Excessive nitrogen (N) fertilizer input leads to higher N loss via ammonia (NH3) volatilization. Controlled‐release urea (CRU) was expected to reduce emission losses of N. An incubation and a plant growth experiment with Gossypium hirsutum L. were conducted with urea and CRU (a fertilizer mixture of polymer‐coating sulfur‐coated urea and polymer‐coated urea with N ratios of 5 : 5) under six levels of N fertilization rates, which were 0% (0 mg N kg−1 soil), 50% (110 mg N kg−1 soil), 75% (165 mg N kg−1 soil), 100% (220 mg N kg−1 soil), 125% (275 mg N kg−1 soil), and 150% (330 mg N kg−1 soil) of the recommended N fertilizer rate. For each type of N fertilizer, the NH3 volatilization, cotton yield, and N uptake increased with the rate of N application, while N use efficiency reached a threshold and decreased when N application rates of urea and CRU exceeded 238.7 and 209.3 mg N kg−1 soil, respectively. Ammonia volatilization was reduced by 65–105% with CRU in comparison to urea treatments. The N release characteristic of CRU corresponded well to the N requirements of cotton growth. Soil inorganic N contents, leaf SPAD values, and net photosynthetic rates were increased by CRU application, particularly from the full bloom stage to the initial boll‐opening stage. As a result, CRU treatments achieved significantly higher lint yield by 7–30%, and the N use efficiency of CRU treatments was increased by 25–124% relative to that of urea treatments. These results suggest that the application of CRU could be widely used for cotton production with higher N use efficiency and lower NH3 volatilization.  相似文献

Inhibition of nitrification as a mitigation tool to abate nitrogen (N) losses and improve N use efficiency (NUE) is a promising technology. Nitrification inhibitor (dicyandiamide, DCD) was evaluated in two consecutive wheat-maize rotations (2015–2017), with two different N fertilizer levels applied in wheat (160, 220 kg N ha?1) and maize (180, 280 kg N ha?1). More NH4+-N contents (101% and 102% in wheat and 74% and 73% in maize) and less NO3-N contents (37% and 43% in wheat and 46% and 57% in maize) were observed at both N levels treated with DCD compared to without DCD. Higher pH, lower EC and reduced NO3-N accumulation were the other benefits of DCD. The NO3-N accumulation within the 0–200 cm soil profile was significantly less at both N levels with DCD (66 mg kg?1 and 121 mg kg?1) compared to without DCD (96 mg kg?1 and 169 mg kg?1). Application of DCD also improved the growth and yield in both crops. Increase in NUE from 38% to 49% in wheat and 27% to 33% in maize with DCD at higher N level was also observed. Overall, the effectiveness of DCD in retarding the nitrification process was higher in wheat than maize.  相似文献

Abstract

A sandy soil was amended with various rates (20 – 320 g air-dry weight basis of the amendments per kg of air-dry soil) of chicken manure (CM), sewage sludge (SS), and incinerated sewage sludge (ISS) and incubated for 100 days in a greenhouse at 15% (wt/wt) soil water content. At the beginning of incubation, NH4-N concentrations varied from 50 – 280 mg kg?1 in the CM amended soil with negligible amounts of NO3-N. Subsequently, the concentration of NH4-N decreased while that of NO3-N increased rapidly. In soil amended with SS at 20 – 80 g kg?1 rates, the NO3-N concentration increased sharply during the first 20 days, followed by a slow rate of increase over the rest of the incubation period. However, at a 160 g kg?1 SS rate, there were three distinct phases of NO3-N release which lasted for160 days. In the ISS amended soil, the nitrification process was completed during the initial 30 days, and the concentrations of NH4-N and NO3-N were lower than those for the other treatments. The mineralized N across different rates accounted for 20 – 36%, 16 – 40%, and 26 – 50% of the total N applied as CM, SS, and ISS, respectively.  相似文献

