Coatings fulfill an important function in providing functionality and service life to wood surfaces. In the present study, the potential of nanocellulosic fillers toward improving waterborne wood coating mechanics is evaluated using free-standing coating films. At 2% filler content, significant improvements in static and dynamic mechanical properties were observed. The extent of these improvements was different depending on whether high-aspect-ratio cellulose nanofibrils of short cellulose nanocrystals were used. Chemical surface modification of cellulose nanofibrils did not provide further improvement. The water–vapor sorption properties of the coating films, which were also evaluated, did not show significant effects due to addition of nanocellulose, while optical transparency slightly decreased.  相似文献

Contradictory effects of simultaneous available organic C and N sources on nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitric oxide (NO) fluxes are reported in the literature. In order to clarify this controversy, laboratory experiments were conduced on two different soils, a semiarid arable soil from Spain (soil I, pH=7.5, 0.8%C) and a grassland soil from Scotland (soil II, pH=5.5, 4.1%C). Soils were incubated at two different moisture contents, at a water filled pore space (WFPS) of 90% and 40%. Ammonium sulphate, added at rates equivalent to 200 and 50 kg N ha?1, stimulated N2O and NO emissions in both soils. Under wet conditions (90% WFPS), at high and low rates of N additions, cumulative N2O emissions increased by 250.7 and 8.1 ng N2O–N g?1 in comparison to the control, respectively, in soil I and by 472.2 and 2.1 ng N2O–N g?1, respectively, in soil II. NO emissions only significantly increased in soil I at the high N application rate with and without glucose addition and at both 40% and 90% WFPS. In both soils additions of glucose together with the high N application rate (200 kg N ha?1) reduced cumulative N2O and NO emissions by 94% and 55% in soil I, and by 46% and 66% in soil II, respectively. These differences can be explained by differences in soil properties, including pH, soil mineral N and total and dissolved organic carbon content. It is speculated that nitrifier denitrification was the main source of NO and N2O in the C-poor Spanish soil, and coupled nitrification–denitrification in the C-rich Scottish soil.  相似文献

Accelerated erosion caused by deforestation and soil degradation has become the primary factor limiting sustainable utilization of soil resources on the Loess Plateau of Northwestern China. We studied the physical, chemical, and microbiological processes of soil degradation along a chronosequence of deforestation in the Ziwuling area of northwestern Shaanxi province. The results indicated that soil wet aggregate stability, mean aggregate diameter decreased with years following deforestation. Accelerated erosion resulted in soil nutrient loss, and a decrease in soil enzyme activities including notable losses of total soil N, organic C, alkaline phosphatase activity, and invertase activity. During the early time period, the rates of total soil N, organic C, alkaline phosphatase activity, and invertase activity decreasing were rapid and gradually decreased with deforestation years. Increased use of nitrogen fertilizers made determination of soil quality based on measured NO3–N and NH4–N inconclusive. The differences in measured parameters between the topsoil and subsoil horizons decreased with time since deforestation, and we concluded that soil erosion was the primary process responsible for the degradation of measured soil physical, chemical, and microbiological properties.  相似文献

Difloxacin (DIF) belongs to the fluoroquinolones, a frequently detected group of antibiotics in the environment. It is excreted in pig manure to a large extent and may consequently reach soils in potentially effective concentrations via manuring. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of DIF-spiked manure on microbial communities and selected functions in soils in a microcosm experiment up to 1 month after application. To test a dose dependency of the effects, three different concentrations of DIF (1, 10 and 100 mg/kg of soil) were used. Microcosms with application of pure manure, as well as untreated microcosms served as control. The addition of pure manure resulted in an increase of microbial biomass and soil respiration as well as a reduced bacteria/fungi ratio. Due to the fast and strong immobilisation of DIF, effects of the antbiotic compound were only visible up to 8 days after application (microbial biomass; respiration; potential denitrification; ratio of bacteria/fungi). As expected these short-term effects resulted in reduced potential denitrification rates as well as a reduced bacteria/fungal ratio in the treatments were DIF has been applied. Surprisingly, microbial biomass values as well as respiration rates were increased by DIF application. Other parameters like nitrate and ammonium content in soil were not influenced by DIF application at any time point. Long-term effects (32 days after application) were only visible for the potential nitrification rates. For those parameters that were influenced by the DIF application a clear dose dependency could not be described.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: To establish bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) public health protection measures it is important to precisely define the cattle tissues considered as specified risk materials (SRM). To date, in pre-clinical BSE infected cattle, no evidence of the BSE agent had been found in the gut outside of the ileal Peyer's Patches. This study was undertaken to determine when and where the pathological prion protein (PrPSc) and/or BSE infectivity can be found in the small intestine of cattle 4 to 6 months of age, orally challenged with BSE. Samples of the jejunum, the ileum and the ileocaecal junction from 46 BSE infected cattle, culled from 1 up to 44 months post infection (mpi) were examined by immunohistochemistry. Samples from cattle 8 mpi to 20 mpi were additionally studied by PTA Western blot, rapid tests, and by mouse (TgbovXV) bioassay. In doing so nearly all of the cattle, from 4 up to 44 mpi, had detectable amounts of PrPSc and/or infectivity in the distal ileum. In the distal ileum clear time-dependent variations were visible concerning the amount of PrPSc, the tissue structures affected, and the cells involved. BSE infectivity was found not only in the ileum and ileocaecal junction but also in the jejunum. The systematic approach of this study provides new data for qualitative and quantitative risk assessments and allows defining bovine SRM more precisely.  相似文献

