The effects of fertilizer treatment on nutrient transfers to the forest floor were examined in regrowth Eucalyptus diversicolor F. Muell. forest. Dry weight and nutrient content of leaf litterfall and total litterfall were measured for 3 years in a stand to which two levels of N (0, 200 kg ha-1 year-1) were applied each year at each of three levels of a single initial application of P (0, 30, 200 kg ha-1). Annual accessions of litter to the forest floor were significantly increased by additions of both N (by 17%, 18% and 21% in the 3 years) and 200 kg P ha-1 (by 8%, 8% and 4% in the 3 years) but there was no interaction between effects of N and P treatments. Fertilizer application also had a significant effect on the nutrient content of leaf litterfall and total litterfall. Concentration of N in leaf litterfall was 9% to 23% greater on plots treated with N fertilizer compared to untreated plots. The amounts of N in litterfall were about 30% greater on N-treated compared to untreated plots. On plots treated with 200 kg P ha-1, P concentrations in leaf litter were 50% to 100% greater than in litter from plots receiving no P. Application of 200 kg P ha-1 increased the amounts of P in annual litterfall by 32% to 87%. The greatest increase in P accessions occurred soon after fertilizer treatment. The amounts of Ca, K, and Na in litterfall were also significantly increased by fertilizer application. For Ca and K this was due partly to increases in element concentrations in litterfall following application of treatments. The effect of fertilizers on internal recycling of plant nutrients and on litter accumulation and nutrient dynamics in forest floor litter is discussed.  相似文献

Biomass and nutrient transfer (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) leaf litter fall, as well as decomposition and nutrient release, were studied in four mature forest stands situated in Central and South Sweden. Bilberry leaf litter fall amounted to between 33 and 55 kg ha‐1 yr‐1 in the four stands. Only minor differences between sites were noted for litter concentrations of N, P and Ca, whereas K and Mg showed somewhat larger variability. Relative amounts of the five nutrient elements in the litter fall were generally in the order N > Ca > K > Mg > P. The amounts of nutrients returned to the forest floor by the annual leaf litter fall in the stands ranged from 0.4 to 0.8 kg ha‐1 for N, 0.4 to 0.6 kg ha‐1 for Ca, 0.2 to 0.7 kg ha‐1 for K, 0.1 to 0.2 kg ha‐1 for Mg and 0.04 to 0.08 kg ha‐1 for P.

The decomposition of the local bilberry leaf litter was followed by means of litterbags during three years. At all sites there was an extremely rapid mass loss from the litter (between 45% and 54%) during the first four to five months of decomposition. After this initial phase, the decomposition rates decreased markedly and after three years the accumulated mass losses of the litters varied between 64% and 78% at the studied sites. After two and three years of decomposition, three of the sites exhibited almost similar litter mass losses whereas at the fourth site the litter was decomposed to a significantly lower degree. The pattern of nutrient release from the decomposing bilberry leaf litter differed somewhat from site to site. Minor differences were, however, noted for P, Ca and Mg while N and K were more strongly retained in the litter at one of the sites.  相似文献

Yields under alley cropping might be improved if the most limiting nutrients not adequately supplied or cycled by the leaves could be added as an inorganic fertilizer supplement. Three historic leaf management strategies had been in effect for 3 years ina Leucaena leucocephala alley cropping trial on the Lilongwe Plain of central Malawi : 1) leaves returned; 2) leaves removed; and 3) leaves removed, with 100 kg inorganic N ha−1 added. An initial soil analysis showed P status to be suboptimal under all strategies. A confounded 34 factorial experiment was conducted with the following treatments: leaf management strategy (as above), N fertilizer rate (0, 30, and 60 kg N ha−1), P fertilizer rate (0, 18, and 35 kg P ha−1), and maize population (14,800, 29,600, and 44,400 plants ha−1). Both N and P were yield limiting, and interacted positively to improve yields. The addition of 30 kg N and 18 kg P ha−1 improved yields similarly under all leaf management strategies by an average of 2440 kg ha−1. Increasing the rates to 60 kg N and 35 kg P ha−1 improved yields an additional 1990 kg ha−1 in the ‘leaves returned’ and leaves removed + N’ strategies, but did not improve yields under the ‘leaves removed’ strategy. Lower yields were related to lack of P response at the highest P rate in this treatment, which may have induced Zn deficiency. Plots receiving leaves had higher organic C, total N, pH, exchangeable Ca, Mg, K, and S, and lower C/N ratios in the 0–15 cm soil layer than did plots where leaves had been removed. Leaf removal with N addition was similar to leaf removal alone for all soil factors measured except for organic C and total N, which were higher where N had been added. The results show that N and P were the primary yield-limiting nutrients. Historic N application maintained the soil's ability to respond to N and P on par with leaf additions.  相似文献

