The contributions of root and microbial respiration to the CO2 emission from the surface of gray forest and soddy-podzolic soils under meadow and forest vegetation were determined in field and laboratory experiments. In the field, a new modification of the substrate-induced respiration (SIR) method was applied. According to this method, the contribution of root respiration was estimated at 41–50% for meadow cenoses and 33% for forest cenoses; similar values were obtained in the course of separate incubation of roots and soil in laboratory (42–57% and 29–32%, respectively) and with the use of the laboratory version of the SIR method (35–40% and 21–31%, respectively). The analysis of difference between the values of root respiration and microbial respiration obtained by the field and laboratory methods for the same experimental plots and the comparison of advantages and disadvantages of these methods made it possible to outline the ways for the further improvement of the field version of the SIR method.  相似文献

In the mineral horizons of the soils under different southern taiga forests (oak, archangel spruce, and aspen in the Kaluzhskie Zaseki Reserve of Kaluga region and the green moss spruce and spruce-broadleaved forests of the Zvenigorod Biological Station of Moscow State University in Moscow region), the carbon content in the microbial biomass (Cmic), the rate of the basal respiration (BR), and the specific microbial respiration (qCO2= BR/Cmic) were determined. The Cmic content was measured using the method of substrate-induced respiration (SIR). In the upper humus horizons of the soils, the Cmic content amounted to 762–2545 μg/g and the BR ranged from 1.59 to 7.55 μg CO2-C/g per h. The values of these parameters essentially decreased down the soil profiles. The portion of Cmic in the organic carbon of the humus horizons of the forest soils was 4.4 to 13.2%. The qCO2values increased with the depth in the soils of the Biological Station and did not change in the soils of the Reserve. The pool of Cmic and Corg and the microbial production of CO2 (BR) within the forest soil profiles are presented.  相似文献

In two layers of the humus horizons in soddy-podzolic soils of different biogeocenoses (Kostroma oblast) representing a succession series, the carbon content in the microbial biomass (Cmic) was determined using the method of substrate-induced respiration and the rate of microbial CO2 production (basal respiration, BR). The Cmic content was from 110 to 755 μg/g soil, and the BR was from 0.40 to 2.52 μg CO2-C/g/h. A gradual increase in the Cmic content and BR was found in the following sequence: cropland—fallow (7-year-old)—young (20- and 45-year-old) forests—secondary and native (primary) forests (90- and 450-year-old, respectively). In the litter, the Cmic content was higher in the 45-year-old forest than in the secondary and native forests: 10423, 6459, and 4258 μg C/g of substrate, respectively. The portion of Cmic in the soil organic carbon content in the upper layer of the soils studied varied from 1.3 to 5.4%; its highest value was in the soils under the secondary and native forests. The pool of microbial biomass carbon and the microbial CO2 production in the upper 25-cm layer of the soils were calculated.  相似文献

Agricultural headwater ditches are an important source of indirect agricultural nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, but their contribution is difficult to quantify. In the present study, the static chamber-gas chromatography technique was used for measurement of N2O emissions from vegetated (V, the whole ditch ecosystem) and non-vegetated (NV, the sediment-water interface only) zones in an agricultural headwater ditch in the Central Sichuan Basin in Southwestern China during 2014–2015. Annual N2O emissions from the agricultural headwater ditch were similar to direct N2O emissions from an adjacent N-fertilized purple soil cropland, suggesting nitrogen (N)-enriched ditches are important anthropogenic N2O sources. Mean cumulative N2O emissions during summer and autumn were higher than those in spring and winter. Overlying water nitrate (NO3 ?-N) concentration and sediment-water interface temperature were primary factors affecting seasonal N2O emissions. Heavy precipitation transported NO3 ?-N from cropland and increase NO3 ?-N in the agricultural headwater ditch water, and subsequently stimulate N2O emissions. A literature review of EF5r (the indirect N2O emission factor for rivers) revealed a mean value of 0.23%, similar to our values (0.27%), and also the default value (0.25%) proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The number of studies on indirect N2O emissions remains limited, and more in situ measurements are needed to have more accurate values of EF5r.  相似文献

