This paper profiles the reproductive biology of and investigates the resilience of Tasmanian striped trumpeter under different levels of fishing pressure and size at entry to the fishery using per-recruit analysis. The spawning season around Tasmania occurs in the austral spring, with peak spawning activity in September and October. Size at 50% maturity was estimated at 543 mm fork length (FL) for females (estimated age = 6.8 years) and 529 mm FL for males (estimated age = 6.2 years). Striped trumpeter is a multiple spawner with batch fecundity estimates ranging from 205,054 for a 2 kg fish (540 mm FL) to 2,351,029 for a 9.5 kg fish (800 mm FL). At the current minimum legal size limit of 450 mm total length (equivalent to approximately 425 mm FL), yield-per-recruit was estimated to be close to maximum, and spawning biomass-per-recruit (SPR) ranged from 35 to 52% of virgin stock, depending on the mortality estimates used. Although these SPR are at a level considered sustainable, this methodology does not incorporate temporal variability, specifically recruitment variability. Therefore, conservative management measures are recommended until a dynamic model is applied to the striped trumpeter population.  相似文献

Abstract –  To address the dearth of information on tagging effects and long-term survivorship of tagged fish in native and introduced species, laboratory and field investigations were undertaken on three non-native fish species (pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus ; topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva ; pikeperch Sander lucioperca ) tagged with coded-wire (CW), passive integrated transponder (PIT), radio (RT) telemetry and/or acoustic tags (AT), with survivorship of native brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) examined in the field. Laboratory results revealed high survivorship following tag attachment/insertion and resumption of feeding within 24–48 h of tagging (all mortalities could be attributed to an unrelated outbreak of fungal infection), with retention rates being high in both pumpkinseed and pikeperch but low in topmouth gudgeon (excluded from field studies). In the field, short-term post-operation survival was high in pikeperch, pumpkinseed and brown trout. In pumpkinseed and trout, 100% of RT fish survived a 24–30 day tracking study, with 60% and 80%, respectively, recaptured alive at least 3 months post-tagging. Of PIT tagged pumpkinseed, 44% were recaptured (after 6–18 months), with small-sized, CW-tagged fish (0.38 g weight) captured up to 1 year after tagging. In pikeperch, all AT fish except one (the smallest specimen) survived their full expected tracking period (i.e. tag life) – the single lost specimen survived at least half of its expected tracking period (i.e. 6 month battery life). Overall, the tagging methods used were highly effective in pumpkinseed and pikeperch, showing good retention and survival, but PIT tagging of topmouth gudgeon was plagued by low survivorship and tag rejection.  相似文献

Abstract –  This study examined potential adverse effects of surgically implanted passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags (12 × 2.1 mm) on bullhead ( Cottus gobio L.) of three different length-classes (I: 50–64 mm, II: 65–79 mm, III: 80–94 mm). During a 7-week laboratory experiment, the rate of PIT tag loss, incision closure time, survival, growth and swimming capacity were tested. The PIT tag weight to fish body weight ratio varied between 1.04% and 4.85%. The mean incision closure time differed significantly among length-classes and varied between 2.8 (I) and 4.3 (III) weeks. Nevertheless, PIT tag retention did not differ among length-classes and was ≥90%. The survival of untagged, sham-tagged and PIT-tagged bullheads was ≥90% and did not differ within or among length-classes. Finally, within each length-class, there was no difference in growth and swimming capacity among treatments. Hence, these results suggest the applicability of PIT tags for individually tagging bullheads ≥50 mm.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare fish performance and welfare at different stocking densities in a recirculating system (RS) and a flow through system (FTS) under field conditions. During the 77 days experiment, the fish survival rate was high (99.3%) and stocking density increased from 57 to 98–108 kg m?3. No significant differences in growth were observed between RS and FTS until day 56. Later, growth decreased in the FTS, while it remained similar to the farm reference at 50 kg m?3 in the RS. Final weight was 17% higher in RS than in FTS. The maximum carrying capacity of the RS was near 100 kg m?3, limited by NO2 increase up to safe level at the end of the experiment, the maximum carrying capacity of the FTS was near 85 kg m?3, probably limited by CO2 concentration (17.8 ± 5.7 mg l?1). In the RS, the relative length index of pectoral and dorsal fins was lower than in the FTS, which may be attributed to the tank hydrodynamics. In both systems, an improvement of the pectoral and dorsal profile was observed at the end of the experiment, attributed to a swimming activity reduction that may have decreased contact between individuals. In the RS, high caudal fin deterioration (50% versus 20% in FTS) was observed irrespective of stocking density, that could be linked to the highest water velocity modifying the fish swimming activity. The results confirm that when water quality is maintained in safe level ranges, high densities can be used in trout RS without fish performance and pectoral or dorsal fin deterioration, but with a major caudal impairment.  相似文献