The aim of this study was the development of a method for the simultaneous determination and differentiation of fatty acid esters of 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD esters) and glycidol (glycidyl esters) in different foodstuffs. The esters were isolated from fat-rich food samples using a single extraction step and separated from interfering substances. For differentiation of 3-MCPD esters and glycidyl esters the glycidol moiety was converted into 3-methoxypropane-1,2-diol (3-MPD) by acidic alcoholysis. Subsequent determination was achieved by isotope dilution GC-MS after transesterification using an isotope-labeled 3-MCPD ester as internal standard. During optimization of the procedure, critical parameters affecting simultaneous determination and differentiation of these analytes were investigated. Rapid ester cleavage and derivatization at ambient temperature proved to be essential for the simultaneous determination of these analytes. The method was validated for various fat-rich foodstuffs such as bakery products, sweets, gravy, and soup powders as well as edible fats and oils. LODs of 8 and 15 μg/kg (fat-rich foodstuffs) as well as 50 and 65 μg/kg (edible oils and fats) were obtained for 3-MCPD esters and glycidyl esters, respectively. Recoveries for 3-MCPD esters and glycidyl esters ranged within 98 ± 4 and 88 ± 2% in all tested foodstuffs (0.05-2.5 mg/kg) and within 99 ± 16 and 93 ± 13% for edible oils and fats (0.15-3 mg/kg) over a wide concentration range. These results proved an accurate and differentiated determination of 3-MCPD esters and glycidyl esters with successful application to the fast screening of samples, avoiding tedious and laborious sample preparation.  相似文献

In the present study, we addressed the question whether cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) or complex C3G-rich blackberry extracts affect human topoisomerases with special emphasis on the contribution of the potential degradation products phloroglucinol aldehyde (PGA) and protocatechuic acid (PCA). In HT29 colon carcinoma cells a C3G-rich blackberry extract suppressed camptothecin- (CPT-) or doxorubicin- (DOX-) induced stabilization of the covalent DNA-topoisomerase intermediate, thus antagonizing the effects of these classical topoisomerase poisons on DNA integrity. As a single compound, C3G (100 μM) decreased the DNA-damaging effects of CPT as well, but did not significantly affect those induced by DOX. At the highest applied concentration (100 μM), cyanidin protected DNA from CPT- and DOX-induced damage. Earlier reports on DNA-damaging properties of cyanidin were found to result most likely from the formation of hydrogen peroxide as an artifact in the cell culture medium when the incubation was performed in the absence of catalase. The suppression of hydrogen peroxide accumulation, achieved by the addition of catalase, demonstrated that cyanidin does not exhibit DNA-damaging properties in HT29 cells (up to 100 μM). The observed effects on topoisomerase interference and DNA protection against CPT or DOX were clearly limited to the parent compound and were not observed for the potential cyanidin degradation products PGA and PCA.  相似文献

Every year, influenza viruses spread around the world, infecting the respiratory systems of countless humans and animals, causing illness and even death. Severe influenza infection is associated with pulmonary epithelial damage and endothelial dysfunction leading to acute lung injury (ALI). There is evidence that an aggressive cytokine storm and cell damage in lung capillaries as well as endothelial/platelet interactions contribute to vascular leakage, pro-thrombotic milieu and infiltration of immune effector cells. To date, treatments for ALI caused by influenza are limited to antiviral drugs, active ventilation or further symptomatic treatments. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms of influenza-mediated pathogenesis, permissive animal models and histopathological changes of lung tissue in both mice and men and compare it with histological and electron microscopic data from our own group. We highlight the molecular and cellular interactions between pulmonary endothelium and platelets in homeostasis and influenza-induced pathogenesis. Finally, we discuss novel therapeutic targets on platelets/endothelial interaction to reduce or resolve ALI.  相似文献
