Natural pyrrhotites, when studied by high resolution electron microscopy, yield crystallographic information on a unit cell scale. Structural heterogeneity is prominent. The many reported superstructures are interpretable through an antiphase model. The 5C pyrrhotite superstructure results from an ordered sequence of antiphase domains while the higher temperature NC type results from a disordered sequence.  相似文献

The time scales over which inner solar system objects accreted and differentiated are unclear because the isotopic systems of many meteorites are disturbed. 182Hf decays to 182W with a half-life of 9 million years and is a particularly useful chronometer because both elements are highly refractory and immobile. Tungsten isotopic data for IIA, IIIA, IVA, and anomalous iron meteorites and H, L, and LL chondrites indicate that their parent bodies accreted rapidly and segregated metal within just a few million years.  相似文献

Being downwind of eastern and midwestern industrial centers, the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest offers a prime location to monitor long-term trends in atmospheric chemistry. Continuous measurements of precipitation chemistry during the last 10 yr provide a measure of recent changes in precipitation inputs of H ion. The weighted average pH of precipitation during 1964–65 to 1973–74 was 4.14, with a minimum annual value of 4.03 in 1970–71 and a maximum annual value of 4.21 in 1973–74. The sum of all cations except H ion decreased from 51 μeq 1?1 in 1964–65 to 23 μeq 1?1 in 1973–74 providing a significant drop in neutralizing capacity during this period. Based upon regression analysis, the input in equivalents of H ion and nitrate increased by 1.4-fold and 2.3-fold respectively, from 1964–65 to 1973–74. Input of all other ions either decreased or showed no trend. Based upon a stoichiometric formation process in which a sea-salt, anionic component is subtracted from the total anions in precipitation, SO4 =, contribution to acidity dropped from 83% to 66%, whereas NO3 ? increased from 15% to 30% during 1964–65 to 1973–74. The increased annual input of H ion at Hubbard Brook during the past 10 yr is highly correlated with the increased input of nitrate in precipitation.  相似文献

Octopuses (Octopus vulgaris) landed from commercial fishing were sampled and the concentrations of lead, calcium and strontium, in digestive gland, branchial heart, gills, mantle and arms, were determined using PIXE (particle-induced X-ray emission). Lead was detected in all tissues, although not in samples from all animals analysed. Female octopuses accumulated more lead in digestive gland than did males. The digestive gland index, an indicator of nutritional status, showed a negative correlation with lead concentration in both sexes. There were positive correlations between the concentration of lead and those of calcium and strontium in digestive gland and a negative correlation between lead and calcium in branchial heart tissue. Concentrations of calcium in arms were lower in autumn and spring than in winter and summer. Lead content increased with increasing body weight and mantle length so we can conclude that lead continues to accumulate during the animal’s life. Concentrations of lead in two samples were higher than the maximum legally permitted concentration of lead in food.  相似文献

This paper provides an overview of the sources, the estimation methodology, and the relative amounts of natural hydrocarbon and NOx emissions. The most recent estimate of natural nonmethane hydrocarbon (NMHC) emissions for the United States is 28 Tg yr?1. This compares with 20 Tg yr?1 for anthropogenic NMHC sources. The southeastern and southcentral portions of the United States account for approximately 43% of the annual U.S. natural NMHC estimate. These emissions exhibit strong diurnal and seasonal dependencies related to temperature, solar radiation, and active biomass. Forests are the primary vegetative source of hydrocarbons. The major sources of natural NOX emissions in North America are biomass burning, lightning, and microbial activity in soil. We present a comparison of hourly gridded NOX emissions from lightning, soil, and man-made sources for the northeastern United States. We also provide results from preliminary investigations of the sensitivity of O3 predictions from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Regional Oxidant Model to natural NMHC and nitric oxide emissions.  相似文献

Neonatal calves were thymectomized when 4 to 10 days old and treated briefly with antilymphocyte globulin. Non-thymectomized calves were treated with normal horse globulin or not treated with antilymphocyte globulin. The lymph nodes were examined at selected times by light microscopy and immunofluorescence and after necropsy.The prescapular lymph nodes at 5 weeks represented normal, normally reactive and abnormally reactive structure. Peripheral lymph nodes from 5-week-old calves not treated by thymectomy or antilymphocyte globulin had a low level of lymphopoietic activity. The thymus intact calves treated with normal horse globulin had reactive lymphoid hyperplasia primarily of the cortex. The thymectomized, antilymphocyte globulin treated calves at this age had increased primary follicle activity and depletion of paracortical areas in peripheral lymph nodes. The degree of lymphoid hyperplasia corresponded to the relative frequency of cells with surface immunoglobulin at 5 weeks of age.The lymph nodes and spleen collected at necropsy at 16 to 26 weeks did not segregate into three distinct categories, probably a reflection of the additional stimulation on the immune system by experimental and natural antigen exposure. The differences between treatments were not observed at the time of necropsy. These morphological observations strongly support the conclusion that the calves were affected by neonatal thymectomy, but had recovered from the effect of thymectomy by 16 to 26 weeks of age.  相似文献
