In cultured juvenile Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis), reducing the mass deaths caused by collision or contact with tank or net walls at night is a priority for seedling production. Pacific bluefin tuna is a visually dependant species, although its scotopic vision is poor. We recorded electroretinograms to investigate the visual function with growth in the dark-adapted eyes of juvenile Pacific bluefin tuna. Peak wavelengths of spectral sensitivity [38–62 days posthatch (dph), 77–167 mm standard length (SL)] were observed between 474 and 494 nm. Visual light sensitivity has a tendency to increase slightly with growth at 28–64 dph in individuals that measured 29–175 mm SL. However, visual temporal resolution did not significantly increase with growth at 38–62 days dph in individuals that measured 77–167 mm SL. These results suggest that the mass death continues between 28 and 64 dph because of low visual function and increasing swimming speed with growth.  相似文献

In the present study, we assessed small fishes as potential feed fishes with the lowest mercury levels. The mercury levels of four small pelagic fishes and a benthic fish from the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan, i.e., spotted chub mackerel Scomber australasicus, chub mackerel Scomber japonicus, horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus, round scad Decapterus punctatus, and bastard halibut Paralichthys olivaceus, were determined. Total mercury levels in fish muscle were measured using a reduction vaporizing atomic absorption method. There were no significant correlations between body weight and mercury levels for these species. However, significant differences were observed in the mercury levels of these species between the two catch locations, with fish caught in the Pacific Ocean having higher mercury levels. This difference may be due to the Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly seismically and volcanically active zone, which is located in the Pacific Ocean. Preference for these fishes for use in aquaculture should refer to the area where they are caught in addition to the species.  相似文献

To characterize the 22:6 n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid, DHA) levels of the oriental bonito Sarda orientalis, a coastal migratory tuna species, total lipids (TL) of white muscle, dark muscle, liver, pyloric cecum, gonad, and other viscera were separated into lipid classes, the constituents of TL were quantified, and the fatty acid composition of TL, triacylglycerols (TAG), phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylcholine was analyzed. The crude lipid contents of muscle and other organs were 0.8–3.2% and 2.3–9.1%, respectively. DHA was found in TL of various organs at levels ranging from 19.2% to 27.6% in muscle and 16.3% to 28.5% in other organs. The levels of DHA in muscle TAG (8.2–16.0%) were lower than or comparable to those in visceral TAG (6.9–24.0%). These findings did not coincide with those observed in active-migratory tuna species, which accumulate DHA in their muscle TAG during migration. These findings suggest that the DHA distribution of S. orientalis is different from that observed in active-migratory tuna species, and that the differences may be due to migration type of the fish.  相似文献

We developed a simple dry shipper method for cryopreserving the sperm of Scombridae fish in outdoor environments. First, we undertook a preliminary study to optimize the sperm cryopreservation conditions using bullet tuna, Auxis rochei (Risso, 1810) sperm. We found that the optimum cryomedium contained 90% foetal bovine serum (FBS) or 300 mM trehalose as an external cryoprotectant and 10% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as an internal cryoprotectant. Under these optimized conditions, the post‐thaw sperm had a duration of motility of 500 s and a motility rate of >70%. We then performed practical trials of the optimized protocol in various outdoor environments (e.g., fishing boats and ports) using the sperm of five Scombridae species: chub mackerel, Scomber japonicus (Houttuyn, 1782); blue mackerel, S. australasicus (Cuvier, 1832); skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis (Linnaeus, 1758); longtail tuna Thunnus tonggol, (Bleeker, 1851) and Pacific bluefin tuna, T. orientalis (Temminck & Schlegel, 1844). The post‐thaw sperm of all five of these species had a duration of motility of 650 s and a motility rate of >70%, indicating that this simple method can be used to obtain high‐quality cryopreserved sperm of various Scombridae species in outdoor environments.  相似文献

Information on the distributions of demersal and benthic fishes is fundamental for stock assessment and management. Spatiotemporal changes in the distribution patterns of five pleuronectid species (flathead flounder Hippoglossoides dubius, Kamchatka flounder Atheresthes evermanni, roughscale sole Clidoderma asperrimum, slime flounder Microstomus achne, and Korean flounder Glyptocephalus stelleri) off the Pacific coast of northern Honshu, Japan, at depths of 150–900 m, were examined using a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). Densities of flathead and Korean flounder were highest in the southernmost area, where the fish were small. The body lengths of both of these species increased from 2003 to 2008, suggesting that an abundant year class was recruited in 2003. The density of Kamchatka flounder was highest in the northern area. In roughscale sole and slime flounder, there were no distinctive annual and latitudinal trends in the density distributions. The density distribution of Korean flounder was bimodal; the peaks were at depths of 210 and 410 m. The body length increased as the depth increased from 150 to 410 m, and then decreased from 410 to 550 m. Moreover, “bigger–deeper” trends were observed in flathead, Kamchatka and slime flounder.  相似文献

