Are Indicators for Critical Load Exceedance Related to Forest Condition?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of the (Ca?+?Mg?+?K)/Al and the Ca/Al ratios in soil solution as chemical criteria for forest condition in critical load calculations for forest ecosystems. The tree species Norway spruce, Sitka spruce and beech were studied in an area with high deposition of sea salt and nitrogen in the south-western part of Jutland, Denmark. Throughfall and soil water were collected monthly and analysed for pH, NO3-N, NH4-N, K, Ca, Mg, DOC and Altot. Organic Al was estimated using DOC concentrations. Increment and defoliation were determined annually, and foliar element concentrations were determined every other year. The throughfall deposition was highest in the Sitka spruce stand (maximum of 40 kg N ha?1yr?1) and lowest in the beech stand (maximum of 11 kg N ha?1yr?1). The Sitka spruce stand leached on average 12 kg N ha?1yr?1 during the period 1988–1997 and leaching increased throughout the period. Only small amounts of N were leached from the Norway spruce stand whereas almost no N was leached from the beech stand. For all tree species, both (Ca?+?Mg?+?K)/Al and Ca/Al ratios decreased in soil solution at 90 cm depth between 1989 and 1999, which was mainly caused by a decrease in concentrations of base cations. The toxic inorganic Al species were by far the most abundant Al species at 90 cm depth. At the end of the measurement period, the (Ca?+?Mg?+?K)/Al ratio was approximately 1 for all species while the Ca/Al ratio was approximately 0.2. The lack of a trend in the increment rates, a decrease in defoliation as well as sufficient levels of Mg and Ca in foliage suggested an unchanged or even slightly improved health condition, despite the decreasing and very low (Ca?+?Mg?+?K)/Al and Ca/Al ratios. The suitability of these soil solution element ratios is questioned as the chemical criteria for soil acidification under field conditions in areas with elevated deposition rates of sea salts, in particular Mg.  相似文献

Because of public and political concern for the quality of surface and ground water, leaching of nitrate is of special concern in many countries. To evaluate the effects of tillage and growth of a catch crop on nitrate leaching, two field trials were conducted in spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) under temperate coastal climate conditions. On a coarse sand (1987–1992), ploughing in autumn or in spring in combination with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) as a catch crop was evaluated. Furthermore, rotovating and direct drilling were included. The experiment was conducted on a 19-year-old field trial with continuous production of spring barley. On a sandy loam (1988–1992), ploughing in autumn or in spring in combination with stubble cultivation and perennial ryegrass, in addition to minimum tillage, was evaluated in a newly established field trial. For calculation of nitrate leaching, soil water isolates from depths of 0.8 or 1.0 m were taken using ceramic cups. No significant effect of tillage was found on the coarse sand; however, a significant effect of tillage was found on the sandy loam, where leaching from autumn ploughed plots without stubble cultivation was 16 kg N ha−1 year−1 higher than leaching from spring ploughed plots. Leaching was significantly less when stubble cultivation in autumn was omitted. Leaching on both soil types was significantly reduced by the growth of a catch crop which was ploughed under in autumn or in spring. It was concluded that soil cultivation increased leaching on the sandy loam but not on the coarse sand, and that the growth of perennial ryegrass as a catch crop reduced leaching on both soil types, particularly when ryegrass was ploughed under in spring.  相似文献

The southeastern Piedmont of the USA was severely gullied during the early 20th century. A thick canopy established by reforestation in many areas now inhibits the identification or mapping of gullies by aerial photography or other conventional remote sensing methods. An Airborne Laser-Scanning (ALS or LiDAR) mapping mission flown for the U.S. Forest Service in April, 2004 acquired bare-Earth topographic data. This paper tests the ability of the ALS topographic data to identify headwater channels and gullies for two branching gully systems in forested areas and to extract gully morphologic information. Comparisons are made with field traverses using differential GPS and reference cross sections measured by leveling surveys. At the gully network scale, LiDAR data provide accurate maps – the best available – with robust detection of small gullies except where they are narrow or parallel and closely spaced. Errors in mapping channel location and network topological connectivity under forest canopy increase with attempts to identify smaller features such as large rills. The ability of LiDAR data to map gullies and channels in a forested landscape should improve channel-network maps and topological models. At the gully reach scale, attempts to use LiDAR data to extract gully cross-section morphologic information under forest canopy were less successful due to systematic underestimation of gully depths and overestimation of gully top widths. Limited morphologic accuracy of the data set at this scale may be due to low bare-Earth point densities, shadowing of gully bottoms, and filtering of topographic discontinuities during post-processing. The ALS data used in this study are not suitable for detailed morphometric analysis or subtle change detection to monitor gullies or develop sediment budgets. Data collection may be improved by orienting flights over gullies and with increased point densities through improved scanner technology or better filtering and software capabilities to differentiate between vegetation and ground surfaces.  相似文献

