Rearing of rohu spawn to fry size was carried out at high density (2000 spawn m?2) in large concrete nursery tanks (10 m × 5 m × 1.2 m) to standardize the daily ration of supplementary feed and to assess the impact of soil base on the fry performance. In Set‐1, supplementary feed was provided at 100% (control), 75% and 50% of the daily ration that is commonly used in earthen carp nursery ponds and named as the three treatments T‐1, T‐2 and T‐3 respectively. Although in Set‐II, performance of fry were evaluated in tanks provided with and without soil base. The fry survival was to the tune of 45–59% at this high density of 2000 spawn m?2, indicating the efficacy of the concrete nursery system for high density seed rearing. In Set‐I, T‐2 receiving 75% of the control ration exhibited similar fry growth as that of T‐1, but its fry survival (58.8%) was 10% higher than the latter. This indicated that supplementary feed in a concrete nursery can be reduced up to 25% of that provided in earthen nursery system while ensuring a higher fry yield. However, further reduction up to 50% of the control ration in T‐3 yielded lower fry survival and growth (P < 0.05) revealing inadequacy of the available feed. In Set‐II, treatment without soil base (T‐ns) yielded similar fry growth but 10% higher survival compared to that with the soil base (T‐s) revealing non‐essentiality of soil base in concrete tanks for such short‐term nursery rearing of rohu.  相似文献

Grey mullet ponds situated in Arcachon Bay on the western Atlantic coast of France, display contrasting mixohaline habitats. The pattern of osmoregulation of Chelon labrosus and Liza ramada exhibiting differential penetration of fish ponds has been investigated. Key variables of salinity and temperature have been considered. The tolerances to low salinities and to fresh water have been determined. The dynamics of variation in plasma osmotic pressure and major plasma electrolytes (Na+, Cl?, K+) were studied in terms of: (1) gradual adaptation to a decreasing salinity gradient; (2) effects of a long-term adaptation in fresh water; (3) effects of low temperatures on sea water adapted fish. Both species can adapt to a wide range of salinities; however, while L. ramada show a good hypoosmotic regulation, with no alteration in plasma concentration over a wide range of salinity and after a long stay (5 months) in fresh water, C. labrosus cannot live for long periods of time in a wholly fresh water habitat. Both field samples obtained from thick-lipped grey mullets forced to stay in a freshwater pond and experimentally adapted fish showed, after 3 months, an unequivoqual decrease in plasma sodium and chloride, and plasma osmolality decreased to the same extent; this pattern of no compensation is bound, sooner or later, to end in death. The inability of C. labrosus to develop a long-term hypoosmoregulation in fresh water is referred to salinity preferences which probably limit the upstream penetration of this species.Plasma osmolality and major electrolytes (sodium and chloride) increased in cold (4 °C) sea water. This response might be due to a reduced ability of grey mullets to osmoregulate in cold waters. In the poly-mesohaline ponds, Winter drop in temperature (4–6 °C) causes grey mullets to migrate to the meso-oligohaline ponds where the mean temperature is more elevated (8 °C) and temperature changes less rapid (6–9 °C).  相似文献

Aquaculture production is predicted to increase sharply. In this regard, live feed plays a crucial role in the larval phase of many aquaculture organisms. Hence, a persistent concern in aquaculture is to find low‐cost and eco‐friendly feed sources to culture live feed organisms. Branchinecta orientalis (G. O. Sars 1901), a fresh/brackish water fairy shrimp, was reared using effluent from rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum 1792) ponds, either fresh but supplemented with two species of microalgae, Scenedesmus sp. and Haematococcus sp., or non‐supplemented but after “ageing” of the culture medium. The feeding experiment was designed at a density of 100 individuals L?1 in 2‐L vessels. The results indicated that differences between final length, survival and most reproductive parameters of the treatment with aged medium and the treatment using fresh medium supplemented with Scenedesmus sp. were non‐significant (p > .05). Better results were obtained for a number of reproductive parameters in the treatment supplemented with Haematococcus sp. Thus, for intensive resting egg production of B. orientalis, microalgae can be replaced by aged non‐supplemented effluent from trout ponds as a nutrient‐rich feed source. This consequently can reduce drainage of nutrients into the environment and thus decrease aquatic pollution.  相似文献

