Abstract. Observations of spawning by uninjured and injured Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., indicated that uninjured fish usually spawned in the outlets, or inlets, to pools and on coarse bottom sediments, whereas injured females spawned in different places. Frequently, the spawning sites lay in very shallow water with a slow current and on a bed of sand or fine gravel. Subsequent excavation of the spawning redds revealed that about 28% of the eggs laid by uninjured females were recovered, compared with only about 8% of those laid by injured females. This difference was significant (P < 0·01).  相似文献

The use of brushwood bundles as fish spawning media   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Salford Quays is a redeveloped freshwater dockland, which initially constituted part of the grossly polluted Manchester Docks, Manchester, UK. Such water bodies are characterized by a lack of suitable spawning sites and littoral refuges, and this will act to reduce fish recruitment. To redress this, a variety of artificial spawning substrates were introduced to these waters. Spawning structures were made from bundles of different types of thin brushwood suspended from the dock walls. Roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), spawned on bundles of willow, Salix alba (L.), and spruce, Pilea abies (L.), branches, whilst perch, Perca fluviatilis L., spawned on bundles of willow, sycamore, Acer pseudoplatanus (L.), spruce and plastic netting. Unused bundles were made up of lime, Tilia platyphyloss (Scop.), pear willow, Pyrus salicitolia (Pall.), and laurel, Laurus nobilis (L.). Perch spawning began around 20 May and showed a preference for open structures (between one and three ribbons per bundle). Roach spawning began about 10 days after perch and showed a preference for dense bundles of spruce (geometric mean egg density 1.5 cm? 2 spruce). The use of such structures in fisheries management is discussed.  相似文献

The study assessed the effect of hybridization on reproductive performance of Oreochromis karongae, Oreochromis shiranus and Oreochromis mossambicus for a period of 120 days. Number of eggs per batch, number of females spawned, relative fecundity, egg size, hatching period, hatchability and hatchling survival were assessed. The results revealed higher number of eggs per batch and relative fecundity in the crosses where O. shiranus and O. mossambicus were females than female O. karongae. The results also revealed that egg size, hatching period, hatchability and hatchling survival were species specific. Significant differences were noted for number of eggs and larvae produced by the three species (p < .05). Interspecific and pure crosses for the same female species did not differ significantly for the number of eggs per batch, relative fecundity, egg size, hatching period, hatchability and hatchling survival. However, number of female spawned was found to be higher in the interspecific crosses of female O. karongae than in pure cross of O. karongae. Findings from this study suggest that hybridization can be used to improve reproductive performance of O. karongae as the females spawned increased, and it is a value addition in aquaculture management of indigenous species.  相似文献

  • 1. The conservation of small aquatic habitats is fundamental to preserving diversity in Mediterranean freshwater ecosystems. Amphibians are particularly endangered, as their chemical world, represented by both abiotic and biotic scent trails, is highly susceptible to environmental changes.
  • 2. Breeding site fidelity in the northern spectacled salamander, Salamandrina perspicillata, an Italian endemic vertebrate, was investigated with respect to the ability of this species to locate its own home water rather than that from other places. The choice of aquatic habitat for spawning was investigated in dark conditions by comparing different types of experimental water (home breeding water vs. breeding water of allopatric populations vs. mineral water vs. distilled water). Fifty‐eight reproductive females were collected at four breeding sites in the Lepini Mountains (Latium, central Italy). The number of eggs spawned by each specimen in the different types of experimental water was counted.
  • 3. The very large majority of the eggs were found in the home breeding water. When the eggs counted in the other types of water were compared, no differences were found.
  • 4. These findings revealed that in the northern spectacled salamander the choice of spawning site was affected by the scent trail of its own aquatic habitat. This new information has improved knowledge of the auto‐ecology of S. perspicillata, thus contributing to strategies for its conservation.

