With additional organic carbon, fish waste can be used as a substrate to produce bioflocs, a protein source for aquaculture animals. In choosing a carbon source, one should consider convenience, cost and biodegradability. This study investigates the efficiency of poly-β-hydroxybutyric acid (PHB), a biologically degradable polymer, as a carbon source to produce bioflocs in suspended growth bioreactors (SGRs), PHB-SGRs, compared with glucose (GLU-SGRs). The C:N ratio in PHB-SGRs could be maintained around 15:1. The volatile suspended solids (VSS) yield was 2.94 ± 0.72 gVSS/g fish waste for PHB-SGRS and 4.90 ± 0.23 gVSS/g fish waste for GLU-SGRs. The recycling rate of nitrogen in aquaculture solid waste was 56 ± 2% and 87 ± 7% for the PHB-SGRs and Glu-SGRs. No significant differences were found in the bioflocs produced and in the crude protein content of the produced bioflocs between PHB-SGRs and GLU-SGRs. PHB-SGRs and GLU-SGRs could remove dissolved inorganic nitrogen from aquaculture wastewater, with average values of 11.82 ± 8.95 and 16.27 ± 3.95 mg/g TSS/d. Because the calculation of the added amount of carbon and the multiple additions of carbon was avoided, PHB is considered to be a good choice as an organic carbon source for this process, even though not all parameters used for assessment were better than those of GLU-SGRs.  相似文献

In aquaculture, automation of fish processing by computer vision could reduce operating costs, improving product quality and profit. Currently fish are mechanically sorted by size, but market constraints require that externally malformed fish be removed as well. Additionally fish farmers screen for sex, in order to exploit the higher growth potential of females. The aim of this study was the development of methodological tools applicable to the on-line sorting of farmed seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L.) for size, sex and presence of abnormalities. These tools are based on image analysis and utilizing outline morphometry (Elliptic Fourier analysis) combined with multivariate techniques (based on partial least squares modelling). Moreover, the integration of these techniques produce size estimation (in weight) with a better regression efficiency (r = 0.9772) than the commonly used log of the measured body length (r = 0.9443). The two partial least squares discriminant analysis models used to select sex and malformed fish also returned high discrimination efficiencies (82.05% and 88.21%, respectively). The implementation of a similar approach within an on-line sorting machine would allow for real-time live fish processing.  相似文献

Basic data describing the physical characteristics of fish fecal waste are important in the design of effective solid waste management in aquaculture, especially in land-based facilities such as recirculating aquacultural systems (RAS).This study describes the physical properties of feces from rainbow trout fed eight different commercially available and widely used diets in Germany. Additional data from an earlier but unpublished study pertaining to feces derived from two rather extreme all-vegetarian diets are also presented for consideration of the settling properties. The diets were tested on duplicate groups of 50 rainbow trout in a flow-through aquaculture system. The effects of the diets on the physical properties of fecal particles such as particle size distribution (PSD), modeled settling velocity and rheological character were examined and the effects of each diet on fish health, growth and feed utilization were determined. Specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) for the different diets ranged from 0.98% d−1 ± 0.012% d−1 to 1.39% d−1 ± 0.012% d−1 and 0.97 ± 0.017 to 1.61 ± 0.017 (mean ± S.E.), respectively. The density of presoaked feces was significantly lower than that of intestinal feces and ranged from 1.01013 ± 0.00692 g cm−3 to 1.04547 ± 0.00692 g cm−3 (mean ± S.E.). Stability data were in the range from 390.12 ± 29.4 Pa to 1214.79 ± 29.0 Pa for elastic modulus and from 62.12 ± 6.1 Pa s to 232.68 ± 6.0 Pa s for dynamic viscosity. Based on the stability and PSD data theoretical efficiencies for removal of fecal waste using a drum filter showed remarkable variation, ranging from 82.5 to 95.9% (60 μm gauze). Based on the same data, theoretical removal by a sedimentation basin with routinely using overflow rates of 0.057 cm s−1 to 0.394 cm s−1 ranged from 62.8 to 93.8%. Both fecal density and PSD have an exponential impact on settling performance. Increasing fecal density improves the removal efficiency of a sedimentation basin by about 20%, however sedimentation was seen to be a less robust and efficient removal technique than drum filtration. Sedimentation systems also experience additional problems with respect to leaching. Turbulence that was mimicked in this study reflects to an optimal fish farm, which means disintegrating effects are mainly caused by fish motion. If disintegrating units e.g. pumps are used, which are known to promote further particle breakdown the effects would be amplified. The results demonstrate the central importance of density of suspended solids in defining removal efficiencies and suggest that manipulation of fecal density might offer a new and effective means of managing and optimizing waste output from aquaculture operations. This study describes the basic properties of fecal wastes generated by commercial diets and can be used as a basis for further research.  相似文献