Mineral fertilizers were applied to adjacent plantations of 2, 4-year old, hybrid poplars: clone 27 (Northwest, P. deltoides × P. balsamifera) and 794 (Brooks, P. deltoides × P. × petrowskyana), in north eastern Alberta. Fertilization was done in May 2003 to see whether growth rates could be increased and rotations shortened. Three fertilizers (N, NP and NPKS + Cu + Zn) were applied at each of three rates (supplying N at 0, 100 and 200 kg ha−1) in a factorial randomized block design to the two separate plantations. Fertilization with 200 kg ha−1 N and 100 kg ha−1 P increased volume growth of clone 27 by 1 m3 ha−1 year−1 over 2 years. Clone 794 showed no volume response to fertilization, but produced 8.7 m3 ha−1 more than clone 27. Leaf area, dry mass and nutrient concentrations of both clones increased in the first year after fertilization, showing that fertilizer uptake occurred. Decrease in leaf size between 2003 and 2004 was affected by fertilizer level in clone 794. There were differences between some nutrient concentrations in the soils occupied by the two clones, and clone 794 had higher leaf concentrations of N, K, Ca, S, Mn, Zn, B and Mo than clone 27. Fertilization of 4-year old plantations of either clone was unwarranted, and planting clone 794 would be likely to provide greater yield than planting and fertilizing clone 27.  相似文献

Agroforestry systems involving leaf removal for animal fodder may result in rapid depletion of soil fertility. The purpose of this research was to determine if the effects of leaf removal on soil fertility parameters and maize yield in a Leucaena leucocephala alley cropping system could be reversed. Three leaf management strategies in a Leucaena alley cropping trial that had been in effect from 1987 to 1991 were investigated: 1) leaves returned, 2) leaves removed, and 3) leaves removed, with 100 kg inorganic N ha−1 added. In the 1990/91 season, a 34 confounded factorial design was utilized to investigate the effects of leaf management strategy, N rate (0, 30 and 60 kg N ha−1); maize plant population (14,800, 29,600, and 44,400 plants ha−1); and P rate (0, 18, and 35 kg P ha−1). In the 1991/92 and 1992/93 seasons, leaves were applied equally to all plots, and no P was applied. The N rate and plant population treatments were continued, and the same confounded factorial design was implemented to investigate residual leaf management strategy, residual P rate, n rate, and plant population. The yield gap between the plots where leaves had been returned vs. removed narrowed each season due to uniform leaf application. Application of N improved yields during both seasons. Residual effects of the initial P application decreased to only 10% of the total yield in 1992/93. Plant population affected yields only during the season of very good rainfall. Leaf additions resulted in a relative increase in soil pH, total N,and exchangeable Ca, Mg, and K and a decrease C/N ratio in plots that had not previously received leaves. Leaves supplied more K and Zn to the upper 15 cm of soil than were being extracted by the maize crop, but uniform leaf additions eliminated differences in K and Zn uptake. Plant Zn uptake decreased with increasing P rate and plant population, and increased with increasing N rate and a history of leaf return. The results show that applying leaves equilibrated yields within two seasons, and resulted in a relative improvement of several soil properties. The residual effect from P applications was not adequate to maximize yields.  相似文献