  • 1. Luronium natans is a rare macrophyte that seems to be disappearing from lakes and rivers throughout its distribution area. In Denmark L. natans is most often found in man‐made canals and ditches, and its presence seems to be favoured by regular physical disturbance. Hence, management by cutting presents a possible method of preserving the few remaining populations of L. natans in Denmark and throughout its distribution area.
  • 2. The objective of this study was to elucidate the effect of different weed cutting frequencies on L. natans in order to propose recommendations for management with weed cutting for future conservation of L. natans.
  • 3. Three reaches of a river with L. natans were subjected to the following weed cutting frequencies: no cutting, twice per year, and four times per year, and the cover of L. natans and of other plants was monitored from June 2003 to October 2004.
  • 4. L. natans developed highest cover when subjected to weed cutting four times per year, but the frequency of flowering was then very low, resulting in a reduction in sexual reproduction, which could lead to a lower genetic diversity and possibly fatal effects in the long term. At a cutting frequency of twice per year L. natans was able to maintain healthy and sexually reproducing populations.
  • 5. Future management in canals should consist of weed cutting once or twice per year to prevent a population from being outcompeted by other species and to secure production of flowers and seeds. Alternatively, high frequencies of weed cutting could be performed in order to suppress competitive species, but should then be accompanied by a weed cutting‐free zone where flowering can occur.

The numbers of eggs spawned, attached, and carried through to hatching were examined in three groups of captive lobsters (Homarus americanus). Wild born/lab spawned H. americanus, lab born/lab spawned H. americanus, and hybrids of H. americanus ♂ × H. gammarus ♀ spawned 8800–11500 eggs per female (weight range 336–945 g). Hybrid females attached 77% of all spawned eggs. Purebred females attached either most eggs of a spawn or fewer than 10%. In some instances where attachment was poor, females were known to be virgins or had been mated to a sterile hybrid male. Unfertilized eggs could attach, but the percentage which did was low. Some wild born/lab spawned H. americanus carried portions of their clutches through until hatching; however, many purebreds and all hybrids dropped their clutches before hatching. Possible factors which cause eggs to drop prematurely are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract – The size of 2-month old trout Salmo trutta parr differed between sites and between years along the River Esva catchment (Asturias, northwestern Spain). Such variation was in a direction opposite to the variation observed in parental size. Parr were smaller in sites where parents grew faster, whereas larger parr occurred in sites where parents grew less. Parr size of six cohorts (1990–1996, except 1995) at 14 sites along the River Esva was inversely related to the growth rate and length of parents and positively related to canopy, egg size, and water temperature. The latter acted similarly on all parr independently of egg size and the site where the egg originated. Covariation patterns among parr size, parental traits, and canopy suggest that a canopy-regulated, growth-determined trade-off between egg size and number, previously described for the Esva trout, also extends to alevin size. In forested, shaded sites, adult trout grew less and spawned fewer larger eggs that resulted in larger alevins, whereas in fully insolated, production-rich sites, trout grew faster and spawned higher numbers of smaller eggs that produced smaller parr. I hypothesize that the phenotypic plasticity illustrated by the environmentally induced trade-off between egg size and number further extended to alevin size may be evolutionarily advantageous because it relates the size of trout alevins to food availability, as predicted by the growth previously experienced by parents. Larval transport in the slope region off north‐eastern North America influences recruitment to juvenile habitats for a variety of fishes that inhabit the continental shelf. In this study, collections of larval fishes were made during springtime over the continental slope to provide insights into larval distributions and transport. Ichthyoplankton composition and distribution mirrored the physical complexity of the region. Three larval fish assemblages were defined, each with different water mass distributions. A Gulf Stream assemblage was found predominantly in the Gulf Stream and associated with filaments of discharged Gulf Stream water in the Slope Sea. Larvae of this assemblage originated from oceanic and shelf regions south of Cape Hatteras. Several members of this assemblage utilize habitats in the Middle Atlantic Bight (MAB) as juveniles (Pomatomus saltatrix, Peprilus triacanthus) and other members of the assemblage may share this life cycle (Mugil curema, Sphyraena borealis, Urophycis regia). A Slope Sea assemblage was found in all water masses, and was composed of epi‐ and mesopelagic fish larvae, as well as larvae of benthic shelf/slope residents. Larvae of one member of this assemblage (U. tenuis) are spawned in the Slope Sea but cross the shelf‐slope front and use nearshore habitats for juvenile nurseries. A MAB shelf assemblage was found in MAB shelf water and was composed of larvae that were spawned on the shelf. Some of these species may cross into the Slope Sea before returning to MAB shelf habitats (e.g. Enchelyopus cimbrius, Glyptocephalus cynoglossus). Previous studies have examined the effect of warm‐core rings on larval distributions, but this study identifies the importance of smaller‐scale features of the MAB shelf/slope front and of filaments associated with Gulf Stream meanders. In combination with these advective processes, the dynamic nature of larval distributions in the Slope Sea appears to be influenced, to varying degrees, by both vertical and horizontal behaviour of larvae and pelagic juveniles themselves.  相似文献

