Pasture legumes are important components of both mixed farming rotations and permanent pastures in temperate climates. Breeding of two widely sown pasture legumes, subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) and French serradella (Ornithopus sativus Brot.), is constrained by the long generation cycle, typically enabling only one generation per year. We hypothesized manipulation of culture medium and conditions would enable the development of a laboratory‐based protocol for in vitro reproduction in subterranean clover and French serradella. In vitro flowering and viable seed set was induced from both species. For subterranean clover, the most effective treatment was culturing on modified MS medium with 1 μm kinetin and 0·1 m sucrose under a 100 μmol m?2 s?1 light intensity and continuous photoperiod. For French serradella, culture on a hormone‐free B5 medium with 5 mm NH4Cl and 0·1 m sucrose under a 100 μmol m?2 s?1 light intensity and 20 h photoperiod was optimum. It is expected this technique will have application in accelerating generation turnover within breeding programs, for the study of factors influencing flowering in pasture legumes, and for the propagation of valuable yet enfeebled plants such as embryo‐rescued hybrids.  相似文献

Canola is widely grown in Australia to provide diversity within winter crop rotations. Its production is heavily reliant on triazine tolerant varieties but Clearfield® and conventional varieties are also significant components of the industry. Glyphosate tolerant varieties have been introduced, thereby providing an alternative technology to be incorporated into the farming systems. To evaluate the potential impact of the relative herbicide technologies, a comparison of herbicide tolerant canola weed management systems was undertaken at Wagga Wagga, Australia over a 5-year rotation. Near isogenic lines of conventional, glyphosate tolerant and triazine tolerant varieties were evaluated for their abilities to control annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum), the most challenging weed of temperate crops in Australia. Glyphosate tolerant and triazine tolerant canola achieved high levels of ryegrass control and attained higher yields than the conventional system. Glyphosate tolerant canola provided extra control of broadleaf weeds and also achieved better seed oil levels when compared with the other canola systems. There were positive flow-on weed management benefits for the remainder of the crop sequence from the weed control achieved in the initial crop, particularly following glyphosate tolerant canola. Subsequent control of volunteer canola in all treatments was readily achieved by using paraquat/diquat. The glyphosate tolerant weed management system was more profitable than the triazine tolerant system, although no allowance was made for technology costs as they were not known at the time of study. These outcomes demonstrate the potential value of herbicide tolerant canola to Australian farmers.  相似文献

Serradella (Ornithopus) species are high‐quality pasture legumes that originate from the Mediterranean basin and have been increasingly used in southern Australian temperate grazing systems. They are generally regarded as tolerant of soils with low pH and, by inference, elemental toxicities such as aluminium (Al). No studies have examined the effect of high Al concentrations on the growth of French serradella (Ornithopus sativus Brot.) or newly developed cultivars of yellow serradella (O. compressus L.). Several cultivars/accessions of each species were grown in low ionic‐strength nutrient solutions at pHCa 4.5 containing a range of Al concentrations. Their susceptibility to root growth inhibition by Al was benchmarked against reference species ranging from Al‐sensitive to Al‐tolerant. Most serradella cultivars had moderate‐to‐high Al tolerance in solution culture but one yellow and two French serradella cultivars ranked alongside the Al‐sensitive reference species. A subset of cultivars and reference species were then grown in an Al‐toxic soil to test the validity of the solution culture results; these cultivars spanned the apparent range in Al sensitivity/tolerance indicated by the solution culture experiment. Variation in the relative root length achieved in Al‐toxic solution culture explained ~59% of the variation in the relative root length achieved in the acidic Al‐toxic soil. This result supports the conclusion that Al tolerance varies among serradella and that some cultivars may not thrive in soils with pHCa < 4.5 and elevated extractable Al concentrations.  相似文献