High N fertilizer and flooding irrigation applied to rice in anthropogenic‐alluvial soil often result in N leaching and low use efficiency of applied fertilizer N from the rice field in Ningxia irrigation region in the upper reaches of the Yellow River. Sound N management practices need to be established to improve N use efficiency while sustaining high grain yield levels and minimize fertilizer N loss to the environment. We investigated the effects of Nursery Box Total Fertilization technology (NBTF) on N leaching at different rice growing stages, N use efficiency and rice yield in 2010 and 2011. The four fertilizer N treatments were 300 kg N ha−1 (CU, Conventional treatment of urea at 300 kg N ha−1), 120 kg N ha−1 (NBTF120, NBTF treatment of controlled‐release N fertilizer at 120 kg N ha−1), 80 kgN ha−1 (NBTF80, NBTF treatment of controlled‐release N fertilizer at 80 kg N ha−1) and no N fertilizer application treatment (CK). The results showed that the NBTF120 treatment increased N use efficiency, maintained crop yields and substantially reduced N losses to the environment. Under the CU treatment, the rice yield was 9634 and 7098 kg ha−1, the N use efficiency was 31·6% and 34·8% and the leaching losses of TN were 44·51 and 39·89 kg ha−1; NH4+‐N was 5·26 and 5·49 kg ha−1, and NO3‐N was 27·94 and 26·22 kg ha−1 during the rice whole growing period in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Compared with CU, NBTF120 significantly increased the N use efficiency and decreased the N losses from the paddy field. Under NBTF120, the N use efficiency was 56·3% and 51·4%, which was 24·7% and 16·6% higher than that of CU, and the conventional fertilizer application rate could be reduced by 60% without lowering the rice yield while decreasing the leaching losses of TN by 16·27 and 14·36 kg ha−1, NH4+‐N by 0·90 and 1·84 kg ha−1, NO3‐N by 110·6 and 10·14 kg ha−1 in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Our results indicate that the CU treatment resulted in relatively high N leaching losses, and that alternative practice of NBTF which synchronized fertilizer application with crop demand substantially reduced these losses. We therefore suggest the NBTF120 be a fertilizer application alternative which leads to high food production but low environmental impact. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Abstract

The rate and timing of manure application when used as nitrogen (N) fertilizer depend on N‐releasing capacity (mineralization) of manures. A soil incubation study was undertaken to establish relative potential rates of mineralization of three organic manures to estimate the value of manure as N fertilizer. Surface soil samples of 0–15 cm were collected and amended with cattle manure (CM), sheep manure (SM), and poultry manure (PM) at a rate equivalent to 200 mg N kg?1 soil. Soil without any amendment was used as a check (control). Nitrogen‐release potential of organic manures was determined by measuring changes in total mineral N [ammonium‐N+nitrate‐N (NH4 +–N+NO3 ?–N)], NH4 +–N, and accumulation of NO3 ?–N periodically over 120 days. Results indicated that the control soil (without any amendment) released a maximum of 33 mg N kg?1soil at day 90, a fourfold increase (significant) over initial concentration, indicating that soil had substantial potential for mineralization. Soil with CM, SM, and PM released a maximum of 50, 40, and 52 mg N kg?1 soil, respectively. Addition of organic manures (i.e., CM, SM, and PM) increased net N released by 42, 25, and 43% over the control (average). No significant differences were observed among manures. Net mineralization of organic N was observed for all manures, and the net rates varied between 0.01 and 0.74 mg N kg?1 soil day?1. Net N released, as percent of organic N added, was 9, 10, and 8% for CM, SM, and PM. Four phases of mineralization were observed; initial rapid release phase in 10–20 days followed by slow phase in 30–40 days, a maximum mineralization in 55–90 days, and finally a declined phase in 120 days. Accumulation of NO3 ?–N was 13.2, 10.6, and 14.6 mg kg?1 soil relative to 7.4 mg NO3 ?–N kg?1 in the control soil, indicating that manures accumulated NO3 ?–N almost double than the control. The proportion of total mineral N to NO3 ?–N revealed that a total of 44–61% of mineral N is converted into NO3 ?–N, indicating that nitrifiers were unable to completely oxidize the available NH4 +. The net rates of mineralization were highest during the initial 10–20 days, showing that application of manures 1–2 months before sowing generally practiced in the field may cause a substantial loss of mineralized N. The rates of mineralization and nitrification in the present study indicated that release of inorganic N from the organic pool of manures was very low; therefore, manures have a low N fertilizer effect in our conditions.  相似文献