Abstract

Pools of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) were examined in the soil and above-ground plant biomass at the end of a 7 year rotation at two E. tereticornis lowland sites and two E. grandis highland sites in Kerala, India. Potential export rates of these nutrients were also examined for different biomass removal scenarios from the plantations. Pools of nutrients were measured in the above-ground components of the tree crop, forest floor and understorey, and in soil down to 1 m depth. At harvest, large quantities of biomass and nutrients are removed from eucalypt plantation sites, with the quantities of nutrients exported unlikely to be replaced through natural atmospheric and weathering inputs. Between 24 Mg ha-1 and 115 Mg ha-1 of biomass was exported in stem wood across the sites, and this increased to 40-145 Mg ha-1 in scenarios where all of the branches, bark and understorey were also exported. Stem wood had the lowest concentration of nutrients and had a relatively low export of nutrient per kg of biomass. On average, 54 kg, 12 kg and 65 kg of N, P and K were removed per hectare in stem wood only, equivalent to 0.46%, 0.17%, and 6.7%, respectively, of above- and below-ground (to 1 m depth) site pools. Export increased to 194 kg, 30 kg, and 220 kg of N, P and K per hectare if the branches, bark and understorey were also removed (equivalent to 1.6%, 0.5% and 24.7% of above- and below-ground site pools down to 1 m depth). Export of Ca and Mg was also high, with an average of 88 kg and 11 kg of Ca and Mg removed per hectare if only the stem wood was taken (3.12% and 1.34% of total above-ground and exchangeable below-ground to 1 m depth), increasing to 501 kg ha-1 and 66 kg ha-1 if the branches, bark and understorey were also removed (21.7% and 11.3% of total above-ground and available below-ground to 1 m depth). Removals of this magnitude represent a significant proportion of site nutrient pools and have the potential to reduce future plantation productivity unless steps are taken to promote retention of biomass and nutrients on site and/or replacement of nutrients through fertilizer application.  相似文献

High foliar nitrogen concentration ([N]) is associated with high rates of photosynthesis and thus high tree productivity; however, at excessive [N], tree productivity is reduced. Reports of excessive [N] in the Douglas-fir forests of the Oregon Coast Range prompted this investigation of growth and needle physiological responses to increasing foliar N concentrations in 1-year-old Douglas-fir seedlings. After 1 year of N fertilization, total seedling biomass increased with each successive increase in N fertilizer concentration, except in the highest N fertilization treatment. Of the many physiological responses that were analyzed, only photosynthetic capacity (i.e., Vcmax), respiration rates and leaf specific conductance (KL) differed significantly between N treatments. Photosynthetic capacity showed a curvilinear relationship with foliar [N], reaching an apparent maximum rate when needle N concentrations exceeded about 12 mg g(-1). In vitro measurements of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (Rubisco) activity suggested that photosynthetic capacity was best related to activated, not total, Rubisco content. Rubisco activation state declined as foliar [N] increased, and based on its significant correlation (r2= 0.63) with foliar Mn:Mg ratios, it may be related to Mn inactivation of Rubisco. Respiration rates increased linearly as foliar N concentration increased (r2= 0.84). The value of K(L) also increased as foliar [N] increased, reaching a maximum when foliar [N] exceeded about 10 mg g(-1). Changes in K(L) were unrelated to changes in leaf area or sapwood area because leaf area to sapwood area ratios remained constant. Cumulative effects of the observed physiological responses to N fertilization were analyzed by modeling annual net CO2 assimilation (Anet) based on treatment specific values of Vcmax, dark respiration (Rdark) and KL. Estimates of Anet were highly correlated with measured total seedling biomass (r2= 0.992), suggesting that long-term, cumulative effects of maximum Rubisco carboxylation, Rdark and KL responses to N fertilization may limit seedling production when foliar N exceeds about 13 mg g(-1) or is reduced to less than about 11 mg g(-1).

