Since wheat and other annual cereal crops are often harvested for forage instead of grain in California, replacing them with perennial crops could save energy and reduce the release of heat-trapping gases. To assess the potential for perennial crops based on wheat, biomass yield and stand persistence were studied for nine wheat×wheatgrass amphiploids (8x to 14x) and five wheatgrass species (2x to 10x) over three seasons in the Central Valley, California. The 8x and 10x amphiploids died after one biomass harvest and a single summer period. In contrast, the 14x amphiploids, which were sterile, continued producing biomass over the entire period of the trial. They were also highly salt-stress tolerant with little decline in biomass production in response to an increase in salinity from 100 and 250 mM NaCl in a solution-culture study. The development of a salt-stress-tolerant perennial crop based on wheat for the California-type climate will require either a substantial improvement in perennial growth of low-ploidy (8x) amphiploids or the development of technology for efficient vegetative propagation of the sterile high-ploidy (14x) amphiploids.  相似文献

A novel kinetic-spectrophotometry method is developed for the determination of trace amounts of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in groundwater samples based on their catalytic effect on the oxidation of indigo carmine by hexacyanoferrate (III) in acetate-acetic acid medium. The absorbance was measured at 612?nm with the fixed-time method. The optimization of the operating conditions regarding concentrations of the reagents and interferences was investigated. The calibration curve is linear over the concentration range 4.0?C300???g?mL?1 of AgNPs with good precision and accuracy. The proposed method is a highly sensitive, selective, and relatively rapid assay of AgNPs at trace level. The method was applied to the determination of AgNPs in groundwater and a synthetic sample.  相似文献

Effect of wastewater irrigation was investigated on mineral composition of corn and sorghum plants in a pot experiment. The ranges for the concentration of different minerals in corn plants were 0.67–0.89% calcium (Ca), 0.38–0.58% magnesium (Mg), 0.09–1.29% sodium (Na), 0.81–1.87% nitrogen (N), 1.81–2.27% potassium (K), 0.12–0.16% phosphorus (P), 190–257 mg/kg iron (Fe), 3.5–5.6 mg/kg copper (Cu), 37.1–44.5 mg/kg manganese (Mn), 21.6–33.6 mg/kg zinc (Zn), 1.40–1.84 mg/kg molydbenum (Mo), 11.0–45.7 mg/kg lead (Pb), and 2.5–10.8 mg/kg nickel (Ni). Whereas for sorghum plants, the ranges were: 0.56–0.68% Ca, 0.19–0.32% Mg, 0.02–0.27% Na, 0.69–1.53% N, 1.40–1.89% K, 0.10–0.14% P, 190–320 mg/kg Fe, 3.8–6.0 mg/kg Cu, 29.2–37.6 mg/kg Mn, 21.1–29.9 mg/kg Zn, 2.2–3.7 mg/kg Mo, 12.3–59.0 mg/kg Pb, and 2.5–15.2 mg/kg Ni. Heavy metals such as cobalt (Co) and cadmium (Cd) were below detection limits at mg/kg levels. The concentrations of Ca, N, K, P, Cu, and Mn in corn plants were in the deficient range except for Mg, Fe, Zn, and Al. The concentrations of Ca, N, P, K, Cu, Mn, Mg, and Zn in sorghum plants were in the deficient range except for Fe and aluminum (Al). The analysis of regression indicated a strong interaction between Pb, Ni, Ca, and Fe in corn and sorghum plants. In conclusion, waste water irrigation did not increase mineral concentrations of either macro‐ and micro‐elements or heavy trace metals in corn and sorghum plants to hazardous limits according to the established standards and could be used safely for crop irrigation.  相似文献

Background:

Microglial cells act as the sentinel of the central nervous system .They are involved in neuroprotection but are highly implicated in neurodegeneration of the aging brain. When over-activated, microglia release pro-inflammatory factors, such as nitric oxide (NO) and cytokines, which are critical in eliciting neuroinflammatory responses associated with neurodegenerative diseases. This study examined whether bromelain, the pineapple-derived extract, may exert an anti-inflammatory effect in primary microglia and may be neuroprotective by regulating microglial activation.

Methods:

Following the isolation of neonatal rat primary microglial cells, the activation profile of microglia was investigated by studying the effects of bromelain (5, 10, 20, and 30 µg/ml) on the levels of NO, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) in microglia treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (1 µg/ml). Data were analyzed using Student''s t-test. P values less than 0.05 were considered to be statistically significant, compared with the LPS-treated group without bromelain.