Land‐use patterns affect the quantity and quality of soil nutrients as well as microbial biomass and respiration in soil. However, few studies have been done to assess the influence of land‐use on soil and microbial characteristics of the alpine region on the northeastern Tibetan plateau. In order to understand the effect of land‐use management, we examined the chemical properties and microbial biomass of soils under three land‐use types including natural grassland, crop‐field (50 + y of biennial cropping and fallow) and abandoned old‐field (10 y) in the area. The results showed that the losses of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) were about 45 and 43 per cent, respectively, due to cultivation for more than 50 y comparing with natural grassland. Because of the abandonment of cultivation for about a decade, SOC and TN were increased by 27 and 23 per cent, respectively, in comparison with the crop field. Microbial carbon (ranging from 357·5 to 761·6 mg kg−1 soil) in the old‐field was intermediate between the crop field and grassland. Microbial nitrogen (ranging from 29·9 to 106·7 mg kg−1 soil) and respiration (ranging from 60·4 to 96·4 mg CO2‐C g−1 Cmic d−1) were not significantly lower in the old‐field than those in the grassland. Thus it could be concluded that cultivation decreased the organic matter and microbial biomass in soils, while the adoption of abandonment has achieved some targets of grassland restoration in the alpine region of Gansu Province on the northeastern Tibetan plateau. Organic amendments, such as bokashi, are applied to the soil to increase the N. However, the available N provided by these fertilizers and the feedstocks with which they are produced have been poorly documented. In this work, the available N in bokashi was evaluated as well as their biological stability and chemical maturity. The treatments bokashi poultry (WVP); bokashi swine (WVS) and bokashi control (WVC) contained wheat straw and vegetable wastes; WVP and WVS also included poultry and swine manure, respectively. The temperature, mineral N, pH, EC, CO2 production rate and germination index (IG) were measured. At the end of the trial, all of the treatments’ temperatures exceeded room temperature. The WVP presented a higher mineral N (1,054 mg kg?1) than the WVS (844 mg kg?1) and the WVC (907 mg kg?1). In all treatments, the NH4+ and NO3? decreased. EC reached phytotoxicity levels in all treatments (EC > 3 dS m?1). None of the treatments showed biological stability or chemical maturity (IG of WVP, WVS and WVC: 10%, 29% and 19%, respectively). Therefore, it is concluded that applying these bokashi to soils could limit crop growth due to phytotoxic effects and immobilization of transient N.  相似文献

Reclamation of disturbed soils is done with the primary objective of restoring the land for agronomic or forestry land use. Reclamation followed by sustainable management can restore the depleted soil organic carbon (SOC) stock over time. This study was designed to assess SOC stocks of reclaimed and undisturbed minesoils under different cropping systems in Dover Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio (40°32·33′ N and 81°33·86′ W). Prior to reclamation, the soil was classified as Bethesda Soil Series (loamy‐skeletal, mixed, acid, mesic Typic Udorthent). The reclaimed and unmined sites were located side by side and were under forage (fescue—Festuca arundinacea Schreb. and alfa grass—Stipa tenacissima L.), and corn (Zea mays L.)—soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) rotation. All fields were chisel plowed annually except unmined forage, and fertilized only when planted to corn. The manure was mostly applied on unmined fields planted to corn, and reclaimed fields planted to forage and corn. The variability in soil properties (i.e., soil bulk density, pH and soil organic carbon stock) ranged from moderate to low across all land uses in both reclaimed and unmined fields for 0–10 and 10–20 cm depths. The soil nitrogen stock ranged from low to moderate for unmined fields and moderate to high in some reclaimed fields. Soil pH was always less than 6·7 in both reclaimed and unmined fields. The mean soil bulk density was consistently lower in unmined (1·27 mg m−3 and 1·22 mg m−3) than reclaimed fields (1·39 mg m−3 and 1·34 mg m−3) planted to forage and corn, respectively. The SOC and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations were higher for reclaimed forage (33·30 g kg−1; 3·23 g kg−1) and cornfields (21·22 g kg−1; 3·66 g kg−1) than unmined forage (17·47 g kg−1; 1·98 g kg−1) and cornfield (17·70 g kg−1; 2·76 g kg−1). The SOC stocks in unmined soils did not differ among forage, corn or soybean fields but did so in reclaimed soils for 0–10 cm depth. The SOC stock for reclaimed forage (39·6 mg ha−1 for 0–10 cm and 28·6 mg ha−1 for 10–20 cm depths) and cornfields (28·3 mg ha−1; 32·2 mg ha−1) were higher than that for the unmined forage (22·7 mg ha−1; 17·6 mg ha−1) and corn (21·5 mg ha−1; 26·8 mg ha−1) fields for both depths. These results showed that the manure application increased SOC stocks in soil. Overall this study showed that if the reclamation is done properly, there is a large potential for SOC sequestration in reclaimed soils.