Macro- (C, N, P, K, Ca and Mg) and micronutrient (Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn) reservoirs were estimated in the O (Oi+Oe+Oa) and in the A (0–10 cm depth) soil horizons of four stands of Nothofagus pumilio (lenga) from Tierra del Fuego which differ in their forestry characteristics. The type of soil layer (O and A) and the forest structure, as related to above-ground biomass storage, were assessed as a factor of variation in the nutrient reservoirs of both soils layers. Nutrient reservoirs showed similar ranges in both soil layers for total organic C (34–65 Mg ha?1), total N (1.5–3.5 Mg ha?1), rapidly available Ca (1.3–2.7 Mg ha?1) and Mg (0.18–0.36 Mg ha?1). Rapidly available K, available P, and medium-term available Fe and Cu were accumulated preferentially in A the horizons, whereas medium-term available Mn and Zn were mainly stored in the O horizons. The forest structure was not a statistically significant factor of variation on the nutrient reservoirs in the O horizons, although a legacy effect of the accumulated above-ground biomass on nutrient reservoirs in this soil layer can not be discarded. On the contrary, the pools of total organic C, total N, rapidly available K and medium-term available Cu and Zn in the A horizons varied significantly with the different forest structure. In terms of lenga forests sustainability, uppermost soils layers should be preserved as they accumulate most of the soil fertility which is essential for lenga regeneration after logging. The inclusion of the assessment of soil fertility in the management plans of the lenga forests in the ecotone of the Argentinean Tierra del Fuego is strongly recommended, as it will contribute to ensure a successful regeneration of lenga in logged areas.  相似文献

The fall of fine litter was 4.5 tonnes ha–1 y–1,(78% needles) returning to the ground 36.6 kg N, 2.2 kg P, 7.6kg K, 12.1 kg Ca and 2.0 kg Mg. Nutrient input in rainfall (880mm in 1978) was 2.6 kg N, 0.4 kg P, 4.3 kg K, 7.6 kg Ca and1.4 kg Mg. Throughfall was 534 mm. The method of Miller, Cooperand Miller (1976) was used to estimate aerosol contributions, leaching and absorption. Retranslocation estimates were 59.6kg N ha–1 y–1 (55% of Requirement), 8.5 kg P (64%R), 42.0 kg K (56% R) and 1.2 kg Mg (14% R). Retranslocationwas unchanged, but uptake increased with added N % P and decreasedwith added sawdust and glucose. Other typical effects of nutrientamendment were observed: with added N % P growth increased, current tissues had higher concentrations of N and P and litterfalldecreased in the first year but was heavier in the second year:with added sawdust and glucose, growth declined but concentrationsof N and P remained substantially the same.  相似文献

The above-ground biomass and production, below-ground biomass, nutrient (NPK) accumulation, fine roots and foliar characteristics of a 8-year-old silver birch (Betula pendula) natural stand, growing on abandoned agricultural land in Estonia, were investigated. Total above-ground biomass and current annual production after eight growing seasons was 31.2 and 11.9 t DM ha−1, respectively. The production of stems accounted for 62.4% and below-ground biomass accounted for 19.2% of the total biomass of the stand. Carbon sequestration in tree biomass reaches roughly 17.5 t C ha−1 during the first 8 years. The biomass of the fine roots (d < 2 mm) was 1.7 ± 0.2 t DM ha−1 and 76.2% of it was located in the 20 cm topsoil layer. The leaf area index (LAI) of the birch stand was estimated as 3.7 m2 m−2 and specific leaf area (SLA) 15.0 ± 0.1 m2 kg−1. The impact of the crown layer on SLA was significant as the leaves are markedly thicker in the upper part of the crown compared with the lower part. The short-root specific area (SRA) in the 30 cm topsoil was 182.9 ± 9.5 m2 kg−1, specific root length (SRL), root tissue density (RTD) and the number of short-root tips (>95% ectomycorrhizal) per dry mass unit of short roots were 145.3 ± 8.6 m g−1, 58.6 ± 3.0 kg m−3 and 103.7 ± 5.5 tips mg−1, respectively. In August the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, accumulated in above ground biomass, was 192.6, 25.0 and 56.6 kg ha−1, respectively. The annual flux of N and P retranslocation from the leaves to the other tree parts was 57.2 and 3.7 kg ha−1 yr−1 (55 and 27%), respectively, of which 29.1 kg ha−1 N and 2.8 kg ha−1 P were accumulated in the above-ground part of the stand.  相似文献

