The ingredients’ particle size and dietary viscosity may alter digestion, performance and faecal waste management of fish. This study aimed to assess the effect of grinding screen sizes of feed ingredients and dietary viscosity on digestibility, faecal waste and performance of striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, Sauvage, 1878). The experiment had a 2 × 3 factorial‐design: two feed mesh particle sizes, by grinding ingredient mixtures at two screen sizes (0.8 versus 1.0 mm); and three dietary viscosity levels, created by exchanging carboxymethylcellulose by guar gum (GG) (0, 3 and 6 g of GG/kg of diet). Six diets were assigned to 18 tanks, each connected to three faecal settling tanks. All aquaria were stocked with 20 fish (82 g per fish). After 52 experimental days, dietary viscosity negatively affected both feed digestibility and performance of striped catfish; as a result, the amount of organic matter in the culture system through faeces had increased significantly. The coarse diets significantly increased the digestibility of dry matter and carbohydrate but worsened feed conversion ratio. Increasing dietary viscosity tended to increase the viscosity and moisture content of the faeces, but significantly accelerated the faecal disintegration through the reduction of both faecal recovery and the amount of recovered faeces.  相似文献

To evaluate the effects of dietary cork, protease and guar gum on growth, intestinal health and faecal floatability of tilapia, fine or coarse particle cork (0.45–0.60 mm, 0.60–0.83 mm) was included in diets at 0 (control), 20 g/kg, 30 g/kg and 40 g/kg, and then, 0.175 g/kg protease (P) and 3 g/kg guar gum (G) were supplemented to the 40 g/kg coarse particle diet individually or in combination (P + G). Tilapia with an initial body weight of 15.0 ± 0.5 g were fed one of the 10 diets for 60 days. The results showed that weight gain (WG), apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP), intestinal evacuation ratio, intestinal digestive enzyme activity (IDE) and villus height decreased, and floating faeces ratio increased with the increasing cork level in diets. At the same supplementation level, coarse particle groups showed significantly higher floating faecal ratio than fine particle groups (p < .05). Dietary protease increased the WG, ADC of DM, IDE and villus height (p < .05), and guar gum increased floating faecal ratio when compared to 40 g/kg coarse particle group (p < .05). However, the ADC of DM, IDE and villus height of protease group were still inferior to those of control group (p < .05). In conclusion, dietary cork increased the floating faeces ratio, and the coarse particles produced more floating faeces than fine particles. Moreover, the supplementation of guar gum in cork‐supplemented diet further increased the floating faeces ratio. However, dietary cork negatively affected the growth performance of tilapia, which could be partially alleviated by the supplementation of protease.  相似文献

The physico‐chemical properties of nutrients influence the physical characteristics of faeces and thus may affect waste removal efficiency. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of type of non‐starch polysaccharide (NSP) on digesta viscosity, faeces recovery and nutrient digestibility in Nile tilapia. Insoluble (cellulose) and soluble (guar gum) NSPs were included separately and combined at a level of 8%, thereby formulating four experimental diets. The diets were assigned to 16 tanks with 35 fish each, with four replicates for each diet. Cellulose inclusion did not influence digesta viscosity, growth and digestibility of protein and starch and tended to increase faeces recovery (P=0.06). Guar gum inclusion increased digesta viscosity and reduced the growth and digestibility of protein, fat and starch (P<0.01). Faeces recovery was reduced by 42% in diets containing guar gum. There were interaction effects (P<0.05) between cellulose and guar gum for the growth and feed conversion ratio, indicating that cellulose alleviated the negative impact of guar gum. In conclusion, dietary soluble NSPs increase organic matter load in the culture system through a reduction in faeces recovery and nutrient digestibility, whereas insoluble NSPs improve the removal efficiency of particles by increasing faeces recovery.  相似文献

The need for unbiased digestibility estimation has led to the development of a number of faeces collection methods. However, there is still a large variation in apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of diet/ingredients between these methods. This study investigated the impact of dietary quality on ADC and faeces recovery measurements obtained by two faecal collection methods (Choubert and settling tank). The fish were fed five diets: a control diet as high‐quality diet, two levels of dried duckweed (20% and 40%) and two levels of fresh duckweed (20% and 40%), which were added to the control diet, as low‐quality diets. Apparent digestibility coefficient estimates were highly correlated (r>0.95) between both faecal collection methods. For all diets the ADC estimates were higher when using settling tanks compared with Choubert collectors. For the control diet differences in ADC between two collectors were small, but by inclusion of duckweed these differences increased. The recovery percentage of faeces was not correlated between both faecal collection methods (r=0.22, P=0.41). The estimated recovery percentage of faeces by settling tanks was about three times higher than by Choubert. In conclusion, the differences in ADC and faeces recovery measured by two faecal collection methods depend on diet quality.  相似文献