Thyroid hormone concentrations in unfertilized eggs of 26 species of various freshwater, marine and diadromous teleosts were examined, together with changes in their concentrations during egg development in some species. Significant quantities of both thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) were found in eggs of all species examined. Mean T4 and T3 concentrations in eggs varied from 0.04 (marbled sole) to 15.00 ng/g (chum salmon), and from 0.07 (goldfish) to 9.95 ng/g (Pacific herring), respectively. T4 concentrations were significantly greater than T3 concentrations in eggs of most freshwater fishes, whereas T3 concentrations were greater in seawater fishes. During the course of development, thyroid hormones in eggs decreased markedly before hatching. These findings suggest that thyroid hormones are consistently present in teleost eggs, and thus may play an important role in the egg development.  相似文献

To characterize post-mortem changes in fish meat quality during chilled and frozen storage, muscle toughness and the connective tissue structure of muscle were compared between two mackerel species, spotted mackerel Scomber australasicus and Pacific mackerel S. japonicus. Measurement of the breaking strength of meat slices from both non-frozen fresh fish and frozen-thawed fish revealed that spotted mackerel meat was softer than Pacific mackerel meat. Under scanning electron microscopic observation, the connective tissue of non-frozen meat of spotted mackerel was thinner than that of Pacific mackerel. In addition, the collagen content in the spotted mackerel meat was lower than that of Pacific mackerel. These findings suggest that connective tissue structure might influence muscle toughness in mackerel.  相似文献

Thaw-rigor is often found in frozen meat of bigeye tuna Thunnus obesus. Excessive amounts of drip loss and stiffness greatly lower the commercial value of tuna meat. In order to prevent thaw-rigor in meat stored at −60°C post-capture, we adapted a temperature shift technique that stores the meat at −7°C for 1 day or −10°C for 7 days before thawing. Biochemical changes in muscle of bigeye tuna before and after the temperature shift to −7 or −10°C were characterized. Contents of ATP, NAD+, glycogen, and creatine phosphate decreased after the temperature shift. NAD+ levels decreased faster than ATP levels and were highly correlated with the rigor index. Thaw-rigor occurred in muscle containing NAD+ at 1 μmol/g and ATP at 7 μmol/g. On the other hand, the meat color of tuna during frozen storage changed to brown depending on the storage temperature and reflected the rate of metmyoglobin (met-Mb) formation. Met-Mb formation increase was dependent on the decrease in NADH levels during the frozen storage. A temperature shift technique with storage at −7°C for 1 day or −10°C for 7 days before thawing prevented thaw-rigor and met-Mb formation.  相似文献

Replacement of fish meal (FM) with rice protein concentrate (RPC) as a practical diet for the Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, was evaluated. Five isonitrogenous (36.6% protein) diets, formulated by replacing 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% of FM by RPC, were fed to shrimp (initial weight of 6.99 ± 0.08 g) five times daily to satiation for 60 days. Relatively high final weight (FW 17.64–18.25 g) and weight gain (WG 10.81–11.39 g) were obtained in treatments up to 50% of the plant protein inclusion. Above this inclusion level, FW (14.93–14.35 g) and WG (7.68–7.23 g) were reduced. Survival was high (≥95%) and similar for all diets. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in tail-muscle composition (moisture, protein, lipid, and ash) among different dietary treatments. Dispensable and indispensable amino acids of the tail muscle of shrimp fed with 25, 50, and 75% RPC were significantly higher than the FM (0%) and 100% RPC diets. A decreasing trend in apparent digestibility coefficient (excluding dry matter) for crude protein (90.52–52.41), ether extract (94.11–80.03), organic matter (87.25–50.16), and gross energy (89.41–55.24) was observed at higher RPC inclusion rates. The results suggest that RPC meal can be a potential candidate for FM replacement up to 50% of the protein in shrimp diets.  相似文献

