Humus material from an old stand of Scots pine and from an open area clearcut 13–15 years ago was incubated in the laboratory. The incubations were started in different years and the differences in nematode faunal development between the years were compared with site characteristics. In all incubations there was an increase in total nematode abundance. The total number and diversity of nematodes were higher in humus from the forest than from the clearing. The results indicated that biotic control mechanisms were much weaker in the humus from the clearcut area, where a strong dominance of Acrobeloides nanus occurred in most incubations. The differences in faunal development between years were rather large. A certain pattern of unpredictability indicated that the nematode fauna was a rather labile component of the community of soil organisms in a pine forest soil.

We evaluated the response of riparian forest soil nematode community structure to the physico-chemical environment associated with urban land use. Soils were sampled seasonally between December 2000 and October 2002 along an urban—rural transect in Asheville, North Carolina. We characterized the taxonomic (to genus) and functional composition (trophic groups) of the nematode community of forest soils, as well as several nematode ecological indicators (maturity index, channel index, weighted faunal index). The diversity of nematode genera was not affected by urban land use. However, there tended to be functional differences in the nematode communities along the land use gradient. The urban soils tended to have lower abundances of predatory and omnivorous nematodes. Differences in channel index scores indicated that there was less fungal dominance in the soil food webs of the urban soils. Our results indicate that the functional composition of the soil food web is an important component of soil biodiversity that can be affected by land use practices. This study was conducted in a relatively small city; hence the influence of pollutants on the soil environment was not as great as in larger cities. Correspondingly, the impact on the soil nematode community was not very severe. The utilization of the nematode community assemblage as an indicator of soil conditions should be further explored in urban places of differing magnitudes of environmental effects.

Trees have a key role in determining the composition of soil biota via both above and belowground resource-based mechanisms, and by altering abiotic conditions. We conducted an outdoor mesocosm experiment to investigate the relative impact of above and belowground tree inputs on soil nematode trophic composition, and examine whether tree-driven impacts differed between contrasting species (birch and pine). For both species, we created a factorial design of litter addition and root presence treatments. The litter addition treatment was equivalent to natural levels of litterfall; tree saplings were planted in mesocosms for the root presence treatment and an unplanted control treatment was established that had no litter or root inputs. Litter addition had a limited impact on soil nematode community composition: it primarily decreased omnivore and predatory nematode abundance in birch but had few other effects on the nematode community. By contrast, root presence markedly altered nematode community composition through changes in a range of trophic groups. For both birch and pine, there were significant increases in total, fungivore and predatory nematode abundance in root presence treatments, and furthermore, total and fungivore abundances were positively related to root biomass. Root presence of these contrasting tree species also had a distinctive impact on some specific nematode trophic groups; pine roots promoted bacterivore abundance while birch roots promoted root-hair feeding nematode abundance. These findings suggest strong bottom-up effects of belowground tree inputs, and indicate that particular components of the nematode community may be affected differently by resource quantity and quality. Consequently, we suggest that, in the short-term, belowground rather than aboveground tree inputs have a strong impact on soil food web structure and complexity.

Biological soil crusts are key mediators of carbon and nitrogen inputs for arid land soils and often represent a dominant portion of the soil surface cover in arid lands. Free-living soil nematode communities reflect their environment and have been used as biological indicators of soil condition. In this study, we test the hypothesis that nematode communities are successionally more mature beneath well-developed, late-successional stage crusts than immature, early-successional stage crusts. We identified and enumerated nematodes by genus from beneath early- and late-stage crusts from both the Colorado Plateau, Utah (cool, winter rain desert) and Chihuahuan Desert, New Mexico (hot, summer rain desert) at 0–10 and 10–30 cm depths. As hypothesized, nematode abundance, richness, diversity, and successional maturity were greater beneath well-developed crusts than immature crusts. The mechanism of this aboveground–belowground link between biological soil crusts and nematode community composition is likely the increased food, habitat, nutrient inputs, moisture retention, and/or environmental stability provided by late-successional crusts. Canonical correspondence analysis of nematode genera demonstrated that nematode community composition differed greatly between geographic locations that contrast in temperature, precipitation, and soil texture. We found unique assemblages of genera among combinations of location and crust type that reveal a gap in scientific knowledge regarding empirically derived characterization of dominant nematode genera in deserts soils and their functional role in a crust-associated food web.