The study examined the effect of PIT tagging and size on the growth, survival, food conversion, tag retention and wound healing in juvenile European whitefish. Three size classes of juvenile whitefish (class S—body weight (b.w.) approx. 4.0 g; class M—b.w. approx. 8.0 g; class L—b.w. approx. 13.6 g) were tagged with PIT implanted intraperitoneally (TROVAN®, United Kingdom). These groups formed S‐P, M‐P and L‐P respectively. Fish from the control groups (groups S‐C, M‐C and L‐C) were not tagged. Whitefish from the tagged and control groups were reared for 28 days in recirculating aquaculture systems. Only in the fish from the smallest group (group S‐P) was tagging confirmed to have a negative impact on growth rate and survival, which, after 28 days, was 70% in comparison with 94.4% in group S‐C. The rate of wound healing in all whitefish groups was similar. After 28 days following PIT implantation, all wounds were healed. Short‐term PIT retention (28 days) for all the groups was > 90%, and no differences were noted among groups. In summary, it is recommended that whitefish be PIT‐tagged using the intraperitoneal method after they have attained a body weight > 8 g. Tagging smaller specimens of this species leads to higher mortality.  相似文献

Individual dynamics within salmon sea cages are poorly understood. Large inter- and intra-individual variations in swimming depth and higher average body weight deeper in the cage have been observed. Sampling of fish for inspection purposes and estimates of body weight distributions based on automatic measures at a limited depth interval may thus be skewed. The present study investigates how 335 randomly PIT tagged Atlantic salmon of 3.4 ± 0.96 kg (bled weight, mean ± SD) swam near square PIT antennas (0.6 m) fixed at either 5 or 9 m depth within a 14 m deep cage holding a total of 3750 individuals. The individual variation in registration frequency was large, with 76 individuals never registered and 12 individuals registrered 30 times or more. Larger individuals were much overrepresented at 9 m depth, resulting in 8.5% overestimation of average weight at this depth when repeated registrations were not accounted for. No overrepresentation of any size class was found at 5 m depth. Half of the individuals registered at 9 m depth were also registered at 5 m depth, and 82% of the individuals registered at 5 m depth were also registered at 9 m depth. We interpret the result as fish of all sizes using a wide depth range, but larger individuals spending more time at deeper water than smaller individuals. Therefore, size estimates at a limited depth interval should be avoided.  相似文献

The effect of two physical tagging systems, Visible Implant Elastomer (VIE) and Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT), was evaluated in red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) fingerlings, at different sizes. For VIE tagging, the weight classes were <1 and 1?C5?g and no tag effect was detected on fish growth. There was a significant difference in mortality between tagged and untagged <1?g fish, but not for the 1?C5?g fish. The tag loss rate was null for all sizes, however, tags showed fragmentation. This partial tag loss was evaluated and quantified. Seven VIE colours were compared and arranged from best to worst visibility: green, red, pink, orange, yellow, white and blue. For PIT tagging, 2?C6?g, 5?C10?g and 10?C20?g weight classes were analysed. There was no significant tag effect on fish growth, for any size, nor on mortality from 10?g. Tag loss rate ranged from 2.9 to 5.9%. These results demonstrate that, in red porgy, VIE is a successful tagging system from 2?g onwards whereas PIT system is successful from 10?g onwards. The combination of both systems allows traceability of fish from a very small size on, which is necessary for the implementation of genetic breeding programmes.  相似文献

