During the last 24 years, the number of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., migrating up the River Frome has varied between < 1000 and > 4000 fish per annum. Most parr become smolts at age 1+ and there are three main sea ages of salmon returning to the river. Each sea age shows a bimodal pattern of migration in the river. Primary migration times for 3-sea-winter (3SW) fish are spring and autumn, with 2SW fish and grilse (1SW) peaking in summer and autumn. Some 28.4% of 3SW and 6.9% of 2SW fish are previous spawners. Multi-sea-winter fish historically passed over the counter in all months of the year, but recently, their numbers have declined, as have total numbers of fish of all ages. There has been a fundamental change in the age structure of the population, with grilse increasing in proportion over the study period. Photographs of fish, taken for validation of the counter, showed a significant decrease in mean length of grilse, but an increase in mean length for 2SW and 3SW fish. Rod catch data support these findings.  相似文献

Abstract  Upstream migrating Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., were trapped annually between 1990 and 2003 at the mouth of the River Simojoki in the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia, the Baltic Sea, to collect hatchery brood fish. They were also collected between 1996 and 1998 in the river to estimate the number of ascending salmon. These data on spawners were used to study the effect of changing fishing regulations in the Finnish coastal fishery in the mid-1990s on the structure of the spawning stock. In total, 1.9% of 2290 multi-sea-winter adults had previously spawned. The average annual proportion of repeat spawners was 0.5% between 1990 and 1996, but significantly higher (2.8%) between 1997 and 2003. The age distribution also changed significantly, as 4SW and 5SW salmon appeared in the population in the latter years. These changes were most probably due to the application of stricter fishing regulations. The potential of salmon to spawn repeatedly was thus preserved, despite a severe decline in natural production in the 1980s and early 1990s.  相似文献

Abstract. Rod catches at four sites on the River Spey were analysed over the period 1970–1991. The year-by-year trends and seasonal patterns of rod catches varied according to site location. During the 1970s and 1980s the spring salmon catch from the Spey as a whole declined, mirroring a decline in catch at the lower sites in the river early in the year. Catches at the study sites did not always follow trends in the fishery as a whole, however, illustrating that the catch at any given site is not a simple function of the total number of available fish in the river. In the first 2 years of the 1990s the decline in early season catches continued, accompanied by a more general drop in catches throughout the angling season at three out of four sites.  相似文献

Abstract  Isomeric ratios of astaxanthin in eggs and alevins of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., have proven useful in identifying female spawners of farmed origin, but the method underestimates the proportion of fish of farmed origin. The rate of underestimation was studied by analysing astaxanthin content in tissue of 55 farmed Atlantic salmon ascending two Norwegian rivers in the autumn of 1991. The astaxanthin content fell into two distinct classes. Fifty-one per cent of the adult escaped salmon had isomeric ratios similar to salmon fed synthetic astaxanthin, whereas all the remaining fish had ratios similar to wild fish. Discriminant analysis classified 96.4% of the fish with known astaxanthin content into the correct astaxanthin class on basis of tail-fin erosion, length, weight and gill-cover damage. This discriminant function was used to estimate the astaxanthin classification of 1017 farmed salmon caught in nine rivers during 1989–1991. The classification success varied among years from 52 to 64%. Corresponding numbers for females and males were 45–48% and 54–70%, respectively. Thus, estimates of spawning rates of farmed female salmon via astaxanthin content in eggs or alevins from redds should be adjusted accordingly. The observed isomeric ratios of astaxanthin in the escaped farmed salmon and the relationship with morphology indicates that a significant proportion of the escapees ascending rivers have spent more than 1 year in the wild after escape.  相似文献

