A field experiment was conducted on an Alfisol (kandic paleustalf) in Abeokuta, Southwestern Nigeria, for two seasons to assess the influence of inorganic and organic fertilizers on nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), nutrient uptake and maize yield. The treatments consisted of three rates of organic fertilizer 0, 5 and 10 t ha?1 in the form of poultry manure and NPK fertilizer (20:10:10) applied at 0 and 120 kg ha?1. Maize (Zea mays) was used as the test crop. The results showed that the combined application of 10 t ha?1 poultry manure and 120 kg ha?1 NPK fertilizer enhanced the uptake of N, P and K better than other treatment combinations. Application of 10 t ha?1 poultry manure alone gave the highest grain yield, which was 67.02% higher than the control in the first season. Complementary application of 5 t ha?1 poultry manure with 120 kg ha?1 NPK 20–10-10 was recommended for grain yield.  相似文献

Nitrogen and sulfur play an important role in maize production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) levels applied in various ratios on maize hybrid Babar yield at Peshawar in 2011 and 2013. Four N levels (120, 160, 200 and 240 kg N ha?1) and four S levels (20, 25, 30 and 35 kg S ha?1) were applied in three splits: a, at sowing; b, V8 stage; c, VT stage in ratios of 10:50:40, 20:50:30 and 30:50:20. Grains ear?1, thousand grain weight, grain yield ha?1 and soil pH were significantly affected by years (Y), N, S and their ratios, while no effect of N, S and their ratios was noted on ears plant?1. Maximum grains ear?1 (390), thousand grain weight (230.1 g) and grain yield (4119 kg ha?1) were recorded in 2013. N increased grains ear?1 (438), thousand grain weight (252 g) and grain yield (5001 kg ha?1) up to 200 kg N ha?1. Each increment of S increased grains ear?1 and other parameters up to 35 kg S ha?1, producing maximum grains ear?1 (430), thousand grain weight (245 g) and grain yield (4752 kg ha?1), while soil pH decreased from 8.06 to 7.95 with the application of 35 kg S ha?1. In the case of N and S ratios, more grains ear?1 (432), heavier thousand grains (246.7 g) and higher grain yield (4806 kg ha?1) were observed at 30:50:20 where 30% of N and S were applied at sowing, 50% at V8 and 20% at VT stage. It is concluded that 200 kg N ha?1 and 35 kg S ha?1 applied in the ratio of 30% at sowing, 50% at V8 and 20% at VT stage is recommended for obtaining a higher yield of maize hybrid Babar.  相似文献

Abstract

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a major nitrogen consuming crop, as nitrogen is considered as an important determinant of its grain yield. Though inorganic fertilizer is widely recommended, the problem of high cost and inaccessibility limit its usage by resource poor farmers. Biochar application provides a new technology for both soil fertility and crop productivity improvement. With limited research on the suitability of biochar for soil improvement practices in Ghana, our objective was to determine the synergistic effect of biochar and inorganic fertilizer on the nitrogen uptake, nitrogen use efficiency, and yield of maize. Field experiment was conducted in Ghana, KNUST, in the major and minor raining seasons. Biochar was applied at 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 t ha?1 and fertilizer N applied at 0, 45, and 90?kg ha?1. The results showed significantly (p??1 supplemented with 45?kg N ha?1 increased N uptake by 200%, and grain yield by 213% and 160% relative to the control in the minor and major rainy seasons, respectively. The greater yield of maize recorded on biochar-amended soils was attributed to the improved N uptake and nitrogen use efficiency. In conclusion, our finding suggests that the application of combined biochar and inorganic N fertilizer is not only ecologically prudent, but economically viable and a practicable alternative to current farmers’ practice of cultivating maize in Ghana.  相似文献

Sorghum is cultivated on Vertisols in the Ethiopian Highlands. An experiment was conducted in the Gumara-Maksegnit watershed in 2013 and 2014 to assess the effect of rate and timing of nitrogen fertilizer application on the possibility to shorten the maturity period and to improve the productivity of sorghum. The experiment was laid out as Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Treatments were nitrogen doses between 0 and 87 kg N ha?1 as urea applied at planting, at knee-height stage or in split doses at both stages. Results showed that application of 23, 41, 64 and 87 kg ha?1 N gave a yield increase of 40, 53, 62 and 69% over the control (0 kg N ha?1), respectively. In addition, split application of 41 kg ha?1, 64 kg ha?1 and 87 kg ha?1 of nitrogen fertilizer, half at planting and half at knee height stage, gave 19%, 15% and 18% increase in sorghum grain yield over a single dose application, respectively. Applying 87 kg ha?1 nitrogen fertilizer with split application half at planting and half at knee height stage, along with 46 kg ha?1 of P2O5, gave the highest grain yield and income.  相似文献