Nitrous oxide (N2O) contributes to greenhouse effect; however, little information on the consequences of different moisture levels on N2O/(N2O+N2) ratio is available. The aim of this work was to analyze the influence of different soil moisture values and thus of redox conditions on absolute and relative emissions of N2O and N2 at intact soil cores from a Vertic Argiudoll. For this reason, the effect of water-filled porosity space (WFPS) values of soil cores of 40, 80,100, and 120% (the last one with a 2-cm surface water layer) was investigated. The greatest N2O emission occurred at 80% WFPS treatment where conditions were not reductive enough to allow the complete reduction to N2. The N2O/(N2O+N2) ratio was lowest (0–0.051) under 120% WFPS and increased with decreasing soil moisture content. N2O/(N2O+N2) ratio values significantly correlated with soil Eh; redox conditions seemed to control the proportion of N gases emitted as N2O. N2O emissions did not correlate satisfactorily with N2O/(N2O+N2) ratio values, whereas they were significantly explained by the amount of total N2O+N2 emissions.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the chemical nature and application frequency of N fertilizers at different moisture contents on soil N2O emissions and N2O/(N2O+N2) ratio. The research was based on five fertilization treatments: unfertilized control, a single application of 80 kg ha−1 N-urea, five split applications of 16 kg ha−1 N-urea, a single application of 80 kg ha−1 N–KNO3, five split applications of 16 kg ha−1 N–KNO3. Cumulative N2O emissions for 22 days were unaffected by fertilization treatments at 32% water-filled pore space (WFPS). At 100% and 120% WFPS, cumulative N2O emissions were highest from soil fertilized with KNO3. The split application of N fertilizers decreased N2O emissions compared to a single initial application only when KNO3 was applied to a saturated soil, at 100% WFPS. Emissions of N2O were very low after the application of urea, similar to those found at unfertilized soil. Average N2O/(N2O+N2) ratio values were significantly affected by moisture levels (p = 0.015), being the lowest at 120% WFPS. The N2O/(N2O+N2) ratio averaged 0.2 in unfertilized soil and 0.5 in fertilized soil, although these differences were not statistically significant.  相似文献

A thorough understanding of the role of microbes in C cycling in relation to fire is important for estimation of C emissions and for development of guidelines for sustainable management of dry ecosystems. We investigated the seasonal changes and spatial distribution of soil total, dissolved organic C (DOC) and microbial biomass C during 18 months, quantified the soil CO2 emission in the beginning of the rainy season, and related these variables to the fire frequency in important dry vegetation types grassland, woodland and dry forest in Ethiopia. The soil C isotope ratios (δ13C) reflected the 15-fold decrease in the grass biomass along the vegetation gradient and the 12-fold increase in woody biomass in the opposite direction. Changes in δ13C down the soil profiles also suggested that in two of the grass-dominated sites woody plants were more frequent in the past. The soil C stock ranged from being 2.5 (dry forest) to 48 times (grassland) higher than the C stock in the aboveground plant biomass. The influence of fire in frequently burnt wooded grassland was evident as an unchanged or increasing total C content down the soil profile. DOC and microbial biomass measured with the fumigation-extraction method (Cmic) reflected the vertical distribution of soil organic matter (SOM). However, although SOM was stable throughout the year, seasonal fluctuations in Cmic and substrate-induced respiration (SIR) were large. In woodland and woodland-wooded grassland Cmic and SIR increased in the dry season, and gradually decreased during the following rainy season, confirming previous suggestions that microbes may play an important role in nutrient retention in the dry season. However, in dry forest and two wooded grasslands Cmic and SIR was stable throughout the rainy season, or even increased in this period, which could lead to enhanced competition with plants for nutrients. Both the range and the seasonal changes in soil microbial biomass C in dry tropical ecosystems may be wider than previously assumed. Neither SIR nor Cmic were good predictors of in situ soil respiration. The soil respiration was relatively high in infrequently burnt forest and woodland, while frequently burnt grasslands had lower rates, presumably because most C is released through dry season burning and not through decomposition in fire-prone systems. Shifts in the relative importance of the two pathways for C release from organic matter may have strong implications for C and nutrient cycling in seasonally dry tropical ecosystems.  相似文献