The River Dalälven Baltic salmon, Salmo salar L., population has been maintained by stocking reared fish since the early 1920s. Initially, all rearing was carried out at one hatchery, but since the late 1980s two have been used. Both hatcheries are situated 9–10 km from the river mouth but some 600 m apart. All broodfish were caught in a single fish trap situated some 700 m upstream of the upper hatchery. The salmon smolts were released just below the water outlets of each hatchery, respectively. About 2% of the released smolts from each hatchery were tagged annually with Carlin tags. Total recapture rates were higher for smolts from the lower hatchery. A higher proportion of recaptured fish was reported from the home river for salmon from the upper hatchery. The migration within the river to the fish trap was more precise for fish from the upper station. Strays were very late in the season and of a higher number from the lower hatchery. Observations of jumping salmon by the outlet from the lower station indicated that salmon returned to that point. The lower recaptures in the trap were considered a result of a shorter river migration of salmon from the lower hatchery.  相似文献

Abstract Catch returns are often analysed as a means of inferring the status of salmon stocks. One aspect of such analyses is the problem of grilse error (the misreporting of one-sea-winter salmon as multi-sea-winter salmon), which may have important consequences for the management of salmon stocks. Reported catches from two estates on the River Spey between 1982 and 1992 were compared with the sea ages of the fish determined from scale reading. Weight was an important factor in determining the reported sea age of salmon in catch returns; the relationship between weight and sea age in the reported catch remained relatively constant throughout the angling season. Analysis of the scale sample data, however, indicated that the relationship between weight and actual sea age changed through the angling season, grilse accounting for increasing proportions of all weight classes up to 10 lbs (4.5 kg) as the season progressed. Grilse error was an identifiable problem at both estates, resulting in grilse catches being underreported by over 20%.  相似文献

Abstract  The prevalence of escaped farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in the River Ewe, western Scotland, was assessed. After the establishment of smolt cages in the catchment and marine cages near the river mouth during 1986–1987, approximately 425 000 parr and smolts, and 122 000 growers have escaped. Between 1987 and 2001, farmed salmon occurred in the rod fishery in 13 of the 15 years, contributing at least 5.8% of the total catch, with a maximum annual frequency of 27.1%. It was estimated that <1% of fish escaping from the marine cages entered the river, but contributed at least 27% of potential anadromous spawners in 1997. Radiotagged, farmed fish in 2001 probably spawned in three subcatchments also used by tagged wild fish. Despite the likelihood of hybridisation there was no change in the median weight or marine age of wild fish, but smolt age decreased significantly ( P  < 0.02). The Ewe has a depleted wild salmon population (≤900 anadromous adults), and further genetic introgression by escapees should be prevented.  相似文献

Abstract. The characteristics of the commercial catches of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in the Adour-Gaves Basin at the end of the 19th and 20th centuries were compared with regard lo age structure and mean weight-at-age. A visual analysis of the monthly weight distributions determined an age structure for the 20th century data which was proved to be consistent with the one obtained by scale-reading, ft was therefore used to study the 19th century weight frequency data. Age structure comparison showed a decrease in mean sea age between the two periods (most catches with one sea winter in the 1985-1990 period, instead of two sea winters in the 1873-1898 period). In addition, a drastic decline of the three-sea-winter salmon stock and the almost total disappearance of the four-sea-winter fish was noted between the two periods. The mean weight of one-sea-winter salmon seemed not to have changed while those of multi-sea-winter fish showed a slight decrease between the two periods. The main causes of those changes could have been the reduction of spawning areas due to the building of impassable dams, the dramatic increase in industrial pollution in both upper and lower parts of the rivers, and the exploitation of multi-sea-winter fish in sea fisheries.  相似文献