From 2002 to date, a long-term field experiment has been conducted at Lake Carl Blackwell, Oklahoma, with different rates and times of nitrogen (N) fertilizer application to determine their effect on grain yield, protein and N uptake of winter wheat. Trend analysis for N rates (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N ha?1) and orthogonal contrasts for different application times (pre-plant, top-dressed in February and March) were performed. With increasing fertilizer N, wheat grain yield and protein content increased from 2110 kg ha?1 to 6783 kg ha?1 and from 8.96 to 17.19%, respectively. For grain yield, protein, and N use efficiency, split applications of N fertilizer were much more efficient than applying all N pre-plant. Large differences in grain yields were noted for different years at the same N rate (range exceeded 5.0 Mg ha?1) and that illustrated the need for making within-year-specific N rate recommendations.  相似文献

Appropriate nitrogen (N) management practices are of critical importance in improving N use efficiency (NUE), maize (Zea mays) yield and environmental quality. A six-year (2005–2010) on-farm trial was conducted in Ottawa, Canada to assess the effects of N rates and application methods on grain yield and NUE. In four out of the six-year study, grain yield increased by 60–77 kg ha?1 by sidedress, compared to 49–66 kg ha?1 for each kg N ha?1 applied at preplant. Grain yield response to N between the two strategies was similar in the other growing seasons. Sidedress strategy required 15 kg N ha?1 less of the maximum economic rate of N (MERN) than preplant application. Our results indicate that sidedress application of 90–120 kg N ha?1 with a starter of 30 kg N ha?1 resulted in greater yield, grain quality and NUE than preplant N application in this cool, humid and short growing-season region.  相似文献

Dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important legume worldwide and nitrogen (N) is most yield limiting nutrients. A field experiment was conducted for two consecutive years to evaluate response of 15 dry bean genotypes to nitrogen and rhizobial inoculation. The N and rhizobia treatments were (i) control (0 kg N ha?1), (ii) seed inoculation with rhizobia strains, (iii) seed inoculation with rhizobia strains + 50 kg N ha?1, and (iv) 120 kg N ha?1. Straw yield, grain yield, and yield components were significantly influenced by N and rhizobial treatments. Grain yield, straw yield, number of pods m?2, and grain harvest index were significantly influenced by year, nitrogen + rhizobium, and genotype treatments. Year × Nitrogen + rhizobium × genotype interactions were also significant for these traits. Hence, these traits varied among genotypes with the variation in year and nitrogen + rhizobium treatments. Inoculation with rhizobium alone did not produce maximum yield and fertilizer N is required in combination with inoculation. Based on grain yield efficiency index, genotypes were classified as efficient, moderately efficient, and inefficient in nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). NUE defined as grain produced per unit N applied decreased with increasing N rate. Overall, NUE was 23.17 kg grain yield kg?1 N applied at 50 kg N ha?1 and 13.33 kg grain per kg N applied at 120 kg N ha?1.  相似文献

Mucuna has been tested intensively in past years as green manure for intensive maize production in West Africa. However, information is missing about the yield effect of different existing mucuna varieties. Five Mucuna pruriens varieties were grown for 40 weeks followed by sole maize (Zea mays L.) in order to determine differences in biomass production, nitrogen fixation, and effects on maize yield. Mucuna varieties differed in length of growing period, total biomass production (5.9—8.8 Mg ha—1), seed production (0.65—1.3 Mg ha—1), nitrogen (N) uptake (147—222 kg ha—1), N fixation (87—171 kg ha—1), and the amount of N retained in residues (138—218 kg ha—1). The grain yield of maize grown immediately after the short mucuna fallow was significantly higher after mucuna vars. jaspaeda (4.60 Mg ha—1), utilis (3.49 Mg ha—1), and cochinchinensis (3.44 Mg ha—1), compared with a non‐fertilized control (1.93 Mg ha—1) which had a maize crop and vegetation regrowth before. After mucuna vars. ghana and veracruz, 2.90 and 2.65 Mg ha—1 of maize grain were produced, respectively. No significant correlation between mucuna biomass and its N uptake and maize grain yield was found, whereas maize stover yield showed a significant positive correlation. Application of 30, 60, and 90 kg ha—1 N as <?tw=98%>urea on sub‐plots of the control yielded 2.20, 3.19, and 3.46 Mg ha—1 <?tw>of maize grain in the first year. Only the difference between 0 and 90 kg ha—1 N was significant. Fertilizer N equivalent values for mucuna varieties ranged from 41 to 148 kg ha—1. The yield advantage of vars. jaspaeda, utilis, and cochinchinensis versus the control without N fertilizer application was confirmed in the following year, with no significant difference in maize grain yield between mucuna and the control with N fertilizer application.<?show $6#>  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L) residue removed, burnt, or incorporated with or without 0, 60, and 120 kg nitrogen (N) ha?1 effects on maize (Zea mays L) hybrids (Pioneer-3025, Pioneer-30P45, and Kiramat) were assessed at University of Agriculture, Peshawar, Pakistan during 2010 and 2011 for maize production and soil carbon (C) storage. Pioneer-30P45 had higher grain yield, leaf area, and delayed maturity. Residue burning combined with 120 kg N ha?1 produced higher grain yield. The leaf area, leaf area ratio, grain N content, and solar radiation interception were improved with N + residue burnt/incorporated over control. The grain yield was positively correlated with yield parameters. Soil organic carbon (SOC) content were in order of incorporated > burnt > removed at all growth stages (i.e., sowing, tasseling, maturity, and harvesting). Conclusively, wheat residue burnt/incorporated into the soil with 120 kg N ha?1 was best for maize production of Pioneer-30P45; however residue incorporation into the soil improved SOC.  相似文献