Purple soils (Eutric Regosols) are widely distributed in humid subtropical Southwest China. They are characterized by high nitrification activities, with risks of severe NO3? leaching. Incorporation of crop residues is considered an effective method to reduce NO3? loss. In the present study, we compared the effects of alfalfa, rice straw, and sugarcane bagasse on gross N transformation turnover in a purple soil (purple soil, pH 7.62) compared with those in an acid soil (acid soil, pH 5.26), at 12 h, 3 months, and 6 months after residue incorporation. The gross N transformation rates were determined by 15N tracing. All tested crop residues stimulated the gross N mineralization rates, but reduced the net mineralization rates in both soils at 12 h after residue incorporation; however, the extent of the effect varied with the crop residue qualities, with rice straw having the strongest effects. Crop residues reduced net nitrification rates by depressing gross autotrophic nitrification rates and stimulating NO3? immobilization rates in the purple soil, particularly after rice straw incorporation (net nitrification rate decreased from 16.72 mg N kg?1 d?1 in the control to ??29.42 mg N kg?1 d?1 at 12 h of residue incorporation); however, crop residues did not affect the gross autotrophic nitrification rates in the acid soil. Crop residue effects subsided almost completely within 6 months, with sugarcane bagasse showing the longest lasting effects. The results indicated that crop residues affected the N transformation rates in a temporal manner, dependent on soil properties and residue qualities.  相似文献

Studies about nitrogen (N) mineralization and nitrification in deep soil layers are rare because N processes are considered to occur mainly in topsoil that hosts active and diverse microbial communities. This study aimed to measure the soil potential net N mineralization (PNM) and nitrification (PNN) down to 4 m depth and to discuss factors controlling their variability. Twenty-one soil cores were collected at the Restinclières agroforestry experimental site, where 14-year-old hybrid walnut trees were intercropped with durum wheat. Soil cores were incubated in the dark in the laboratory at both 6 and 25°C. The soil was a deep calcic fluvisol with a fluctuating water table. It featured a black layer that was very rich in organic matter and permanently water saturated at depths between 3.0 and 4.0 m. The mean soil mineral N content was 3 mg N kg−1 soil in the upper 0.0–0.2 m layer, decreasing until a depth of 2 m and increasing to the maximum value of 25.8 mg N kg−1 soil in the black layer. While nitrate (NO3) was the dominant form of mineral N (89%) in the upper 0.0–0.2 m layer, its proportion progressively decreased with depth until ammonium (NH4+) became almost the only form of mineral N (97%) in the saturated black layer. Laboratory soil incubation revealed that PNM and PNN occurred at all depths, although the latter remained low at 6°C. The soil nitrate content in the black layer was multiplied by 48 times after 51 days of incubation at 25°C, whereas it was almost inexistent at the sampling date. While the soil total N, the pH and the incubation temperature explained 84% of the variation in PNM, only 29% of the percent nitrification variance was explained by the incubation temperature (Tinc) and the soil C-to-N ratio. These results point out the necessity to consider soil potential net N mineralization and nitrification of deep soil layers to improve model predictions.  相似文献

Significance of microbial biomass and non-exchangeable ammonium with respect to the nitrogen transformations in loess soils of Niedersachsen during the growing season of winter wheat. I. Change of pool sizes Nitrogen transformations in loess soils have been examined by laboratory and field experiments. After straw application (· 8 t · ha?1), N in microbial biomass (Nmic) increased by about 20 mg · kg?1 soil (· 90 kg N · ha?1 · 30 cm?1) after 9 days of incubation (20 °C). Another laboratory experiment yielded an increase of about 400 mg of NH4+-N · kg?1 fixed by minerals within 1 h after addition of 1 M NH4+-acetate. Defixation of the recently fixed NH4+ after addition of 1 M KCl amounted to only 60 mg · kg?1 within 50 days. In a field experiment with winter wheat 1991, an increase in Nmic of about 80 kg N · ha?1 · 30 cm?1 was observed from March to June. After July, growth of the microbes was limited by decreased soluble carbon concentrations in the rhizosphere. Different levels of mineral N-fertilizer (0, 177 and 213 kg N · ha?1) did not affect significantly the microbial biomass. The same field experiment yielded a decrease of non-exchangeable ammonium on the “zero”-fertilized plot in spring by 200 kg N · ha?1 · 30 cm?1. The pool of fixed ammonium increased significantly after harvest. After conventional mineral N-fertilizer application (213 kg N · ha?1). NH4+-defixation was only about 120 kg N · ha?1 · 30 cm?1 until July.

