Effects of whole-tree clearcutting are being studied in three major forest types in the northeastern United States: a spruce-fir forest in central Maine, a northern hardwood forest in New Hampshire, and a central hardwood forest in Connecticut. At each site we sampled total and extractable nutrient capitals, inputs and outputs of nutrient ions in precipitation and streamflow, nutrient removals in harvested products, and nutrient accumulation in regrowth. Depending upon location, combined losses of nutrients in harvested products and increased leaching to streams were in the ranges of 374–558 kg ha−1 for Ca, 135–253 kg ha−1 for K, 50–65 kg ha−1 for Mg, 248–379 kg ha−1 for N, and 19–54 kg ha−1 for P. Opportunities for replacing these losses over the next rotation are best for N. Data on inputs in precipitation versus outputs in streamflow indicate that, once effects of harvest subside, most N in precipitation will stay within the forest. By contrast, Ca shows a net output of 8–15 kg ha−1 year−1 from uncut watersheds, and the added leaching losses due to harvest may have a serious impact on Ca capital. This is especially the case for the Connecticut site, where total site capital for Ca is only about 4000 kg ha−1.  相似文献

Summary A considerable amount of data has been collected over the past few years on the rupture life of particleboard. This information is particularly valuable at the present time because there is increasing interest in the use of particleboard as a structural material. This paper presents a conventional analysis of the time to failure of three commercially available brands of particleboard at 20°C and at three fixed levels of relative humidity. A linear relationship is assumed between the logarithm of time to failure and stress level, and an improvement is made in the usual method of analysis by including censored specimens. The regression lines are projected forward to give estimates of the stress levels that can be sustained for a particular design life. It is found that the regression lines for 30 per cent and 65 per cent rh may be combined, but the specimens at 90 per cent rh are significantly lower in strength at any given time. One of the MUF bonded boards performs significantly better than a second MUF board over the long term, and this gives added weight to the view that there are other factors in the make-up and production of the board that are at least as important as the resin type itself.  相似文献

Evolving agricultural policies have influenced management practices within agroecosystems, impacting available habitats for many species of wildlife. Enhancing wildlife habitat has become an explicit objective of existing agricultural policy. Thus, there is renewed focus on field borders and the use of shelterbelt agroforestry systems to achieve conservation goals in the Midwest. Two Representative Farms – a 283-ha dryland and 510-ha irrigated farm were created in Saunders County, Nebraska. The Habitat Analysis and Modeling System (HAMS) was used to describe the composition and spatial pattern of the existing farms and surrounding landscape, as well as for the landscapes surrounding selected Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) routes. Simulated land use changes resulting from the implementation of two shelterbelt scenarios, Agricultural and Wildlife, were incorporated on each Representative Farm and surrounding landscape. Landscape variables which influence breeding bird species richness and community composition as determined from BBS routes were measured on simulated farm landscapes. A more heterogeneous landscape results from implementing either scenario. The percent total woods was a significant determinant of bird species richness on the BBS routes and was important in influencing bird communities at the farm- and landscape-level. Other landscape metrics which influenced the bird community composition on BBS routes were woody edge percentages and edge density values. Policies promoting shelterbelts create edge habitats which ultimately favor birds within the Forest-edge/generalist guild while bird species in need of conservation such as grassland-field species would potentially be negatively affected. The direct exposure of fish eggs to ozonated water has generated interest as a means of ensuring pathogen-free eggs without the use of harsh chemicals. However, there are numerous knowledge gaps, including safe contact times, exposure levels, and potential long-term effects on aquaculture species in both freshwater and seawater. The effect of different ozone (O3) doses (0.5–1.0, 1.5–2.0, and 2.5–3.0 mg of O3/L for 90 s) on recently fertilized eggs of Atlantic Cod Gadus morhua and eyed eggs of Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar and Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss was evaluated in comparison with the effects of two commercial disinfectants: Perosan (0.004 mg/L) and Ovadine (100 mg/L). The impact of ozone application was evaluated based on hatching success, larval nucleic acid concentration, larval growth, and survival. Overall, results indicated that ozonation of Atlantic Cod eggs at a dose less than 3.0 mg/L for 90 s produced no negative effect on the larvae up to 30 d posthatch. Furthermore, ozonation of Atlantic Salmon and Rainbow Trout eggs generated no negative effect on the larvae, based on monitoring until 85% yolk sac re-absorption (16 d posthatch).