BackgroundSaffron cultivation is vital in the Taliouine-Taznakht regions, but the influence of agricultural practices on soil nematode communities, critical for soil health and plant productivity, is not well understood. This study characterizes nematode communities in saffron fields of the Taliouine-Taznakht regions, assessing the impact of various agricultural practices on these communities, with a focus on their diversity, functional roles, and potential as bio-indicators of soil health.A total of 163 soil samples were collected from saffron fields in Taliouine-Taznakht. Nematode communities were identified, quantified, and their functional diversity analyzed. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to visualize relationships between nematode communities and sampling sites. Co-inertia analysis assessed the impact of agricultural practices on nematode diversity. The nematode communities were diverse and varied across regions. PCA identified unique nematode community compositions in different saffron fields. Omnivorous nematodes were strongly linked with Taouyalte (TA), and herbivorous ones were prevalent at Agadir Melloul (AM) and Sidi Hssaine (SH). Modern crop types, high-frequency irrigation, and alfalfa-barley rotation were positively correlated with predator nematode abundance, potentially controlling plant parasitic nematodes and encouraging nutrient cycling. Conversely, monocropping, traditional irrigation, and long plantation age correlated with reduced structure and maturity indices, suggesting a less stable ecosystem. This study unveils the intricate relationships between nematode communities in Taliouine-Taznakht saffron fields and agricultural practices. Findings indicate that specific practices, such as crop rotation and modern irrigation techniques, can foster beneficial nematode groups that improve soil health and potentially regulate harmful plant parasitic nematodes. This knowledge is crucial for crafting sustainable and effective saffron cultivation strategies.

Afforestation and deforestation are key land-use changes across the world, and are considered to be dominant factors controlling ecosystem functioning and biodiversity. However, the responses of soil microbial communities to these land-use changes are not well understood. Because changes in soil microbial abundance and community structure have consequences for nutrient cycling, C-sequestration and long-term sustainability, we investigated impacts of land-use change, age of stand and soil physico-chemical properties on fungal and bacterial communities and their metabolic activities. This study was carried out at four sites in two geographical locations that were afforested on long-established pastures with Pinus radiata D. Don (pine). Two of the sites were on volcanic soils and two on non-volcanic soils and stand age ranged from 5 to 20 y. Microbial communities were analysed by biochemical (phospho-lipid fatty acids; PLFA) and molecular (multiplex-terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism; M-TRFLP) approaches. Both site and stand age influenced microbial properties, with changes being least detectable in the 5-y-old stand. Land use was a key factor influencing soil metabolic activities as measured by physiological profiling using MicroResp. Pasture soils had higher microbial biomass (P < 0.001), and metabolic activities (P < 0.001), and basal respiration rates were up to 2.8-times higher than in the pine soils. Microbial abundance analysis by PLFA showed that the fungal to bacterial ratio was higher in the pine soils (P < 0.01). Community analysis suggested that soil bacterial communities were more responsive to site (principal component 1; P < 0.001) than to land use (principal component 5; P < 0.001). In contrast, the fungal community was more affected by land-use change (principal component 1; P < 0.001) than by site, although site still had some influence on fungal community structure (principal component 2; P < 0.001). Redundancy analysis also suggested that bacterial and fungal communities responded differently to various soil abiotic properties, land-use change and location of sites. Overall, our results indicate that the change in land use from pasture to P. radiata stands had a direct impact on soil fungal communities but an indirect effect, through its effects on soil abiotic properties, on bacterial communities. Most of the changes in bacterial communities could be explained by altered soil physico-chemical properties associated with afforestation of pastures.

The effect of land use changes on the composition of nematode communities has been well documented, however, the applicability of such studies limited to areas with relatively uniform soil and environmental conditions. To determine whether the historical difference in vegetation types affects soil nematode communities during the land use change processes, we carried out a study along two transects where contrasting natural vegetation types (grass versus shrub) were replaced by tea monocultures. Soil nematode communities were compared between two transects at three chronosequence stages: natural vegetations, 3–7 years old tea plantations. Nematode abundance, generic richness, diversity, and proportions of bacterivores and fungivores were higher at each stage of GT transect (from grassland to tea plantation) than at the equivalent stage of ST transect (from shrubland to tea plantation), whereas lower values of maturity index and nematode channel ratio occurred at each stage of GT transect relative to ST transect. MDS ordination analyses, SIMPER analyses and βw indices indicated that the difference in nematode community structure was greatest between the two 3-year-old tea plantations, although the greatest difference in environmental conditions was observed between two original vegetation habitats. This suggested that the original vegetation types may affect the following nematode community development; however, the effects can decrease over time. Different trophic groups responded to land use in different ways along the vegetational development. This supports the viewpoint that the addition of a common resource can evoke disparate responses from individual food-web components.