Mugil cephalus is an important aquaculture species in Taiwan with highly valuable roe. In order to obtain its roe, mullet fry from various Taiwan estuaries are raised in aquaculture ponds until maturity. However, not all female mullets have developed ovaries. Therefore, we have attempted to use DNA profiling to aid selection of mullet fry for aquaculture. A large proportion of North coast mullet and some West coast mullet were identified as cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) mitochondrial lineage 1. COI mitochondrial lineage 2 was dominant in the west and east coast estuaries, whereas COI mitochondrial lineage 3 was fewest and only was present in Chang‐hua county (middle west of Taiwan). The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of lineage 1 individuals ranged from 0 to 5, no matter where the mullet fry were captured. The GSI of both the west and east coast lineage 2 individuals ranged from 0 to over 15, but the GSI of lineage 2 of the I‐lan (north east of Taiwan) population was generally lower than that of western populations. These findings suggest that a genetic difference whereby west coast lineage 2 mullet yield heavier roe although the body size of lineage 1 individual is larger than that of lineage 2. Thus, lineage 2 individuals with their normal GSI distribution are the most economically viable. The application of the rapid screening of mitochondrial lineages is expected to help aquaculture farmers cultivate lineage 2 fry for roe production rather than lineage 1.  相似文献

The first attempt to rear the gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata, in brackish water ponds in Egypt was conducted from April 1976 to February 1977. Experimental ponds were stocked with Sparus aurata fry of about 32 mm and 1.5 g average length and weight respectively at a rate of 3000 fry per one feddan of pond water (i.e. 0.42 ha). The growth rate was recorded monthly. An average length and weight of 190 mm and 78 g respectively was attained after 8 months without supplementary feeding or fertilization of pond water. mathematical equations expressing length-weight relationship and condition factor were derived for both wild and reared fish. The higher values of condition factor obtained for the reared fish in comparison to the wild fish signify their improved condition and hence their suitability for farming in Egypt.  相似文献

The fingerling‐rearing experiment of the threatened catfish, Mystus cavasius was carried out at different stocking densities in earthen nursery ponds. Twelve‐day‐old fry were stocked at 200 000 ha?1 in treatment‐1 (T1), 250 000 ha?1 in treatment‐2 (T2) and 300 000 ha?1 in treatment‐3 (T3) respectively. The mean length and weight of fry at stocking was 1.24 ± 0.25 cm and 0.11 ± 0.04 g respectively. Fry in all the experimental ponds were supplemented with SABINCO nursery feed for the first 14 days and starter‐I feed for days 15–56. The physico‐chemical parameters and plankton population of pond water were within the suitable level for fish culture. Growth in terms of final weight, final length, weight gain, length gain and specific growth rate and survival of fingerlings were significantly higher in T1 than those in T2 and T3. Feed conversion rate was significantly lower in T1 followed by T2 and T3 in that order. Significantly higher number of fingerlings was produced in T3 than that in T2 and T1. Even then, consistently higher net benefits were obtained from T1 than those from T3 and T2. Among the treatments evaluated, 200 000 fry ha?1 was the best stocking density considering the highest growth, production and net benefits of fingerlings of M. cavasius in nursery ponds.  相似文献

Growth and survival of hatchery‐bred Asian catfish, Clarias macrocephalus (Günther), fry reared at different stocking densities in net cages suspended in tanks and ponds were measured. The stocking densities used were 285, 571 and 1143 fry m?3 in tanks and 114, 228 and 457 fry m?3 in ponds. Fish were fed a formulated diet throughout the 28‐day rearing period. Generally, fish reared in cages in ponds grew faster, with a specific growth rate (SGR) range of 10.3–14.6% day?1, than those in cages suspended in tanks (SGR range 9–11.3% day?1). This could be attributed to the presence of natural zooplankton (copepods and cladocerans) in the pond throughout the culture period, which served as additional food sources for catfish juveniles. In both scenarios, the fish reared at lower densities had significantly higher SGR than fish reared at higher densities. In the pond, the SGR of fish held at 228 and 457 m?3 were similar to each other but were significantly lower than those of fish held at 114 m?3. The zooplankton in ponds consisted mostly of copepods and cladocerans, in contrast to tanks, in which rotifers were more predominant. Per cent survival ranged from 85% to 89% in tanks and from 78% to 87% in ponds and did not differ significantly among stocking densities and between rearing systems. In conclusion, catfish nursery in cages suspended in tanks and ponds is density dependent. Catfish fry reared at 285 m?3 in tanks and at 114 m?3 in ponds had significantly faster growth rates than fish reared at higher densities. However, the desired fingerling size of 3–4 cm total length for stocking in grow‐out culture can still be attained at stocking densities of 457 m?3 in nursery pond and 571 m?3 in tanks.  相似文献