Irrigated rice fields have enormous potential for expanding the aquaculture production in rice producing countries. Two field experiments were carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, to optimize the productivity of integrated rice–fish systems using Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), and common carp, Cyprinus carpio L. Both experiments were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replicates per treatment and regular rice monoculture as control. In the first trial, carp and tilapia were tested in single culture and in mixed culture with supplementary feeding at 2× maintenance level. The highest fish yield was obtained in the carp/tilapia mixed culture (586 ± 125 kg ha 1), followed by tilapia alone (540 ± 65 kg ha 1), and carp alone (257 ± 95 kg ha 1). Carp had significantly lower yield than the other two fish groups (p < 0.05) due to high mortality and inefficient feed utilization. As the carp/tilapia combination performed the best in the first experiment, it was tested with different inputs in the second trial, i.e. regular urea fertilization and two different feeding levels. The feeding levels were: continuous feeding at 2× maintenance level (feed level I) and a declining feeding schedule from 4× to 2× maintenance level (feed level II). The highest fish yield was obtained in feed level II (935 ± 29 kg ha 1), followed by feed level I (776 ± 22 kg ha 1), and the non-fed group (515 ± 85 kg ha 1). Yield differences between the treatments were significant at p < 0.05. Rice yields showed controversial effects between the rice–fish treatments and were dependent on the inputs provided. The highest rice production (4.2 t ha 1) was obtained from rice–fish plots with regular urea fertilization. Various significant effects of fish on water quality parameters were observed. Fish decreased the dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH value compared to rice only, especially when supplementary feed was provided. Moreover, fish stimulated the growth of phytoplankton and increased chlorophyll-a concentration. In conclusion, carp/tilapia mixed culture with supplementary feeding was found to be optimal for maximizing the output from rice–fish culture.  相似文献

Many fish rearing infrastructures are already equipped with human-operated camera systems for fish behavior monitoring, e.g. for stopping the feeding system when the fish is satiated or for monitoring of fish behavior abnormalities caused by poor water quality or diseases. The novel infrared reflection (IREF) system for indoor 3D tracking of fish demonstrated in the current study allows for automation of fish behavior monitoring, reducing the system running costs by eliminating the need for continuous human monitoring and increasing the behavioral analysis accuracy by excluding the human subjectivity factor. The operating principle of this system is based on the effect of strong absorption of near infrared (NIR) range light by water, thus allowing estimation of fish distance based on the corresponding fish object brightness on the camera image. The use of NIR illuminator as a part of the IREF system allows fish behavior monitoring in the dark so as not to affect fish circadian rhythm. A system evaluation under aquaculture facility conditions with Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) using flow-through water in tanks, showed the mean depth estimation error was equal to 5.3 ± 4.0 (SD) cm. The physiological variations among conspecific individual fish introduced the mean depth estimation error of 1.6 ± 1.3 (SD) cm. The advantages of the IREF system over well-known stereo vision systems are lower hardware cost and less computationally intensive 3D coordinates estimation algorithm, while the disadvantage is lower accuracy that is nevertheless acceptable for most applications of aquaculture fish monitoring.  相似文献