The browse potential of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) and thornless honey locust [Gleditsia triacanthos f. inermis (L.) Zabel] has not been adequately tested. Our objective was to determine effects of fertilization and pollarding on biomass and foliar nutritive value in separate studies of black locust and thornless honey locust in Arkansas, USA. Shoots were sampled monthly for two consecutive growing seasons in 2002 and 2003 to determine foliar, shoot, and total aboveground biomass, shoot basal diameter, and foliar nutritive value (crude protein and in vitro digestibility). Black locust yielded more foliar biomass when pollarded at 50 or 100 cm and fertilized with 600 kg P ha−1, than at 5 cm with or without P, averaging 3.5 Mg dry matter ha−1. Black locust foliar crude protein and in vitro dry matter digestibility ( ≤ 170 and 534 g kg−1, respectively) decreased as leaves aged, but still met maintenance needs for beef cattle (Bos taurus L.). Thornless honey locust had little agronomic potential because of slow establishment, low foliar yield (330 kg ha−1), and a 2% reversion to undesirable thorny phenotype. Black locust should be considered for livestock browse when drought induces semi-dormancy of herbaceous forages.  相似文献

An alley cropping experiment was conducted from 1986 to 1992 near Cotonou, Benin Republic on a field previously used as four-year bush-fallow. A no-tree control was compared with Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit and Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. grown in 4 m distant hedgerows. In the same experiment, application of 90-39-75 kg ha-1 NPK fertiliser vs. no fertiliser and maize-cassava intercropping vs. rotation of sole crops was also tested. Topsoil samples (0–30 cm) were taken initially and again after four and six years. Alley cropping enhanced nitrogen recycling relative to the no-alley control by 253 kg haha-1 yr-1 for Leucaena and 131 kg ha-1 yr-1 for Cajanus in the overall average but a maximum of 22 kg N ha-1 yr-1 was recovered in total crop exports. Apparent fertiliser-N recovery increased from a low average of 14% in the first year to 66% in the second year up to a maximum of 109% in the no-tree control in the last year. Soil nutrient depletion during the six years was significant for all nutrients except P, K falling from 0.5 to 0.1 cmolc kg-1 soil and N from 0.08 to 0.05%. Hedgerow accumulation of N in the topsoil- plant system calculated as difference to a no-tree control was only 18 to 37 kg ha-1 yr-1 during the first four years after clearing, increasing to 208 kg in Leucaena and 111 kg ha-1 yr-1 in Cajanus without NPK during the last two years. During the first four years, average N, K, Ca and Mg losses from the topsoil-plant system of 223 kg, 160 kg, 176 kg and 80 kg ha-1 yr-1 were high but probably stored in the subsoil because corresponding leaching losses were only 10, 1, 15 and 6 kg ha-1 yr-1 at 150 cm depth during the second to fourth cropping year. Beyond the fourth year, markedly reduced nutrient losses from the topsoil and stable food crop yields in no-tree plots suggest that continuous maize-cassava cropping using balanced rates of mineral fertiliser is producing sustainable yields with almost closed nutrient cycles of the soil-plant system on our site. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Abstract

Performance of three, evenaged leguminous tree species (Acacia nilotica, A. auriculiformis and Pithecellobium duke) was evaluated on sodic soil sites (pH 9.6) at Biomass Research Centre, Banthra, Lucknow (north India). Species differed significantly in respect to plant survival, growth and productivity since beginning of its growth as observed at the age of five, 10 and, 15 years. Acacia nilotica had highest average girth at breast height (60.5 cm) and stand biomass (161 Mg ha-1) in spite of its lowest plants survival after 15 years of growth. A. auriculiformis ranked next to it with 131 Mg ha-1 productivity. Basal area ranged from 12.8 to 23 m2 ha-1 in different species. P. duke performed poorly as it had only 71 Mg ha-1 of biomass. Average leaf area per hectare in different species ranged from4,129 m2 ha-1 to 16,090 m2 ha-1 after 15 years of growth. A. nilotica also showed superiority in respect to energy content in woody biomass (2,467 GJ ha-1) and fuel wood value index (1694) as compared to the other two species. At the age of 15 years, litter accumulation over the soil surface resulted in marked reductions in soil pH, electrical conductivity, bulk density and sodium content, and increase in soil porosity, organic carbon and nitrogen content, particularly in the uppermost layer of the mineral soil (0-5 cm). A. nilotica exhibited greater efficiency in terms of soil amelioration followed by A. auriculiformis. The relative ranking of three species was A. nilotica > A. auriculiformis > P. duke, respectively. This indicated greater promise of A. nilotica for biomass production, energy harvest, and soil amelioration on degraded soil sites. Matching tree species to soil conditions needs serious considerations in order to expand site specific afforestation programs and to ameliorate vast tracts of degraded soil sites.  相似文献