Growth, intensity of Perkinsus marinus (Levine) infection, and survival of synchronously spawned North Carolina (NC) and Chesapeake Bay‐heritage (CB) oysters, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin) were evaluated under standard tray culture conditions at several sites in both regions (Wye River, Maryland; Mobjack Bay, Virginia; Pamlico River, NC and Bogue Banks, NC). Infection prevalence reached 100% in oysters held at all high‐ and moderate‐salinity sites, at which time the CB strain ceased to grow. Shortly after growth ceased, CB oysters exhibited mortality that rapidly progressed to 100%. Unlike the CB strain, growth continued in the NC strain despite high P. marinus prevalence. When mortality did occur in the NC strain, at a reduced rate of 37–40%, it was associated with higher intensity of P. marinus than the infection intensity correlated with death of CB oysters. At the low‐salinity site in NC, P. marinus infection persisted at low weighted prevalence throughout the latter portion of the culture period but was not associated with mortality of either strain. These trends in growth and disease resistance for the two strains demonstrate that aquaculture performance is related to the level of disease resistance in oyster strains, salinity of water in growing areas and virulence of P. marinus.  相似文献

Amphiprion akallopisos kept under aquarium conditions in South Africa spawned on average 2.2±0.8 (standard deviation) times per month throughout the year. There was no significant correlation between percentage of A. akallopisos pairs spawning and phase of the moon or tidal patterns. The increase in the number of spawnings during some spring and summer months appeared to correlate with changing photoperiod rather than changing water temperature. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The South African chokka squid, Loligo reynaudi, spawns both inshore (≤70 m) and on the mid‐shelf (71–130 m) of the Eastern Agulhas Bank. The fate of these deep‐spawned hatchlings and their potential contribution to recruitment is as yet unknown. Lagrangian ROMS‐IBM (Regional Ocean Modelling System‐Individual‐Based Model) simulations confirm westward transport of inshore and deep‐spawned hatchlings, but also indicate that the potential exists for paralarvae hatched on the Eastern Agulhas Bank deep spawning grounds to be removed from the shelf ecosystem. Using a ROMS‐IBM, this study determined the transport and recruitment success of deep‐spawned hatchlings relative to inshore‐hatched paralarvae. A total of 12 release sites were incorporated into the model, six inshore and six deep‐spawning sites. Paralarval survival was estimated based on timely transport to nursery grounds, adequate retention within the nursery grounds and retention on the Agulhas Bank shelf (<200 m). Paralarval transport and survival were dependent on both spawning location and time of hatching. Results suggest the importance of the south coast as a nursery area for inshore‐hatched paralarvae, and similarly the cold ridge nursery grounds for deep‐hatched paralarvae. Possible relationships between periods of highest recruitment success and spawning peaks were identified for both spawning habitats. Based on the likely autumn increase in deep spawning off the Tsitsikamma coast, and the beneficial currents during this period (as indicated by the model results) it can be concluded that deep spawning may at times contribute significantly to recruitment.  相似文献

