1. The effects of propranolol (10 mg/kg) on plasma cholesterol, glucose, corticosterone and free fatty acids, on adrenal mass and cholesterol content and on body temperature were determined over a 24‐h period in 3‐week‐old Light Sussex chicks.

2. Changes in plasma cholesterol were equivocal, though there was perhaps a trend towards hypercholesteraemia.

3. Birds became hypoglycaemic within an hour but were hyper‐glycaemic between 2 and 4 h. At 24 h they were normoglycaemic.

4. Plasma corticosterone was increased markedly at 1 h but was decreased compared with the control at 2 h (P<0.01). Thereafter the concentration was in the normal range.

5. There was an enhanced hyperlipacidaemia in the treated birds after 1 h.

6. Adrenal cholesterol stores were decreased by 10% at 4 h but were unaffected at all other times.

7. Colonic temperature decreased by 1–6 °C after 2 h but was normal by4h.

8. It is concluded that propranolol has mild stressor activity which is lost within 24 h.  相似文献

1. The effects of reserpine on plasma glucose, FFA and cholesterol and on adrenal cholesterol were determined in 1‐ and 21‐d‐old chicks over a 24‐h period.

2. Irrespective of age, reserpinised chicks became hyperglycaemic and hypocholesteraemic, their stores of adrenal cholesterol were depleted and the mobilisation of the lipid was impaired. The response of the older bird was quantitatively larger than that of the younger bird.

3. Propranolol prevented the increase in plasma glucose concentration seen 1 h after reserpine but it did not affect subsequent changes.

4. It is concluded that reserpine acts as a stressor and it is shown that its effects have not been entirely overcome after 24 h.  相似文献

1. Fear‐related behaviour was measured in individually‐housed Japanese quail which had received either untreated drinking water (UDW) or a vitamin C solution (ascorbyl‐2‐polyphosphate, APP, 1 g L‐ascorbic acid/1) for 1 or 4 d. Behavioural tests were carried out at 24 or 27 d of age. Water consumption was measured daily and plasma ascorbic acid (AA) content was assayed after differential treatment for 1 or 4 d.

2. The quail in the APP treatment groups drank significantly more than did those receiving untreated drinking water.

3. Supplementation with APP raised plasma AA concentrations substantially above those found in UDW quail. The lower AA concentrations found after APP treatment for 4 d rather than one may have reflected either inter‐assay variation or limited intestinal absorption following excess ingestion.

4. Quail treated with APP showed less home‐cage avoidance of a novel object and shorter tonic immobility fear reactions than did the UDW birds. The UDW quail showed remarkably similar avoidance and TI scores on test days 1 and 4. Conversely, continued treatment with APP further reduced avoidance scores but, although TI durations fell slightly with continued treatment there were no significant day effects.

5. It was concluded that APP supplementation can reduce underlying fearfulness but that it may not be necessary to continue treatment for longer than 24 h immediately prior to a known frightening event.  相似文献

Abstract

The short‐term effects of stocking rate (AUE ha?1) and cattle‐to‐sheep ratio on the extent and severity of patch grazing and on patch size were evaluated. The extent of patch grazing was proportional to stocking rate, and livestock species had a small but significant effect. Patch size was also a function of stocking rate. Cattle and sheep had similar effects on patch size distribution when stocked at the same number of AUE ha?1. The severity of grazing within a patch was influenced by both stocking rate and cattle‐to‐sheep ratio. Recommendations that cattle should be grazed together with sheep and that cattle should be in greater proportion (in terms of AUE ha?1) than sheep, which are aimed at limiting the severity of grazing by sheep, are supported. However, severe grazing within patches is an inevitable consequence of sheep grazing irrespective of the stocking rate or cattle‐to‐sheep ratio applied.  相似文献

This article on the short‐term effects of veld fertilization in the Bankenveld, deals with the effects of nitrogenous, phosphatic and potassic fertilization, and stocking rates on beef, mutton and wool production. Increased beef production was obtained by applying nitrogenous (linear to 80 kg N/ha) and phosphatic fertilizer to the veld. Fertilization influenced the production of merino sheep less than that of cattle.

Production per animal decreased and that per unit area increased (to a certain point) as a result of increased stocking rates. The expression of these results as MLU/ha or as ha/MLU influenced the form of the response obtained.