The influence of surface fires and cutting on the quantitative and functional parameters of microbial cenoses in the soils of light coniferous forests in the Lower Angara River basin was studied. In the litters of soddy-podzolic soils under pine forests, the microbial biomass was 4080–4700 μg C/g; the basal respiration was 17.00–20.32 μg C-CO2/g/h; and the qCO2, 4.17–4.33 μg C-CO2/mg Cmic/h. In the humus-accumulative horizon, these values were 880–1160 μg C/g, 2.48–4.12 μg C-CO2/g/h, and 2.83–3.55 C-CO2/mg Cmic/h, respectively. In the litter of the one-year-old felled area, the content of microbial biomass carbon was by two times lower; in the litter of burned plots, it was by 60–70% lower than in the litter of the control area. The intensity of the microbial respiration did not change proportionally to the microbial biomass content, which resulted in an imbalance between the processes of the organic matter mineralization-immobilization towards a release of CO2 as evidenced by the increase of the qCO2 values by 2–4 times. In the five-year-old felled area, at the stage of restoring the herbaceous vegetation, a tendency towards the stabilization of the destructive microbiological processes was revealed. In the felled areas, the high number of heterotrophic microorganisms, the reduced oligotrophy of the soil organic horizons, and the more intense microbiological mineralization of the organic matter were observed. The surface fires in the felled areas and forests significantly affected the structure and the number of ecological-trophic groups of microorganisms in the litters, the humus-accumulative horizons, and in the upper mineral soil layers. The maximal structural and functional disturbance in the soil microbial complex was found in the logged areas affected by fires.  相似文献

The chemical and microbial properties of afforested mine soils are likely to depend on the species composition of the introduced vegetation. This study compared the chemical and microbial properties of organic horizons and the uppermost mineral layers in mine soils under pure pine (Pinus sylvestris), birch (Betula pendula), larch (Larix decidua), alder (Alnus glutinosa), and mixed pine–alder and birch–alder forest stands. The studied properties included soil pH, content of organic C (Corg) and total N (Nt), microbial biomass (Cmic), basal respiration, nitrogen mineralization rate (Min-N), and the activities of dehydrogenase, acid phosphomonoesterase, and urease. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) was used to detect differences in the chemical composition of soil organic matter under the studied forest stands. There were significant differences in Corg and Nt contents between stands in both O and mineral soil horizons and also in the chemical composition of the accumulated organic matter, as indicated by NIR spectra differences. Alder was associated with the largest Corg and Nt accumulation but also with a significant decrease of pH in the mineral soil. Microbial biomass, respiration, the percentage of Corg present as Cmic, Min-N, and dehydrogenase activity were the highest under the birch stand, indicating a positive effect of birch on soil microflora. Admixture of alder to coniferous stand increased basal respiration, Min-N, and activities of dehydrogenase and acid phosphomonoesterase as compared with the pure pine stand. In the O horizon, soil pH and Nt content had the most important effects on all microbial properties. In this horizon, the activities of urease and acid phosphomonoesterase did not depend on microbial biomass. In the mineral layer, however, the amount of accumulated C and microbial biomass were of primary importance for the enzyme activities.  相似文献

Scale-dependent spatial variability of microbiological characteristics in soil of a beech forest The spatial variability of the microbial biomass content (Cmic), the microbial respiration rate (basal respiration) and the metabolic quotient (qCO2) was analyzed in sandy Cambisols and Luvisols in a beech forest in Northern Germany. Highest variability of microbiological features and, thus, the distance of independent samples was around 10 m that is discussed with reference to spatial hierarchy. Structural changes between the 10 m and 50 m grid were suggested for the Ah horizon due to the break of correlations of Cmic content and the contents of Corg and plant-available Ca, Mg, K and Nt. The Cmic content correlated with the Corg content close to tree trunks and ecotones like borders of the forest and clearings. The qCO2 did not generally increase with declining pH value. High H+ concentrations and Corg content in the litter layer near to the tree trunk indicated retarded microbial mineralization rates. High proportion of microorganisms that are resistant to low pH value and adjusted ro readily-degradable substrates seems to dominate in the soil close to the tree.  相似文献