The main aim of this study was to examine the effects of a polyculture system on the control of the external parasites of western white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. To this end, the western white shrimp postlarvae (PLs) were stocked in nine earthen ponds (600 m2) at a density of 20 PLs m?2 and reared for 4 months. After 40 days of shrimp stocking, Mullets, Mugil cephalus, were stocked at various densities including: control (0 fish/100 m2 pond), treatment 1 (T1: 2 fish/100 m2 pond) and treatment 2 (T2: 4 fish/100 m2 pond). Over the course of the experiment, the external parasites of shrimps were investigated by the preparation of a wet mount from the gill tissue. Based on the obtained results, totally two genera of protozoan parasites, i.e. Zoothamnium sp. and Epistylis sp., were identified over the course of the experiment. In all experimental groups, the incidence and abundance of Zoothamnium sp. was significantly higher than Epistylis sp. (< 0.05). Also, mean incidence per cent and mean abundance of Zoothamnium sp. and Epistylis sp. were significantly lower in the polyculture treatments (T1 and T2) compared to the monoculture group (control) (P < 0.05). Throughout this experiment, the total organic matter (TOM %) content of the bottom sediments and biological oxygen demand (BOD5 mg L?1) of water samples in the polyculture ponds were significantly lower than the monoculture group (P < 0.05). In contrast, the polyculture ponds had a higher concentration of water dissolved oxygen (O2 mg L?1) compared to the monoculture (P < 0.05). In conclusion, our results show that mullet as a secondary farmed species can reduce indirectly the parasitic pollution of western white shrimp probably through reducing the total organic matters in water and sediments and improving the water quality parameters.  相似文献

The objective of the present work was to determine the optimum dietary protein level for juvenile mullets. Five isocaloric diets were formulated to contain increasing levels (300, 350, 400, 450 and 500 g kg?1) of crude protein (CP) corresponding to 18.7 MJ metabolizable energy kg?1. All diets were tested in triplicate. Each experimental unit was composed of a 50 L tank with 50 juveniles (mean ± SE initial weight and length equal to 1.17 ± 0.02 g and 4.34 ± 0.03 cm respectively). Diets were offered five times a day until apparent satiation for 35 days. No significant difference (P>0.05) was observed in survival rate, feed efficiency and body composition between treatments. However, weight gain, feed consumption and specific growth rate were higher in fish fed the 350 g kg?1 CP level than those fed the highest protein content diet (500 g kg?1 CP). The amount of postprandial ammonia excreted by mullet was linearly related to protein intake. Intestinal tryptic activity was inversely proportional to the percentage of dietary CP. It is likely that diets containing <350 g kg?1 CP will be needed for on‐growing mullet, especially when reared in ponds with abundant natural food.  相似文献

Abstract. As currently practiced, freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man), aquaculture in Hawaii requires large inputs of supplementary feed, water and labour. The high cost of these inputs greatly restricts profit potential. An experiment was conducted to compare an alternative prawn production system which used lower feeding rates and fish polycultures to reduce inputs. Three treatments were run in quadruplicate: (1) control—prawns stocked at standard densities (11.5 per n2) in monoculture and fed standard prawn pellets at the commercial ration recommendations by New & Singholka (1982); (2) low feed—prawns at standard densities and fish [silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Valenciennes), grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella (Valenciennes), and grey mullet, Mugil cephalus (L.)] fed one-half commercial ration; and (3) maintenance feed—prawns at standard densities and fish fed one-tenth commercial ration. Although prawn yield characteristics (mean weights, harvestable sizes, survival, net yields) were not significantly different (P > 0.05) based on an analysis of variance in the three treatments over the approximately 9.5-month culture period, this lack of significance most likely resulted from interpond variability and the lack of a large number of replicates. The relatively poor survival (60–63%) of gray mullet and an almost twofold difference in prawn yields in the control and maintenance feed treatments suggest that there was in fact competition for resources in the nominally polyculture systems. Nevertheless, the wet weight yield of biomass from all species was twice as high in the low feed ponds as in the control ponds.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of inland water salinity on growth performance, feed conversion efficiency and intestinal enzyme activity in grey mullet. In experiment I, a 90 day monoculture of grey mullet at different salinity levels (0, 10, 15, 20 and 25%) was carried out. The fingerlings were stocked at 5000 per hectare and fed on a supplementary diet at 5% BW d–1. This Study revealed that fish growth mean body weight (90.5 ± 4.5 g) and mean length (21.6 ± 0.4 cm), SGR (4.70%) and growth per day (0.99 g d–1) were significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced in fish maintained at 10% salinity in comparison with other treatments. Nutrient levels, phytoplankton population, NPP and chlorophyll a all decreased with an increase in salinity (>10%). In addition, zooplankton populations increased with an increase in the salinity level. Most of the other hydrochemical characteristics remained at optimal levels in all other treatments. Fish weight gain showed a significant positive correlation with productivity indicating parameters viz. alkalinity (r = 0.53), turbidity (r = 0.62), NPP (r = 0.75) and chlorophyll a (r = 0.46), clearly revealing that fish growth is also related to the trophic status of the ponds. In the second experiment (Experiment II), mullet fry were exposed to five different salinity levels (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30%) and maintained for 70 days in the laboratory. Significantly (p < 0.05) high growth, (SGR and per cent increase in body weight), feed conversion efficiency and intestinal enzyme activity were observed in the group maintained at 10 salinity in comparison with other groups maintained at similar salinity levels. Carcass composition, musc1e and liver glycogen levels were also significantly (p < 0.05) affected by salinity changes.  相似文献