Problems were encountered in utilizing fertilized veld, which influenced the economics of the practice. In spite of poor utilization, on some treatments, it appears that veld fertilization can be profitable in its initial stages.  相似文献

1. Growing male chickens of broiler and layer strains were allowed to eat either a high‐protein food (HP) or a low‐protein food (LP) for 10 min after an overnight fast and then offered a choice between HP and LP. During the next hour they ate significandy more of the food other than die initial meal. Similar results were obtained when there was a gap of 45 min without food between the initial meal and the choice period.

2. When the initial meal was given by tube into the crop, followed by 45 min without food, there was no significant effect on subsequent diet selection. These results show that it is necessary for the birds to eat the food themselves for it to exert its effect on subsequent choice.

3. Birds with experience of eating two foods identical in nutrient composition but different in colour did not select either food in preference to the other following an initial meal of one alone. This is evidence against the possibility that neophagia accounts for the results of the first two experiments. When an initial meal of low protein food was followed by a choice of high and low protein foods, birds ate a greater proportion of the high protein when it was placed on the opposite side of the cage from that in which the initial meal was given. Thus they are not choosing a food simply by its position within the cage.

4. To see the extent to which broilers can extend their ability to compensate for protein content over several weeks, male broilers were given one of 4 treatments from 5 to 10 weeks of age: (A) HP and LP concurrendy; (B) HP and LP on alternate days; (C) HP in the morning and LP in the afternoon, (D) LP in the morning and HP in the afternoon. There was no significant effect of treatment on food intake, body weight gain or carcase protein content but carcases were significantly less fat after treatment (B) than treatment (D).

5. It is concluded that growing broiler chicks can compensate well for periods of access to only a low‐protein food, by subsequent intake of a high‐protein food, and lice versa, as long as they are able to gauge the sensory properties of the foods. Offering two complementary foods in alternating half‐day periods is an effective method of choice‐feeding, allowing birds to select a diet to meet the requirements for growth.  相似文献

The diagnosis and treatment of a case of crimidine poisoning in a dog are described. Presenting signs were seizures and vomiting. The vomitus contained a purple coloured cereal grain. The signs and grain colour were suggestive for a rodenticide with convulsive effects The diagnosis of crimidine poisoning was made by thin layer chromatography and was later confirmed by finding the source of the poison. Except for the administration of Vit B6, the specific antidote for crimidine, general treatment principles for poisoning were followed. The treatment of crimidine poisoning is time consuming and requires intensive care facilities.  相似文献

Background

E‐point‐to‐septal‐separation (EPSS) and the sphericity index (SI) are echocardiographic parameters that are recommended in the ESVCDCM guidelines. However, SI cutoff values to diagnose dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) have never been evaluated.

Objectives

To establish reference ranges, calculate cutoff values, and assess the clinical value of SI and EPSS to diagnose DCM in Doberman Pinschers.

Animals

One hundred seventy‐nine client‐owned Doberman Pinschers.

Methods

Three groups were formed in this prospective longitudinal study according to established Holter and echocardiographic criteria using the Simpson method of disk (SMOD): control group (97 dogs), DCM with echocardiographic changes (75 dogs) and “last normal” group (n = 7), which included dogs that developed DCM within 1.5 years, but were still normal at this time point. In a substudy, dogs with early DCM based upon SMOD values above the reference range but still normal M‐Mode measurements were selected, to evaluate if EPSS or SI were abnormal using the established cutoff values.

Results

ROC‐curve analysis determined <1.65 for the SI (sensitivity 86.8%; specificity 87.6%) and >6.5 mm for EPSS (sensitivity 100%; specificity 99.0%) as optimal cutoff values to diagnose DCM. Both parameters were significantly different between the control group and the DCM group (P < 0.001), but were not abnormal in the “last normal” group. In the substudy, EPSS was abnormal in 13/13 dogs and SI in 2/13 dogs.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

E‐point‐to‐septal‐separation is a valuable additional parameter for the diagnosis of DCM, which can enhance diagnostic capabilities of M‐Mode and which performs similar as well as SMOD.  相似文献

1. In each of four experiments 140 or 160 1‐d‐old broiler chicks were fed for 14 d on diets based on crystalline amino acids and other purified ingredients. The basal diet was a purified diet found suitable for 7‐d‐old chicks.

