The objectives of this study were to evaluate the performance of the Cropping System Model (CSM)-CERES (Crop-Environment Resource Synthesis)-Rice for simulating growth and yield of rice under irrigated conditions for a semiarid environment in Pakistan and to determine the impact of plant density and irrigation regime on grain yield and economic returns. The crop simulation model was evaluated with experimental data collected in 2000 and 2001 in Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan. The experiment utilized a randomized complete block design with three replications and included three plant densities (one seedling hill?1, PD1; two seedlings hill?1, PD2; and three seedlings hill?1, PD3) and five irrigation regimes (625 mm, I1; 775 mm, I2; 925 mm, I3; 1075 mm, I4; and 1225 mm, I5). To determine the most appropriate combination of plant densities and irrigation regimes, four plant densities from one seedling hill?1 to four seedlings hill?1 and 17 irrigation regimes ranging from 0 to 1600 mm, for a total of 68 different scenarios, were simulated for 35 years of historical daily weather data. The evaluation of CSM-CERES-Rice showed that the model was able to accurately simulate growth and yield of rice for irrigated semiarid conditions, with an average error of 11% between simulated and observed grain yield. The results of the biophysical analysis showed that the combination of the two seedlings hill?1 plant density and the 1,300 mm irrigation regime produced the highest yield compared to all other scenarios. Furthermore, the economic analysis through the Mean-Gini Dominance (MGD) also showed the superiority of this treatment compared to the other treatment combinations. The mean monetary return ranged from ?47 to 1,265 $ ha?1 among all 68 scenarios. However, to be able to furnish the demand of rice grain for local consumption and to increase export, there is a need to expand this technology among the rice growers of other rice producing areas in Pakistan through extension workers.  相似文献

The Blackbuck has suffered rapid decline at the hand of Man during the last half-century, having been exterminated in many areas in which it was formerly plentiful. However, it is said to occur still fairly widely in small populations within its former range in India. In Cholistan Desert in Pakistan ot was indigenous but has disappeared during the last two decades. Where introduced in Texas it is flourishing. Ten Blackbuck were reintroduced from Texas to a small enclosure in the Lal Suhanra Sanctuary, Pakistan, in April 1970, and more stock is expected to be introduced into a near-by larger fenced enclosure of 518·4 ha. Food habits of Blackbuck were studied and the food was estimated in the latter area on 3–8 April 1971. Out of 22 commonly-occuring plant species in the habitat, 19 were eaten. Of these, four or five were favourite food plants of Blackbuck. The quantity of favourite food was estimated and an idea was formed of the order of magnitude of stocking that could be done in this enclosure.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the synergistic effects of exogenously applied proline and glycinebetaine (betaine) in antioxidant defense and methylglyoxal (MG) detoxification system in mung bean seedlings subjected to salt stress (200 mmol·L−1 NaCl, 48 h). Seven-day-old mung bean seedlings were exposed to salt stress after pre-treatment with proline or betaine. Salt stress caused a sharp increase in reduced glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) content in leaves, while the GSH/GSSG ratio and ascorbate (AsA) content decreased significantly. The glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glyoxalase II (Gly II) activities were increased in response to salt stress, while the monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), catalase (CAT) and glyoxalase I (Gly I) activities sharply decreased with an associated increase in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and lipid peroxidation level (MDA). Proline or betaine pre-treatment had little influence on nonenzymatic and enzymatic components as compared to those of the untreated control. However, proline or betaine pre-treated salt-stressed seedlings showed an increase in AsA, GSH content, GSH/GSSG ratio and maintained higher activities of APX, DHAR, GR, GST, GPX, CAT, Gly I and Gly II involved in ROS and MG detoxification system as compared to those of the untreated control and mostly also salt-stressed plants with a simultaneous decrease in GSSG content, H2O2 and MDA level. These results together with our previous results suggest that coordinate induction of antioxidant defense and glyoxalase system by proline and betaine rendered the plants tolerant to salinity-induced oxidative stress in a synergistic fashion.  相似文献

An 11-month-old, beefmaster bull presented with anorexia and signs of respiratory disease. Physical examination, thoracic ultrasonography and radiography, and pleural fluid analysis indicated pericarditis and septic neutrophilic pleuropneumonia. Postmortem findings were abomasal adherence to the diaphragm, a fibrotic fistulous tract connecting the abomasum and pleural cavity, granulomatous abomasitis, granulomatous pericarditis, and fibrinonecrotic pleuritis.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted with Starcross layers to evaluate the replacement value of sunflower meal (SFM) for cotton seed meal (CSM) and sesame meal (SM). The birds (aged 24 weeks) were given 4 isonitrogenous and isocaloric rations containing 0, 5, 10 and 15% dehulled sunflower meal. The substitution of SFM for CSM and SM did not generally affect the egg production, feed consumption, feed conversion nor did it have any effect on the quality of eggs as measured by Haugh Units (HU) and yolk index. Egg shell thickness, however, improved by increasing dietary levels of SFM. The feed costs per hen were generally lower for the SFM group since SFM was cheaper than CSM and SM.  相似文献

The nucleobase-cation-symport-1 (NCS1) transporters are essential components of salvage pathways for nucleobases and related metabolites. Here, we report the 2.85-angstrom resolution structure of the NCS1 benzyl-hydantoin transporter, Mhp1, from Microbacterium liquefaciens. Mhp1 contains 12 transmembrane helices, 10 of which are arranged in two inverted repeats of five helices. The structures of the outward-facing open and substrate-bound occluded conformations were solved, showing how the outward-facing cavity closes upon binding of substrate. Comparisons with the leucine transporter LeuT(Aa) and the galactose transporter vSGLT reveal that the outward- and inward-facing cavities are symmetrically arranged on opposite sides of the membrane. The reciprocal opening and closing of these cavities is synchronized by the inverted repeat helices 3 and 8, providing the structural basis of the alternating access model for membrane transport.  相似文献

Although silicon (Si) has showed its potential role in mitigating abiotic stress-induced damages in many plant species its role in coordinated induction of antioxidant defense is yet to be elucidated. Therefore, we studied rapeseed (Brassica napus) seedlings applied with exogenous Si for changes occurring in antioxidant defense and glyoxalase systems. Seedlings (12-day-old) grown semi-hydroponically were exposed to Si (silicon dioxide, SiO2; 1?mM) solely and in combination with NaCl (100 and 200?mM) for 48?h. Salinity created oxidative damage by increasing H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents resulting in disruption of antioxidant defense system and in arousing methylglyoxal (MG) toxicity by the down-regulation of glyoxalase enzyme activities. Exogenous Si treatment showed reduction of both H2O2 and MDA contents and up-regulation of antioxidant components including the activities of related enzymes (APX, MDHAR, DHAR, GR, GST, GPX and CAT) and the contents of AsA and GSH. Enhanced activities of glyoxalase I (Gly I) and glyoxalase II (Gly II) detoxified the toxic MG. Thus, this study clearly indicates that Si improved plant tolerance to salinity stress through enhancement of both antioxidant defense and glyoxalase systems that led to reduced oxidative damage and MG toxicity.  相似文献