A study was conducted to examine the responses of microbial activity and nitrogen (N) transformations along an altitudinal gradient. The gradient was divided into three parts. Three areas were sampled: upper part (UP): coniferous forest, corn field, and abandoned corn field; middle part (MP): tropical cloud forest, grassland, and corn field (COL); and lower part (LP): tropical deciduous forest and sugarcane. The results showed that soil microbial biomass carbon (C) and basal respiration were significantly higher in MP and UP than in LP, whereas the microbial quotient (Cmic/Corg) was higher in LP and MP than in UP. The metabolic quotient (qCO2) was similar among gradient parts evaluated. Net N mineralization, ammonification, and nitrification rates were higher in UP than MP and LP. We found that in UP, the forest conversion to cropland resulted in no significant differences in microbial activity and N transformation rates between land uses. In MP, microbial biomass C, ammonification, and net N mineralization rates decreased significantly with conversion to cropland, but Cmic/Corg and nitrification were higher in COL. Basal respiration and qCO2 were significantly lower in COL when compared with other land uses. In LP, lower microbial biomass C, Cmic/Corg, and nitrification rates but higher ammonification and net N mineralization rates were observed in tropical deciduous forest than in sugarcane. No significant differences in basal respiration and qCO2 were found between uses of LP. Clearly, then, soil organic C is not equally accessible to the microbial community along the gradient studied. Twenty plots (20 m2 each) were selected in coniferous and mixed forests of the industrial Vologda district and the Vytegra district without developed industries in Vologda region. In March, snow cores corresponding to the snow cover depth were taken on these plots. In August, soil samples from the 0- to 20-cm layer of litter-free soddy-podzolic soil (Albic Retisol (Ochric)) were taken on the same plots in August. The content of mineral nitrogen (Nmin), including its ammonium (NH+4) and nitrate (NO-3) forms, was determined in the snow (meltwater) and soil. The contents of total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and elements (Al, Ca); pH; particle size distribution; and microbiological parameters―carbon of microbial biomass (Cmic) and microbial respiration (MR)―were determined in the soil. The ratio MR/Cmic = qCO2 (specific respiration of microbial biomass, or soil microbial metabolic quotient) was calculated. The content of Nmic in meltwater of two districts was 1.7 mg/L on the average (1.5 and 0.3 mg/L for the NH+4 and NO3 forms, respectively). The annual atmospheric deposition was 0.6–8.9 kg Nmin/ha, the value of which in the Vologda district was higher than in the Vytegra district by 40%. Reliable correlations were found between atmospheric NH+4 depositions and Cmic (–0.45), between NH+4 and qCO2 (0.56), between atmospheric NO-3 depositions and the soil NO-3 (–0.45), and between NO-3 and qCO2 (–0.58). The content of atmospheric Nmin depositions correlated with the ratios C/N (–0.46) and Al/Ca (–0.52) in the soil. In forests with the high input of atmospheric nitrogen (>2.0 kg NH+4/(ha yr) and >6.4 kg Nmin/(ha yr)), a tendency of decreasing Cmic, C/N, and Al/Ca, as well as increasing qCO2, was revealed, which could be indicative of deterioration in the functioning of microbial community and the chemical properties of the soil.  相似文献