The study analysed the dose–response relationship between dietary viscosity and nutrient digestibility, faecal waste characteristics in striped catfish and the long‐term impacts of viscosity on performance of striped catfish. This was done in two experiments: Exp.1 lasted 29 days, in which six dietary viscosity levels were created by including different amount of guar gum (GG; 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0 g/kg) and Exp.2 lasted 60 days and assessed the long‐term effects of three dietary GG levels (0, 0.5 and 3.0 g/kg) were checked. In Exp.1, digestibility of nutrients (except crude fat) decreased linearly with dietary viscosity. With increasing viscosity, removal efficiency of faeces from the water reduced linearly, whereas the total amount of faeces produced and the fraction of big‐sized faecal particles (>2 mm). increased linearly. In Exp.1, viscosity did not affect performance. However, in Exp.2, the GG inclusion level of 3.0 g/kg (1.72 cP for the viscosity) affected fish performance. In conclusion, the best strategy for faecal waste management in striped catfish by dietary viscosity is to keep it as low as possible in the diet.  相似文献

Alginate and guar gum were fed in different concentrations in dry, moist and wet diets to rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri, Richardson). Both binders reduced the apparent digestibility of protein and fat. They also reduced the feed intake and increased the moisture content of the faeces. Guar gum caused a delayed rate of passage through the gastro-intestinal tract. High levels of guar gum reduced the growth and the dry matter and fat contents of the fish. The protein content, CaP-ratio of the bones, condition factor, viscera and liver weights, and mortality were not influenced by the binders.  相似文献

Knowledge of the quantitative and qualitative properties of salmonid faeces is necessary for aquaculture waste dispersal models, and the design of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems. The amount and proximate composition of salmonid faeces can be estimated using a mass-balance, nutritional approach. Indigestible components of salmonid diets have the potential to affect faecal 'cohesiveness' or 'stability'. Nutrient content and density of faeces can vary depending on diet and submersion time. Faecal density has a greater influence on settling velocity than faecal size. Published settling velocity data on salmonid faeces are highly variable due to differences in fish size, rearing systems, collection time, water density, methodology, the mass fraction tested and diet. Most faecal settling data used in published salmonid waste dispersal models are rudimentary and recent information suggests that such models are highly sensitive to this input. The design of open-water IMTA systems and estimation of nutrient capture and recovery from co-cultured filter feeders is difficult due to limited information on particle size, digestibility, settleable and non-settleable mass fractions of salmonid faeces at cage environments. Implications of faecal properties on the accountability for the effects of aquaculture nutrient loading are discussed.  相似文献

