Intensification of weather extremes is currently emerging as one of the most important facets of climate change. Research frontiers are in analyzing (1) the consequences for the hydrological cycle and (2) the effects of multifactor scenarios on ecosystems. However, in all theoretical and experimental scenarios, challenges arise as to how precipitation regimes translate into variation in soil moisture. Here, we explore soil‐moisture response to experimental changes in the precipitation regime in Central Europe over a period of 5 y, particularly focusing on the effects of recurrent extreme weather events. Intraannual difference in weekly precipitation sums imposed by extreme‐drought or heavy‐rainfall manipulations clearly exceeded interannual variation in the ambient precipitation pattern during the growing season between 2005 and 2009. However, soil‐moisture variability in the experimental plots did not clearly reflect any altered patterns in response to the manipulated precipitation regime. Natural variation in soil moisture between years was similar to within‐season differences between manipulations. Strong differences in soil‐moisture dynamics during the growing season can, however, be generated by changing the temporal distribution of rainfall events while keeping the magnitude of the precipitation sum constant. Our findings confirm a common methodological dilemma in precipitation‐change experiments searching for a logical way to determine how precipitation change affects communities and ecosystems on relatively short time scales: Alteration of weather regimes according to extreme‐value statistics and future scenarios vs. systematic alteration of soil moisture. For Central Europe, our data suggest that other factors rather than the magnitude of rainfall exclusion or addition would appear to be decisive for ecosystem response to more extreme precipitation regimes. Response of soil moisture to frequency, return interval, and timing of events is a promising approach for further exploration. In addition, buffer capacity of the ecosystem under study has to be taken into account.  相似文献

Using a crossover design, the effects of the addition of ketamine to a previously determined optimal hand-injected immobilization dosage of carfentanil/xylazine were evaluated in 11 adult white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Two i.m. ketamine dosages were evaluated: 0.15 mg/kg (low ketamine) and 0.30 mg/kg (high ketamine). Each deer was immobilized twice 2 wk apart. Inductions were video recorded and reviewed by observers, who had been blinded to drugs and dosages, who rated qualitative aspects. There were significant (P < 0.05) dosage-dependent decreases in heart rate, SaO2, and arterial pH, and a significant dosage-dependent increase in PaCO2. Induction times with both dosages were more rapid (mean 2.3 +/- 0.9 min for low ketamine and 2.3 +/- 0.6 min for high ketamine) than those reported for the same carfentanil/xylazine dosage used without ketamine. Mean quality ratings, though improved compared to those reported for carfentanil/xylazine alone, were considered "undesirable" for both dosages. Hyperthermia (temperature > 41 degrees C) was noted in 13 of 22 immobilizations. Arterial pH and PaO2 increased significantly from 10 to 20 min postrecumbency, but acidemia (pH < 7.3) was present throughout immobilization periods for all deer. There were ketamine dosage-dependent increases in respiratory components of this acidemia compared with that associated with carfentanil/xylazine alone. Possible hypoxemia was present at both sampling times for both groups, while hypercapnea (PaCO2 > 60 mm Hg) was present for the high-ketamine group only. Reversal times for naltrexone and yohimbine were rapid (mean 2.9 +/- 0.7 min for low ketamine and 3.3 +/- 0.8 min for high ketamine), with no evidence of renarcotization. Although the addition of ketamine to carfentanil/xylazine caused faster inductions and improved induction qualities, it also produced an increased incidence of hyperthermia, acidemia, hypoxemia, and hypercapnea. Supplemental oxygen and close monitoring of body temperature is recommended when using this immobilization regimen.  相似文献

  • 1. The lacustrine brown trout (Salmo trutta) is endangered and of high conservation importance. In the only spawning habitat of the population in the Bavarian Lake Walchensee, the River Obernach, a substantial decrease in spawning runs has been reported. In this study, the present ecological state of the spawning stream was analysed with the objective of identifying life‐stage specific limitations to successful recruitment attributable to deficiencies in (i) spawning migration, (ii) spawning habitat quality, and (iii) habitat quality for juveniles.