Several studies have focused on the formation and losses of dissolved organic matter in forest systems, whereas a limited number have dealt with this aspect in agricultural soils. The purpose of this study was to estimate the leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON), with focus on the period after cultivating grass-clover swards. Grass-clovers were ploughed in the spring prior to sowing cereals followed by either catch crops or bare soil. The concentrations of DOC and DON decreased with soil depth and ranged at 90-cm soil depth between 7 and 21 mg C L−1 and between 1 and 3 mg N L−1, respectively, in a sandy loam soil, and between 16 and 63 mg C L−1 and between 1 and 10 mg N L−1, respectively, in a coarse sandy soil. The resulting DOC/DON ratios were in the range between 2 and 42, with higher values in the coarse sandy soil than in the sandy loam soil. The total percolation was 218 mm in the sandy loam soil and 596–645 mm in the coarse sandy soil, which resulted in an annual leaching of 22–40 kg DOC ha−1 year−1 and 3–4 kg DON ha−1 year−1 in the sandy loam soil, and 174–310 kg DOC ha−1 year−1 and 10–31 kg DON ha−1 year−1 in the coarse sandy soil. It was shown that higher amounts of DOC were lost by leaching under the catch crops than from bare soil, that losses of DON were higher from bare soil than from soils with catch crops and that DON contributed significantly to the total N loss. Thus, DON needs to be taken into account in N-balance calculations.  相似文献

The contents of pnenolic acids and ferulic acid dehydrodimers were quantified by HPLC analysis after alkaline hydrolysis in kernels of 17 rye (Secale cereale L.) varieties grown in one location in Denmark during 1997 and 1998. Significant variations (P < 0.05) with regard to the concentration of the analyzed components were observed among the different rye varieties and also between different harvest years. However, the content of phenolic acids in the analyzed rye varieties was narrow compared to cereals such as wheat and barley. The concentration of ferulic acid, the most abundant phenolic acid ranged from 900 to 1170 microgram g(-1) dry matter. The content in sinapic acid ranged from 70 to 140 microgram g(-1) dry matter, p-coumaric acid ranged from 40 to 70 microgram g(-1) dry matter, and caffeic, p-hydroxybenzoic, protocatechuic, and vanillic acids were all detected in concentrations less than 20 microgram g(-1) dry matter. The most abundant ferulic acid dehydrodimer 8-O-4 -DiFA was quantified in concentrations from 130 to 200 microgram g(-1) dry matter followed by 8,5 -DiFA benzofuran form (50-100 microgram g(-1) dry matter), 5,5 -DiFA (40-70 microgram g(-1) dry matter), and 8,5 -DiFA (20-40 microgram g(-1) dry matter).  相似文献