Atlantic halibut larvae (120 mg) were weaned to formulated diets with different supplementations of ascorbate- poly-phosphate, ApP (300, 2000 and 3000 mg ascorbic acid (AA) equivalents kg−1 diet). The experiment lasted for 50 days with cofeeding of enriched Artemia and formulated diets during the first 30 days. During the last 20 days, only formulated diets were offered to the fish. One control group was fed only Artemia (770 mg AA kg−1 dry weight) during the entire experimental period. The specific growth rate during the 50 days was ≈ 4.5% day−1 and the mean weights in all dietary groups were ≈ 1 g when the experiment was terminated. No differences in mean weight and mortality were observed between the groups fed formulated diets and that fed Artemia during the experiment. The fish size in the groups fed formulated diets ranged between 0.10 and 3.05 g and this differed from the Artemia group where the size ranged between 0.35 and 1.35 g. Dietary levels of ApP had no positive effect on growth and survival. The retention of AA was significantly higher in the groups fed high dietary levels of ApP. Apparently, the bioavailability of high dietary levels of ApP appeared to be low for young halibut. After stressing the fish using a high-salinity challenge test, no significant difference in survival occurred among the dietary groups. Cortisol levels in plasma recorded 3 h post stress was significant lower in the Artemia group compared with the groups fed the formulated diets.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the role of soluble non-starch polysaccharide (guar gum) on white sea bream Diplodus sargus, glucose and lipid metabolism. A control diet was formulated to contain 40 % crude protein, 14 % crude lipids and 35 % pregelatinized maize starch, and three other diets were formulated similar to the control diet except for guar gum, which was included at 4 % (diet GG4), 8 % (diet GG8) or 12 % (diet GG12). Diets were fed to the fish for 9 weeks on a pair-feeding scheme. Guar gum had no effect on growth performance, feed efficiency, glycaemia, cholesterolaemia and plasma triacylglyceride levels. Hepatic glucokinase and pyruvate kinase activities, liver glycogen content and liver insulin-like growth factor-I gene expression were not affected by dietary guar gum, while fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase activity was lower in fish fed guar gum–supplemented diets. Hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity was higher in fish fed diets GG4 and GG8 than in the control group. Overall, data suggest that in contrast to mammals guar gum had no effect on white sea bream glucose utilization and in lowering plasma cholesterol and triacylglyceride levels. However, it seems to contribute to lower endogenous glucose production.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to investigate if dietary soluble non‐starch polysaccharides (NSP) increase digesta viscosity, reduce nutrient digestibility and increase organ weights in African catfish. The fish (mean weight 80 g) were fed diets supplemented with the soluble NSP guar gum at three levels, 0 g kg?1 (GG0), 40 g kg?1 (GG4) and 80 g kg?1 (GG8). Guar gum inclusion significantly increased digesta viscosity in the proximal (GG0: 1.7 centipoise or cP; GG4: 84.9 cP; GG8: 98.3 cP) and distal (GG0: 1.9 cP; GG4: 109.8 cP; GG8: 66.4 cP) intestine. Apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) were significantly lower for the GG8 diet than the GG0 diet (dry matter: 52% versus 69%; protein: 77% versus 90%; ash: 41% versus 54%; energy: 60% versus 77%). The ADC of dry matter and energy were significantly lower for the GG4 diet than the GG0 diet. The relative growth rate of metabolic weight (14.5–15.4 g kg?0.8 day?1) and feed conversion ratio (0.8) did not differ between diets. Fish fed the GG8 diet had a significantly higher somatic stomach index than GG0 fish (0.71% versus 0.65% body weight). The intestinal somatic index tended to increase with increasing guar gum supplementation (GG0: 1.08%; GG4: 1.23%; GG8: 1.59%). In conclusion, high digesta viscosities in the guar gum fed fish may explain the observed reduced nutrient digestibilities and increases in digestive organ weights.  相似文献

This study shows that alternatives for fishmeal in a fish diet affect not only fish growth but also faeces stability and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) waste production. Wheat gluten diet (WGD), soybean meal extract diet (SBE), soybean meal diet (SBM), duckweed diet (DWD) and single‐cell protein diet (SCP) were evaluated as a fishmeal replacement on a 15% weight weight?1 basis in tilapia diets. Fishmeal replacement affected dry matter (dm), protein, ash and P digestibility significantly. Faeces recovery (6.8–11.2%) was not significantly affected, although the amount of non‐recovered faeces and total faeces showed significant differences. Duckweed diet and SCP resulted in the largest amounts of non‐recovered and total faeces (199–210, 224–225 g dm kg?1 feed dm). Compared with fishmeal diet (FMD), the WGD and SBE resulted in similar growth, but higher non‐faecal N losses (471–495 vs. 416 g N kg?1 N). Soybean meal diet, DWD and SCP resulted in lower growth but less non‐faecal loss (409–450 g N kg?1 N). The DWD and FMD had the highest N retention (480 g N kg?1 N) compared with the other diets (431–451 g N kg?1 N). Carbon retention, faecal and non‐faecal losses and P retention were similar for all diets (302–358, 142–176 and 489–523g C kg?1 C, 606–704 g P kg?1 P). Phosphorus faecal loss was lower for all diets (329–381 g P kg?1 P) than for the FMD (401 g P kg?1 P).  相似文献