Wheat cultivars (‘AC Barrie’, ‘Brook Field’, ‘Hoffman’, and ‘Norwell’) with different protein concentrations were compared under four nitrogen (N) levels (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha?1) in an environment-controlled greenhouse, and the same experiment with an additional N level (200 kg N ha?1) was repeated in the field in 2007. In the greenhouse experiment, application of 100 kg N ha?1 resulted in significantly greater grain yield due mainly to higher number of grains per spike and heavier mean grain weight; in the field study, the 150 kg N ha?1 treatment produced the greatest yield (P<0.01) primarily due to more number of grains per spike. Crude grain protein percentage was increased significantly with each increment of N up to the highest level; however, protein yield (kg ha?1) increased significantly with fertilizer up to 150 kg N ha?1. Leaf chlorophyll contents were increased linearly with increment of N levels up to 150 kg ha?1 both in the greenhouse and field trials while leaf area indices continued to increase up to the highest application rate (200 kg N ha?1). Canopy reflectance, expressed as normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), attained maximum value with 150 kg N ha?1 in the field experiment. Among the varieties tested, “Hoffman” out-yielded other three varieties due to heavier grain weight. Although highest grain and/or plant crude protein content were recorded in ‘AC Barrie’, it was the variety ‘Hoffman’ that produced the highest total protein (kg ha?1) with largest NDVI and leaf area index (LAI) values.  相似文献

We evaluate the feasibility of using foliar-applied molybdenum, (Mo) instead of side-dressed nitrogen (N) in three experiments. In soils with native rhizobia, plants received 0, 30, 60, 90 or 120 kg N ha?1 with +Mo (80 g ha?1) or -Mo. N concentration in leaves (NCL) -Mo ranged from 35.1 to 42.5 g kg?1 and NCL +Mo from 40.3 to 49.2 g kg?1; yield -Mo ranged from 1560 to 3350 kg ha?1and yield +Mo from 2829 to 3567 kg ha?1. In two experiments, NCL or yield -Mo increased linearly or quadratically with increasing N rates, but NCL or yield +Mo did not. In one experiment, NCL increased linearly with increasing N rates and 16% with +Mo relative to –Mo, but yield was not affected significantly. Our results suggest that using Mo fertilizer instead of side-dressed N can allow common bean plants to meet crop demands for N to support yields as high as 3000 kg ha?1.  相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L.) is an important food crop in the Guinea savannas of Nigeria. Despite its high production potential, drought, Striga hermonthica parasitsim, and poor soil fertility particularly nitrogen deficiency limit maize production in the savannas. Breeders at IITA have developed drought- and Striga-tolerant cultivars for testing, dissemination, and deployment in the region. Information on the response of these cultivars to N fertilization is, however, not available. This study evaluated grain yield, total N uptake (TNU), N uptake (NUPE), N utilization (NUTE), and N use efficiency (NUE) of selected maize cultivars along with a widely grown improved maize cultivar at two locations in the Guinea savannas of northern Nigeria. Maize grain yield increased with N application. The average grain yield of the maize cultivars was 76% higher at 30, 156% higher at 60, and 203% higher at 120 kg N ha?1 than at 0 kg N ha?1. This suggests that N is a limiting nutrient in the Nigerian savannas. Five drought-tolerant cultivars produced consistently higher yields when N was added at all levels. These cultivars had either high NUPE or NUTE confirming earlier reports that high N uptake or NUTE improves maize grain yield. The study also confirms earlier reports that maize cultivars that are selected for tolerance to drought are also efficient in uptake and use of N fertilizer. This means that these cultivars can be grown with application of less N fertilizer thereby reducing investment on fertilizers and reduction in environmental pollution.  相似文献