Results:

Results showed that pretreatment of rat primary microglia with bromelain, decreased the production of NO induced by LPS (1 µg/ml) treatment in a dose-dependent manner. Bromelain (30 µg/ml) also significantly reduced the expression of iNOS at mRNA level and NF-κB at protein level. Moreover, the study of mitochondrial activity in microglia indicated that bromelain had no cytotoxicity at any of the applied doses, suggesting that the anti-inflammatory effects of bromelain are not due to cell death.

Conclusion:

Bromelain can be of potential use as an agent for alleviation of symptoms in neurodegenerative diseases.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this study, the cryopreserved spermatozoa of Epinephelus lanceolatus were transported using a novel method involving dry ice as the medium of preservation and a Styrofoam box. Five conditions were investigated for the cryopreserved sperm under different dry ice exposure times of (24, 48, and 72) h corresponding to treatment 1 (T1), 3 (T3), and 5 (T5), respectively. Meanwhile, the remaining treatments (T2 and T4) involved the same exposure to dry ice for (24 and 48) h followed by re-immersion into liquid nitrogen (LN). The performance of the cryopreserved spermatozoa of the hybrid grouper (E. fuscoguttatus ♀ × E. lanceolatus ♂) was evaluated through fertilization and hatching trials. The results showed no significant difference in fertilization for all five treatments. However, significantly poorer hatching rates than the fresh sperm were observed for spermatozoa exposed to dry ice after 48 h. This study recommends the use of the proposed method to successfully transport E. lanceolatus spermatozoa for the production of hybrid groupers via artificial insemination.  相似文献

Effects of high-pressure treatment (HPT) on the rheological parameters and gelation of iota-carrageenan (iota-Car) and mixtures of micellar casein (MC) and iota-Car have been investigated under neutral pH conditions. It was established that HPT showed no significant effect, in the presence or absence of ionic calcium, with or without initial thermal processing, on the rheology or gelation/melting temperatures of the pure iota-Car solution. However, in mixed systems containing varying concentrations of iota-Car (up to 1 wt %) and MC (up to 8 wt %), considerable changes were detected. At the higher molar ratios of MC to iota-Car, and especially at the higher pressures, the dispersions were not thermoreversible in gelation, presumably due to the strong interactions of disrupted casein micelles with iota-Car molecules, as well as due to the formation of a dominant proteinaceous network at higher concentrations of MC. The associative protein-polysaccharide interactions in these systems are highly dependent on the ionic calcium content.  相似文献

The influence of high-pressure treatment (HPT) (200-800 MPa, 5 or 20 min, at 20 degrees C) on the rheological properties of solutions of amidated low-methoxyl pectin (LMP) and its mixtures with micellar casein (MC) has been investigated in the presence and absence of sucrose. The storage modulus G' of LMP gels containing 0-55 wt % sucrose and 0.1-1 wt % LMP was found to increase significantly following HPT at >or=400 MPa. Various concentrations of LMP in the presence of different amounts of MC (0.5-12 wt %) showed contrasting types of rheological behavior. In the presence of a low concentration of LMP (<0.3 wt %), HPT was found to induce a sol-gel transformation at relatively high LMP/MC molar ratios (<4 wt % MC), to reduce values of G' and the loss modulus G' ' at intermediate LMP/MC ratios (4-10 wt % MC), and to increase the values of G' and G' ' at low LMP/MC ratios (>10 wt % MC). In contrast, in the presence of a higher amount of LMP (>0.5 wt %), it was observed that HPT enhances the values of both the storage and the loss moduli over the whole range of MC concentrations.  相似文献

Inoculation of leaf explants of Echinacea purpurea (Moench) with Agrobacterium rhizogenes induced hairy roots with the capacity to produce biologically active caffeic acid derivatives (CADs), especially cichoric acid. The kinetics of growth, the uptake of macronutrients, and the accumulation of CADs were investigated in heterotrophically cultured hairy roots for a 50 day period. A maximum of 12.2 g L(-1) dry biomass was achieved in MS nutrients supplemented with 30 g L(-1) sucrose on day 40. The mathematical relationship between hairy root growth and conductivity was established during the exponential phase in Erlenmeyer flasks. HPLC analyses of methanolic (0.1% phosphoric acid; 70:30, v/v) extracts from hairy roots revealed the presence of important CADs: cichoric acid (19.21 mg g(-1) dry biomass), caftaric acid (3.56 mg g(-1) dry biomass), and chlorogenic acid (0.93 mg g(-1) dry biomass). These results demonstrate that biotechnological production of CADs in hairy roots of E. purpurea is possible. Furthermore, these hairy root cultures offer, for the very first time, an excellent biological model to study the biosynthetic pathway of medicinally important CADs.  相似文献