In 1977 and 1978, two fish ponds at the Dor Aquaculture Experiment Station were integrated with duck production. Each pond's area was 400 m2 and they were stocked with a polyculture of common carp, Tilapia, silver carp and grass carp (White Amur). The ducks were fed with prepared, nutritionally balanced feed, while the fish had to get by with the ducks' droppings plus the feed dropped directly from the ducks' beaks into the ponds. The ducks' performance on the ponds was superior to their ‘land’ control in growth rate, feed efficiency, viability and cleanness of feathers and skin. The average daily gain of the fish was 38.5 kg ha?1, not significantly different from ponds receiving similar mixtures of dry poultry manure plus supplementary feeds. Our experimental results provide necessary empirical support to the conclusion that the system is very efficient and its use should be expanded in warm water aquaculture.  相似文献

This study compared co-feeding zooplankton (ZP, mixed copepods and mysids) and formulated diets (FD) supplemented with L-tryptophan (TRP) on the survival and growth of grouper and sea bass fry nursed in brackish water ponds. Grouper (84 fry m?3) and sea bass (150 fry m?3) were reared for 30 days and 60 days, respectively, in net cages within two separate 743 m2 nursery ponds. Five treatments (with three replicates each) were compared (P < 0.05): FD-1 = ZP + basal FD (no added TRP, but containing 0.29% endogenous TRP); FD-2 = ZP + (FD 0.58% TRP); FD-3 = ZP + (FD 1.22% TRP); FD-4 = ZP + (FD 2.50% TRP); and FD-5 = minced fish (Sardinella sp.) + basal FD (no additional TRP). TRP supplementation in grouper diets produced no significant affect on growth but increased survival at rates of 0.58% and above. TRP supplementation at 2.5% (FD-4) produced significantly better sea bass growth than other diets but had no affect on survival. Zooplankton improved both survival and growth in both grouper and sea bass juveniles compared to the minced fish diet, and may be a practical and lower cost alternative to indoor nursing.  相似文献

The waters of Lake Quarun have undergone severe chemical changes in the last 50 years. Salinity has increased progressively and is now 38‰ in some regions of the lake. Tilapia zillii is the only species that has not been affected by the salinity increase. Mullet fry have been stocked in the lake since 1928. There has been a progressive increase in the average total production of mullet from 0.45 tons (1929–1932) to 128.25 tons (1966–1969), and to 291.67 tons (1975/76–1978/79). Length and age composition of mullets in Lake Quarun were studied. The growth in length and weight of Mugil cephalus showed that the fish were in better condition in Lake Quarun than in other coastal areas of Egypt. It is recommended that studies should continue to improve survival of transplanted mullet fry into the lake, and on the artificial propagation of mullets on site.  相似文献