The aim was to study the effects of white clover cultivar and combinations with perennial ryegrass cultivars on seedling establishment in autumn‐sown swards and on winter survival of seedlings. Large‐leaved white clover cv. Alice and small‐leaved white clover cv. Gwenda, and an erect and a prostrate perennial ryegrass cultivar were sown in autumn in pure stands and as four binary grass‐clover mixtures. Mixtures of white clover cv. Huia and Aberherald with perennial ryegrass were also sown. Companion grasses had no significant impact on the establishment of white clover. The number of seedlings of white clover cv. Alice in mixtures (335 m?2) was higher than cv. Gwenda (183 m?2) and pure swards had similar white clover population densities as mixed swards. White clover cv. Huia tended to have more seedlings than Aberherald (355 and 205 m?2 respectively). No stolons were produced prior to a severe winter, because of the late sowing date. Winter survival of clover seedlings was 0·56 in mixtures and 0·69 in pure stands, irrespective of white clover or companion grass cultivar. Stolon development of white clover in autumn is often considered essential for overwintering survival and spring growth. In this study, there was considerable survival of the non‐stoloniferous tap‐rooted seedlings of all four clover cultivars despite a severe winter.  相似文献

An experiment, A, involving dates and methods of application of 2,4-D (amine) as a preliminary treatment in the renovation of a poor downland permanent pasture, followed by surface cultivations and sowing of S.24 perennial ryegrass and S.100 white clover, was carried out at Hurley between 1953 and 1955.
In spite of initial differences in the establishment of S.24 and S.100, pre-treatment with herbicide had no effect upon the cover of sown and unsown perennial ryegrass and white clover two years later. At this date, perennial ryegrass contributed one-quarter and one-eighth, and white clover one-third and one-quarter, to the total cover of renovated and unrenovated plots respectively.
The increase in dry-matter yield resulting from renovation was approximately 10 per cent. This was considered small in relation to the estimated improvement in yield brought about by grazing management and manuring in the course of the trial.
In experiment B, plots receiving herbicide were given differential management and manurial treatments after spraying in an attempt to control the ingress of undesirable creeping grasses. The results indicated that this ingress could be checked by close grazing soon after spraying.  相似文献

The herbs chicory ( C ichorium intybus L.) and plantain ( P lantago lanceolata L.) are increasingly popular summer forage cropping options for dairy producers. However, the impact of different establishment methods on their productivity is largely unknown. Four establishment methods for chicory and plantain crops sown into non‐cultivated ryegrass pastures in spring were compared. Establishment methods included direct‐drilling or broadcasting seed into existing pastures, with or without herbicide application before sowing in a 2 × 2 factorial design. It was hypothesized that plant establishment and growth would be enhanced by spraying to kill existing ryegrass pasture and direct‐drilling herbs (Spray and Drill, SD) compared with broadcasting seed with no herbicide application (Unsprayed and Broadcast, UB). This hypothesis was supported with an additional 2·1–2·3 t DM ha?1 grown over 201 d from swards established by SD, compared with swards established by UB. The SD method also increased the plant density of the herbs and reduced the proportion of weed species. Spraying and direct drilling is more expensive than broadcasting seed with no herbicide application, but the increase in yield means that extra feed can be supplied at less than half the cost of purchasing the equivalent amount of feed. Therefore, for optimal economic outcomes, chicory and plantain swards should be established by applying herbicide to existing pasture and direct‐drilling seed.  相似文献

Six dryland pastures were established at Lincoln University, Canterbury, New Zealand, in February 2002. Production and persistence of cocksfoot pastures established with subterranean, balansa, white or Caucasian clovers, and a perennial ryegrass‐white clover control and a lucerne monoculture were monitored for nine years. Total annual dry‐matter (10.0–18·5 t DM ha?1) and sown legume yields from the lucerne monoculture exceeded those from the grass‐based pastures in all but one year. The lowest lucerne yield (10 t ha?1 yr?1) occurred in Year 4, when spring snow caused ungrazed lucerne to lodge and senesce. Cocksfoot with subterranean clover was the most productive grass‐based pasture. Yields were 8·7–13·0 t DM ha?1 annually. Subterranean clover yields were 2·4–3·7 t ha?1 in six of the nine years which represented 26–32% of total annual production. In all cocksfoot‐based pastures, the contribution of sown pasture components decreased at a rate equivalent to 3·3 ± 0·05% per year (R= 0·83) and sown components accounted for 65% of total yield in Year 9. In contrast, sown components represented only 13% of total yield in the ryegrass‐white clover pastures in Year 9, and their contribution declined at 10·1 ± 0·9% per year (R= 0·94). By Year 9, 79% of the 6.6 t ha?1 produced from the ryegrass‐white clover pasture was from unsown species and 7% was dead material. For maximum production and persistence, dryland farmers on 450–780 mm yr?1 rainfall should grow lucerne or cocksfoot‐subterranean clover pastures in preference to ryegrass and white clover. Inclusion of white clover as a secondary legume component to sub clover would offer opportunities to respond to unpredictable summer rainfall after sub clover has set seed.  相似文献

Perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) is one of the most valuable temperate pasture grasses in the world. Understanding seed germination in response to temperature can help determine its optimal seeding times. Germination tests for two cultivars of perennial ryegrass (cv. 'Turfstar' and cv. 'Transtar') were conducted by applying thirty-six constant and alternating temperature regimes, ranging from 5 to 40°C (16 h night/8 h day). Responses in germination rate to these temperature regimes were then used to construct a quadratic response surface, giving estimated germination rates with confidence intervals at P  ≤   0·05 for both cultivars. Optimum germination rate occurred over a range of regimes: 15/25, 20/25, 20/30 and 25/30°C. Furthermore, a wide range in diurnal alternating temperatures resulted in maximum seed germination rate for cv. 'Transtar', while no constant temperature regime supported maximum germination rate for cv. 'Turfstar'. A temperature-dependent germination rate function for perennial ryegrass was developed which could be used in the future to predict location-specific optimum seeding times when national or regional monthly temperature data are available.  相似文献

Weed management is among the main factors limiting cultivation of castor (Ricinus communis) in extensive fields, particularly when labor is scarce or expensive. This experiment evaluated the efficiency of weed management programs using preemergence (clomazone, pendimethalin, and trifluralin) and a postemergence herbicide (chlorimuron-ethyl) applied at 20 days after emergence in castor plants cv. BRS Energia under rainfed conditions in Apodi, Brazil. No phytotoxicity was observed on the castor plants, and the postemergence herbicide significantly increased castor seed yield to 1466 kg ha−1 complementing the weed control of preemergence herbicides treatments in which seed yield was 1207 kg ha−1. Seed yield on weedy and weed-free treatments was 760 and 1971 kg ha−1, respectively. Weeds were kept under a satisfactory control up to 40 days after emergence. This program resulted in reasonable weed control because the preemergence herbicides controled monocotyledon weeds, while the postemergence herbicide controlled broad leafed species being selective to castor plants.  相似文献

Single pugging events, which involve remoulding of the soil around the hooves of livestock during treading, of moderate or severe pugging intensity were imposed in plots in a long‐term white clover‐ryegrass pasture during spring, by using dairy cows at varying stocking rates (4·5 cows 100 m?2 for 1·5 or 2·5 h respectively). Changes in the growth and morphology of white clover were investigated over the following 12 months. Defoliation at approximately 3‐week intervals was carried out by mowing. Annual herbage production was reduced following moderate and severe pugging proportionately by 0·16 and 0·34 compared with the non‐pugged control treatment. The corresponding decreases in white clover production were 0·09 and 0·52 respectively. Annual perennial ryegrass production was reduced by 0·37 under severe pugging. Pugging had an immediate adverse effect on growth of white clover which persisted for up to 156 d, and coincided with a large decrease in the proportion of white clover in herbage over the same period (e.g. 0·40 vs. 0·12, in control and severely pugged treatments, respectively, on day 112). In comparison, recovery in ryegrass growth was apparent after 50 d in severely pugged treatments, indicating that white clover is more vulnerable to severe pugging than perennial ryegrass. Analysis of individual white clover plants extracted from turves (300 mm × 300 mm) showed that direct hoof damage, fragmentation and burial of stolons were the major factors which reduced white clover production, rather than the changes in soil physical properties measured. Morphological characteristics associated with plant size (e.g. stolon length, growing points, and leaf numbers) all decreased under pugging. The situation had reversed by late summer, with larger plants dominating pugged plots, and coincided with the recovery of the proportion of white clover in herbage. Strategic pasture management practices, such as restricted grazing and the use of stand‐off pads when soils are overly wet, are suggested as means of minimizing treading damage to pasture and reducing negative impacts on the growth and productivity of white clover.  相似文献