Changes in soil nematode communities under the impact of fertilizers
Changes taking place in the communities of soil nematodes of an artificially sown meadow under the impact of annually applied mineral fertilizers have been studied in a field experiment for nine years. It is shown that changes in the species composition, trophic structure, and numbers of nematodes from different genera depend on the fertilizer applied and on the competitiveness of the plant species grown. The spectra of nematode genera sensitive to the complete mineral fertilizer (NPK) and to the particular nutrients have been identified with the use of a number of parameters, including the maturity index of nematode communities, the biotope preferences of the particular nematode genera, and the general pattern of nematode habitats. The results obtained in this study can be used to assess the effect of mineral fertilizers on the soil fauna and to suggest optimum application rates of mineral fertilizers ensuring the sustainable development of meadow herbs. The use of the data on the trophic structure of nematode communities for predicting the ways of organic matter decomposition in the soil is discussed.

In an afforested coal mining site at Berzdorf, Germany, the soil nematode community was investigated on the basis of genera distribution, trophic structure, and functional guilds. To assess food web complexity and nutritional status of afforested mine soils, the “weighted faunal analysis” was applied and found to be a useful diagnostic tool to describe the poorly developed, basal or matured food web characters of the Berzdorf mine soils. The tree species used in afforestation was a crucial factor. A comparison between nine mine soils of different age (4–46 years) and afforestation (poplar, alder, pine, mixed deciduous, mixed coniferous) showed particularly poorly structured food webs in poplar afforestations, whilst alder and mixed deciduous sites presented more favourable conditions in terms of soil succession and food web maturity. The results revealed no continuous increase in the complexity of food web interactions from younger successional stages to older stages. However, it was demonstrated that food web development at Berzdorf followed distinct shifts in soil primary succession. Correspondences of nematode community data and environmental parameters are discussed.

Although the slopes of size spectra (plots of abundance on organism size) have been widely used to assess aquatic and terrestrial communities, size spectra have not been used to assess soil nematode communities. Two forms of size spectra (one based on the average biomass of nematode genera and another based on the average biomass of nematode size classes were used to assess the soil nematode communities in managed forage land and cropland, and in naturally developed grass-shrubland and secondary forests in a karst peak-cluster depression area. R2 values were larger for size spectra based on nematode size classes than on genera. The slopes of the size spectra for total nematodes were more negative in forage land and cropland than in grass-shrubland and secondary forests, which was consistent with disturbance of the soil nematode community by agricultural management. The results suggest that size spectra analysis is applicable to soil nematodes; they can reveal different land use types and may reveal the degree to which the soil nematodes in particular and the soil community in general have been disturbed. Size spectra may be more useful if based on nematode size classes rather than on genera.

Timber harvesting influences both above and belowground ecosystem nutrient dynamics. Impact of timber harvesting on soil organic matter (SOM) mineralization and microbial community structure was evaluated in two coniferous forest species, ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta). Management of ponderosa pine forests, particularly even-aged stand practices, increased the loss of CO2-C and hence reduced SOM storage potential. Changes in soil microbial community structure were more pronounced in ponderosa pine uneven-aged and heavy harvest stands and in lodgepole pine even-aged stand as compared to their respective unmanaged stands. Harvesting of trees had a negative impact on SOM mineralization and soil microbial community structure in both coniferous forests, potentially reducing coniferous forest C storage potential.

Bacterial communities associated with the plant-parasitic nematode Meloidogyne fallax egg masses were compared with those present in the rhizoplane. Two agricultural soils with different nematode population dynamics were used in a glasshouse study, with either potato or tomato as host plant for the nematode. DNA fingerprints and bacterial community level physiological profiles (CLPP) were studied using PCR-DGGE of 16S rRNA genes and Biolog Eco MicroPlates. CLPP and DNA fingerprinting both showed differences between egg mass and rhizoplane bacterial communities. PCR-DGGE showed some bands specific to the egg mass samples. These bands were present in egg masses from both soils. This study shows that egg masses of M. fallax have a distinct bacterial community from that of the adjacent rhizoplane. Soil and host plant factors interactively influence the bacterial egg mass community. Differences in nematode population dynamics between the sample sites cannot be clearly related to the observed differences in the egg mass microbial communities.