Timely and fitting nitrogen (N) application decreases costs and pollution risk in maize cultivation. To explore the accumulation and remobilization of dry matter (DM), N, phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) in waxy maize under various N topdressings (0?kg ha?1, LN; 150?kg ha?1, MN; 300?kg ha?1, HN) at the jointing stage, a field trial involving two waxy maize varieties (Suyunuo 5 and Yunuo 7) was conducted in 2013–2016. The highest grain yield was obtained under MN mainly due to the highest grain numbers and grain weight. The increase in grain yield under MN was mainly due to the high DM accumulation post-silking, as well as high N, P, and K accumulation and remobilization pre-silking. Generally, the plants had high harvest index (HI) of DM (N, P, and K), partial N fertilizer productivity, and moderate N utilization efficiency (NUE) under MN.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Our aim was to determine the combined effect of brassinolide (BR) and lime on the growth and yield of maize on acid soils of South East Nigeria using two BR levels (0 and 250 mL), two maize varieties [Ikom White (IKW) and Oba-98] and two lime levels (0 kg ha?1 and 500 kg ha?1). The IKW was better (≤ 0.05) in growth morphology than Oba-98; however, Oba-98 was more (p ≤ 0.05) efficient in intercepting radiation (420.16 μmol m?2s?1) than IKW (325.08 μmol m?2s?1). The 500 kg ha?1 lime plus BR improved (≤ 0.05) nitrogen (N) uptake, dry matter yield, harvest index, shoot to root ratio, and grain yield, especially in Oba-98. Thus, the interactive action of BR and lime could increase the soil pH to an extent for enhanced yield of hybrid maize.  相似文献

Leaf color chart (LCC) guides fertilizer nitrogen (N) application to rice as per requirement of the crop on the basis of a critical leaf color. Two field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of silicon (Si) and LCC based N management in aerobic rice. Following LCC-based N management, from 60 to 90 kg N ha?1 and 75 to 100 kg N ha?1 with 10–40% and 25–30% less fertilizer N was used without any reduction in yield as compared to the package of practices of 100 (50 kg N ha?1 as basal + two split of 25 kg N ha?1) kg N ha?1 respectively, during both the seasons. The highest grain yield was noticed with 90 kg N ha?1 (30 kg N ha?1 as basal + LCC-3) and 100 kg N ha?1 (50 kg N ha?1 as basal + two split of 25 kg N ha?1) along with the application of calcium silicate (CaSiO3) at 2 t ha?1 as sources of Si and on par with 60 kg N ha?1 (no basal + LCC-3) and 75 kg N ha?1 (30 kg N ha?1 as basal + LCC-3), respectively, during the season in 2008 and 2009. Higher fertilizer N use efficiency was recorded with Si and need-based N management using LCC-3 rather than recommended dose of fertilizer N.  相似文献

Yield, dry matter production, nitrogen (N) uptake and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) dhan29 were investigated during two consecutive dry (Boro) seasons of 2009–10 and 2010–11. The experiments were set up in a randomized complete block design with three replication having six nitrogen (N) levels of 0, 40, 80 120, 160 and 200 kg ha?1. Nitrogen fertilization increased yield characters, dry matter production and N uptake. The economic optimum rate of N was 166 and 155 kg ha–1 in first and second year, respectively, with corresponding yield of 7.1 and 6.5 t ha?1. NUEs were higher in the first year, decreased with increasing N rates in most cases. Gross return over fertilizer reached the highest Tk 692 in 2009–10 and Tk 489 in 2010–11 with 160 kg N ha–1. The results suggest that BRRI dhan29 should receive an average of 160 kg N ha?1 for economic optimum yield.  相似文献