Afforestation of degraded croplands by planting N2-fixing trees in arid regions is highly recognized. However, fixation of atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2) by woody perennials is often limited on phosphorus (P) poor soils, while any factor limiting N nutrition inhibits tree growth. In a two-factorial field experiment, the effect of three P amendments was examined during 2006–2008 on N2 fixation, biomass production, and foliage feed quality of actinorhizal Elaeagnus angustifolia L. and leguminous Robinia pseudoacacia L. With the 15N natural abundance method, N2 fixation was quantified based on foliar and whole-tree sampling against three non-N2-fixing reference species: Gleditsia triacanthos L., Populus euphratica Oliv., and Ulmus pumila L. The P applications, in March 2006 and April 2007 only, included (i) high-P (90 kg P ha?1), (ii) low-P (45 kg P ha?1), and (iii) 0-P. After 3 years, the average proportion of N derived from atmosphere (Ndfa, %) increased from 78 % with 0-P to 87 % with high P when confounded over both N2-fixing species. With the used density of 5,714 trees ha?1, the total amount of N2 fixed (Ndfa, kg N ha?1) with high-P increased from 64 kg N ha?1 (year 1) to 807 kg N ha?1 (year 3) in E. angustifolia and from 9 kg N ha?1 (year 1) to 155 kg N ha?1 (year 3) in R. pseudoacacia. Total above-ground biomass increases were too variable to be significant. Leaf N content and therewith also leaf crude protein content, which is an indicator for feed quality, increased significantly (24 %) with high-P when compared to 0-P for E. angustifolia. Overall findings indicated the suitability of the two N2-fixing species for afforestating salt-affected croplands, low in soil P. With P-applications as low as 90 kg P ha?1, the production potential of E. angustifolia and R. pseudoacacia, including the supply of protein-rich feed, could be increased on salt-affected croplands.  相似文献

Effects of enhanced nitrogen deposition on nutrient foliar concentrations and net photosynthesis of sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh) and red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) were evaluated at the Bear Brook Watershed in Maine (BBWM). The BBWM is a paired-watershed forest ecosystem study with one watershed treated since 1989 with bimonthly dry ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) additions at a rate of 25.2 kg N ha−1 year−1, while the other watershed serves as a reference. The (NH4)2SO4 treatment resulted in significant increases in foliar N concentrations for all three species and significant reductions in foliar Ca, Mg and Zn concentrations for American beech and red spruce. Treatment effects on foliar concentrations of other nutrients were not significant in any species. Despite higher N concentrations in all species, only treated sugar maple showed significantly higher photosynthetic rates. The non-response in net photosynthesis to higher foliar N in American beech and red spruce might be attributed to their low foliar Ca and/or Mg concentrations. Higher net photosynthetic rates in sugar maple might be explained by the higher foliar N and by the ability of this species to maintain an adequate Ca and Mg supply. Results suggested that nutrient imbalances due to inadequate supply of Ca and Mg might have counteracted a potential increase in net photosynthesis induced by higher N concentrations in American beech and red spruce.  相似文献