Identifying the nitrogen (N) fate is complicated and a great challenge in karst watersheds because of the co-existence of natural pools and anthropogenic sources. The objective of the study was to use stable isotopic composition of dual-isotope (δ15NNitrate and δ18ONitrate) and LOADEST model approaches to trace N sources, pathways in karst watershed. The study was conducted in the Houzhai watershed, which is a typical agricultural karst watershed from July 2016 to August 2018, to reveal the N fate and the coupled carbon(C)–N processes occurring in the riverine-watershed with agricultural activities. We found that the wet deposition of total nitrogen (TN) flux was 33.50 kg hm−2·a−1 and dissolved nitrogen (DN) flux was 21.66 kg hm−2·a−1. The DN runoff loss was 2.10 × 105 kg·a−1 and the loss of DN during the wet season accounted for 95.4% over a year. In the wet season, NO3-N daily efflux was 977.62 ± 516.66 kg ha−1·day−1and 248.77 ± 57.83 kg ha−1·day−1 in the dry season. The NH4+-N efflux was 29.17 ± 10.50 kg ha−1·day−1 and 4.42 ± 3.07 kg ha−1·day−1 in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. The main form output load of N was NO3-N which was more than 30 times as much as NH4+-N output loss. The NO3-N caused by rainfall contributed 11.82%–53.61% to the export load. Nitrate from soil contributed over 94% of the N to Houzhai river caused by N leaching. In addition, manure and farmland soil were the main sources of groundwater in the Houzhai watersheds, the contribution rates were 25.9% and 22.5%. The chemical N fertilizers affected carbonate weathering strongly, and the HCO3 flux caused by nitrification due to N fertilizers application in soil accounted for 23.5% of the entire watershed. This study suggested that carbonate weathering may be influenced by nitrogen nitrification in the karst watershed.  相似文献

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a perennial biofuel crop with a high production potential and suitable for growth on marginal land. This study investigates the long-term planting effect of switchgrass on the dynamics of soil moisture, pH, organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) and ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) for soils to a depth of 90-cm in a sandy wasteland, Inner Mongolia, China. After crop harvesting in 2015, soil samples were collected from under switchgrass stands established in 2006, 2008, and 2009, native mixture, and a control that was virgin sand. Averaged across six layers, soil moisture and pH was significantly higher under the native mixture than switchgrass or virgin sand. However, SOC and TN were significantly higher under the 2006 switchgrass stand when compared with all other vegetation treatments and the control. The SOC and TN increased from 2.37 and 0.26 g kg?1, respectively, for 2009 switchgrass stand, and to 3.21 and 0.42 g kg?1, respectively, for 2006 switchgrass stand. Meanwhile, SOC and TN contents were 2.51 and 0.27 g kg?1, respectively, under the native mixture. The soil beneath switchgrass and native mixture showed the highest NO3-N and NH4+-N, respectively. The soil moisture increased with depth while SOC, TN, and NO3-N decreased. An obvious trend of increasing moisture, SOC, TN, and mineral N was observed with increasing switchgrass stand age. Thus, growing switchgrass on sandy soils can enhance SOC and TN, improve the availability of mineral N, and generate more appropriate pH conditions for this energy cropping system.  相似文献

This study shows the effect of organic fertilizers at different stocking rates, on nitrogen (N) leaching, measured using zero-tension lysimeters under undisturbed grassland soil. The experiment included two organic fertilizer types – cow dung with dung water (D) and slurry (S), both at a range of stocking rates: 0.9 LU (livestock unit) ha?1, 1.4 LU ha?1, 2.0 LU ha?1 (corresponding to 54, 84 and 120 kg N ha?1, respectively) and a control (C) treatment. In percolated water, the contents of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+–N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3?–N) were studied. The average concentration of NH4+–N ranged from 0.91 to 1.44 mg l?1 on fertilized plots compared to 0.55 mg l?1 on the control plot. The average concentration of NO3?–N ranged from 5.2 to 9.5 mg l?1 on fertilized plots compared to 3.2 mg l?1 on the control plot. The results of this study showed that the use of organic fertilizers at chosen stocking rates influenced N leaching, but the concentration of N did not exceed the limits for drinking water permitted by Czech legislation. Stocking rates at 2.0 LU ha?1 and below do not result in elevated N concentrations in percolated water that pose environmental threat.  相似文献