Abstract. Various possibilities of transmitting fish pathogenic VHS, SVC and IPN viruses by the heron, Ardea cinerea , were investigated. Shedding of IPN virus in the faeces could be demonstrated for a period of 7 days when about 1 g of IPN virus-infected trout fry was fed to the birds once only, whereas feeding larger quantities of infected fish on 5 consecutive days resulted in virus excretion for a further 5 days only. Infectious IPN virus could not be isolated from samples of blood and virus specific neutralizing antibodies could not be demonstrated in serum samples. A waterborne infection of trout fry was established by adding very small (0·2 g) quantities of faeces from herons fed IPN virus-contaminated fish to 20 1 water. Infectious SVC and VHS virus was also re-isolated from samples of food which were regurgitated by the herons at different times up to 120 min after feeding of contaminated fish. It was concluded that herons are able to act as mechanical vectors for IPN, VHS and SVC viruses and therefore, may be a potential source of infection and spread of the diseases.  相似文献

Despite the rapid expansion of spiny lobster aquaculture, very little is known about its potential environmental impacts. In an effort to understand the potential impacts of sea‐cage culture of spiny lobsters, the faecal output and settling velocity of faeces of spiny lobster were quantified. These data were then used in hydrodynamic modelling to assess the dispersal pattern of faecal material from two sizes of hypothetical spiny lobster farms, so that inferences about likely benthic impacts could be made by modelling different scenarios of farm stocking density and food conversion efficiency. The overall mean settling velocity of lobster faecal strands was 0.9 ± 0.05 cm s?1. There was a positive correlation between both the weight and density of faecal strands and their settling velocity. Conversely, neither the length nor the surface area of faecal strands was correlated with the settling velocity. Hydrodynamic modelling showed that faecal material deposition mainly occurred directly beneath the sea‐cages. The density of faecal material deposition increased proportionately with higher stocking density and FCR values. Overall, the results indicate that the deposition of faecal waste from sea‐cage lobster aquaculture is unlikely to cause widespread benthic impacts when operating to the current highest commercial stocking and feeding levels.  相似文献

Microparticles (< 40 μm diameter) composed of 600 mg g−1 tripalmitin/400 mg g−1 fish oil were used to encapsulate the low-molecular-weight (mol. wt 460) antibiotic oxytetracycline in the form of either oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC.HCl) or oxytetracycline hemicalcium salt (OTC.HEM). Dry, finely ground particles of core material were encapsulated in spray beads. Dissolved core material was encapsulated in lipid-walled microcapsules.
Oxytetracycline (OTC) was most efficiently delivered (≈ 46.5 mg g−1 lipid after 24 h suspension in seawater) as a hemicalcium salt in spray beads. Lipid-walled microcapsules were most efficient for delivering OTC (≈ 8.7 mg g−1 lipid) as OTC.HCl dissolved in 0.2  M HCl at a concentration of 300 mg mL−1.
Spray beads containing OTC.HEM were very stable over 1 month in storage. Lipid-walled microcapsules containing aqueous OTC.HCl lost ≈ 30% of their core material during storage. Freeze-drying of both microparticle types did not improve storage of spray beads, but showed promise for reducing leakage from lipid-walled microcapsules during storage and delivery to suspension feeders.  相似文献

To obtain faecal fluid from the calf by dialysis the following procedure was used: small dialysis bags filled with dextran 10% were placed in the cooled (4 degrees C) faecal sample to which gentamycin was added to inhibit fermentation. Equilibrium between dialysate and surrounding fluid was reached after 24 hours. However, depending on the consistency of the faeces, after 6 hours 90 to 95% of the final osmolality at 24 hours was reached. In regard to osmolality, sodium, potassium and chloride concentrations as well as to concentrations of short chain fatty acids no significant differences could be observed between the faecal fluid obtained by dialysis or by centrifugation (3500 g, 20 min, 4 degrees C) and subsequent filtration. Distinctly higher concentrations of calcium and inorganic phosphate were measured in the filtrates; a possible explanation is that these ions in faeces are largely present as poorly diffusible compounds (in particular with faeces of a more solid consistency) or are bound to the cell membranes.  相似文献