To determine the efficacy of passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags for marking rohu Labeo rohita (Ham.) in the selective breeding programme, a series of experiments has been carried out at the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) under the Indo–Norwegian project of ‘Selective breeding of rohu’. Six groups of rohu fingerlings with weight ranging from 2 g to 20 g were tagged with PIT tags to determine a suitable size range for tagging. Fingerlings weighing 8–15 g were found to be quite suitable for tagging with a PIT tag. Recovery of the PIT tag depends upon the survival of tagged fish under field conditions. Rejection of the PIT tag by rohu was observed to be only 0.05%. Through effective management practice, the survival of tagged fish increased up to 95%, and thus tag loss was minimized.  相似文献

Convenient, economical, and reduced labor fish harvest and transfer systems are required to realize operating cost savings that can be achieved with the use of much larger and deeper circular culture tanks. To achieve these goals, we developed a new technology for transferring fish based on their avoidance behavior to elevated concentrations of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2). We observed this behavioral response during controlled, replicated experiments that showed dissolved CO2 concentrations of 60–120 mg/L induced rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to swim out of their 11 m3 “growout” tank, through a transfer pipe carrying a flow with ≤23 mg/L dissolved CO2, into a second 11 m3 “harvest” tank. The research was conducted using separate groups of rainbow trout held at commercially relevant densities (40–60 kg/m3). The average weight of fish ranged from 0.15 to 1.3 kg during the various trials. In all trials that used a constant flow of low CO2 water (≤23 mg/L) entering the growout tank from the harvest tank, approximately 80–90% of the fish swam from the growout tank, through the transfer pipe, and into the harvest tank after the CO2 concentration in the growout tank had exceeded 60 mg/L. The fish that remained in the growout tank stayed within the area of relatively low CO2 water at the entrance of the transfer pipe. However, the rate of fish transfer from the growout tank to the harvest tank was more than doubled when the diameter of the transfer pipe was increased from 203 to 406 mm. To consistently achieve fish transfer efficiencies of 99%, water flow rate through the fish transfer pipe had to be reduced to 10–20% of the original flow just before the conclusion of each trial. Reducing the flow of relatively low CO2 water near the end of each fish transfer event, restricted the zone of relatively low CO2 water about the entrance of the fish transfer pipe, and provided the stimulus for all but a few remaining fish to swim out of the growout tank. Results indicate that the CO2 avoidance technique can provide a convenient, efficient, more economical, and reduced labor approach for fish transfer, especially in applications using large and well mixed circular culture tanks.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of the use of astaxanthin alternate feeding on rainbow trout pigmentation in term of astaxanthin serum concentration, muscle colour and astaxanthin muscle retention. Four hundred and fifty rainbow trout were fed the same basal diet supplemented with two different astaxanthin levels, 100, and 200 mg astaxanthin kg? 1 of diet, hereafter designated as AX100 and AX200, respectively. An additional astaxanthin-free (AX0) diet was used. The experimental treatments were as follows: (1) REF = AX100 diet at each meal each day, served as reference; (2) SD1 = AX100 diet at each meal the first day followed by AX0 diet at each meal every second day; (3) SD2 = AX100 diet and AX0 diet in alternate meals each day; (4) R2 = AX200 diet and AX0 diet in alternate meals each day; (5) R4 = AX200 diet at the first meal the first day followed by AX0 diet at the second meal the first day and at each meal every second day. Fish were fed the experimental feeding schedule for 42 days.At the end of the experiment there were no significant differences among fish fed the different feeding schedules in term of final mean weight, specific growth rate and feed efficiency ratio. SD2 fish group displayed the highest (P < 0.05) astaxanthin serum concentration and the R4 fish group the lowest one. REF and R2 fish groups showed similar astaxanthin serum concentrations. Muscle chroma showed the most pronounced effect. It increased significantly for all fish groups during the experiment. At the end of the experiment REF and R2 fish groups displayed higher values than SD1 and R4 fish groups. Muscle astaxanthin concentrations increased significantly during the experiment whatever the astaxanthin feeding schedule. At the end of the experiment, the highest muscle astaxanthin concentration was recorded for R2 fish group while the lowest was noted for R4 fish group. Except for SD1 and R4 fish groups, muscle astaxanthin retention decreased significantly during the experiment. At the end of the experiment, muscle astaxanthin retention coefficients for SD2 fish group were significantly higher than those for REF fish group. The results reported here provide further evidence of the potential applicability of alternate astaxanthin feeding on rainbow trout pigmentation. Extending the optimisation of the SD2 treatment will therefore be subject for future studies. Its application could result in cost saving in the fish farming industry.  相似文献