Winter cover crops were evaluated for their effect on Amaranthus palmeri establishment and growth in cotton production. Cover crops examined included rye and four winter legumes: narrow-leaf lupine, crimson clover, Austrian winter pea, and cahaba vetch. Each legume was evaluated alone and in a mixture with rye. Cover crop biomass in monoculture was greatest for rye and lupine (>6750 kg ha1), while clover, pea, and vetch were less and ranged from 2810 to 4610 kg ha1. Cover crop biomass was more than doubled when rye was mixed with clover or vetch relative to the legume monoculture. In early-June, A. palmeri densities were 46 seedlings m2 in the non-disturbed areas between cotton rows in the fallow, while populations were <4 seedlings m2 with rolled vetch or pea and 18 and 29 seedlings m2 in rolled clover and lupine. Rye and legume mixtures reduced A. palmeri densities to <3 seedlings m2, while rye monocultures had 8 seedlings m2. There were no differences in A. palmeri densities (≥144 plants m2) in the cotton row among cover crop treatments. By late-June, rye and winter pea controlled A. palmeri in the row middle >80% relative to the non-cover crop fallow treatment, while control from clover, vetch and lupine ranged from 64 to 70%. The relationship between A. palmeri control in between cotton rows and cover crop biomass was described by a log-logistic regression model with 4530 kg ha1 providing median weed control (Bio50); predicted A. palmeri control was 25, 50, and 75% from 2950, 4900, and 8600 kg ha1 cover crop biomass, respectively. However, A. palmeri plants in the cotton rows prevented yield production in the absence of herbicides. Where A. palmeri was controlled with herbicides, the highest yields occurred following rye, with lower yields following lupin/rye mixture and treatments including pea. Management of herbicide resistant weed species requires diverse management tactics; this may include high-biomass cover crops to reduce weed establishment between crop rows. However, greater research effort is needed to devise weed management options for the crop row that do not rely exclusively on the diminishing array of herbicide tools.  相似文献

Four cultivars of perennial ryegrass (intermediate diploid cv. Talbot and tetraploid cv. Barlatra, and late diploid cv. Parcour and tetraploid cv. Petra) were each sown at 10,20 and 30 kg ha-1, all with 3 kg ha-1 of white clover cv. Donna. Herbage productivity was measured over 3 harvest years, 1982–84. under two annual rates of fertilizer N (0 and 150 kg ha-1); the 150 kg ha-1 rate was split equally between March and August applications. Fertilizer N increased total herbage DM production; the 3-year means for the 0 and 150 kg ha-1 N rates were 8·04 and 8·91 t ha-1, respectively. In successive years, total herbage responses to N (kg DM (kg N applied)-1) were 6·6, 35 and 72 (overall mean, 58). Mean white clover DM production over the 3 years was reduced from 4·48 t ha-1 at nil N to 2·82 t ha-1 at the 150 kg ha-1 rate, a fall of 37%. Grass seed rate did not influence total herbage production or white clover performance. The two intermediate perennial ryegrass cultivars had a marginal advantage in total herbage production over the two late cultivars, but white clover content and production were higher with tetraploids than diploids. It is concluded that the value of increased herbage production from strategic use of fertilizer N has to be weighed against its depressive effect on white clover performance; application of 75 kg ha ha-1 N in both spring and autumn was excessively high if maintenance of a good white clover content in the sward is an objective. There is considerable flexibility in the grass: clover seed ratio in seeds mixtures. Modern highly-productive perennial ryegrass varieties do not differ substantially in compatibility with white clover but tetraploids permit better clover performance than diploids.  相似文献