2. Growth was poorer with the basal diet than with a practical diet and it was not improved by an increase in the concentration of vitamins or supplementation with isolated soy protein, water or liver.

3. An increase in the amount of mineral mixture or of magnesium alone gave a significant improvement in growth, so that it approximated that obtained with the practical diet. Food conversion efficiency was significantly better with the mineral‐supplemented than with the practical diet.

4. The basal purified diet supplemented with magnesium to provide 684 mg Mg per kilogram was satisfactory for the early growth; chicks fed on this diet did not respond to sources of “unidentified factors” such as fresh or freeze‐dried liver and soy‐protein.  相似文献

Background

Long‐term microscopic agglutination test (MAT) results after vaccination with 4‐serovar Leptospira vaccines are not available for all vaccines used in client‐owned dogs.

Hypothesis/Objectives

To determine antibody responses of client‐owned dogs given 1 of 4 commercially available Leptospira vaccines.

Animals

Healthy client‐owned dogs (n = 32) with no history of Leptospira vaccination for at least the previous year.

Methods

Dogs were given 1 of 4 Leptospira vaccines on week 0 and then approximately on week 3 and week 52. Sera were collected before vaccine administration on week 0 and then within 3 days of week 3, within 2 days of week 4, and approximately on weeks 7, 15, 29, 52, and 56. Antibody titers against Leptospira serovars bratislava, canicola, grippotyphosa, hardjo, icterohemorrhagiae, and pomona and were determined by MAT.

Results

When compared among vaccines, MAT results varied in maximal titers, the serovars inducing maximal titers, and the time required to reach maximal titers. Each vaccine induced at least some MAT titers ≥1 : 800. Most dogs were negative for antibodies against all serovars 1 year after vaccination, and anamnestic responses were variable.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

Dogs vaccinated with Leptospira vaccines have variable MAT titers over time, and antibodies should not be used to predict resistance to Leptospira infection. MAT titers ≥1 : 800 can develop after Leptospira spp. vaccination, which can complicate the clinical diagnosis of leptospirosis.  相似文献

Background

Serum N‐terminal pro‐C‐natriuretic peptide (NT‐proCNP) concentration at hospital admission has sufficient sensitivity and specificity to differentiate naturally occurring sepsis from nonseptic systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). However, little is known about serum NT‐proCNP concentrations in dogs during the course of sepsis.

Objective

To determine serum NT‐proCNP and cytokine kinetics in dogs with endotoxemia, a model of canine sepsis.

Samples

Eighty canine serum samples.

Methods

Eight healthy adult Beagles were randomized to receive Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 5 μg/kg) or placebo (0.9% NaCl) as a single IV dose in a randomized crossover study. Serum collected at 0, 1, 2, 4, and 24 hours was stored at −80°C for batch analysis. Serum NT‐proCNP was measured by ELISA and 13 cytokines and chemokines by multiplex magnetic bead‐based assay.

Results

Serum NT‐proCNP concentrations did not differ significantly between LPS‐ and placebo‐treated dogs at any time. When comparing serum cytokine concentrations, LPS‐treated dogs had higher interleukin‐6 (IL‐6), IL‐10, TNF‐α and KC‐like at 1, 2, and 4 hours; higher CCL2 at 1, 2, 4, and 24 hours; and higher IL‐8 and CXCL10 at 4 hours compared to placebo‐treated dogs. There were no differences in serum GMCSF, IFN‐γ, IL‐2, IL‐7, IL‐15 or IL‐18 between LPS‐ and placebo‐treated dogs.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

Serum NT‐proCNP concentration does not change significantly in response to LPS administration in healthy dogs. Certain serum cytokine and chemokine concentrations are significantly increased within 1–4 hours after LPS administration and warrant further investigation as tools for the detection and management of sepsis in dogs.  相似文献