Commercial production of Atlantic salmon smolts, post-smolts, and market-size fish using land-based recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS) is expanding. RAS generally provide a nutrient-rich environment in which nitrate accumulates as an end-product of nitrification. An 8-month study was conducted to compare the long-term effects of “high” (99 ± 1 mg/L NO3-N) versus “low” nitrate-nitrogen (10.0 ± 0.3 mg/L NO3-N) on the health and performance of post-smolt Atlantic salmon cultured in replicate freshwater RAS. Equal numbers of salmon with an initial mean weight of 102 ± 1 g were stocked into six 9.5 m3 RAS. Three RAS were maintained with high NO3-N via continuous dosing of sodium nitrate and three RAS were maintained with low NO3-N resulting solely from nitrification. An average daily water exchange rate equivalent to 60% of the system volume limited the accumulation of water quality parameters other than nitrate. Atlantic salmon performance metrics (e.g. weight, length, condition factor, thermal growth coefficient, and feed conversion ratio) were not affected by 100 mg/L NO3-N and cumulative survival was >99% for both treatments. No important differences were noted between treatments for whole blood gas, plasma chemistry, tissue histopathology, or fin quality parameters suggesting that fish health was unaffected by nitrate concentration. Abnormal swimming behaviors indicative of stress or reduced welfare were not observed. This research suggests that nitrate-nitrogen concentrations  100 mg/L do not affect post-smolt Atlantic salmon health or performance under the described conditions.  相似文献

Direct and continuous measurement of dissolved CO2 (dCO2) is crucial for intensive aquaculture, especially in shallow raceway systems (SRS). In this work the performance of a portable dissolved CO2 probe analyzer was tested for the effects of different aqueous solutions, pure oxygen injection and agitation. Laboratory results showed significant (p < 0.05) solution effects on probe performance for low (10–20 mg L−1) and high (30–50 mg L−1) dCO2 concentrations. Globally performance was better in deionized water, followed by marine fish farm water and artificial seawater. Accuracy and response time were the parameters most affected by the type of solution tested. Linearity was always observed (R2 = 0.995–0.999). The probe was sensitive to 1 mg L−1 dCO2 increments for concentrations <6 mg L−1 in artificial seawater. Pure oxygen injection did not affect probe readouts, and agitation was needed for better accuracy and response time. In real marine SRS with tanks in series dCO2 dynamics was revealed using the probe coupled to a developed flow cell. A prototype SRS was built and used to study dCO2 dynamics without endangering cultivated fish. Generally, results obtained indicate that the probe tested although precise, is better suited for discrete, single-point dCO2 monitoring, being a limited resource for the special needs of shallow raceway systems. As SRS represent a paradigm change in aquaculture, new water quality monitoring strategies and instrumentation are needed, especially for dCO2. Fiber optic sensors can be a solution for continuous, multipoint monitoring, thus contributing to the understanding of water quality dynamics in hyperintensive aquaculture systems.  相似文献

Peracetic acid (PAA) products are being introduced to aquaculture as sustainable disinfectants. Two strategies are used to apply PAA: high dose pulse applications, or low dose continuous application. In the present study, their impacts on fish health and water quality were investigated in triplicate flow-through tanks stocked with rainbow trout. The gentler and shorter water cortisol increase measured along twice-per-week pulse applications of 1 mg L−1 PAA indicated a progressive adaptation of fish. In contrast, the continuous application of 0.2 mg L−1 PAA caused no stress to fish. Meanwhile, no mortality and no impact on growth or innate cellular immunity were observed. The pulse applications restricted biofilm formation, and partially inhibited nitrification. Additionally, the highest oxygen concentration and stable pH were observed. In contrast, the continuous application promoted biofilm formation, and caused a pH increase and intermediate oxygen concentration. The contrast was probably due to different susceptibility of microbes to PAA-induced oxidative stress. To summarize, pulse PAA applications cause minor stress in fish, but have advantages over continuous application by ensuring better water quality.  相似文献