AIMS: To document infant feeding methods in the first six months of life in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China, 2003-2004. Some problems with breast-feeding in the area are explained. METHODS: A longitudinal study of infant feeding practices was undertaken. A total of 1219 mothers who delivered babies during 2003 and 2004 were interviewed in five hospitals or institutes, and after discharge were contacted in person or by telephone at approximately monthly intervals to obtain details of infant feeding practices. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to explore factors associated with breast-feeding initiation. RESULTS: 'Any breast-feeding' rates at discharge and at 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 and 6 months were 92.2, 91.3, 89.9, 88.8, 87.7, 86.0 and 73.0%, respectively. 'Exclusive breast-feeding' rates at discharge and at 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 and 6 months were 66.2, 47.6, 30.1, 25.8, 22.1, 13.0 and 6.2%, respectively. The main problem of breast-feeding in Xinjiang was the early introduction of formula or water. The average duration of 'exclusive breast-feeding' was 1.8 months (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.7-2.0), of 'full breast-feeding' 2.8 months (95% CI 2.7-2.9) and of 'any breast-feeding' 5.3 months (95% CI 5.2-5.4). CONCLUSIONS: Infant feeding methods in Xinjiang were documented in this study and the main problems with infant feeding in Xinjiang are discussed. Further studies are needed to identify factors associated with 'exclusive breast-feeding' and duration.  相似文献

The distribution of seabirds west of Scotland was studied relative to water masses in August 1988. Surface salinity was used to indicate the ship's position relative to the water masses described in the literature. Comparisons were made between seabird densities in Inshore Water, the Northern Coastal Current, the Southern Coastal Current and Atlantic/Hebridean Water. Seabird density varied with water mass; some species distributions suggested strong habitat associations. Water masses represent marine habitats, with different physical regimes supporting different marine life; patterns in bird distribution are likely to reflect prey distribution and availability. Manx shearwaters Puffinus puffinus, razorbills Alca torda, guillemots Uria aalge, and kittiwakes Rissa tridactyla were found mostly in Inshore Water, with lower densities in the Northern and Southern Coastal Current water. Only trace numbers of these species occurred in Atlantic/Hebridean Water. Storm petrels Hydrobates pelagicus, fulmars Fulmarus glacialis and puffins Fratercula arctica were found in very low densities in Inshore Water, and were dispersed in higher densities throughout the more oceanic areas. These data suggest that in late summer the Inshore Water of southwestern Scotland has the highest densities of seabirds potentially vulnerable in the event of an oil incident.  相似文献

Detailed observations of the behaviour of harbour seals, Phoca vitulina L., at sites within the estuaries of the Rivers Dee and Don, in north-eastern Scotland, were made over two full years between 1993 and 1996. Small numbers of grey seals, Halichoerus grypus Fab., were also present. The presence of seals within the estuaries was strongly related to season, with maximum numbers observed in winter and early spring; seals were virtually absent in June and July. The River Don was used largely as a haul-out site, while the River Dee was used predominantly as a foraging site, although it was not possible to determine whether the same seals were using the two estuaries. More seals were hauled-out on the River Don during twilight and dark than in daylight. The seals were observed to eat mostly salmonids, Salmo salar L. and S. trutta L., unidentified roundfish and flounder, Pleuronectes flesus L. The otoliths identified in scats collected at the mouth of the River Don belonged to marine species indicating that the seals were also feeding outside the estuaries. A minimum estimate is given of the numbers of large salmonids eaten in each river during the course of the year. Although no information was available on the numbers of salmonids using the rivers or the reproductive status of the fish eaten by the seals, as a cause of mortality, seal predation on large salmonids in estuaries is apparently an order of magnitude less important than mortality caused by angling within the river.  相似文献

The effects on barley starch and grain properties of four starch synthesis mutations were studied during the introgression of the mutations from diverse backgrounds into an elite variety. The lys5f (ADPglucose transporter), wax (granule-bound starch synthase), isa1 (debranching enzyme isoamylase 1) and sex6 (starch synthase IIa) mutations were introgressed into NFC Tipple to give mutant and wild-type BC2F4 families with different genomic contributions of the donor parent. Comparison of starch and grain properties between the donor parents, the BC2F4 families and NFC Tipple allowed the effects of the mutations to be distinguished from genetic background effects. The wax and sex6 mutations had marked effects on starch properties regardless of genetic background. The sex6 mutation conditioned low grain weight and starch content, but the wax mutation did not. The lys5 mutation conditioned low grain weight and starch content, but exceptionally high β-glucan contents. The isa1 mutation promotes synthesis of soluble α-glucan (phytoglycogen). Its introgression into NFC Tipple increased grain weight and total α-glucan content relative to the donor parent, but reduced the ratio of phytoglycogen to starch. This study shows that introgression of mutations into a common, commercial background provides new insights that could not be gained from the donor parent.  相似文献