Summary

A retrospective study was carried out of 224 horses operated for strangulating small intestine obstructions. Fifty‐four horses were euthanized and 5 horses died during surgery which means that 165 (73%) were allowed to recover. Of these, 53 horses were euthanized or died in the clinic and 112 (50%) were discharged from the hospital. Of 90 horses available for follow‐up 1 year postoperatively, 76 (84%) were still alive. The most important causes of death or reasons for euthanasia in the direct post‐operative period were post‐operative paralytic ileus, (adhesive) peritonitis and intra‐abdominal haemorrhage. After discharge from the hospital the reasons were (adhesive) peritonitis and (recurrent) colic. Of the horses which survived for at least 1 year, 16% sometimes suffered from colic, 12% experienced problems with incisional woundhealing and 4% suffered from jugular vein thrombosis. All were in good or reasonable condition and 88% performed at (approximately) the same level as before the operation.

The type of surgical intervention (i.e. enterotomy, enterectomy) did not significantly influence the outcome of surgery, whereas the type of anastomosis did. End‐to‐end jejunojejunostomy had a better prognosis than side‐to‐side jejunocaecostomy.

It was concluded that strangulating obstructions of the small intestine still carry a poor to guarded prognosis. Mortality was highest in the direct peri‐operative period. Once discharged from hospital, prognosis can be considered to be fair to good. Attempts to improve outcome should be directed at a better handling of the ileal stump during surgery and at the prevention of post‐operative ileus and the formation of adhesions.  相似文献

1. U‐14C‐lysine was administered by tube into the crop to turkey poults fed on assay diets (maize + sesame + maize gluten meal) containing varying concentrations oflysine, and partition of the label into body components, carbon dioxide, and excreta was measured.

2. Deposition of 14C label into breast and heart muscles responded positively to dietary lysine concentration. There was no apparent relationship between dietary lysine intake and deposition of label into carbon dioxide or excreta.

3. Efficiency of lysine retention, above maintenance, was estimated to be 0.523 ± 0.034.

4. Turkeys exhibited variable metabolic efficiency in the use of lysine as indicated by loss of U‐14C‐lysine label to expired carbon dioxide and to excreta by individual turkeys.  相似文献

Background

Cyclooxygenase‐2 (COX‐2) is a key enzyme in the synthesis of pro‐inflammatory prostaglandins and 5‐lipoxygenase (5‐LO) is the major source of leukotrienes. Their role in IBD has been demonstrated in humans and animal models, but not in dogs with chronic enteropathies (CCE).

Hypothesis

COX‐2 and 5‐LO are upregulated in dogs with CCE.

Animals

Fifteen healthy control dogs (HCD), 10 dogs with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and 15 dogs with food‐responsive diarrhea (FRD).

Methods

Prospective study. mRNA expression of COX‐2, 5‐LO, IL‐1b, IL‐4, IL‐6, TNF, IL‐10 and TFG‐β was evaluated by quantitative real‐time RT‐PCR in duodenal and colonic biopsies before and after treatment.

Results

COX‐2 expression in the colon was significantly higher in IBD and FRD before and after treatment (all P < .01). IL‐1b was higher in FRD in the duodenum after treatment (P = .021). TGF‐β expression was significantly higher in the duodenum of HCD compared to FRD/IBD before treatment (both P < .001) and IBD after treatment (P = .012). There were no significant differences among groups and within groups before and after treatment for IL‐4, IL‐6, TNF, and IL‐10. There was a significant correlation between COX‐2 and IL‐1b in duodenum and colon before treatment in FRD and IBD, whereas 5‐LO correlated better with IL‐6 and TNF. IL‐10 and TGF‐β usually were correlated.

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

COX‐2 is upregulated in IBD and FRD, whereas IL‐1b and TGF‐β seem to be important pro‐ and anti‐inflammatory cytokines, respectively. The use of dual COX/5‐LO inhibitors could be an interesting alternative in the treatment of CCE.  相似文献

Background

Spec cPL is the most sensitive and specific test for diagnosing pancreatitis in dogs. Its results have not been compared to those of the 1,2‐o‐dilauryl‐rac‐glycero‐3‐glutaric acid‐(6′‐methylresorufin) ester (DGGR) lipase assay or those of abdominal ultrasonography.

Objectives

To investigate agreement of Spec cPL with DGGR lipase activity and pancreatic ultrasonography in dogs with suspected pancreatitis.