Fish oxygen requirement is a fundamental variable of aquaculture system design and management, as it is the basis for determining water flow rates for sustaining stock. A study on oxygen consumption of California halibut (Paralichthys californicus) between 3.2 and 165.6 g was conducted in small raceways (2.41 m long, 0.28 m wide, and 0.22 m high; operational water depth between 0.05 and 0.10 m with a quiescent zone 19 cm long in the effluent section) working as open respirometers in a recirculating system under farm-like conditions. The fish were fed commercial dry pelleted feeds at a ratio of ∼0.70–3.00% of body weight (BW) and stocked at densities between 94% and 316% percent coverage area (PCA). Oxygen consumption rates were determined by mass balance calculations. The mean and maximum oxygen consumption rates (g O2/kg fish/day) for juvenile California halibut under the conditions tested can be expressed by Mday = 15.077W−0.2452 and Mday = 17.266W−0.2033, respectively, where W is fish weight in grams. The determination of oxygen consumption by California halibut in farm-like conditions provides valuable information on the oxygen requirement of these fish in an aquacultural setting. This information can be used for designing and sizing a rearing facility for the intensive culture of California halibut.  相似文献

The effects of sub-lethal CO2(aq) concentrations were tested for the first time on gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) juveniles (4–25 g; 64 growth days) and adult (∼300–400 g; 71 d) fish, both in fully controlled pilot tests and the latter also as part of full-scale RAS (recirculating aquaculture system) operation. In the pilot experiments (concentration range 5.2–56.3 mg CO2/L) the specific growth rate, mortality rate, and physical fish disorders were monitored. In the full scale experiment, two groups of fish, originally from the same batch, were exposed for 197 d to controlled (by NaOH dosage) and uncontrolled pH conditions, resulting in exposure of the fish to significantly different CO2(aq) concentrations. The pilot results showed, as expected, that the seabream fish grew faster at the lower CO2 concentrations and that the growth rate of both juveniles and adult fish was only minimally inhibited up to roughly 20 mg CO2/L (compared to a previously published curve). Mortality rate was considerable only at the highest CO2 concentration (∼56 mg CO2/L). Physical irregularities were not observed, apart from abnormally high absence of swim bladder at the highest CO2(aq) treatment. The (statistically significant) results from the full-scale RAS operation showed that growing gilthead seabream for 197 d at roughly constant and relatively low (∼16 mg/L) CO2(aq) concentration resulted in fish with ∼10% larger mean weight relative to the fish grown in ponds in which CO2(aq) was not controlled and its concentration fluctuated daily between 19 and 37 mg/L.  相似文献

Potassium permanganate is a chemical compound widely used in aquaculture for the control and removal of parasites, and in the prevention of diseases caused by bacteria and fungi. However, this compound can be toxic to fish, being a strong oxidant. Moreover, there is no consistent information in the literature about its toxicity to non-target organisms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acute toxicity (LC50;96h) of potassium permanganate for tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, and to determine its toxic effects on non-target organisms using ecotoxicological assays performed with the microcrustacean Ceriodaphnia dubia and with the green microalgae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The results showed that the concentration of 1.81 mg L? 1 of potassium permanganate caused acute toxic effect in tilapia fingerlings. The ecotoxicological assays demonstrated that concentrations above 0.12 mg L? 1 can cause chronic toxic effects on non-target organisms, indicating possible deleterious effects on the food chain of the aquatic ecosystem that may receive the discharge of effluents released by fish cultures treated with this chemotherapy. All toxic concentrations determined in this study were below those recommended in the literature for the use of this chemotherapy in fish cultures, demonstrating that this type of therapy should be more carefully considered in order to avoid damage to the treated fish and to the environment.  相似文献