The migratory behaviour of sea-ranched Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., was analysed by radio-telemetry in the River Gudenaa, Denmark. The main objectives were to: (1) estimate mortality of returning adults through the fjord; (2) observe rate of progression and migratory pattern in the fjord and river; and (3) record whether spawning occurs in the river. Forty-two returning salmon (19 males and 23 females of total body length from 60–97 cm) reared and released as smolts, were caught and equipped with external radio transmitters in the outer estuary of the River Gudenaa in 1994 and 1995. Of the tagged salmon, 18 (43%) were caught in the estuary, four (10%) were not recorded after release and 20 (47%) entered the river. The mean rate of progression through the fjord was 7.6 km d−1 (range 1.4–18.2) in 1994 and 5.4 km  d−1 (range 1.6–17.1) in 1995. Eleven salmon were alive at the onset of the spawning period. Eight were retrieved dead from the river during or after the spawning period; four with empty gonads assumed to be successful spawners, and four with intact gonads. In 1994, unsuccessful spawners (found dead with intact gonads) entered the river earlier and had a longer total migration distance in the river compared to successful spawners. This suggests that spawning success of sea-ranched salmon is associated with time of river entry and river migration length.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to collect information on angling procedures and the effects of hook and release on Atlantic salmon in the River Alta, northern Norway, covering both grilse and multi-sea-winter salmon in a non-artificial setting with real anglers. Information on the angling procedure, handling of the fish and the condition of the fish at release was collected for individual salmon in catch logs (n=543, mean body length 82 cm), whereas physiological stress was studied in a sub-sample (n=15, mean body length 77 cm). To study post-release behaviour, survival and recapture rates, salmon were tagged with radio transmitters (n=30, mean body length 83 cm) and anchor T-tags (n=353, mean body length 79 cm). To evaluate the effects of the hook and release programme on the salmon population, number of spawning redds were recorded from a helicopter in 6 years during 1989–2000.

The results showed that at water temperatures 10.0–14.5 °C, a high proportion of the radio tagged salmon (97%) survived hook and release and stayed in known spawning areas during the spawning period. However, the behaviour after release seemed to be affected by hook and release. Only a small proportion (4%) of the anchor T-tagged salmon was caught more than once within the same season. Increased playing time, increased number of runs during the angling event, hooking in the throat, bleeding at the hook wound, increased handling time, air exposure and water temperature were factors that affected hooked and released Atlantic salmon negatively, either indicated by a poor condition at release, increased stress levels or unnatural behaviour after release. Number of spawning redds were more than doubled after the introduction of compulsory release of all angled salmon in Sautso (the upper 16% of the watershed inhabited by salmon) in 1998, which indicates that hook and release can be an effective management tool to enhance declining Atlantic salmon populations.  相似文献

Between 1991 and 2000, angling associations on the tributaries of the River Hvítá leased net fishery rights in the Hvítá mainstem, with the aim of eliminating net fishery harvest and improving the rod catch. The rod catch and net catch in the Hvítá system were significantly correlated (r = 0.94; P < 0.001) over the 10‐year period prior to (1981–1990) closure of the net fishery. The rod fishery in the tributaries of the River Hvítá was also significantly correlated to the rod fishery in selected groups of rivers in west (r = 0.80; P < 0.01) and north (r = 0.73; P < 0.05) before the closure. Significant increases (P < 0.01) were observed in rod catches in the Hvítá tributaries between 1991 and 2000 after the closure, while rod catches in control regions decreased. Based on evaluation of rod catch trends before and after the closure, it was estimated that the net fishery lease increased rod catches in the tributaries between 1773 and 2175 fish (28–35%). The increase in rod catches also suggested that the rod fishery may be taking 39–52% of the estimated previous net catch. The high price paid annually for the net fishery lease just to eliminate net fishing (€135 000) reflects the high value of rod caught salmon compared with salmon caught by the net fishery.  相似文献

Salmon catch and effort data for 1977 from ten private fisheries on the River Wye are analysed and discussed. The 555 salmon caught represent 10.7% of the total Wye rod catch and the mean angling success rate of 0.045 ± 0.022 salmon per angler-hour, equivalent to about 22 h per salmon, compares favourably with that for other rivers in Britain and Canada. Over 75% of all salmon caught were 2 sea-winter fish, the age distribution of salmon caught in the sample being similar to those for the whole river. Angling success in the upper reaches during July and August may have been reduced by limited availability affected by water temperatures too high for migration, Flows most suitable for successful angling in each fishery are compared in relation to distance from the estuary and long-term average daily flows. Salmon appeared to be caught nearer the crest of a spate in the upper compared with the lower reaches of the river and this difference is discussed.  相似文献