Animals

One hundred and forty‐two dogs.

Methods

DGGR lipase activity (reference range, 24–108 U/L) and Spec cPL were measured using the same sample. The time interval between ultrasonography and lipase determinations was <24 hours. The agreement of the 2 lipase assays at different cutoffs and the agreement between pancreatic ultrasonography and the 2 tests were assessed using Cohen''s kappa coefficient (κ).

Results

DGGR lipase (>108, >216 U/L) and Spec cPL (>200 μg/L) had κ values of 0.79 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.69–0.9) and 0.70 (CI, 0.58–0.82). DGGR lipase (>108, >216 U/L) and Spec cPL (>400 μg/L) had κ values of 0.55 (CI, 0.43–0.67) and κ of 0.80 (CI, 0.71–0.9). An ultrasonographic diagnosis of pancreatitis and DGGR lipase (>108, >216 U/L) had κ values of 0.29 (CI, 0.14–0.44) and 0.35 (CI, 0.18–0.52). Ultrasonographically diagnosed pancreatitis and Spec cPL (>200, >400 μg/L) had κ values of 0.25 (CI, 0.08–0.41) and 0.27 (CI, 0.09–0.45).

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

Although both lipase assays showed high agreement, agreement between ultrasonography and lipase assays results was only fair. Because lipase results are deemed more accurate, ultrasonography results should be interpreted carefully.  相似文献

1. Volatiles isolated from irradiated raw chicken were analysed by gas chromatography (GC) in conjunction with olfactory assessment of the effluent carrier gas to locate compounds with strong smells.

2. Sixteen odours of differing intensities were registered, some, but not others, coinciding with recognisable GC peaks. Identifications were made on the basis of retention data, mass spectrometric information and odour quality agreement.

3. Dimethyltrisulphide was found to be the most potent and obnoxious compound (foul gas, sulphurous), followed by cis‐3‐ and trans‐6‐nonenals (soapy), oct‐1‐en‐3‐one (mushroom) and bis(methylthio‐)methane (foul). With the exception of oct‐1‐en‐3‐one, none of these compounds has been reported before in irradiated raw chicken.

4. α‐Tocopherol and ascorbic acid induce stability in tissues in vivo and post mortem. Chickens were reared on diets supplemented with high concentrations (800 mg/kg food) of each of these vitamins. Yields of irradiation volatiles from the tissues of these birds were very much reduced, compared to yields from similar tissues from birds fed unsupplemented diets.

5. Concomitantly with the reduced yield of volatiles, less odour was associated with the samples when analysed by GC‐olfactory analysis.

6. The use of enhanced concentrations of the two vitamins in combination in the diet of poultry may provide a means of controlling development of off‐odour in irradiated raw chicken, thus improving acceptability to the consumer.  相似文献

1. Studies were undertaken to determine a safe inclusion rate for crambe (Crambe abyssinica) meal in broiler chick diets, and to determine the mechanism for adverse effects by investigating its constituents; l‐cyano‐2‐hydroxy‐3‐butene (CHB) and 3‐butenyl glucosinolate (epi‐progoitrin, E‐PG).

2. Crambe meals were prepared to differ in E‐PG (19, 36 and 40 g/kg) and CHB contents (0.1, 0.7 and 1.9 g/kg), and with either active or inactive thioglucosidase.

3. Meals were fed to 7‐d‐old broiler chicks at 50 or 100 g/kg of the diet for 12 or 13 d. In separate studies, isolated E‐PG or CHB were mixed into the diet or administered by gavage to 7‐d‐old broiler chicks in amounts equivalent to 50 or 100 g/kg crambe meal diets for 10 and 12 d, respectively.

4. Weight gain decreased (P<0.05) in chicks fed on the high glucosinolate crambe diets or isolated E‐PG. Food consumption decreased (P<0.05) in chicks fed on the diet containing the high E‐PG meal with active enzyme.

5. Mild liver lesions and increased serum aspartate aminotransferase were found in chicks fed on the diet containing the high glucosinolate meal with active enzyme. Other organs, including thyroids, were normal.

6. Commercially‐processed crambe meal appeared safe at an inclusion rate of 50 or 100 g/kg diet, but could not be recommended at this point for long term feeding.  相似文献