From 2003 through 2006, 18,180 big skate (Raja binoculata) were tagged in three regions in British Columbia, Canada: northern Hecate Strait, Queen Charlotte Sound and the west coast of Vancouver Island. To date, this is the largest tagging program conducted for skates or rays worldwide. As of December 31, 2008, 7% of the tagged fish (n = 1238) have been recaptured through the commercial fisheries. Generally, 75% of the recaptured fish were recaptured within 21 km of the tagging location. Long-range movements (up to 2340 km) were undertaken by a small percentage (1.5%) of the recaptured fish. Tagged big skate were recaptured in waters off of Oregon, Washington, throughout the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea. The majority of big skate recaptured outside of Canadian waters were female (83%, n = 15), of which 80% (n = 12) were likely immature at release. Three methods of estimating growth parameters were employed and produced varying results. The Gulland and Holt method was not able to produce growth parameter estimates. The GROTAG method for combined sexes produced von Bertalanffy growth curve parameters L (294.7 cm), K (0.05) and t0 (?1.44) that were similar to published estimates for British Columbia big skates. The von Bertalanffy growth curve parameters produced by Fabens method for combined sexes were L = 168.6 cm, K = 0.16 and t0 = ?0.81.  相似文献

Two musical stimuli transmissions (Mozart and Romanza) as compared with white noise treatment or control, both resulted in significantly higher growth performance in juvenile (6.7 ± 0.12 g) rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) reared for 14 weeks. Carcass chemical composition and fatty acid composition (% of total fatty acids and mg/g carcass wet weight) did not differ among experimental treatments. The same was observed with regard to liver composition. Brain serotonin (5-HT) and its metabolite (5-HIAA) levels were increased in Mozart fish groups compared to all other treatments. However, serotonergic activity (as defined by the 5-HIAA: 5-HT ratio) for the Mozart groups was similar to control groups and was increased in Romanza and white noise fish groups. Brain dopaminergic activity (as defined by the DOPAC: DA ratio, i.e. dopamine metabolite to dopamine levels) was lower in Mozart compared to control fish groups. Differences were also observed as regards total carbohydrase and protease activity in several parts of the digestive tract. In conclusion, the results of the present data indicate that the musical stimuli transmitted were beneficial for the growth performance of rainbow trout. The fact that white noise treatment presented no major differences from control fish groups suggests that this specific stimulus was neither beneficially nor negatively perceived by rainbow trout, while it further supports the hypothesis that it is the musical stimuli per se that make all the difference.  相似文献

The effects of four different tagging methods (PIT, anchor T‐tag, Carlin tag and dummy radio transmitter) on survival, behaviour and growth of Atlantic salmon smolts during their downstream migration were examined in semi‐natural circular channels during a natural migration period in spring. Survival of smolts was high and tagging wounds healed well in all tagging groups. Tag loss rates were generally low, being the highest (2.5%) in the dummy radio transmitter group. Total length and body mass of the tagged and untagged smolts did not differ at the end of the experiment. Migration activity of smolts generally showed similar patterns among the treatments. However, Carlin‐tagged smolts started their migration slightly later than the PIT‐tagged fish, and smolts tagged with Carlin tag or dummy radio transmitter showed less overall migration activity than fish with PIT tag.  相似文献