Litopenaeus vannamei is cultured in earthen ponds at southern US inland sites when water temperatures permit shrimp survival and growth. The probability of a minimum air temperature ≤14 C for one, three, or five consecutive days at one coastal and eight inland sites where L. vannamei is or could be grown in ponds is high (50%) from late March through late April at all sites except Arcadia, Florida, and Harlingen, Texas. Probabilities are 10% by early May to early June. In the autumn, the 10 and 50% probability levels are reached in early‐ to mid‐September and by late September to mid‐October, respectively. Arcadia, Florida, and Harlingen, Texas, have the longest periods with low probabilities and Pecos, Texas, has the shortest periods. The maximum pond water temperature from the previous afternoon and the minimum air temperature from that night predicted the minimum pond water temperature the following morning for Pine Bluff, Arkansas: (R2 = 0.886): Tmin = 1.464 + 0.169Amin + 0.727Tmax, where Tmin = minimum daily pond water temperature (C), Amin = minimum air temperature (C) for the same day, and Tmax = maximum pond water temperature (C) from the previous day. Pond stock out and harvest decisions can be guided by minimum air temperature probabilities and predicted water temperature.  相似文献

Abstract— Channel catfish Icralurus punctatus are commonly spawned for research purposes by pairing of a hormonally treated female with a male in flow-through aquaria. A technique that allows hormonal induction of ovulation in females without pairing would accelerate genetic improvement and production of hybrid catfish. Over a 3-yr period (1994, 1995, and 1996) we conducted a series of trials to demonstrate the potential for artificial spawning in recirculating systems, and in 1996 we included trials with grouped females in addition to male-female pairs. Females were induced to spawn with injection of synthetic leuteinizing hormone-releasing hormone, and those that ovulated were stripped and the eggs were artificially fertilized. During 1994 and 1995, all fish were spawned by pairing, and in 1996, half of the females were spawned by pairing and half were grouped in tanks without males. Spawning success (percent of females that produced eggs), latency (time between injection and ovulation), and percent fertilization were observed for the paired and grouped trials. Spawning success was 36% in 1994 (N= 36). 22% in 1995 (N= 54). 41% in 1996 (N= 27). and 58% for grouped females (N= 26). The latency period was 113 ± 69 h in 1994, 109 ± 57 h in 1995, 44 ± 8 h in 1996, and 50 ± 9 h for grouped females. Percent fertilization was 16 ± 26% for eggs stripped in 1994, 72 ± 25% in 1995, 43 ± 20% in 1996, and 16 ± 37% for grouped females. In 1995, water quality problems were associated with high mortality of females (24 of 44 females; 4 of 44 males). The metabolic demands of final oocyte maturation in combination with methemoglobinemia caused by high nitrite levels could account for the increased vulnerability of females. These trials indicate that with adequate biofiltration, artificial spawning is possible in recirculating systems and with females grouped rather than paired. Further research on hormone dosage and timing of egg stripping will increase the utility of grouped spawning of channel catfish.  相似文献

The present study compares the relative costs of stocking ponds with postlarvae from wild or domesticated Kuruma shrimp, Penaeus japonicus (Bate), broodstock. Wild broodstock were obtained from a commercial trawler. Domesticated broodstock were reared to harvest size (wet weight = 25 g) on a commercial farm and then transferred to controlled environment tanks where they were grown to a final wet weight of 50 g. The costs of stocking ponds with postlarvae were calculated from the observed reproductive output, the costs of purchasing wild broodstock and the costs of domesticated broodstock production in the controlled environment facility. Domesticated P. japonicus spawned comparable numbers of eggs to wild broodstock of similar size, but hatching success was significantly lower. A total of 12 domesticated P. japonicus broodstock would be needed to produce the postlarvae to stock a 1-ha pond, compared to only six wild broodstock. However, the much higher relative costs of wild broodstock means that the cost of using their postlarvae would be Aus$851 per pond compared to Aus$390 for domesticated broodstock. The present authors conclude that the use of domesticated P. japonicus broodstock could be a cost-effective alternative to wild broodstock in Australia and in other countries where P. japonicus is farmed.  相似文献