This study reports on the horizontal movements of swordfish (Xiphias gladius L.) tagged during deep‐set fishery trials off the California coastline. Position estimates from several electronic tag types were used to better understand swordfish stock structure and regional affiliation with current boundary hypotheses used to manage swordfish in the eastern north Pacific. Swordfish were outfitted with (a) satellite‐linked mark–recapture tags (n = 66), (b) electronic data storage tags that were recaptured (n = 16), (c) fin‐mounted Argos transmitters (n = 6), and (d) satellite‐linked archival tags (n = 4). Twenty‐six percent of tagged swordfish reported close to (<225 km) their deployment location within the southern California Bight (SCB). Of the 50 swordfish that moved outside the SCB, 76% exhibited affiliation to the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO) management unit, 20% moved into the Western and Central North Pacific (WCNP) and 4% spent time within both the EPO and WCNP boundaries. Mean displacement between deployment and reporting locations was 1,250 ± 1,375 km, with daily rates of movement up to 55 km/day. Seasonal migrations ranged from the equator (0.8°N.132.4°W) to the Hawaiian Islands (17.0°N/154.2°W), with multiple individuals returning to the initial tagging locations the subsequent season. Seasonal site fidelity exhibited by several individuals highlights the importance of the SCB foraging grounds. While no evidence of trans‐equatorial or trans‐Pacific crossing was documented, extensive movements validate the highly migratory nature of California swordfish and support the need for future inclusion of spatial distribution data in management. Findings suggest that SCB swordfish may exhibit a higher level of EPO connectivity than previously proposed.  相似文献

Decadal changes in northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) diet were examined based on the stomach contents data collected off the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan from January to April, 1953–1988. Seventeen families of fish and seven families of squid were identified from the stomach contents. Dominant prey species in terms of percentage of occurrence and wet weight were Japanese sardine (Sardinops melanostictus), chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus), and myctophid fishes. Demersal fishes, sparkling enope squid (Watasenia scintillans), and oceanic squids were also preyed on at low incidences. Decadal‐scale diet composition of northern fur seals revealed shifts in the significance of Japanese sardine and chub mackerel in parallel with the decadal alternation in the dominance of these species within the pelagic fish community off the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan. These results suggest that northern fur seals can use a variety of prey resources in this wintering area by switching the diet according to the distribution and abundance of prey species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   The distribution of mercury in the muscle and other tissues was determined in 23 species of fishes and invertebrates. This study reveals species-specific patterns of mercury accumulation in the muscle of tuna and alfonsino. Consistently high levels of total mercury were found in Beryx splendens (0.78 ± 0.56 µg/g), Atlantic Thunnus thynnus (0.42 ± 0.06 µg/g), Pacific T. thynnus (0.59 ± 0.34 µg/g), Thunnus obesus (0.98 ± 0.34 µg/g), Makaira nigricans (0.56 ± 0.05 µg/g), Tetraptrus audax (0.51 ± 0.08 µg/g), and Xiphias gladius (0.47 ± 0.24 µg/g). Other fish species had lower levels of total mercury or methylmercury in muscle than the maximum permitted level of mercury in fish in Japan (0.4 µg/g). Total mercury and methylmercury levels in the muscles of T. thynnus , T. obesus, and B. splendens were closely correlated with body weight.  相似文献

The diet of juvenile (predominantly age 1) southern bluefin tuna Thunnus maccoyii (SBT, N = 720), caught over 11 years of the recruitment monitoring survey off southern Western Australia during summer, consisted overwhelmingly of teleosts (97.4% by volume). Pilchard Sardinops sagax (27.4%V), blue mackerel Scomber australasicus (16.7%V), and jack mackerel Trachurus declivis (14.2%V) were the major taxa, with pilchard more abundant in coastal waters and jack mackerel more frequently encountered in fish caught closer to the shelf-edge. Prey size varied from 5 to 240 mm, with 67% of ingested items measuring between 30 and 50 mm. Pilchard dominated the prey size category 130–190 mm (84% by number), but the overall contribution of this species to the diet of juvenile SBT was much lower than previously reported. Future research in relation to the feeding ecology of juvenile SBT should focus on the biology and ecology of the young lifestages of the main prey species in this area and on prey distribution and dynamics as a key factor linking environmental change and SBT distribution.  相似文献