Atmospheric emissions of fly ash and SO2 from lignite-fired power plants strongly affect large forest areas in Germany. The impact of different deposition loads on the microbial biomass and enzyme activities was studied at three forest sites (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) along an emission gradient of 3, 6, and 15 km downwind of a coal-fired power plant (sites Ia, II, and III, respectively), representing high, moderate and low emission rates. An additional site (site Ib) at a distance of 3 km from the power plant was chosen to study the influence of forest type on microbial parameters in coniferous forest soils under fly ash and SO2 emissions. Soil microbial biomass C and N, CO2 evolved and activities of l-asparaginase, l-glutaminase, β -glucosidase, acid phosphatase and arylsulfatase (expressed on dry soil and organic C basis) were determined in the forest floor (L, Of and Oh horizon) and mineral top soil (0-10 cm). The emission-induced increases in ferromagnetic susceptibility, soil pH, concentrations of mobile (NH4NO3 extractable) Cd, Cr, and Ni, effective cation exchange capacity and base saturation in the humus layer along the 15 km long transect significantly (P<0.05) reflected the effect of past depositions of alkaline fly ash. Soil microbial and biochemical parameters were significantly (P<0.05) affected by chronic fly ash depositions. The effect of forest type (i.e. comparison of sites Ia and Ib) on the studied parameters was generally dominated by the deposition effect. Alkaline depositions significantly (P<0.05) decreased the microbial biomass C and N, microbial biomass C-to-N ratios and microbial biomass C-to-organic C ratios. Microbial respiration, metabolic quotient (qCO2) and the activities of l-asparaginase, l-glutaminase, β-glucosidase, acid phosphatase and arylsulfatase were increased by long-term depositions from the power plants. Acid phosphatase had the highest specific (enzyme activities expressed per unit organic C) activity values among the enzymes studied and arylsulfatase the lowest. The responses of the microbial biomass and soil respiration data to different atmospheric deposition loads were mainly controlled by the content of organic C and cation exchange capacity, while those of enzyme activities were governed by the soil pH and concentrations of mobile heavy metals. We concluded that chronic fly ash depositions decrease litter decomposition by influencing specific microbial and enzymatic processes in forest soils.  相似文献

A fast (12 min) high-performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) method for the separation of neutral lipid class hydroperoxides in the oil phases from fish oil enriched mayonnaises was developed. Detection and quantification were performed using the postcolumn fluorometric (FL) diphenyl-1-pyrenylphosphine oxidation principle. The reproducibilities judged by intra- and inter-assay variations were 0.64 and 7.2%, respectively. The HPSEC-FL method was applied to assess the effect of supplementations with emulsifier, gallic acid, and EDTA on the oxidative processes in the mayonnaises during storage. Substantial amounts of hydroperoxy triacylglycerols (TAGOOH) and cholesterol esters (CEOOH), together with traces of TAGOOH-dimers, were detected. All supplementations significantly decreased the levels of TAGOOH and to a lesser degree CEOOH. Supplementations with EDTA and gallic acid resulted in constant and slightly increasing levels of TAGOOH, respectively, thus affecting the oxidation mechanisms seen in reference mayonnaise. The emulsifier Panodan TR DATEM reduced the levels of TAGOOH as compared to the appropriate controls.  相似文献

Recently, bioresponse-guided fractionation of black tea infusions indicated that neither the high molecular weight thearubigens nor the theaflavins, but a series of 14 flavon-3-ol glycopyranosides besides some catechins, might be important contributors to black tea taste. To further bridge the gap between pure structural chemistry and human taste perception, in the present investigation 51 putative taste compounds have been quantified in a black tea infusion, and their dose-over-threshold (Dot) factors have been calculated on the basis of a dose/threshold relationship. To confirm these quantitative results, an aqueous taste model was prepared by blending aqueous solutions of 15 amino acids, 14 flavonol-glycosides, 8 flavan-3-ols, 5 theaflavins, 5 organic acids, 3 sugars, and caffeine in their "natural" concentrations. Sensory analyses revealed that the taste profile of this artificial cocktail did not differ significantly from the taste profile of the authentic tea infusion. To further narrow the number of key taste compounds, finally, taste omission experiments have been performed, on the basis of which a reduced recombinate was prepared containing the bitter-tasting caffeine, nine velvety astringent flavonol-3-glycosides, and the puckering astringent catechin as well as the astringent and bitter epigallocatechin-3-gallate. The taste profile of this reduced recombinate differed not significantly from that of the complete taste recombinate, thus confirming these 12 compounds as the key taste compounds of the tea infusion. Additional sensory studies demonstrated for the first time that the flavanol-3-glycosides not only impart a velvety astringent taste sensation to the oral cavity but also contribute to the bitter taste of tea infusions by amplifying the bitterness of caffeine.  相似文献