Five pasture treatments: (1) controlled grazing, (2) controlled grazing + lime, (3) controlled grazing + lime + phosphate, (4) controlled grazing + lime + phosphate + oversown white clover and (5) controlled grazing + lime + phosphate + oversown white clover + oversown perennial ryegrass were applied to three semi-natural hill grassland communities. The communities were those dominated by Agrostis/Festuca, Molinia and Nardus. The proportion of Nardus at the Nardus-dominant site was substantially reduced by herbicide before treatments were applied. All treatments were grazed simultaneously by mature wether sheep on three occasions each year. There were two grazing periods each of 4 weeks duration between mid-May and mid-August with a further grazing period of 3 weeks starting mid-October. During each grazing period stock numbers were set so that a residual herbage mass of 560 kg DM ha ?1 remained at the end of the grazing period. Measurements of net herbage accumulation (NHA) were made annually over a period of 13 years at each site. The green:dead ratio of grasses, species composition of the pasture and the pH of the soil were measured at intervals during the experiment. Estimates of mean annual NHA ranged from 3860 kg DM ha?1 for treatment 1 (controlled grazing) to 5170 kg DM ha?1 for treatment 5 (oversown white clover and perennial ryegrass). The application of lime and phosphate increased annual NHA by 300–350 kg DM ha?1 with a further increase of around 400 kg DM ha?1 when white clover was sown. Increases in NHA between year 1 and year 13 ranged from 30% for treatment 1 to around 55% for treatment 5. Although there was no difference in the mean NHA between sites, the herbage from the Agrostis/Festuca site contained a higher proportion of green grass and white clover than that from the other sites. The highest levels of green grass and white clover were found on the oversown treatments at each site. The grazing pressure exerted produced relatively little change in the botanical composition at the Agrostis/Festuca site. At the Molinia-dominant site the Molinia was largely replaced by Nardus during the first 6 years and Nardus also increased in cover at the Nardus site. Application of lime and phosphate generally increased the proportion of Poa pratensis, Festuca rubra and Agrotis tenuis but did not halt the spread of Nardus at the Molinia and Nardus sites. White clover and perennial ryegrass were successfully introduced by oversowing and proportions remained high throughout the 13 years. The cover by bryophyte spp. increased at all sites with the greatest increases occurring in each case on the less comprehensive pasture treatments. These results suggest that on Agrostis/Festuca-dominant pastures herbage biomass production can be increased with relatively low-cost pasture treatments while maintaining Species diversity. However, Nardus and Molinia dominant pastures are likely to require more comprehensive pasture treatments involving sown grasses and white clover to provide herbage of acceptable quality and avoid an increase in Nardus and bryophytes in the sward. With a regime of episodic summer grazing and the addition of fertilizers oversown pastures can be maintained over long periods of time.  相似文献

A general model of crop yield response to herbicide application is proposed. The model includes three components: the effect of herbicide dosage on weed density, the effect of surviving weed density on crop yield and the effect of herbicide directly on the crop. The model is used to estimate the response of wheat yield to application of diclofop-methyl to control ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) in Australia. It is found that the competitiveness of ryegrass plants surviving treatment is reduced by the treatment and that the proportion of yield loss at a given ryegrass density is not independent of the absolute weed-free yield. The response function is used to calculate economic thresholds and optimal herbicide dosages.  相似文献

White clover‐grass mixtures should provide swards with a high dry matter (DM) yield with a clover proportion of at least 0·30. This study assessed the compatibility of one white clover variety selected for competitive ability (Giga) and four other large‐leaved clover varieties (Aran, Espanso, Fantastico and Regal) in mown binary mixtures with each of four grass companions (cocksfoot cv. Padania, hybrid ryegrass cv. AberExcel, Italian ryegrass cv. Crema, and tall fescue cv. Magno) over 3 years in northern Italy. On average, the mixtures including Giga had at least a two‐fold greater clover proportion in the total harvested DM (P < 0·01) and contained fewer weeds (P < 0·10) than those with other clover varieties, and also tended to have the highest total DM yields. On average, mixtures containing AberExcel had clover proportions of >0·25 but gave the lowest total DM yields, whereas those of Magno maximized total DM and had a higher proportion of clover than Padania or Crema. No clover × grass interaction was detected (P > 0·05). The association with Giga allowed the tall fescue‐based mixture to attain a clover proportion 0·331 along with a top‐yielding total DM. This mixture, compared with the only one without Giga that displayed a near‐sufficient clover proportion (Espanso with AberExcel), exhibited a 21·7% higher total DM (P < 0·05) and had far fewer weeds.  相似文献