  1. During this study, the effects of epiphytic filamentous algae on the survival of demersal spawned fish eggs were investigated in one of the most important spawning grounds of herring in the western Baltic Sea, which is subject to intense and ongoing eutrophication.
  2. In coastal marine ecosystems all over the world, eutrophication is a primary water quality issue, often resulting in mass developments of bloom‐forming algae. Macro‐algal blooms have immense ecological effects, as they alter the structure and the function of an ecosystem. Numerous fish species are affected, as they depend on those coastal areas for spawning and as juvenile habitats.
  3. A comparison of the survival of herring eggs on two natural spawning beds re‐vealed an immense impact of a filamentous algal bloom. The mortality rate reached nearly 100% in the area with massive occurrence of filamentous brown algae.
  4. Hypothesizing that the presence of filamentous algae facilitates herring egg mortality, field and laboratory experiments were conducted and revealed particular effects of distinct algal species. The survival rate of artificially spawned eggs on algal substrates and control substrates was compared. Whereas filamentous forms of the green alga Ulva intestinalis induced no immediate effect, significantly higher egg mortality was documented in experiments with the filamentous brown alga Pylaiella littoralis.
  5. Considering the ecological and economical importance of herring and other coastal spawners on the one hand and the persisting and increasing effects of eutrophication and climate change on the other hand, the results of our study clearly underpin the necessity to increase global efforts to reduce nutrient loads in coastal waters.

Protein kinase A plays a central role in the regulation of sperm motility from echinoderms to mammals, but the information about its regulatory role in molluscs is very limited. In this study, a protein kinase A catalytic subunit (designated as HdPKA‐C) was identified from Pacific abalone Haliotis discus hannai. The open reading frame of HdPKA‐C was of 1,077 bp, encoding a peptide of 358 amino acids with a typical protein kinase domain. HdPKA‐C shared 82%–87% sequence similarities with other PKA‐Cs, and it was clustered first with gastropod PKA‐Cs in the phylogenetic tree. The mRNA of HdPKA‐C was constitutively expressed in examined tissues, with the highest level detected in hepatopancreas. The phosphorylated form of HdPKA‐C (p‐HdPKA‐C) was localized at the acrosome, connecting piece and flagellum of spermatozoa with variable intensity. Its phosphorylated substrates were also detected in these regions with much lower intensity at the connecting piece. The inhibition of HdPKA‐C activity with H‐89 led to a significant reduction in the percentage of motile sperm and sperm velocities. p‐HdPKA‐C was detected by Western blot in strip‐spawned sperm, naturally spawned sperm and H‐89‐treated sperm with almost the same intensity. The intensity of p‐HdPKA‐C substrates in naturally spawned sperm was higher than that in strip‐spawned sperm, and it was roughly the same as that in H‐89‐treated sperm except for two bands at 50 and 60 kDa. These results collectively indicated that HdPKA‐C played an important role in the regulation of abalone sperm motility by altering its substrates phosphorylation.  相似文献

Populations are retained at reduced levels by resource competition and environmental stochasticity. In the Norwegian River Imsa, the relationship between fecundity of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) spawners and number of smolts per unit river area was investigated for cohorts spawned from 1976 to 2011. Annual number of smolts produced per unit area was best described by a multiplicative model and increased with the fecundity of the females as proxy for number of eggs deposited and the minimum water flow in August towards the end of the first growth season. Mean monthly water temperature, or water flow in any other month during the first year, had no significant effect on number of smolts produced. At sea, there was an almost linear relationship between number of emigrating smolts and returning adults, possibly because population abundance of Atlantic salmon is low relative to the carrying capacity in the ocean. Thus, both number of eggs spawned and minimum water flow in late summer influenced population abundance in the present river.  相似文献