The physico-chemical characteristics of particulate wastes of Sparus aurata and Dicentrarchus labrax were investigated. Changes in the dimensions, settling velocity and total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) leached from commercial feed pellets were investigated after soaking. Also, the settling velocity and TAN leached from faecal pellets of these fish were assessed at 15 and 25 °C. The settling velocity of feed pellets was influenced positively by pellet weight and negatively by immersion length as a result of changes in pellet dimensions after soaking. The settling velocity of faecal pellets was determined by pellet weight. The experimental design did not allow identification of any consistent effect of water temperature on settling velocity. Total ammonia nitrogen leaching over time from feed and faecal pellets was successfully explained by means of a first-order kinetic equation. For feed pellets, water temperature significantly affected the speed of the process and the time at which the maximum TAN leached was reached, but did not influence the maximum TAN leached. Leaching was related to feed pellet size, and so the smaller the pellet, the higher the leaching. Total ammonia nitrogen leaching from faecal pellets was greater per unit weight than in feed pellets. However, neither water temperature nor fish species influenced TAN leaching from faeces.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted with rainbow trout to determine if Geotrichum candidum GC single cell protein could replace 100, 75 or 50% of fish meal in a pelleted diet. When the fish meal was completely replaced by GC the fish growth was retarded after 3 weeks of the experiment. With the larger fish (individual weight 47–54 g) in the short trial there were significant differences between fish fed the control diet (fish meal) and those fed the 75% substitution of GC diet. The most remarkable differences in fish growth appeared in a 42-day trial with small fish (5 g individual weight) when fish groups fed diets with 0.50 and 75% replacement gave significantly different results (P < 0.05), being 93,9, 46.6 and 34.2% gain, with feed coefficients of 1.49, 2.77 and 3.67, respectively. With large fish fed diets with 0,50 and 75% GC replacement, apparent digestibility of protein was 64.7, 68.2 and 37.5%, but fat digestibility was 79.5, 91.1 and 81.0%, respectively. No significant differences in amounts of free plasma amino acid (PAA) were found between rainbow trout fed diets with 0 or 50% substitution, but there was a marked decrease in PAA in the group fed the diet with 75% GC substitution. Analysis of chosen heavy metals was made on diets, fish and faeces, and Cu in particular was found not to be accumulated in the fish body.  相似文献

Abstract. By use of a selective medium, Renibacterium salmoninarum was recovered from rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson. With asymptomatic animals, small numbers of Renibacterium colonies were recovered only from the anterior part of the kidney; whereas in clinically diseased fish, dense pure culture growth was obtained from kidney, spleen, heart, blood, ascitic fluid and faeces. There was no evidence for the presence of R. salmoninarum in the water or sediment of 56 freshwater fish farms in England and Wales. Nevertheless, laboratory–based experiments showed that the pathogen was excreted in the faeces of clinically diseased fish. Moreover, there was survival of the bacterial cells for up to 21 days in sediment/faecal material.  相似文献

Two methods of faeces collection were compared when studying digestion in trout (78–200 g individual weight; 12–15°C): (a) Faeces stripped from the lower intestine; (b) faecal pellets filtered continuously from water using an automated faeces collector. This apparatus consisted of a cylindrical tank with a funnel shaped bottom, from which the effluent water was drained over a rotating cloth filter, separating the faecal pellets immediately from water. The digestion coefficients for energy and protein of a commercial feed and an experimental diet were determined applying both methods of faeces collection. Digestion coefficients for protein of the experimentally composed diet were 1–2·3% higher for the filtered faeces than for the stripped faeces (88·6–87·3%). The protein digestion coefficients for the commercial feed were about 5% higher when faeces were sampled by continued filtration. Results obtained with the stripping method averaged 79·5%. The energy digestion coefficients followed a similar trend. It was concluded that the stripping method gives more reliable digestion coefficients.  相似文献

The characteristics of dietary utilization, energy conversion efficiency, metabolic rate and energy partitioning were measured for cultured Pacific bluefin tuna (PBT) juveniles fed on an artificial diet. Thirty‐one juveniles (1.1 ± 0.3 g BW) were stocked into each of two 2500 L tanks to measure oxygen consumption (?O2), swimming speed, digestibility and growth performance. ?O2 elevated until 2.5 ± 0.3 times of pre‐feeding level within 1.5 h after feeding, except for the first feeding, and returned to pre‐feeding level within 3 h. Swimming speed fluctuation was corresponded with the ?O2 fluctuation, and both parameters were stable from 02:00 to 06:00 and also during the whole day for starved fish. These indicate that feeding has strong influence on their metabolic rate. Energy partitioning for faecal, urinary and branchial, heat increment and voluntary activity, standard metabolism, and retained energy were calculated to be 17.2%, 5.9%, 14.9%, 41.3% and 20.7% of total ingested energy, respectively. The results indicate that, unlike other fish, juvenile PBT distribute large amount of energy for maintenance, which allows only a little proportion of ingested energy available for growth.  相似文献