Two common production constraints of dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) in Ontario are annual weeds and anthracnose (caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum). Dry bean is not considered a competitive crop and weed interference can result in substantial yield losses, while anthracnose is considered one of the most devastating diseases in dry bean production. A study conducted in Ontario Canada, examined the effect of two herbicide programs on weed management, thiamethoxam insecticide treatment on plant enhancement and three fungicide programs on anthracnose development in a navy bean cv. ‘OAC Rex’. The premium herbicide program (s-metolachlor + imazethapyr) reduced percent weed ground cover relative to the economic herbicide program (trifluralin) in five of six locations. Thiamethoxam increased emergence and vigour at only one location, which contradicts reported benefits of thiamethoxam on plant health. The herbicide or thiamethoxam treatments did not affect anthracnose disease severity, visible seed quality, net yield or economic return. The fungicide seed treatment was often superior to the untreated control, for a number of the parameters measured. The application date of the foliar fungicide, relative to the onset of disease, varied between site-years. This dramatically influenced the fungicide’s effectiveness. Foliar fungicides increased seed quality and net economic return compared to the control when applied prior to disease development. The combination of fungicide seed treatment followed by a foliar fungicide provided the largest reduction in anthracnose severity.  相似文献

The nitrogen supply plays an important role in achieving quality characteristics in organic potato farming. Different defoliation systems of ryegrass–clover may influence the amount of fixed nitrogen available to the tubers. In a field experiment, the effect of different defoliation systems (cutting, mulching and a combination of them) of the pre-crop ryegrass–clover on selected quality attributes of organically grown potatoes, destined for processing into French fries (cv. Agria) or crisps (cv. Marlen), were conducted in two consecutive years (2003 and 2004). Parameters studied included compounds related to the sensory properties of potato food (tuber dry matter, starch, reducing sugars) as well as nutritional quality (nitrogen, minerals). Selected agronomic parameters such as total tuber yields and tuber size distribution were also compared. Furthermore, the influence of additional slurry fertilisation and 4 months of storage on these parameters were investigated. Total yields and portion of tuber yield 50–60 mm were significantly affected by the pure mulching variant in 2003. In 2003, the starch concentration at harvest, as well as after storage, was above the required minimum of 22% (cv. Marlen) and 19% (cv. Agria), while in 2004, this was slightly beneath these values. In 2004, a significant increase of starch concentration by the pure cutting variant was observed. In both years, mulched ryegrass–clover caused a decrease in tuber DM contents of 2.10 and 3.54%, respectively, compared to the cutting systems. Fertilisation significantly decreased DM and starch concentration. In 2004, the reducing sugar concentration of tubers of cv. Marlen from the pure cutting system was with 2.1 g kg?1 FM above the required maximum of 1.5 g kg?1 for crisps. In addition, storage led to a three to fivefold increase of reducing sugars concentrations in the tubers in this year. After slurry fertilisation, 8.8% higher N contents and up to 36% higher K concentrations were measured. Mulching of the pre-crop combined with slurry application led to an up to 61% higher tuber K concentration compared to the cutting system. The results indicate that different defoliation systems of the pre-crop ryegrass–clover and slurry fertilisation had only minor effects on internal tuber quality attributes. Quality parameters were more affected by the prevailing weather conditions in combination with the genotype of different potato cultivars.  相似文献