The proportion of angled Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. being caught and released has increased. If individuals are repeatedly captured, this may have fish welfare consequences. Of 995 Atlantic salmon tagged during catch and release in eight Norwegian rivers, 10% were captured twice, while 3% were captured three times within the same fishing season. The probability that released salmon were captured again decreased with decreasing time left of the fishing season, decreased for larger‐sized fish and varied among rivers/years. Increased exploitation rates within the river, indicating an increased fishing pressure, strongly increased the probability that fish would be recaptured. However, the proportion of salmon caught a second time was much lower than the total exploitation rates in the same rivers (which was on average 46%). For fish tagged in the sea, the likelihood of being angled decreased with time since entering the river, which may explain why the recapture rates of caught and released fish were lower than the total exploitation rates.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: We carried out mail and access point surveys to estimate the catch numbers, angling effort of recreational angling and the population of sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka in Lake Toya in 1998 and 1999. The mail survey questions in questionnaires distributed to anglers with a recreational angling license included date of angling, caught fish species and size, and catch number. In the access point survey we also asked anglers if they had a license. We measured the fork length and weight of caught fish. The catch rate (catch number in a day by each angler) from both surveys showed no significant difference, suggesting no bias for the catch rate between surveys. The estimated total angling effort was 1760 people (1998), and 1516 people (1999). The estimated recreational catch was 28 889 (1998) and 5455 (1999), that is, two or three times larger than the commercial catch. The fish population was estimated by using the DeLury method as 60 262 (1998) and 10 806 (1999). The total exploitation rate was 62% (1998) and 78% (1999). The size of caught fish was much larger in 1999 than 1998 because of the difference in age composition.  相似文献

In an attempt to increase fish standing crop and improve angler-catch, stocking was undertaken in the middle reaches of the River Derwent in Derbyshire using four cyprinid species. Each fish was marked with a dyespot, and nearly 2000 fish were introduced before the 1980–81 fishing season began. Bankside observations and catch return sheets were used to collect information on the number of marked and unmarked fish taken by angling. The percentage of captured fish that were marked reached 50% during summer 1980, although this was lower during winter 1980–81. A relatively small proportion of the fish caught were taken in angling matches. Anglers reported that the fishing had improved from‘poor’to‘good', and catches by a single angler in one day exceeded 20 kg. It is thought that the success of the operation was due to the fact that the stock fish were obtained from local rivers, were of a large size (> 20 cm) and were introduced when the river was at normal level. The implications of the results on management options are considered, and it is suggested that the quality of sport demanded by anglers in rivers of this type may be most easily sustained by periodic stocking with suitable fish.  相似文献

The effects of catch and release angling on survival of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., at Conne River, Newfoundland, were investigated by retaining angled ( n =49; experimental group) and trap-caught ( n =20; control group) fish in holding cages for up to 40 days. Samples were obtained from 8 June to 4 July, 2000, and partitioned among four water temperature strata. Apart from not being angled, control fish were handled, tagged, and transferred to holding cages in a manner similar to angled salmon. Water temperatures and discharge were monitored throughout the duration of the study. Overall, 8.2% of salmon caught and released died, but 12% died among salmon angled in water temperatures ≥ 17.9 °C. No control fish died. There were no significant differences in time associated with angling, exposure to air, tagging, transfer to holding cages, nor total handling time between salmon that survived vs. those that died. Results of the study should encourage managers to continue to use catch and release as a viable tool in the management of Atlantic salmon stocks.  相似文献