To analyze the effects of mesoscale eddies, sea surface temperature (SST), and gear configuration on the catch of Atlantic bluefin (Thunnus thynnus), yellowfin (Thunnus albacares), and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the U.S. northwest Atlantic longline fishery, we constructed multivariate statistical models relating these variables to the catch of the four species in 62 121 longline hauls made between 1993 and 2005. During the same 13‐year period, 103 anticyclonic eddies and 269 cyclonic eddies were detected by our algorithm in the region 30–55°N, 30–80°W. Our results show that tuna and swordfish catches were associated with different eddy structures. Bluefin tuna catch was highest in anticyclonic eddies whereas yellowfin and bigeye tuna catches were highest in cyclonic eddies. Swordfish catch was found preferentially in regions outside of eddies. Our study confirms that the common practice of targeting tuna with day sets and swordfish with night sets is effective. In addition, bluefin tuna and swordfish catches responded to most of the variables we tested in the opposite directions. Bluefin tuna catch was negatively correlated with longitude and the number of light sticks used whereas swordfish catch was positively correlated with these two variables. We argue that overfishing of bluefin tuna can be alleviated and that swordfish can be targeted more efficiently by avoiding fishing in anticyclonic eddies and in near‐shore waters and using more light sticks and fishing at night in our study area, although further studies are needed to propose a solid oceanography‐based management plan for catch selection.  相似文献

Potential microbial extracellular leucine-aminopeptidase (LAP) and β-glucosidase (βGlc) activity in the sediments of a red sea-bream (Pagrus major) aquaculture area were measured. Temporal variations in these enzymatic activities were low and stable from December 1999 to April 2000. They rose but fluctuated widely from May to November 2000. LAP activity in the sediments ranged from 334 to 4461 nmol/g per h in the 0–1-cm layer and from 106 to 258 nmol/g per h in the 4–5-cm layer. βGlc activity ranged from 221 to 4121 nmol/g per h in the 0–1-cm layer and from 18 to 238 nmol/g per h in the 4–5-cm layer. These values were higher than others reported and the organic matter load from the fish farms appeared to promote these enzymatic activities, although the relationship was not linear. The ratio of LAP to βGlc was smaller than other reported values in marine sediments or in water samples from the same aquaculture area, suggesting that not only quantitatively but qualitatively an aspect of organic matter degradation in the sediment might be changed by the heavy supply of organic materials from fish farms.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   The glass transition behavior of processed fish muscles (bonito, tuna, mackerel, sea bream, cod) and its muscle protein fractions (sarcoplasmic and myofibrillar proteins) were studied using differential scanning calorimetry. Each dried processed fish muscle and the extracted protein fractions showed clear glass transition phenomenon. The T g values of muscles and myofibrillar proteins from red muscle fishes tended to be lower than those from white muscle fishes though there was no difference on T g of sarcoplasmic proteins. The T g value of whole muscle was considerably lower than that of extracted protein fractions because of the plasticizing effects of low molecular weight materials contained in the muscle.  相似文献

The suitability of various under-utilized fish species as starting material for the production of a miso-like fermented product was studied. To the end, four under-utilized fishes and shellfishes—spotted mackerel, lizard fish, horse mackerel, and common squid—were fermented, under either washed or unwashed conditions, with malt-rice (kome-koji) as a starter, and their quality parameters assessed. The protein content of the fermented fish pastes (18.1–22.4%) was superior to that of fermented soy paste (12.9%). Our analyses of other physico-chemical parameters of the finished products, including free amino acid, oligopeptide, organic acid, and mineral content, also revealed the potential utility of both washed and unwashed fish meat for the production of miso-like fermented fish pastes. Sensory evaluation revealed the potential of the washing step to produce a consistent product for large-scale production.  相似文献

As a crucial step in developing a bioenergetics model for Pacific Chub Mackerel Scomber japonicus (hereafter chub mackerel), parameters related to metabolism, the largest dissipation term in bioenergetics modelling, were estimated. Swimming energetics and metabolic data for nine chub mackerel were collected at 14°C, a low temperature within the typical thermal range of this species, using variable‐speed swim‐tunnel respirometry. These new data were combined with previous speed‐dependent metabolic data at 18 and 24°C and single‐speed (1 fork length per second: FL/s) metabolic data at 15 and 20°C to estimate respiration parameters for model development. Based on the combined data, the optimal swimming speed (the swimming speed with the minimum cost of transport, Uopt) was 42.5 cm/s (1.5–3.0 FL/s or 2.1 ± 0.4 FL/s) and showed no significant dependence on temperature or fish size. The daily mass‐specific oxygen consumption rate (R, g O2 g fish?1 day?1) was expressed as a function of fish mass (W), temperature (T) and swimming speed (U): R = 0.0103W?0.490 e(0.0457T) e(0.0235U). Compared to other small pelagic fishes such as Pacific Herring Clupea harengus pallasii, Pacific Sardine Sardinops sagax and various anchovy species, chub mackerel respiration showed a lower dependence on fish mass, temperature and swimming speed, suggesting a greater swimming ability and lower sensitivity to environmental temperature variation.  相似文献