To evaluate chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) and rocket salad [Eruca vesicaria (L.) Cav.subsp. sativa (Mill.)] capability to use ammonium‐nitrogen (NH4‐N) even in the absence of nitrate‐nitrogen (NO3‐N) in the nutrient solution, and the chances they offer to reduce leaf NO3 content, cultivated rocket and two cultivars of chicory ('Frastagliata’, whose edible parts are leaves and stems, and ‘Clio’, a leaf hybrid) were hydroponically grown in a growth chamber. Three nutrient solutions with the same nitrogen (N) level (4 mM) but a different NH4‐N:NO3‐N (NH4:NO3) ratio (100:0, 50:50, and 0:100) were used. Rocket growth was inhibited by NH4 nutrition, while it reached the highest values with the NH4:NO3 ratio 50:50. Water and N‐use efficiencies increased in rocket with the increase of NO3‐N percentage in the nutrient solution. In the best conditions of N nutrition, however, rocket accumulated NO3 in leaves in a very high concentration (about 6,300 mg kg‐1 fresh mass). For all the morphological and yield features analyzed, chicory resulted to be quite unresponsive to N chemical forms, despite it took more NO3‐N than NH4‐N when N was administered in mixed form. By increasing NO3‐N percentage in the nutrient solution, NO3 leaf content increased (5,466 mg kg‐1 fresh mass with the ratio NH4:NO3 0:100). On average, both chicory cultivars accumulated 213 mg NO3 kg‐1 fresh mass with the ratio NH4:NO3 100:0 and, differently from rocket, they showed that by using NH4 produce can be obtained very low in NO3 content.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted to determine the effect of nitrogen (N) fertilizer forms and doses on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) on three soils differing in their ammonium (NH4) fixation capacity [high = 161 mg fixed NH4-N kg?1 soil, medium = 31.5 mg fixed NH4-N kg?1 soil and no = nearly no fixed NH4-N kg?1 soil]. On high NH4+ fixing soil, 80 kg N ha?1 Urea+ ammonium nitrate [NH4NO3] or 240 kg N ha?1 ammonium sulfate [(NH4)2SO4]+(NH4)2SO4, was required to obtain the maximum yield. Urea + NH4NO3 generally showed the highest significance in respect to the agronomic efficiency of N fertilizers. In the non NH4+ fixing soil, 80 kg N ha?1 urea+NH4NO3 was enough to obtain high grain yield. The agronomic efficiency of N fertilizers was generally higher in the non NH4+ fixing soil than in the others. Grain protein was highly affected by NH4+ fixation capacities and N doses. Harvest index was affected by the NH4+ fixation capacity at the 1% significance level.  相似文献

The beneficial effect of sewage sludge in crop production has been demonstrated, but there is concern regarding its contribution to nitrate (NO3) leaching. The objectives of this study were to compare nitrogen (N) rates of sewage sludge and ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) on soil profile (0–180 cm), inorganic N [ammonium nitrate (NH4‐N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3‐N)] accumulation, yield, and N uptake in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). One field experiment was established in 1993 that evaluated six N rates (0 to 540 kg·ha‐1·yr‐1) as dry anaerobically digested sewage sludge and ammonium nitrate. Lime application in 1993 (4.48 Mg ha‐1) with 540 kg N ha‐1·yr‐1 was also evaluated. A laboratory incubation study was included to simulate N mineralization from sewage sludge applied at rates of 45, 180, and 540 kg N ha‐1·yr‐1. Treatments did not affect surface soil (0–30 cm) pH, organic carbon (C), and total N following the first (1994) and second (1995) harvest. Soil profile inorganic N accumulation increased when ≥270 kg N ha‐1 was applied as ammonium nitrate. Less soil profile inorganic N accumulation was detected when lime was applied. In general, wheat yields and N uptake increased linearly with applied N as sewage sludge, while wheat yields and N uptake peaked at 270 kg N ha‐1 when N was applied as ammonium nitrate. Lime did not affect yields or N uptake. Fertilizer N immobilization was expected to be high at this site where wheat was produced for the first time in over 10 years (previously in native bermudagrass). Estimated N use efficiency using sewage sludge in grain production was 20% (average of two harvests) compared to ammonium nitrate. Estimated plant N recovery was 17% for sewage sludge and 27% for ammonium nitrate.  相似文献