Germination of annual pasture species was studied under controlled‐environment conditions in south‐western Australia at temperatures in the range from 4°C to 35°C. Subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) and Wimmera ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) had a germination of 90% between 12°C and 29°C, whereas capeweed (Arctotheca calendula) had a high germination percentage in a much narrower temperature range with an optimum of 25°C. Growth of subterranean clover, capeweed and Wimmera ryegrass between 28 and 49 days after sowing (DAS) was also studied at two photon flux densities, 13 and 30 mol m?2 d?1, and at diel temperatures in the range from 15/10°C to 33/28°C. Pasture species grown at a density of 1000 plants m?2 accumulated at least twice the amount of shoot dry matter when subjected to temperatures of 21/16°C and 27/22°C, compared with a lower temperature of 15/10°C and a higher temperature of 33/28°C. Except at the highest temperature and at high photon flux density, capeweed had lower green area indices (GAI) than the other two species at 28 DAS. Crop growth rates between 28 and 49 DAS were higher in Wimmera ryegrass than in the other two species, whereas subterranean clover had a lower relative growth rate than the other two species at all temperatures and both photon flux densities. Subterranean clover and capeweed intercepted a greater proportion of the incident radiation compared with Wimmera ryegrass. The values of radiation interception and GAI were used to estimate the number of DAS to reach 75% radiation interception [f(0·75)]. The number of days to reach f(0·75) decreased with increasing temperature from 15/10°C to reach a minimum at 27/22°C. The time taken to achieve f(0·75) was always shorter by about 10 d when the photon flux density was 30 mol m?2 d?1 in the autumn compared with 13 mol m?2 d?1 in the winter. These results are discussed in relation to the early growth of annual pasture in the field.  相似文献

Four groups of ewes grazed swards of red clover (Trifolium pratense cv. Hungaropoly) for 28-day periods ending 28, 14 or 0 (two groups) days before mating. One of the groups on red clover for the period immediately before mating continued on red clover during mating. At all other times before mating and for 7–8 weeks after mating commenced these ewes were grazed on a predominantly perennial ryegrass-white clover sward. A fifth (control) group was on the ryegrass sward throughout. There was no apparent adverse effect of red clover on ovulation rate, conception rate or embryo mortality.  相似文献

The effect of defoliation interval on growth patterns of contrasting perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)–white clover (Trifolium repens) mixtures was studied. The dynamics of increase in leaf area, light interception and dry-matter (DM) production were measured within successive regrowth periods. No N fertilizer was applied. During 1995 six mixtures were cut eight (F1) or six times (F2) at a stubble height of 5 cm. The stubble composition was stable throughout the growing season: after harvest about 50 g DM m?2 (with a white clover proportion of 0·52) was present with a leaf area index (LAI) of 0·5 (0·38 white clover). The percentage of intercepted radiation after cutting was 20–30% and increased during 3 weeks to about 95%. The relative growth rate of leaf area and DM was higher for white clover than for perennial ryegrass, with the proportion of clover in the LAI and DM increasing during each regrowth period. Mixtures with large-leaved white clover cv. Alice had a lower initial clover content after harvest, but a more rapid increase in clover LAI and DM than mixtures with the smaller leaved cvs Gwenda or Retor. Alice had the highest total and clover LAI and DM at harvest. Cutting frequency affected the change in white clover–perennial ryegrass ratio during regrowth. This was significantly higher in mixtures with Alice than in mixtures with Gwenda, but only under less frequent cutting (F2). In spring there was a mean white clover proportion of about 0·55 in the LAI and 0·45 in the total harvested DM. In summer the white clover proportion in the LAI and DM increased to 0·70–0·75. There was a decline during autumn, especially in F2 and in the mixtures with the small-leaved white clover cv. Gwenda and the medium-leaved cv. Retor. In contrast, grass DM and LAI declined from spring to summer. The decline in clover LAI in autumn was similar in Alice and Gwenda at frequent cutting (F1), but stronger in Gwenda in F2. Retor had the lowest clover specific leaf area (SLA). The SLA values of Alice and Gwenda were similar, SLA being similar between cutting treatments. No differences were found for leaf weight ratio (LWR) among the three white clover cultivars or between the grass cultivars, and LWR was not affected by cutting treatment. Defoliation interval had limited effects on the growth pattern and leaf characteristics of perennial ryegrass–white clover mixtures.  相似文献