Tree species differ in their effect on soil development and nutrient cycling. Conversion of beech coppice to pine plantations can alter soil physical and chemical properties, which in turn may have significant impacts on soil microbial biomass C and N (Cmic, Nmic). The major objective of this study was to evaluate soil quality changes associated with the forest conversion in humid NW Turkey. Results from this study showed that levels of soil organic carbon (Corg), total nitrogen (Nt), moisture, Cmic and Nmic under beech coppice were consistently higher but levels of pH, CaCO3 and EC were lower compared to pine plantation. Differences between the forest stands in Cmic and Nmic were mainly related to the size of the Corg stores in soil and to tree species. In addition, high level of CaCO3 is likely to reduce pools of soil organic C and possibly even microbial biomass C and N in pine forests. The average Cmic:Nmic ratios were higher in soils under beech coppice than pine plantation, while Cmic:Corg and Nmic:Nt percentages were similar in both forest types. These results revealed the differences in microbial community structure associated with different tree species and the complex interrelationships between microbial biomass, soil characteristics, litter quantity and quality.  A study of the effects of different qualities (fresh and composted) and rates (equivalent to 120, 240, and 360 kg N ha–1) of mustard meal application on wheat yields on humid tropical vertisol was started in 1990 at Ginchi Research Station in Ethiopia. After continuous wheat cropping for 7 years and without any further fertilisation, soil microbial parameters (basal respiration, microbial biomass-C and N, organic-C, and ecophysiological quotients) were studied during one growth period. After 7 years of application, mustard meal still exerted a significant positive effect on microbial biomass, basal respiration, organic-C, Cmic : Nmic ratio, and metabolic quotient (qCO2). Organic-C, qCO2 and Cmic : Nmic ratios were higher for the compost-amended plots than plots amended with fresh mustard meal. Basal respiration, Cmic, and Cmic : Nmic ratio showed a clear seasonality, but only in manured plots. The data indicate shifts in microbial community structure (from bacteria to fungi and from r to K strategists) and suggest positive medium-term effects of mustard meal on humid tropical vertisol biological qualities. In 11 rain‐fed arable soils of the Potohar plateau, Pakistan, the amounts of microbial‐biomass C (Cmic), biomass N (Nmic), and biomass P (Pmic) were analyzed in relation to the element‐specific total storage compartment, i.e., soil Corg, Nt, and Pt. The effects of climatic conditions and soil physico‐chemical properties on these relationships were highlighted with special respect to crop yield levels. Average contents of soil Corg, Nt, and Pt were 3.9, 0.32, and 0.61 mg (g soil)–1, respectively. Less than 1% of Pt was extractable with 0.5 M NaHCO3. Mean contents of Cmic, Nmic, and Pmic were 118.4, 12.0, and 3.9 µg (g soil)–1. Values of Cmic, Nmic, Pmic, soil Corg, and Nt were all highly significantly interrelated. The mean crop yield level was closely connected with all soil organic matter– and microbial biomass–related properties, but showed also some influence by the amount of precipitation from September to June. Also the fraction of NaHCO3‐extractable P was closely related to soil organic matter, soil microbial biomass, and crop yield level. This reveals the overwhelming importance of biological processes for P turnover in alkaline soils.  相似文献

At cattle overwintering areas, inputs of nutrients in animal excrements create conditions favourable for intensive microbial activity in soil. During nitrogen transformations, significant amounts of N2O are released, which makes overwintering areas important sources of N2O emission. In previous studies, however, increasing intensity of long-term cattle impact did not always increase emissions of N2O from the soil: in some cases, N2O emissions from the soil were lower at the most impacted area than at the moderately impacted one. Thus, the relationships between the level of long-term animal impact and potential production of N2O from soil by denitrification were investigated in field and laboratory experiments. Field measurements indicated that the production of N2O after glucose and nitrate amendments was greater in severely and moderately impacted locations than in an unimpacted location, while differences between the severely and moderately impacted locations were not significant. In laboratory experiments, the potential production of N2O (measured as anaerobic production of N2O after addition of glucose and nitrate) was highest in the moderately impacted soil. Surprisingly, potential N2O production was lower in the most impacted than in the moderately impacted soil, and the net N2O production in the highly impacted soil was further decreased by a significant reduction of N2O to N2. The expected stimulating effect of an increasing ratio of glucose C to nitrate N on the reduction of N2O to N2 during denitrification was not confirmed. The results show that cattle increase the denitrification potential of the soil but suggest that the denitrification potential does not increase indefinitely with increasing cattle impact.  相似文献

The relationships of soil microbial biomass C (Cmic) or N (Nmic) with mean annual precipitation and temperature were studied along a climatic transect in the Mongolian steppe. Soil organic C (Corg) and total N (Nt), respiration rate, Cmic and Nmic at depths of 0–5 and 5–10 cm decreased with increasing aridity. The contents of Corg and Nt in the 0- to 5-cm soil layers decreased linearly with precipitation reduction along the transect. Cmic and Nmic changes with precipitation were not linear, with higher changes between 330 and 128 mm mean annual precipitation. Cmic/Corg and Nmic/Nt increased with increasing aridity. The metabolic quotient qCO2 of 0- to 5-cm soil layers was low between 330 and 273 mm precipitation. The relationship between the qCO2 of the 0- to 5-cm soil layers and the mean annual precipitation was well fitted with a quadratic function y =0.0006x2 –0.40x +86.0, where y is the qCO2 (µmol CO2-C mmol–1 Cmic) and x is the mean annual precipitation (mm). Corg, Nt, Cmic, Nmic and respiration rate decreased exponentially with increasing mean annual temperature in both the 0- to 5- and 5- to 10-cm soil layers, and change rate was lower when the mean annual temperature was higher than 2.6°C. The close relationships of the mean annual precipitation or temperature with soil Corg, Nt, Cmic, Nmic, Cmic/Corg and qCO2 indicate that each parameter can be calculated by determining the other parameters in this specific climatic range.  相似文献