A sustainable semi-intensive pond aquaculture technology including major carp species as cash-crop and small indigenous fish species (SIS) as food for the farmers' families is being optimized in Bangladesh. The inclusion of silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), a cheap large species affordable by poor farmers, is now being considered. As part of a study on the effects of this filter feeder on polycultures including the large carps rohu (Labeo rohita), catla (Catla catla) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and the SIS punti (Puntius sophore) and mola (Amblypharyngodon mola), an experiment was carried out under farm conditions to test the effects of silver carp and of each SIS species on the growth, survival and yield of the large and small species and on pond ecology. The experiment was performed in 38 farmers' fishponds of different sizes, from 220 m2 to 1200 m2. The results show that the larger the fish pond the better rohu performance, the larger punti fry weight and the lower punti fry harvested biomass. Pond size did not affect other fish species. The addition of 250 mola and/or punti per 100 m2 fishponds affected rohu and catla and did not affect common and silver carps. The addition of mola alone reduced rohu's parameters by 15%. The addition of SIS in the three combinations tested (250 mola, 250 punti, 125 of each species) reduced catla's parameters by 20-24%. Punti fry were larger when both SIS were stocked and punti fry biomass was larger when only punti were present. Total mola harvested biomass and yield were larger when the entire SIS stocked were only mola. The addition of 10 silver carp over the 99 large carps stocked per 100 m2 fishponds negatively affected rohu and catla growth and yield by about 15-21% and 45-50% respectively but not their survival, did not affect common carp performance, did not affect punti and mola reproduction in the ponds, reduced punti yields by 25%, reduced mola performance by about 35%, and silver carp own biomass increased total yield and total income in about 12% each. These effects are explained and discussed considering fish interactions through the food web. The decreased income from selling the more expensive large carps is more than compensated by that obtained from silver carp, which allows the option to the farmer to sell part of the silver carp to complete the cash income that would have been obtained from large carps only if silver carp would not be stocked, and consume the rest with the family.  相似文献

A comparative study of catfish, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (Lacépède) production was made in brackish water ponds near Lagos Lagoon using groundnut cake as the main supplementary feed. Data obtained included food conversion values, condition factor, length-weight relationships, survival and growth. Significant differences were recorded in lengths and weights of catfish given supplemental feed and those in natural ponds. In ponds without feed, catfish had a 114.1% gain in weight, and those given supplemental feed had a 858.1% gain in weight.  相似文献

Production trials of threatened snakehead fish (Channa striatus) were carried out under different stocking densities in earthen ponds of Bangladesh. The average weight and length of the fingerlings during stocking was 17.63 ± 1.23 g and 13.21 ± 0.52 cm. Fingerlings were stocked at 5000 ha?1 in treatment‐1 (T1), 6250 ha?1 in treatment‐2 (T2) and 7500 ha?1 in treatment‐3 (T3) respectively. Fish in all the experimental ponds were fed with supplementary feed comprising of fish meal (30%) and mustard oilcake (70%) at the rate of 3–6% of estimated body weight two times per day. In addition, trash fish were supplied at the rate of 2–3% of the estimated biomass on each alternate day. In situ water quality parameters of the pond were within the suitable range for fish culture. The growth and survival of fingerlings were significantly higher in T1 than in T2 and T3. The food conversion ratio was significantly lower (P<0.05) in T1 than in T2 and T3. The estimated gross and net production of fish was higher in T1, followed by T2 and T3. Overall, the highest growth, survival and production were obtained from T1. Therefore, it could be concluded that of 5000 fingerlings ha?1 is the most suitable stocking density for culturing C. striatus under a monoculture system in the earthen ponds for better production.  相似文献

The upper incipient lethal temperatures of the freshwater mullet, Rhinomugil corsula, acclimated to 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C in fresh water, were 32.4, 34.1, 36.0, 36.2 and 36.5°C respectively, and the corresponding lower lethal temperatures were 10.5, 11.5, 13.2, 15.8 and 19.5°C. The mullet has a total tolerance (area of thermal polygon) of 569°C with an upper and lower thermal tolerance of 253 and 316°C2. Likewise, the total resistance of the mullet was 391°C2, with upper and lower resistance zones of 181 and 210°C respectively. The upper critical temperatures of swimming inhibition of R. corsula (17.2 cm; acclimation 30°C), determined in a swimming tunnel, were 35.2, 34.6 and 34.2 for water current velocities of 38, 62 and 77 cm s?1 respectively. The corresponding lower critical temperatures were 26.2, 27.5 and 28.1°C. These results indicated the stenothermal nature of the mullet by comparison with other fishes, e.g. Tilapia mossambica. In tests on the influence of ambient salinity on thermal resistance, R. corsula survived longest at 7‰ (iso-osmotic salinity). At salinities above and below this point, survival times were shorter at any lethal temperature. In a tentative scheme for quantification of stress due to temperature and salinity at death (after acclimation to 30°C and tested at 37°C), the hypo-osmotic and hyper-osmotic stress were estimated to be 50 and 31% of the thermal stress (100%) respectively.  相似文献