Structural stream analysis showed that discharge and several migration barriers — particularly near the river outlet into the lake — prevent successful spawning migrations at normal water levels. Migration barriers are probably the main limiting factor for reproduction of lacustrine brown trout, whereas structural variability of the Obernach meets the habitat requirements of both spawners and juveniles.
  • 3. Spawning site quality was suitable for trout, as indicated by stream substratum texture and high exchange rates between free‐flowing water and the interstitial zone in physico‐chemical parameters (redox potential, dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature and conductivity).
  • 4. Analyses of fish community structure revealed dominance of lithophilic species, in particular of riverine brown trout (Salmo trutta). Its density and intact demographic population structure suggest that spawning and juvenile habitat quality for salmonids is not limiting. Recapture of stocked lacustrine trout juveniles also indicates habitat suitability for the juvenile stage.

In conclusion, the results show that the methodology used in this study is suitable for the identification of life‐stage specific habitat deficiencies in lacustrine brown trout and other fish species. Availability of habitat data throughout the species' distribution range is a first crucial step for the development of an effective recovery plan. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The residual infectivity of an oil formulation of the fungal entomopathogen Metarhizium flavoviride was measured during a field trial against the rice grasshopper, Hieroglyphus daganensis, in north Benin. The pattern of infectivity was shown to decline exponentially following application, with a half-life of 6·8 days. In this environment, infections due to residual spores from the spray were identified as a key route of infection and accounted for 40–50% of the total infection measured 12 days after application. To examine the within- and between-season consequences of such residual infection, a simple host–pathogen model was developed. The model revealed that even very small increases in residual activity could provide large increases in total mortality and that under certain conditions, residual infection was essential for effective pest control. This aspect of the activity of mycopesticides is rarely considered. The implications of these results are discussed in the context of developing optimum spray strategies for locust and grasshopper control under different ecological conditions. © 1997 SCI.  相似文献

The ultrastructural features of quinolone-induced arthropathy were studied in the humeral and femoral heads of nine skeletally immature Beagle dogs (3 months old) that were dosed orally with difloxacin at 300 mg/kg body weight and euthanatized 24, 36, or 48 hours later in groups of three. Three age-matched dogs were given a placebo and euthanatized after 48 hours. Mitochondria in chondrocytes had significantly greater cross-sectional areas (P less than 0.05) in electron micrographs from dogs euthanatized after 48 hours of treatment than did those in other groups. There was also a significantly greater percentage of chondrocytes with swollen mitochondria in treated dogs than in the controls (P less than 0.05). These changes preceded the necrosis observed in some chondrocytes in the dogs of the 48-hour group. Disruption of extracellular matrix was first observed in the pericellular matrix of necrotic chondrocytes, indicating that this change was secondary to the changes in chondrocytes. Fissures within cartilages apparently resulted from the loss of the normal association of proteoglycans with collagen fibrils.  相似文献

Acid hydrolysis, acid methanolysis, and enzymatic hydrolysis were compared for depolymerization of five different plant materials containing uronic acids. The analyzed plant materials were oat spelt, wheat straw, spruce thermomechanical pulp, aspen stemwood, and totally chlorine-free (TCF) bleached hardwood kraft pulp. Furthermore, GC (using both HP-1 and HP-5 capillary columns and FID and MSD detectors), HPAEC-PAD, and HPAEC-Borate techniques were compared for subsequent analysis of the released monosaccharides. It was shown that acid methanolysis combined with GC analysis is a convenient method for obtaining the sugar unit composition and amount of non-crystalline polysaccharides in different plant materials. The methanolysis method was generally superior to the hydrolysis method for xylan- and uronic acid-containing samples. However, acid and enzymatic hydrolysis showed the highest recoveries for bleached chemical pulp samples. Acid hydrolysis is also required for crystalline polysaccharides, but the strong acid conditions evidently lead to degradation of labile sugars. The plant methanolysates were not suitable as such for analysis on an HPAEC-PAD system. For analysis of the total amount of sugar units, hence including cellulose, other non-crystalline hemicelluloses, and pectins, a combination of the methanolysis and hydrolysis methods is recommended.  相似文献