Steroid hormones have been shown to accumulate in recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) water over time; however, their influence on the reproductive physiology of fish within RAS remains unknown. Whether ozonation impacts waterborne hormone levels in RAS has likewise not been fully evaluated. To this end, a controlled 3-month study was conducted in 6 replicated RAS containing a mixture of sexually mature and immature Atlantic salmon Salmo salar to determine whether ozone, as typically applied in RAS to improve water quality, is associated with a reduction in waterborne hormones. Post-smolt Atlantic salmon (1253 ± 15 g) were stocked into each RAS; 109 of 264 fish placed in each system were sexually mature males, and 5 were mature females. Water ozonation, controlled using an ORP set-point of 290–300 mV, was applied with the pure oxygen feed gas within the low-head oxygenators of 3 randomly selected RAS, while the remaining 3 RAS did not receive ozone. The RAS hydraulic retention time was 6.9 ± 0.3 days. Study fish were raised under these conditions for 12 weeks; during weeks 10 and 12, triplicate water samples were collected from the following locations in each RAS: i) culture tank, ii) makeup water, iii) pre-biofilter, iv) post-biofilter, and v) post-gas conditioning. Concentrations of 3 waterborne hormones – testosterone, 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT), and estradiol (17β-estradiol) – were quantified using enzyme immunoassays (EIA). Estradiol was significantly reduced by ozonation; testosterone and 11-KT were also reduced by ozonation, although these reductions were not observed across all sampling locations and events. Testosterone and 11-KT concentrations, however, were significantly reduced following water passage through the biofilters of both ozonated and non-ozonated RAS. The results of this study demonstrate the potential for ozone to be used in RAS as a means of preventing the accumulation of steroid hormones. Further research is required to assess whether reducing hormones in this manner impacts precocious sexual maturation in RAS-produced Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

A new physico-chemical process for ammonia removal from fresh-water recirculated aquaculture systems (RASs) is introduced. The method is based on separating NH4+ from RAS water through an ion-exchange resin, which is subsequently regenerated by simultaneous chemical desorption and indirect electrochemical ammonia oxidation. Approach advantages include (1) only slight temperature dependence and no dependence on bacterial predators and chemical toxins; (2) no startup period is required and the system can be switched on and off at will; and (3) the fish are grown in much lower bacterial concentration, making the potential for both disease and off-flavor, lower. A small pilot scale RAS was operated for 51 d for proving the concept. The system was stocked by 105 tilapia fish (initial weight 35.8 g). The fish, which were maintained at high TAN (total ammonia nitrogen) concentrations (10–23 mgN L−1) and fish density of up to 20 kg m−3, grew at a rate identical to their established growth potential. NH3(aq) concentrations in the fish tank were maintained lower than the assumed toxicity threshold (0.1 mgN L−1) by operating the pond water at low pH (6.5–6.7). The low pH resulted in efficient CO2 air stripping, and low resultant CO2(aq) concentrations (<7 mg L−1). Due to efficient solids removal, no nitrification was observed in the fish tank and measured nitrite and nitrate concentrations were very low. The system was operated successfully, first at 10% and then at 5% daily makeup water exchange rate. The normalized operational costs, calculated based on data derived from the pilot operation, amounted to 28.7 $ cent per kg fish feed. The volume of the proposed process was calculated to be ∼13 times smaller than that of a typical RAS biofilter. The results show the process to be highly feasible from both the operational and economical standpoints.  相似文献

