probability of infection of a feral pig after ingestion of raw meat was higher than the probability of infection of a domestic pig. Sensitivity analysis was used to assess the influence of input parameters on model output probability estimates, and extension of the virus-decay and dose–response model was used to explore the impact of different temperatures and time from slaughter to ingestion of the meat, different weights of meat, and the level of viraemia at slaughter on the infectivity of meat. Parameters with the highest influence on the model output were the level of viraemia of a pig prior to slaughter and the probability of access by a feral pig to food-waste discarded on property surrounding a household. Extension of the decay and dose–response model showed that small pieces of meat (10 g) from a highly pathogenic PRRS viraemic pig could contain enough virus to have a high probability of infection of a pig, and that routes to Australia by sea or air from all highly pathogenic PRRS virus endemic countries were of interest dependent on the temperature of the raw meat during transport. This study highlighted the importance of mitigation strategies such as disposal of food-waste from international traffic as quarantine waste, and the need for further research into the probability of access to food-waste on properties by feral pigs.  相似文献

The concept that superconductivity competes with other orders in cuprate superconductors has become increasingly apparent, but obtaining direct evidence with bulk-sensitive probes is challenging. We have used resonant soft x-ray scattering to identify two-dimensional charge fluctuations with an incommensurate periodicity of ~3.2 lattice units in the copper-oxide planes of the superconductors (Y,Nd)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(6+)(x), with hole concentrations of 0.09 to 0.13 per planar Cu ion. The intensity and correlation length of the fluctuation signal increase strongly upon cooling down to the superconducting transition temperature (T(c)); further cooling below T(c) abruptly reverses the divergence of the charge correlations. In combination with earlier observations of a large gap in the spin excitation spectrum, these data indicate an incipient charge density wave instability that competes with superconductivity.  相似文献