The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV) has favorable attributes for producing biofuels. Two study sites were established on retired agricultural fields in the LMAV to explore switchgrass (SWITCH) and eastern cottonwood (CTWD) as biofuel feedstocks. A soybean-sorghum rotation (CROP) was also established as a conventional cropping system. Soil efflux gas (carbon dioxide [CO2], methane [CH4], and nitrous oxide [N2O]), microbial biomass carbon (Cmic) and dehydrogenase activity were measured for two years. Cumulative growing-season soil CO2 efflux of SWITCH exceeded that of CROP; SWITCH had higher daily CO2 efflux than CTWD and CROP in some months. SWITCH and CTWD had greater Cmic than CROP at both sites. Soil CH4 and N2O efflux rates were low for much of the study, with only short-term differences in soil CH4 observed. Converting these retired agricultural sites to SWITCH increased soil CO2 efflux relative to CROP, with increases attributable to greater plant and microbial respiration.  相似文献

The only known sink for nitrous oxide (N2O) is biochemical reduction to dinitrogen (N2) by N2O reductase (N2OR). We hypothesized that the application of N2O-reducing denitrifier-inoculated organic fertilizer could enhance soil N2O consumption while the disruption of nosZ genes could result in inactivation of N2O consumption. To test such hypotheses, a denitrifier-inoculated granular organic fertilizer was applied to both soil microcosms and fields. Of 41 denitrifier strains, 38 generated 30N2 in the end products of denitrification (30N2 and 46N2O) after the addition of Na15NO3 in culture condition, indicating their high N2O reductase activities. Of these 41 strains, 18 were screened in soil microcosms after their inoculation into the organic fertilizer, most of which were affiliated with Azospirillum and Herbaspirillum. These 18 strains were nutritionally starved to improve their survival in soil, and 14 starved and/or non-starved strains significantly decreased N2O emissions in soil microcosms. However, the N2O emission had not been decreased in soil microcosms after inoculating with a nosZ gene-disruptive strain, suggesting that N2O reductase activity might be essential for N2O consumption. Although the decrease of N2O was not significant at field scales, the application of organic fertilizer inoculated with Azospirillum sp. TSH100 and Herbaspirillum sp. UKPF54 had decreased the N2O emissions by 36.7% in Fluvisol and 23.4% in Andosol in 2014, but by 21.6% in Andosol in 2015 (H. sp. UKPF54 only). These results suggest that the application of N2O-reducing denitrifier-inoculated organic fertilizer may enhance N2O consumption or decrease N2O emissions in agricultural soils.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate the spatial variability pattern of some soil quality parameters at landscape‐scale, particularly soil microbial biomass‐C (Cmic) and ‐N (Nmic), and soil microbial activity (respiration) as well as soil organic carbon (Corg), and hot water extractable carbon (Chwe) by multivariate analyses of variance and canonical discriminant analyses (CDA). The study area was the Trier region, Rhineland‐Palatinate, which is characterized by a wide range of soil types developed from various parent materials. Additionally, the investigated fields differed in soil management intensity (conventional, integrated, organic farming) and crops grown. Within the whole study area CDA revealed a separation into three sub‐areas. Within the sub‐areas the soil quality parameters were significantly influenced by the soil management systems and the crops grown. Despite the spatial variability and the relationship to soil management, the contents of Cmic could be predicted by stepwise multiple linear regression models, both for arable and grassland soils. The explained variance for the regression models were 72 % for arable soils and 63 % for grassland soils, respectively. Regression models for predicting Nmic and microbial activity revealed an explained variance between 30 and 58 %.  相似文献