The bioavailability of lysine in blood meals from various origins was examined in rainbow trout. Bioavailability of lysine of the blood meals was assessed in comparison to that of l-lysine HCL using a slope ratio assay experimental design. A corn gluten meal-based diet, deficient in lysine (1.5% diet), was used as the basal diet. Two levels of spray-dried poultry blood meal (SDBM), flash-dried bovine blood meal (FDBM), disc-dried poultry blood meal (DDBM), and lysine-HCL substituted corn gluten meal in the basal diet to produce experimental diets containing 1.8 or 2.2% lysine. These diets were pair-fed to rainbow trout (initial body weight = 25 g/fish) reared at 15 °C for 12 weeks. Weight gain, feed efficiency ratio (FER, gain: feed), retained nitrogen (RN), and recovered energy (RE) increased significantly (P < 0.05) with increasing lysine levels. Diets containing SDBM and FDBM recorded significantly greater weight gain, FER, RN and RE compared to DDBM (P < 0.05). At the 1.8% lysine level, the diet containing FDBM recorded significantly greater weight gain, and RN than the diet supplemented with l-lysine HCl. The weight gain, FER and RN of the fish fed diets containing SDBM was not significantly different from that of the fish fed the diets with l-lysine HCl, at both lysine levels. At the 2.2% lysine level, feeding diets containing FDBM and DDBM resulted in significantly lower weight gain than diet supplemented with l-lysine HCl, suggesting that other nutrients may have become more limiting than lysine at high levels (20%) of blood meal. Results suggest that the bioavailability of lysine in SDBM or FDBM is slightly greater than that of l-lysine HCL. Bioavailability of lysine in the DDBM used in this study appeared to be significantly lower than that of spray-dried or flash-dried blood meals.  相似文献

A 20-week feeding trial was carried out to investigate the influence of three palm oil products as the principal dietary lipid source on the growth performance, proximate composition, tissue fatty acid composition and nutrient digestibility of red hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) fed these diets from stocking to marketable size. Four isonitrogenous (30% crude protein) and isoenergetic (16.5 kJ g 1) practical diets were formulated with 8% of added fish oil (FO), crude palm oil (CPO), palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) or refined, bleached and deodorized palm olein (RBDPO), respectively. Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of 30 fish of 31.24 ± 0.05 g mean initial body weight. The tilapia were raised at 29 ± 1 °C in 12 round 1000 L fiberglass tanks with a continuous water flow rate of about 1.8 L/min.Results showed that the source of added lipid did not significantly influence (P > 0.05) final body weight, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, survival, body indices, hematocrit and production yield of tilapia. There was no significant difference in the fillet proximate composition of fish fed the various diets, except that fish fed the PFAD diet showed lower lipid deposition. The deposition of fatty acids in fish tissues was generally influenced by the fatty acid profile of the diets. Fillet fatty acid profiles of tilapia fed palm oil-based diets had significantly higher concentrations of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, but lower levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) compared to the fish fed the FO diet. Fillet of fish fed the FO diet had significantly higher concentrations of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) compared with fish fed palm oil-based diets. Dietary lipid source did not significantly affect dry matter and protein digestibility (62.1–64.8% and 83.5–85.0%, respectively). The inclusion of dietary palm-origin oils significantly reduced the total lipid digestibility of the diets due mainly to the decreased digestibility of the saturated fatty acids. In all treatments, the apparent digestibilities of both n  3 and n  6 PUFA were the highest, followed by monoenes, while the lowest were the saturated fatty acids. Despite the high free fatty acid content of PFAD (92.2%) compared to CPO (4.8%) and RBDPO (0.1%), the different free fatty acid content did not significantly affect the nutrient digestibility of the palm oil-based diets. Results obtained confirmed the feasibility of feeding tilapia with palm oil-based diets with a 100% substitution of added dietary fish oil throughout the grow-out cycle until marketable size.  相似文献

Commercial production of Atlantic salmon smolts, post-smolts, and market-size fish using land-based recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS) is expanding. RAS generally provide a nutrient-rich environment in which nitrate accumulates as an end-product of nitrification. An 8-month study was conducted to compare the long-term effects of “high” (99 ± 1 mg/L NO3-N) versus “low” nitrate-nitrogen (10.0 ± 0.3 mg/L NO3-N) on the health and performance of post-smolt Atlantic salmon cultured in replicate freshwater RAS. Equal numbers of salmon with an initial mean weight of 102 ± 1 g were stocked into six 9.5 m3 RAS. Three RAS were maintained with high NO3-N via continuous dosing of sodium nitrate and three RAS were maintained with low NO3-N resulting solely from nitrification. An average daily water exchange rate equivalent to 60% of the system volume limited the accumulation of water quality parameters other than nitrate. Atlantic salmon performance metrics (e.g. weight, length, condition factor, thermal growth coefficient, and feed conversion ratio) were not affected by 100 mg/L NO3-N and cumulative survival was >99% for both treatments. No important differences were noted between treatments for whole blood gas, plasma chemistry, tissue histopathology, or fin quality parameters suggesting that fish health was unaffected by nitrate concentration. Abnormal swimming behaviors indicative of stress or reduced welfare were not observed. This research suggests that nitrate-nitrogen concentrations  100 mg/L do not affect post-smolt Atlantic salmon health or performance under the described conditions.  相似文献