A wide gap exists between production and consumption of vegetable oils in Pakistan. Thereby, a significant proportion (2.28 million tons) of vegetable oils is being imported at the cost of 2257 million US$. Therefore, the present study was conducted to quantify the comparative performance of various sunflower hybrids as influenced by various levels of nitrogen (N) fertilizer under different agro-environments. The experimental treatments consisted of three sunflower hybrids (Hysun33, Hysun38, and Pioneer-64A93) and five levels of N fertilizer (0, 60, 120, 180, 240 kg N ha?1), arranged in a randomized complete block design in a split plot with four replications. The field trials were conducted for two consecutive crop seasons under three different agro-ecologies (arid, semi-arid, and sub-humid) in the province of Punjab, Pakistan. The results of the study demonstrated that the productivity of sunflower hybrids varied greatly in response to N fertilization and different ecologies. Maximum achene yield of 3177 kg ha?1 was harvested under sub-humid environment, followed by the semi-arid one. Among the hybrids, Hysun38 excelled the other two hybrids with a production of 3083 kg ha?1 and 41% oil contents. Generally, the productivity of hybrids increased with the increasing doses of N fertilizer. Maximum achene yield was obtained by addition of 180 kg N ha?1. The findings of the study revealed that yield potential of Hysun-38 could be exploited by addition of N fertilizer at the rate of 180 kg N ha?1 under sub-humid environment.  相似文献

Performance under sub-optimal nitrogen (N) conditions, of early maturing maize cultivars bred for tolerance to drought and Striga parasitism in the Nigerian savanna is not known. This study evaluated the tolerance of selected early maturing drought and Striga-tolerant maize cultivars to low N conditions in Northern Nigeria. The cultivars were evaluated at 30 and 100 kg N ha?1. The varieties were compared with an improved maize cultivar that is not tolerant to drought and Striga. Maize grain yield was 26% higher at 100 kg N ha?1 than at 30 kg N ha?1 in 2010 and 161% higher100 kg Nha?1 than at 30 kg Nha?1 in 2011. The drought and Striga-tolerant varieties produced consistently higher yields than the non-drought-tolerant variety particularly at 30 kg Nha?1. These cultivars also accumulated higher amount of N, had higher N-uptake efficiency or N-utilization efficiency than the non-drought-tolerant variety ACR 95 TZE-COMP4 C3. Grains yield at low nitrogen rate was associated with high ears m?2, high dry matter accumulation, high grains m?2, suggesting that these traits are linked to low-N tolerance. The good performance of the drought-tolerant maize varieties under low N suggests that varieties developed for drought tolerance may be tolerant to low-N conditions.  相似文献

The growth and yield performance of green maize (Zea mays), followed by a late-season vegetable cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), was assessed with two rates of three different types of organic-based fertilizers (OBFs) fortified with an inorganic nutrient source. There was also an inorganic fertilizer treatment of NPK 20–10–10 applied at 300 kg ha?1 and a no-fertilizer control treatment. Maize growth was affected by fertilizer type and rate. Organic fertilizer, applied at 5 t ha?1, 3 weeks before maize released enough nutrients to have comparable growth as inorganic fertilizer. Applying the OBF at 2.5 t ha?1 was inadequate to give comparable growth. Application of fortified OBF with total nitrogen content higher than 2.4% N at 5.0 t ha?1 gave maize grain yields comparable with NPK fertilizer. Cowpea yields following early-season maize were highest with DPW + NPK. They were significantly lower with 2.5 t ha?1 of the OBFs. Application of the IAR&T-OBF (OBF made by Institute of Agricultural Research and Training) and decomposed poultry waste (DPW) + NPK at 5.0 t ha?1 gave comparable seed yields significantly higher than OYO-OBF (OBF made by Oyo State Government of Nigeria). NPK fertilizer application supported early-season maize cultivation, but it was not adequate to support the following cowpea. OBF should have nitrogen content up to 2.4% and applied at 5.0 t ha?1 to support an early-season maize cultivation with a late-season cowpea.  相似文献

A field investigation was conducted at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute's Research Farm during the kharif (wet) seasons of 2002 and 2003 in a split plot design with three replications, consisting of 27 treatments, namely, main plots: three varieties (PRH-10, Pusa Sugandh-3 and Pusa Basmati-1) and three plant spacings (20 × 10, 20 × 15 and 20 × 20 cm2) and sub-plots: three levels of nitrogen (0, 80 and 160 kg N ha?1). The research results indicated that aromatic rice hybrid PRH-10 produced 33 and 6%, respectively, more grain yield than that of Pusa Sugandh-3 and Pusa Basmati-1. The appreciable higher grain yield of PRH-10 over Pusa Sugandh-3 and Pusa Basmati-1 was due to considerable improvement in most of the yield attributing characters. Application of 160 kg N ha?1 recorded 23.7 and 26.1% more grain yield over no nitrogen application whereas it was 6.4 and 6.1% more over 80 kg N ha?1, respectively, during first and second year of the experimentation. Wider plant spacing of 20 × 20 cm2 and application of 160 kg N/ha recorded significantly higher hulling, milling and head rice recovery compared to closer spacing and zero nitrogen application.  相似文献