Effects of fungivorous and predatory soil arthropods on free-living nematodes and tardigrades were studied in a factorial microcosm experiment. A stepwise increase in faunal complexity was obtained by adding soil arthropods to defaunated humus samples from an irrigated+fertilized and an untreated stand of Scots pine. The effects were assessed after 103 and 201 days at 15°C and a soil moisture content of 50% water-holding capacity. The study showed that a diverse community of fungivorous arthropods (collembola and oribatid mites), present in numbers similar to those in the field, reduced the abundance of nematodes. A complete community of fungivorous and predatory arthropods (e.g., gamasides, spiders, and cantharid larvae) further strengthened this repressive effect. Certain nematode genera were more affected than others. Tardigrades seemed to be efficient predators on nematodes, but their numbers were, in turn, strongly reduced by predatory arthropods. Because predatory arthropods fed on both nematodes and their tardigrade predators, the impact of arthropod predators on nematode regulation was greater than it appeared to be on the basis of nematode numbers. Humus type also interacted with the other factors. Nematode numbers were initially higher in the untreated humus than in the irrigated+fertilized humus. However, because tardigrade populations increased only in the untreated humus, nematode numbers decreased more in this humus than in the irrigated+fertilized humus. The study demonstrates that nematode abundance can be regulated by a number of types of interacting predators.

Soil nematode communities were investigated at eight semi-natural steppe grasslands in the National Park Seewinkel, eastern Austria. Four sites were moderately grazed by horses, cattle and donkeys, four were ungrazed. Nematodes were sampled on four occasions from mineral soil, and their total abundance, diversity of genera, trophic structure and functional guilds were determined. Altogether 58 nematode genera inhabited the grasslands, with Acrobeloides, Anaplectus, Heterocephalobus, Prismatolaimus, Aphelenchoides, Aphelenchus, Tylenchus and Pratylenchus dominating. Mean total abundance at sites was 185–590 individuals per 100 g soil. Diversity indices did not separate communities well, but cluster analysis showed distinct site effects on nematode generic structure. Within feeding groups the relative proportion of bacterial-feeding nematodes was the highest, followed by the fungal- and plant-feeding group. Omnivores and predators occurred in low abundance. The maturity indices and plant parasite indices were characteristic for temperate grasslands, but the abundance of early colonizers (c-p 1 nematodes) was low. A high density of fungal-feeding c-p 2 families (Aphelenchoidae, Aphelenchoididae) resulted in remarkably high channel index values, suggesting that decomposition pathways are driven by fungi. Nematode community indices of all sites pointed towards a structured, non-enriched soil food web. At most sites, grazing showed little or no effect on nematode community parameters, but total abundance was higher at ungrazed areas. Significant differences in the percentage of omnivorous nematodes, the sum of the maturity index, the number of genera and Simpson's index of diversity were found at one long-term grazed pasture, and this site was also separated by multi-dimensional scaling (MDS).

The impact of exotic plant invasions on soil communities and nutrient cycling processes has received an increasing attention in recent years. To test whether the exotic plant invasions affect nematode communities through altering litter quality, we compared mass loss and nematode colonization during the stem litter decomposition of invasive Spartina alterniflora and native Phragmites australis in salt marshes of the Yangtze River estuary, China. Plastic drinking straws were synchronously used as controls. The addition of plant residues was found stimulating the growth of nematodes, particularly bacterial feeders on day 16 after burial. A top-down control of bacterivous nematodes by carnivores existed in nematode succession during the litter decomposition. With higher nitrogen content and lower C:N ratio, stem litter of the invasive S. alterniflora decayed faster and supported more abundant nematodes than the native P. australis. The greater nematode abundance in S. alterniflora was mainly due to two dominant genera of bacterial nematodes, namely Diplolaimelloides and Diplolaimella. Lower values of maturity index and structure index in S. alterniflora than in P. australis litter indicate that a more degraded food web condition resulted from the faster litter decay. A considerable difference in nematode community structures between two litter types only occurred in a certain period of the decomposition (from 8 to 32 days after burial), suggesting that the changes in faunal community structure are time dependent. In summary, this study confirmed the hypothesis that the invasion of S. alterniflora stimulates the growth of bacterial nematodes by producing higher quality of litter than the native P. australis. The results obtained here suggest that the invasion of exotic plant is likely to alter ecosystem functions indirectly through exerting its effect on soil decomposer communities such as nematodes.