Abstract Levels of gonadal steroid hormones were quantified in an adult striped bass, Morone saxatilis (Walbaum), broodstock during their gametogenic cycle. Blood plasma concentrations of Estradiol (E2) and testosterone in females, or 11-ketotestosterone(11-KT) and testosterone (T) in males, were used as indicators of maturation. In both sexes, hormone levels were low in summer but increased significantly by late October to intermediate levels which were then maintained until late January. They then increased again rapidly to maximum pre-spawning values attained in late February or March, and subsequently decreased during the spawning period (April and May) with an increased incidence of spent fish with low hormone levels. The changes in blood hormone concentrations coincided with annual changes in photoperiod and water temperature that may be useful landmarks for maturation in captive broodstock. Mature females were implanted with pellets containing a dose of approximately 20 μg/kg body weight of [D-Ala6-Pro9-Net]-LHRH (GnRHa) in a matrix of cholesterol (CH) and cellulose. In April, they had not yet begun final oocyte maturation (FOM) and were too immature for conventional induction of spawning by injection with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). In early April, females given two 95% CH (slow hormone-release) GnRHa pellets (95/95) or females given one 80% CH (fast hormone-release) GnRHa pellet and one 95% CH GnRHa pellet (80/95) spawned within 13 days treatment (n= 4) with good egg fertility (76 ± 7% of total) and hatch rates (62 ± 15% of fertile). Females given dual fast-release GnRHa pellets (80/80) or control (Sham) pellets did not spawn or show evidence of increased oocyte diameter or development. In late April, four of six females given the 80/95 GnRHa pellet combination spawned within 9 days. Three fish produced fertile eggs (54 ± 18%). one spawned overripe eggs, and the remaining two increased oocyte diameter and maturation. Three corresponding controls did not spawn, and two of these showed clear signs of atresia within 11 days. In early May, some females were undergoing early FOM and were mature enough to be spawned by hCG injection. Three were given a single 80% CH GnRHa pellet and spawned within 6 days of treatment to produce fertile eggs (44 ± 6%). Of two other females given dual 80% CH GnRHa pellets, one spawned infertile eggs and the other failed to spawn within 9 days. GnRHa implants show promise as a technique for inducing spawning of captive striped bass broodstock although the optimum hormone delivery systems, dosages and release rates should be verified for fish at specific maturational stages.  相似文献

Presumed hybrids between Haliotis rufescens and H. fulgens abalones, produced in a commercial abalone laboratory, were evaluated for progeny viability, gonad characteristics and for their ‘true’ status as hybrids by means of allozyme and microsatellite analyses. Four out of 10 evaluated allozyme loci proved to be useful for the genetic certification of hybrids, Gpi, Mdh‐1, Mdh‐2 and Sod, as they had exclusive alleles for each of the abalone reference species from which the presumed hybrids were produced. Three microsatellite loci were also evaluated for their usefulness in abalone hybrid certification. Two were not useful for hybrid certification as the reference abalone species shared some of the same alleles. The third loci (Hka 56) also had shared alleles between the two species, but at very different frequencies. Therefore, this permitted a presumptive certification of hybrids, which, however, was not error‐proof as two allozyme certified hybrids were wrongly classified as H. rufescens rather than as hybrids. Progeny viability of the only female certified to be a hybrid was significantly lower compared with one viability of the other females spawned, which were certified as H. rufescens. However, the number of eggs spawned by the only certified hybrid female was as large as those spawned by females certified as H. rufescens. Gonads of abalones sampled for the macroscopic appearance of sterility indicated that in the absence of any gonad development, no distinctive difference allows for hybrid identification, as there were undifferentiated individuals that were both hybrid and non‐hybrid. On the other hand, two certified hybrid males were characterized by spermatocytes being the most abundant gamete type, although one had some spermatozoa present, indicating only partial sterility. Among the two female hybrids found, vitellogenesis was observed to proceed up to vitellogenic oocytes.  相似文献
