Abstract. The validity of the model described in Greenwood & Karpinets (1997) was tested against the results of single year, multi level K fertilizer experiments. Measurements of plant mass, %K in the plant and K activity ratio in soil had been made at harvest and at intervals during the growing season on spring wheat, summer cabbage and turnips. Reasonably good agreement was obtained between these measurements and simulated values when the two 'crop' parameters (defining the dependence of critical and maximum possible %K on plant mass) were adjusted for each crop. Also good agreement was generally obtained for plant weight and plant %K at harvest in less detailed experiments on 10 other crops. Values of the two 'crop' parameters for 12 of the crops were strongly correlated with one another suggesting that a single 'crop' parameter may be all that is required to define most inter-species differences in plant-K demand.
Simulations with the model indicate that, in central England, no response of 10 crops to K fertilizer would be likely on soils containing more than 170 mg of 1 M ammonium nitrate extractable-K/kg of soil and having clay contents of between 15 and 45%. Shortcomings of the model and opportunities for advance are discussed.

Abstract. Ten chalk topsoils (0-25 cm) were repacked into columns in the laboratory. After leaching similar to one year's throughflow in the field, loss of K was equivalent to between 9 and 74kg K/ha. This represented between 3 and 30% of the initial exchangeable K with which loss was poorly correlated. Loss was dependant on the soil solution concentration and was inversely proportional to potassium buffer power.
The loss of magnesium in the same columns was between 10 and 22 kg Mg/ha (6-21% of the initial exchangeable Mg). Magnesium loss was poorly correlated with exchangeable Mg.
When KCl fertilizer was incorporated into the soils, the increase in leaching of potassium was 1–35% of the K addition. Application to the top of the column resulted in less leaching than when the K was incorporated. Leaching of magnesium was increased by up to 5 kg Mg/ha.
Potassium leaching may be delayed by the underlying A/C horizon but pure chalk, with an extremely low buffer power for K, has little ability to retain K. Extremely calcareous topsoils were the most leaky although in practice it is the organic chalk soils on which it is most difficult to attain adequate K levels. On all chalk soils, maintenance of a high K level with K fertilizer is likely to cause unnecessary long-term leaching losses. Neonatal diarrheic calves have a clear negative potassium balance because of intestinal losses and decreased milk intake but in the presence of acidemia, they usually show normokalemic or hyperkalemic plasma concentrations.Objectives

Eighty‐three calves with a clinical diagnosis of neonatal diarrhea.Methods
Prospective cohort study. Calves were treated according to a clinical protocol using an oral electrolyte solution and commercially available packages of 8.4% sodium bicarbonate, 0.9% saline and 40% dextrose infusion solutions.Results
The proportion of hypokalemic calves after 24 hours of treatment (19.3%) was twice as great as it was on admission to the hospital. Plasma K+ after 24 hours of treatment was not significantly correlated to venous blood pH values at the same time but positively correlated to venous blood pH values on admission (r = 0.51, P < .001). Base excess on admission (Odds ratio [OR] = 0.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.70–0.94), duration of diarrhea (OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.05–1.80), milk intake during hospitalization (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.37–0.79) and plasma sodium concentrations after 24 hours (OR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.01–1.25) were identified to be independently associated (P < .05) with a hypokalemic state after 24 hours of treatment.Conclusions and Clinical Importance
Findings of this study suggest that marked depletion of body potassium stores is evident in diarrheic calves that suffered from marked metabolic acidosis, have a low milk intake and a long history of diarrhea. 相似文献36.

AIM:To investigate the effect of potassium treatment on coronary arterial impairment induced by high salt intake. METHODS:Sprague-Dawley rats (4-week-old, n=10 in each group) received distilled water (NS), water containing 1.5% NaCl (HS), or 1.5% NaCl and 0.5% KCl (HS+HP) for 16 weeks. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was determined by tail plethysmography every 2 weeks. After 16 weeks of treatment, vascular remodeling, superoxide production, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and gp91 expression in the coronary arteries were detected. RESULTS:After 16 weeks of salt loading, the rats in HS group was divided into salt sensitive subgroup and salt resistance subgroup according to the tail-cuff blood pressure. In this experiment, the salt-sensitive rats were selected as HS group. In HS group, salt loading significantly increased SBP, serum MDA and gp91 expression, decreased serum NO and eNOS expression in the coronary arteries, and induced the coronary artery remodeling compared with NS group. In salt-loaded SD rats, 16-week potassium treatment abrogated the effects induced by salt loading. CONCLUSION:High salt may affect structural and functional changes in coronary arteries by activating oxidative stress. Potassium treatment antagonizes the effect of high salt intake. 相似文献

AIM:To investigate the effects of voltage-dependent K+ channel 1.5 (Kv1.5) on the proliferation and apoptosis of rat pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) under hypoxia+hypercapnia condition and the relationship with mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK) signal pathway. METHODS:The PASMCs isolated from the male SD rat were cultured under hypoxia+hypercapnia condition, and randomly divided into normal group (N group), hypoxia+hypercapnia group (HH group), hypoxia+hypercapnia+DMSO incubation group (HD group), hypoxia+hypercapnia+U0126 (an extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 inhibitor) incubation group (HU group), hypoxia+hypercapnia+SB203580 (a p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase inhibitor) incubation group (HS group), and hypoxia+hypercapnia+anisomycin (an agonist of MAPK) incubation group (HA group). Cell Counting Kit-8 was used to detect the cell viability. The protein expression of Kv1.5, PCNA and Bax was detected by Western blotting. RESULTS:Compared with N group, the cell viability and PCNA protein expression in HH group and HD group were significantly raised (P<001), but Kv1.5 and Bax proteins were significantly decreased (P<0.01). No difference between HH group and HD group was observed (P>005). Compared with HD group, the cell viability and PCNA protein expression in HU group, HS group and HA group were decreased (P<0.05 or P<0.01), but Kv1.5 protein and Bax protein were raised (P<0.01), with the most significant changes in HA group. CONCLUSION:The regulation of Kv1.5 to the proliferation and apoptosis of PASMCs under hypoxia+hypercapnia condition might have a relationship with the activation of MAPK signal pathway. 相似文献

Larvae of Haliotis discus hannai were induced to settle and metamorphose by exposure to seawater supplemented with bromomethane. The settlement and metamorphosis of veliger larvae were observed with bromomethane concentrations of 300, 600, 900, 1200, 1500 ppm on the benthic diatom plates. The highest settlement and metamorphosis rates of larvae were observed in bromomethane concentrations of 600 ppm.