A laboratory study was conducted to assess the effect of PIT tagging on survival and growth of young-of-the-year brown trout (Salmo trutta) and evaluate PIT tag loss as a function of body size at tagging. Transponders (11.5 mm long and 2.1 mm in diameter) were injected into the peritoneal cavity of fish ranging from 41 to 70 mm fork length (FL) using hypodermic needles. A total of 145 tagged fish and 136 control fish of similar size were reared over 4 weeks. Logistic regressions show that survival rate reached 95% for fish ≥52 mm FL at tagging (with a tag retention rate >70%), and 99% for fish ≥57 mm FL (tag retention rate >80%). No significant effect of tagging on growth (fork length and weight) was detected at the end of the experiment. The specific growth rate varied markedly among PIT-tagged fish regardless of fork length, weight or tag-to-body-weight ratio at tagging. Results suggest that juvenile brown trout larger than 57 mm FL (tag-to-body weight ratio in water <3.4%) can be marked by injection of 11.5 mm PIT into the peritoneal cavity with negligible effects on survival and growth, but this leads to a relatively high tag rejection rate (up to 20%).  相似文献

Recirculating aquaculture systems have a unique anthropogenic-based soundscape which is characterized by the type of equipment utilized, the structural configuration of walls, tanks, equipment, the substrate the tanks are situated on and even the activities of the personnel operating the facility. The soundscape of recirculation facilities is inadequately understood and remains poorly characterized, although it is generally accepted that the dominant sounds found in such facilities are within the hearing range of fish. The objective of this study was to evaluate the soundscape in a recirculating aquaculture facility from an intra-tank perspective and determine how the soundscape is shaped by a range of characteristics within the facility. Sounds were recorded across an operating aquaculture facility including different tank designs. The sounds recorded fell within previously measured pressure level ranges for recirculating systems, with the highest maximum sound pressure level (SPL) recorded at 124 dB re 1 μPa2/Hz (with an FFT bin width of 46.9 Hz, centered at 187.5 Hz). The soundscape within the tanks was stratified and positively correlated with depth, the highest sound pressure occurring at the base of the tanks. Each recording of the soundscape was dominated by a frequency component of 187.5 Hz (corresponding centre of the 4th 46.9 Hz FFT analysis bin) that produced the highest observed SPL. Analysis of sound recordings revealed that this peak SPL was associated with the acoustic signature of the pump. The soundscape was also evaluated for impacts of tank hood position, time of day, transient sounds and airstone particle size types, all of which were found to appreciably influence sound levels and structure within the tank environment. This study further discusses the distinctiveness of the soundscape, how it is shaped by the various operating components and considers the aquaculture soundscape in relation to natural soundscapes found within aquatic tropical environments.  相似文献

The accumulation of particulate organic matter (POM) in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) has become an important issue with the intensification of finfish production. The objective of this study was to assess the foam fractionation efficiency of a vacuum airlift in different conditions (POM concentrations, airflow rates, bubble sizes, water renewal rates and feed addition). In sea water, the vacuum airlift allowed removing 20% of the initial POM concentration per hour (foam fractionation efficiency), corresponding to a 20.7-fold concentration factor between the tank and the foam. In rearing conditions, efficiency increased with decreasing water renewal rate or increasing POM concentration. An increase in airflow rate from 10 to 80 L min−1 in the vacuum airlift significantly decreased foam fractionation efficiency when feed was added to the water. The impact of feeding was only observed with high airflow rates where bubble coalescence occurred. Calculated POM production by fish ranged between 15.9 and 23.5 g h−1 and was equivalent to estimations based on feed conversion ratio (FCR). This indicated that all the POM produced was extracted by the vacuum airlift.  相似文献