A major goal for sustainable forestry management is to prevent a decline in soil fertility over time. The impact of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilization on the nutrients in the foliage, standing litter and topsoil (0 to ?10?cm) at the end of the third crop rotation (at age 15?years) was determined. Three quantities (20/20, 40/40 and 80/80?kg?ha?1) of both P and K fertilizer was applied at different stages of stand development (all at planting, all post-pruning at age 5?years, or applying 20/20 at planting and the rest post-pruning). The results showed that the effect of P fertilizer was more pronounced than the effect of K fertilizer. Compared to the control, the application of 80/80 PK fertilizer increased the concentration of plant available P (Bray II) in the first ?10?cm of the topsoil from 3 to 12?mg P kg?1 and increased the foliar P level to 0.13%. The foliar P as well as the concentration of plant available P in the topsoil increased when the fertilizer was applied post-pruning. The split application of either 40/40 or 80/80 PK fertilizer increased the stemwood P concentration by 50%, compared to the 23?mg P kg?1 on the control plots. Application of the 40/40 and 80/80 quantities of fertilizer increased the dry mass (DM) of the standing litter layer by 27?Mg DM ha?1 (35%), which also affected the P and K content per hectare. A larger proportion of the applied fertilizer-K than fertilizer-P was removed from the site in stemwood and stembark, indicating that the re-application of K in the subsequent rotations will be important for sustainable production.  相似文献

In a 3-year field study, the effects of substitution of nitrogen requirement of maize through Leucaena leaves were studied on runoff, soil loss, maize and wheat yield and economic returns. The treatments were (1) 80 kg N ha-;1 all through Leucaena leaves (80 L), (2) 40 kg N through Leucaena leaves + 40 kg N ha-;1 through fertilizer (40 L + 40 F), (3) 20 kg N through Leucaena leaves + 60 kg N ha-;1 through fertilizer (20 L + 60 F), (4) 80 kg N ha-;1 all through fertilizer (80 F), and (5) control (No fertilizer). Green Leucaena leaf biomass (containing 3.3% N on dry basis) was incorporated every year in 15 cm top soil two weeks before sowing of summer maize.Other treatments being almost equal, runoff was reduced marginally in treatment 20 L + 60 F which was attributed to better crop growth in this treatment. Mean minimum soil loss (6.202 t ha-;1) also occurred in treatment 20 L + 60 F. Soil loss in 80 L was 13% less than in 80 F. Maize yield was at par in 80 L and 80 F. However, mean maximum yield of maize was obtained with 20 L + 60 F.Residual effect of incorporation of Leucaena leaves to maize crop was observed on wheat yield. The mean yield differences were statistically at par in all the treatments except control. The total mean net returns were statistically at par in 80 L and 80 F. However, significantly higher mean net returns (Rs 6811 ha-;1; one US$ = Rs30) were obtained with 20 L + 60 F. Substitution of N through Leucaena leaves even in small quantity may be helpful to small holders, particularly where chemical fertilizers are in short supply or too expensive.  相似文献

This study was conducted to assess the suitability of two fallow species that are indigenous to West Africa, M. thonningii (Schum and Thonn) and P. santalinoides (L'Her), for alley cropping with maize and their effect on soil chemical properties. It was carried out during the rain-fed cropping season at Ibadan, Nigeria and Mbalmayo, Cameroon in 1993 and 1994. Total dry matter of P. santalinoides prunings was higher at the two sites than that of M. thonningii by about 35% to 37%. Maize grain yield in plots supplied with prunings was significantly higher (P > 0.05) than in control (no prunings or fertilizer application) at Ibadan. Grain yield in plots supplied with prunings plus 40 kg ha−1 urea fertilizer gave significantly higher yields than plots supplied with 80 kg N ha−1 urea fertilizer only. At Mbalmayo, there was no significant difference between grain yield in plots supplied with 80 kg N ha−1 and plots supplied with prunings plus 40 kg N ha-1 urea fertilizer though the latter had higher yields. Grain yield was also higher in the middle rows than in rows adjacent to the hedgerows and these were not significantly different. Weed dry matter was reduced by 27% to 43% when Pterocarpus prunings were applied and 13% to 31% with application of Millettia prunings. Weed flora in both locations changed from grasses to broad leaved. Soil chemical changes at soil depth 0 to 10 cm showed significant increases (pH, C, N, P and Ca) after two cropping seasons in plots supplied with prunings or prunings plus fertilizer than the initial values. At Mbalmayo, K was lower after cropping in treatments than the initial values while at Ibadan, K and Mg were lower except in plots supplied with Pterocarpus prunings only. P. santalinoides and M. thonningii have significant potential for agroforestry in this sub-region. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