Warming water temperatures, combined with increased mortality following catch and release, could have synergistic consequences if rivers remain open to catch and release at high water temperatures, and catchability of fish remains similar across water temperatures. Here archived data for Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., were used to (a) quantify the influence of water temperature on catchability and (b) refine estimates of absolute catch and release mortality to incorporate the relationship between temperature and catchability. A significant decline in the number of Atlantic salmon caught at warmer water temperatures was found after accounting for the effects of river water height, fishing effort, run duration and year-to-year differences in fish abundance. Overall, absolute catch and release mortalities were predicted to be infrequent at cool river temperatures. At river temperatures sometimes associated with fishing closures, mortality due to the catch and release ranged from 6% to 14%. Although post-release mortality increases with water temperature, it is somewhat compensated by the reduced catchability of Atlantic salmon. Thus, the catchability component of catch and release is an integral consideration when evaluating the effectiveness of river closure temperature thresholds when managing catch and release angling.  相似文献

Apart from some irregularities reflecting changes in permit costs (1975) and the effects of drought (1976), there were increases in angler-visits, catch per angler-visit and number of fish caught during the first 5 years of the fishery. Thereafter, there were about 1000–1500 angler-visits per season, a mean catch of 1.0–1.2 trout per angler-visit and an annual catch of 1200–1800 trout. Between 1971 and 1980 the mean weight of the fish caught fell from 472 to 349 g. During the period 1976–1980 the mean catch per angler-visit was 1.2 fish. This compares favourably with results from a selection of upland and lowland British reservoirs. The mean weight of individual trout caught was 362 kg and this value is typical of both stocked and unstocked upland reservoirs. The mean annual catch during 1976–1980 was about 2 kg ha?1. This is similar to the values observed in other unstocked upland reservoirs. The gross yield from such reservoirs can be increased by stocking but the limited data available suggest that at stocking rates above about 5 kg ha?1 the net yield (i.e. weight caught — weight stocked) becomes negative.  相似文献

The abundance and stomach contents of salmonids (Oncorhynchus spp.) and the biomass of prey organisms were examined in the central subarctic Pacific and Bering Sea in the summer of 1991 and 1992. Salmonids were caught by surface longline using the same level of fishing effort. Chum (O. keta) and pink (O. gorbuscha) salmon were the predominant species, representing 44% and 36% sof the total catch (n = 1275) in 1991. In 1992, chum salmon composed 85% of the total catch (n = 603), but the catch of pink salmon decreased to 1% of the total catch due to the odd/even year fluctuation of Asian pink salmon abundance in the study area. It was found that chum salmon changed their dominant diet from gelatinous zooplankton (pteropods, appendicular-ians, jellyfishes, chaetognaths, polychaetes and unidentified materials) in 1991, when pink salmon were abundant, to a diet of crustaceans (euphausiids, cope-pods, amphipods, ostracods, mysids and decapods) in 1992, when pink salmon were less abundant. Local crustacean biomass (wet weight; mg m-3) had significant negative correlation with the CPUE (catch number per 30 hachi) of pink salmon in 1991 (r = -0.586; P = 0.026) and that of chum salmon in 1992 (r =–0.616; P = 0.014). There may be a limitation in the available prey resource for production of salmonids.  相似文献

The sea trout population of the River North Esk was sampled by means of a stationary trap situated on Kinnaber Mill Lade which drains its water from the main river. Commencing in 1971 the number of trout taken in the trap was noted daily, and from 1976 all stages of trout caught in the trap were tagged. The peak of the sea trout smolt migration was usually in May or June, and over the period of study exhibited a tendency to occur later each season. Two-year-old smolts comprised the largest age class in the smolt samples with 3-year-old fish being the other substantial age class. Samples of smolts taken for sex determination were found to be predominantly female. In 1979 and 1980 the sea trout smolt production of the North Esk was estimated from a mark-recapture experiment to be 51,969 and 78,208 respectively. A proportion of finnock (post-smolts) returned to fresh water in the year of their smolt migration and were taken moving upstream into the trap from July onwards, with a peak of movement occurring in the autumn. The main run of adult sea trout into the trap was found to take place at any time between July and October. The adult sea trout sampled were predominantly maiden spawners of ages 2.1+ and 3.1+ years. Both finnock and adult sea trout samples exhibited a similar freshwater age composition to that of the smolts.  相似文献