Total suspended solids are a priority pollutant under the Clean Water Act and a point of concern for aquaculture facilities. The use of ubiquitous vegetated ditches on the aquaculture landscape may serve as an environmentally and economically sustainable practice for reducing suspended sediment contributions to downstream environments. This study assessed effects of consecutive low-grade weirs on suspended solids retention and settling rates of aquaculture pond effluent in a single drainage ditch. Two control and nine treatment discharges were conducted in September and October 2012 at the Mississippi State University South Farm Aquaculture Facility. All discharges decreased total and volatile suspended solid loads. Total suspended solids were decreased 72–94%, with a significant removal rate of 0.02 ± 0.01 mg L−1 min−1 in both control (F = 6.12, P < 0.001) and treatment discharges (F = 16.02, P < 0.001). Volatile suspended solids comprised 2–80% of total suspended solids and had a significant removal rate of 0.02 ± 0.001 mg L−1 min−1 in both control (F = 10.46, P < 0.001) and treatment discharges (F = 6.28, P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in overall settling rates between control and treatment discharges; however, prior to weir 1, both total and volatile suspended solid concentrations increased in control discharges. Treatment discharges decreased both total and volatile suspended solids significantly (P < 0.001) prior to weir 1. Further analysis revealed flow rate to be a significant (P < 0.001) variable in total suspended solid removal while initial concentrations affected reduction rates of volatile suspended solids significantly (P < 0.001). These results suggest that the use of low-grade weirs could be a viable best management practice that easily integrates within the aquaculture landscape and creates hydraulic conditions conducive to sediment retention.  相似文献

There is a need to develop practical methods to reduce nitrate–nitrogen loads from recirculating aquaculture systems to facilitate increased food protein production simultaneously with attainment of water quality goals. The most common wastewater denitrification treatment systems utilize methanol-fueled heterotrophs, but sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification may allow a shift away from potentially expensive carbon sources. The objective of this work was to assess the nitrate-reduction potential of fluidized sulfur-based biofilters for treatment of aquaculture wastewater. Three fluidized biofilters (height 3.9 m, diameter 0.31 m; operational volume 0.206 m3) were filled with sulfur particles (0.30 mm effective particle size; static bed depth approximately 0.9 m) and operated in triplicate mode (Phase I: 37–39% expansion; 3.2–3.3 min hydraulic retention time; 860–888 L/(m2 min) hydraulic loading rate) and independently to achieve a range of hydraulic retention times (Phase II: 42–13% expansion; 3.2–4.8 min hydraulic retention time). During Phase I, despite only removing 1.57 ± 0.15 and 1.82 ± 0.32 mg NO3–N/L each pass through the biofilter, removal rates were the highest reported for sulfur-based denitrification systems (0.71 ± 0.07 and 0.80 ± 0.15 g N removed/(L bioreactor-d)). Lower than expected sulfate production and alkalinity consumption indicated some of the nitrate removal was due to heterotrophic denitrification, and thus denitrification was mixotrophic. Microbial analysis indicated the presence of Thiobacillus denitrificans, a widely known autotrophic denitrifier, in addition to several heterotrophic denitrifiers. Phase II showed that longer retention times tended to result in more nitrate removal and sulfate production, but increasing the retention time through flow rate manipulation may create fluidization challenges for these sulfur particles.  相似文献

Micro-screen rotating drum filters are an alternative to sand filtration especially when excessive waste water is a concern. The filtering process of drum screen filters is very simple, yet very efficient and reliable due to their overall design and operation. Drum filters are designed with few moving parts to ensure a long life with low operating/maintenance costs.Micro-screening essentially captures particles on a screen fabric while letting the water pass. This paper describes a design of two an industrial-scale drum screen filters driven by undershot wheel and its performance installed in recirculating aquaculture system culturing tilapia at El-Nenaeia fish farm. These filters are consisted of a woven metal mesh of 100 μm. The design criteria for solids loading rate in the influent water is 10 kg m−2 min−1.The results indicate that the design parameters of the filter such as surface are and rotation speed were affected by the water flow rate, where the surface area and drum speed ranged from 1.58 to 27.87 m2, and 1.05 to 8.40, respectively. The results also indicated that the efficiency of filter decreased during the first two months compared to the last two months of fish growth period, with an average 34.22 ± 8.85% during the first 60 days and an average 52.41 ± 16.77% during the last period. Using water wheels for driving the screen filter is very important in saving energy, where the filter with such dimensions needs 1.0 hp for driving it, which represents 18.0 kW daily.  相似文献