Rainbow trout (100 g initial weight) were subjected to the combined effect of two culture densities (15 and 40 kg m−3, D15 and D40, respectively) and two dietary energy levels (22 and 27 MJ kg−1 E22 and E27, respectively) during a 75-days experimental period. At the end of the experiment, the growth rate as well as the metabolic and oxidative status of liver and muscle of fish were studied. The results showed that combination of culture density and dietaryenergy level negatively affected growth, cholesterol and LDL plasma levels and oxidative stress in muscle. Higher culture density negatively affected the values of total protein, triglycerides, and HDL in plasma, values of hepatic and muscular metabolic activities pyruvate kinase (PK), citrate synthase (CS), and hydroxiacil-CoA dehydrogenase (HOAD); glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) activities in plasma, liver, and muscle; glucose 6P dehydrogenase (G6PDH) activity in muscle; and oxidative stress in liver.High energy intake, adversely affected the hepatic activity of G6PDH, HOAD, GPT and oxidative stress in muscle.Consequently our results indicate that a combination of high culture density and a high level of dietary energy (27 MJ kg−1 in diet) exert a negative impact on the physiology and consequently on the welfare of the farmed fish.  相似文献

The effects of sub-lethal CO2(aq) concentrations were tested for the first time on gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) juveniles (4–25 g; 64 growth days) and adult (∼300–400 g; 71 d) fish, both in fully controlled pilot tests and the latter also as part of full-scale RAS (recirculating aquaculture system) operation. In the pilot experiments (concentration range 5.2–56.3 mg CO2/L) the specific growth rate, mortality rate, and physical fish disorders were monitored. In the full scale experiment, two groups of fish, originally from the same batch, were exposed for 197 d to controlled (by NaOH dosage) and uncontrolled pH conditions, resulting in exposure of the fish to significantly different CO2(aq) concentrations. The pilot results showed, as expected, that the seabream fish grew faster at the lower CO2 concentrations and that the growth rate of both juveniles and adult fish was only minimally inhibited up to roughly 20 mg CO2/L (compared to a previously published curve). Mortality rate was considerable only at the highest CO2 concentration (∼56 mg CO2/L). Physical irregularities were not observed, apart from abnormally high absence of swim bladder at the highest CO2(aq) treatment. The (statistically significant) results from the full-scale RAS operation showed that growing gilthead seabream for 197 d at roughly constant and relatively low (∼16 mg/L) CO2(aq) concentration resulted in fish with ∼10% larger mean weight relative to the fish grown in ponds in which CO2(aq) was not controlled and its concentration fluctuated daily between 19 and 37 mg/L.  相似文献

Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, more commonly known as ‘white spot’ is recognised as one of the most pathogenic diseases of wild and cultured freshwater fish. In trout hatchery systems infections can quickly establish and result in high mortality if left unregulated. Current control centres around the use of regular bath treatments with formalin, however, treatments are not always effective and are labour intensive. Environmentally safe, non-chemical alternatives are required. This paper describes the performance of a mechanical system developed to remove cysts from commercial trout raceways. The system consists of two parts: a specially designed suction head connected to a pump that is used to vacuum the bottom of hatchery raceways, and a low-adhesion polymer raceway lining. Following tests on a series of potential linings, the most efficacious product in preventing settlement of cysts was used to line three raceways in a commercial rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) hatchery. Over a period of three months, lined raceways were vacuumed on a daily basis. The three control raceways were maintained according to the farms normal husbandry procedures. Approximately thirty fish were sampled from each raceway at fortnightly intervals, and the abundance of the parasite in each raceway determined. The mechanical system led to a significant reduction in the abundance of the parasite in the test raceways, with a mean abundance of 361.88 ± 260.75 parasites per fish in control raceways compared with 1.64 ± 1.59 parasites per fish in the test raceways at the peak of the infection. Additionally fish survival was significantly higher in test raceways over control, with a mean of 84.5% of the stock surviving in the test raceways compared with only 70.6% in the controls by trial end.  相似文献
